Default Mission: Impossible 7/8

Chris McQuarrie Returning for ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ & ‘8’, Will Film Back-to-Back

Chris McQuarrie, the writer/director of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and last year’s blockbuster hit Mission: Impossible – Fallout, has signed an unprecedented deal for the Mission franchise: he’s coming back to write and direct the next two movies in the long-running series, and he’s shooting them back-to-back. Will star Tom Cruise survive such a production?

The Mission: Impossible movies used to be a unique testing ground for different action filmmakers to come in and put their spin on the adventures of super spy Ethan Hunt, but McQuarrie broke tradition when he returned to the director’s chair for after Rogue Nation and delivered Fallout, one of the most purely entertaining blockbusters of the decade. Now Variety reports that he’ll shoot Mission Impossible 7 and 8 back-to-back with the seventh film aiming for a summer 2021 release and the eighth movie blasting into theaters the following summer.
Part of me laments the idea that we won’t get a fresh voice in this director’s chair any time soon, but it’s hard to argue with what McQuarrie has accomplished so far. In addition to being a hell of a great movie, Fallout made more than $790 million globally – the most of any movie in this long-running franchise – so it’s no surprise that Paramount decided to stick with a proven formula and bring McQuarrie back for more. And having listened to him talk about this franchise for probably ten hours of behind-the-scenes podcasts and interviews over the years, it’s obvious to me that he not only has a love for the characters in this franchise (including Rebecca Ferguson‘s Ilsa Faust, whom he created and is very protective of), but a real creative passion for the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants style of storytelling that he employs when making these things.
It’s also clear to me that he’s not interested in making the same movie twice, so I’m fascinated to see what his approach will be to these sequels. Is it being designed as one huge story told across two films, or will each one feel distinct and satisfying on its own? You can practically see the glint in his eye when McQuarrie talks about the stunt work in these films, too, so you can bet he and Cruise are going to go above and beyond to try to top themselves (if such a thing is even possible). Cue the “Ethan Hunt goes to space” jokes, but I honestly would not be surprised if we see that come to fruition in one of these movies.
Story-wise, now that Ethan’s relationship arc with Julia (Michelle Monaghan) has been completed, there’s room for a full-blown romance with Ilsa – something that’s been teased for two films but not yet consummated. Cruise is still shooting Top Gun: Maverick (which McQuarrie also worked on!), but the current plan is for him to start writing the scripts and for filming to begin sometime in 2019. Knowing what we know of how Fallout was made, the details and set-pieces of the story will be continually in flux, but here’s hoping he can capture lightning in a bottle yet again. Get pumped, people.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 & 8 Get Official Release Dates; Tom Cruise & Chris McQuarrie Set To Return

Just a few weeks after Tom Cruise announced that both he and director/writer Chris McQuarrie would return for the next two Mission: Impossible sequels, Paramount has officially booked release dates.

Deadline reported last night that Paramount Pictures has set release dates for the next two films in their blockbuster Mission: Impossible franchise. Mission: Impossible 7 will be out in theaters worldwide on July 23, 2021; and Mission: Impossible 8 will be out August 5, 2022.

Global megastar Tom Cruise will reprise his role as ace IMF Agent Ethan Hunt and will be reunited with his Rogue Nation and Fallout director Chris McQuarrie. This will be the eleventh and twelfth collaboration between the dynamic duo. Fallout was their ninth project together and Joe Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick, on which McQ made contributions to the screenplay, was their tenth.

In a statement following the sequel announcement, Paramount Pictures Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos said, “We couldn’t be more excited to build on the massive success of Mission: Impossible - Fallout by reteaming with Chris and Tom on these next two films, following two successful collaborations. We’ve also enjoyed a great partnership with Skydance and David Ellison on these three most recent films and look forward to continued success together on this great franchise.
The best intentions often come back to haunt you. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm.

Rebecca Ferguson Confirms That She Will Return As Ilsa Faust for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7

Highly in-demand actress Rebecca Ferguson has confirmed that she will return to the Mission: Impossible franchise to portray Ilsa Faust in the series' upcoming seventh installment. Hit the jump for more...

