Gonna Be Hunting for a Job Again... - KCSR

Things have been painfully slow in the land of industrial air compressors for about the past year. Unfortunately, it just got sprung on about the bottom dozen of us on the seniority list that we will be getting laid off until business improves. They say the potential is there for a call back later in the year, but no definite date, and no definite call. I'm gonna be hitting the job search again. Hard.

High school graduate of course. Some college. Background in motorcycle and automotive mechanics. Been at the Sedalia, MO Gardner-Denver plant since July 2014. Don't mind the factory life, but basically open to a lot of blue collar jobs. Going to be hitting up my lineman buddy and looking into that field, as well as others. If it helps me out any, I've been operating forklifts and electric stackers every day for the past year.

The manufacturing sector as whole seems to be really slow right now which I would imagine directly affects you guys. We have dropped about 50% compared to the previous two years which were banner years for sales volume. Everybody seems to believe that it will pick back up later this year, but I don't see it happening.

Thanks, man. Management has been talking about upcoming surges in business for the past year, and it's never happened, so I'm not counting on it when they say later this year either. They say they're going to want to call us all back, but no definite time frame, so not a bad excuse for me to try to get out of the Sedalia area. I've got an emergency fund saved up, so I'm not going to be hurting for a while, but no sense in waiting until they "'hopefully' bring us back later in the year."

Well "in the mean time" getting payed to take tylenol and do blood draws while you look for a better job isn't a bad notion. Don't give me that "side effects" crap either. This environment, food etc is fucked and no more harmful than taking an antibiotic for $$$.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the input. I'm gonna be alright money-wise, though, until I find something.

Well, being off work this past week sure felt weird. Going tomorrow to sign up for local 8 plumbers and gasfitters. Fingers crossed!

Me too. Hopefully they can give me an idea on timeframe.

When I applied a few years ago they said it could take 2 years. I was traveling a lot at the time and usually gone 3 weeks at a time, so I couldn't keep up with what was required.

Not sure what's posted right now, but Honeywell is and is going to be hiring lots of people over the next year or two. Think they have already hired over 100 people.

Everything from electrical and mechanical engineers to union assembly work. It's worth checking the website every week anyway. Union is on a two tier payscale, so starting pay has dropped a little.

You're talking about their plant that does some kind of manufacturing for the gov't, right? I know a guy who's dad works there. It's all hush hush as far as what they do IIRC, but I'll check it out

Honeywell has a lot of plants around not just that location..the tin hat is a little tight

Yeah I'm at the Botts rd plant, the NSC. We manufacture the non nuclear components for nuclear weapons. Honeywell has the contract through the DOE.

The two job classifications to look for (blue collar) are.

Production Fabricators
AASP, Assembler-Adjustor special precision

I'm slightly familiar with enersys- would be alright temporarily, but I wouldn't want to make a career there from what I've heard from people that've worked there.

Are you maybe talking about Janesville acoustics that's also hiring? I've looked into them some, and they look halfway promising. Need to go check them out.

yes janesville, they just did a job fair and are currently hiring. might be a good temp job till another comes along. good luck
