Default Lack of Tiny Parts Disrupts Auto Factories Worldwide

Carmakers canít buy the semiconductors they need because home electronics are taking all the supply.

That really doesn't surprise me. Everything else home or individual use items are in short supply from hot tubs to UTV's. Couple that with factory shutdowns, customs being way behind (especially in LA), and you have a supply chain problem that spans across many things, not just cars.

Corvette plant is shut down this week in Kentucky... It's a shame, I have a 2021 order that literally finished being built last week and is stuck in the shipping lane at the factory... estimated delivery date now shows "delayed"... Poor customer has been waiting so long!

Since you guys care, I'll actually tell the whole Corvette ordering story as it works at my store. lol

In November 2019 we received our allocations for 2020 Corvette orders. This is all based on previous sales.

We were told we would be able to order a total of 9 2020 Corvettes. Sold or not sold that's how many we would get.

I had 9 orders in line, but GM doesn't care about those until they give you your allocation for the quarter, which was 3 per quarter for the first 3 quarters of 2020.

Then covid hit, plants shut down, etc etc.. GM bailed on us and said they would only be able to build 3 of the cars that I had in the GM system as sold orders in November of 2019. All 3 of these cars were finally delivered by September of 2020.

I moved the rest of my 2020 orders to the 2021 order list. So my #4 order for a 2020 became a 2021 order, that was allocated in November of 2020. They built the car in January, and it should be here any day now. So this guy has been waiting since November of 2019 for his car.

Thankfully, they have given us quite a few more allocations for 2021 cars, but now they are only telling us how many we are getting in the upcoming quarter, no further out.

So now that it is February, they have accepted and sent my first 3 2021 orders to production control and told us they WILL build them. This morning we "earned" our 4th 2021 allocation, and told us they will be able to build that car as well. So at this rate I SHOULD be able to get all of my customers their cars in 2021, and then I have another 7 people on the list for 2022 models.

The moral of the story here is that people are willing to wait a LONG time for these cars. The main reason I haven't lost a single one of my customers is because we aren't selling them over MSRP and literally NOBODY can skip ahead in line. If a customer dies or goes broke while waiting for their car (legit concern with Corvette customers), then I call everyone with an existing order, in-line and ask if they want the car as it is built for MSRP or if i should move on down the list. I also only do local customers. Some guy from New Jersey calls and asks about vettes I tell him to call Kerbek or Hendrick and try his luck.

The weird thing with GM, that is totally different from my Ford and Dodge new vehicle orders, is that GM doesn't care if it is a SOLD order... Example, if big dog dealer that sells a ton of vettes has 100 allocations for the quarter, they get all of them weather they are sold or not... Even if I have 10 sold orders, I only get how many cars I am allocated, so my sold people have to wait while the big dogs are ordering cars that are just for their lot and marking them up $10k over MSRP... Dodge and Ford give priority to sold orders, so they'll always build sold orders first and won't let another dealer order a stock unit when you have a sold order waiting.

TL;DR : This guy has been patiently waiting since November of 2019 for his car.

That might be one of the reasons for the slowdown of new model productions.

I've been wating for my new work car for over 3 months. Keeps getting pushed back. New estimated delivery is 6.15.

I'm really wanting to unload my '15 Sequoia in this used car market and use my work car for my primary (only charged .22/mile, incl gas/service/ins/etc). I'd be able to get out of my $400/mo car payment.

Believe me, I'm trying.

I specifically chose the van so I wouldn't lose the utility. .22/mile all-in is a great deal. I chekced the status today for the first time in a few weeks, now the drop date is not even on there, just "pending."

Sucks.

I work for a company that makes and machines aluminum castings, including automotive, we have parts stacked high waiting for shipping and of course our customers are stacked up as well all waiting on Ford to open back up. We keep making the parts because as soon as the flood gated open , boom. We also make for other industry and are still busy. 6-7 day work weeks all through the last year

The Molex connectors on the new corvette are made in Lincoln NE. I think that plant was also hit with Covid difficulties.

The semiconductor issues are ongoing as many plants in the Malaysia area are now experiencing an uptick in COVID cases and likely to see and even further delay in chips. (ie additional shut downs are being talked about)

Current state of affairs is pretty terrible, fellas.... Some import manufacturers were holding enough chips to keep rolling through the spring and summer... but even they are singing the blues now.

We thought that "rock bottom" was back in July... but GM is telling us that September and October are the new rock bottom, and not to expect things to be back to normal any time soon.

That said, Corvettes are getting built, so at least those are going well. I've got my first (2) 2022 models in the system and accepted by production control already, which is killer news for vette people!