Paramount Pictures recently announced the release dates for the next two installments in the Mission: Impossible franchise, with Mission: Impossible 7 out in theaters on July 23, 2021 and Mission: Impossible 8 out on August 5, 2022. These two films, which will be filmed back-to-back, will see the return of franchise icon Tom Cruise, reprising his role as IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, and director Christopher McQuarrie, who helmed the last two Mission: Impossible entries.

The pairing of this dynamic duo certifies the next two entries in the franchise will be just as high quality as last year's critically acclaimed Mission: Impossible - Fallout, and now we have news of another returning star.

In an interview with ITV's Lorraine, Rebecca Ferguson confirmed that she will be reprising her role as Ilsa Faust for the franchise's seventh installment. Ferguson responded with an enthusiastic "you will"

Next ‘Mission: Impossible’ Film Adds ‘Peggy Carter’ Star Hayley Atwell

Hayley Atwell, the once and future Peggy Carter actress in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is going to be joining a different cinematic universe of spies: she’s the latest addition to the next Mission: Impossible film. That’s Mission: Impossible 7, for those keeping track at home, and while it’s rare for a franchise to feel like it’s at its peak after half a dozen films, last year’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout was such a high point that we’re completely amped to see what Tom Cruise and director Chris McQuarrie do with it next – and Atwell has us even more excited for it.

Hayley Atwell Mission Impossible Casting

Talk about perfect casting: we’re about to see Hayley Atwell in a Mission: Impossible film. The actress has already proven she can operate perfectly within the bounds of a spy thriller, but I was moved by her heartbreaking performance in the Black Mirror episode “Be Right Back,” in which she communicates with an artificial intelligence designed to mimic her boyfriend who died in a car crash. So while she’s clearly capable of kicking some ass and looking damn good while doing it (a staple of the Mission: Impossible franchise), she can also go toe to toe with the rest of the cast in terms of the more dramatic moments in these movies.

Atwell is having one hell of a summer. Along with dancing her way into everyone’s hearts in the final seconds of Avengers: Endgame (the biggest movie of all time), we found out that she’ll be lending her voice to the animated version of the character on the Disney+ series What If?, in a story imagining what would happen if Peggy was the one who becomes a government super soldier instead of Steve Rogers. Atwell also had a supporting role in this summer’s Blinded by the Light and just appeared in the trailer for the upcoming Netflix series Criminal.

Hayley Atwell Confirms She'll Be In Both MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 & MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 8 As The Female Lead

After it was announced last week that Hayley Atwell had joined the Mission: Impossible franchise, the actress has offered some details, confirming she'll be in both Mission 7 and 8 as the female lead...

After Chris McQuarrie announced last week that the fan-favorite actress Hayley Atwell (Avengers: Endgame; Captain America: The First Avenger) had joined the Mission: Impossible franchise, Atwell has now confirmed that she's signed on for a leading role opposite Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick) in both Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8.

The back half of her Instagram message from last night reads, "...I’m thrilled to have joined @tomcruise and @christophermcquarrie for the next TWO Mission Impossible movies. To have gone from a classical play in the west-end to an audio book recording of a great new novel to a Disney/Marvel animation and now the female lead in a huge action franchise is the kind of variety that fuels my curiosity and keeps me learning and striving to be better and do better. I can’t wait to start sharing this adventure with you. Mostly in the form of effusive, sweaty ranting about stunt training while spontaneously vomiting with excitement/exhaustion. Lucky you."

While Atwell confirms that she's signed on to play "the female lead in a huge action franchise," it's likely she'll be one of two female leads in the film as Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) is also widely expected to reprise her role as Ilsa Faust for the highly-anticipated action sequels.

As for the rest of the cast, no one has been confirmed just yet, but expect to see some combination of Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Monaghan, Maggie Q, Paula Patton and/or Sean Harris appear in the upcoming two-parter, which will film back-to-back starting early next year.

Mission: Impossible 7 is due out in theaters on July 23, 2021 while Mission: Impossible 8 is expected to light the fuse in theaters on August 5, 2022.
