Default Cambridge Data scandal backlash?

‘What's Facebook?’ Elon Musk quips as he deletes Tesla, SpaceX pages

Congress asks Zuckerberg to explain Cambridge data scandal

Tesla's and SpaceX's verified Facebook pages disappeared on Friday, minutes after billionaire founder Elon Musk promised on Twitter to take down the page when challenged by a user.
"Delete SpaceX page on Facebook if you're the man?" a user tweeted to Musk. His response: "I didn't realize there was one. Will do."
Each Facebook page had more than 2.6 million followers.
Musk had begun the exchange by responding to a tweet from WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton of the #deletefacebook tag.
"What's Facebook?" tweeted Musk, who is more of a Twitter and Instagram guy. He also deleted his personal Facebook page.

Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers on Friday formally asked Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg to explain at a Washington hearing how 50 million users' data got into the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

The world's largest social media network is under growing pressure from governments, investors and advertisers. This follows allegations by a whistleblower that Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed users' information to build profiles on American voters that were later used to help elect U.S. President Donald Trump in 2016.

"The hearing will examine the harvesting and sale of personal information from more than 50 million Facebook users, potentially without their notice or consent and in violation of Facebook policy," chairman Representative Greg Walden, a Republican who chairs the panel, and Frank Pallone, the top Democrat, and other committee leaders wrote in the letter.

A Facebook spokesman confirmed the company had received the letter and was reviewing it, but did not say whether Zuckerberg would agree to testify. The Facebook chief executive apologized on Wednesday for mistakes his company made and promised to restrict developers' access to user information as part of a plan to protect privacy.

Playboy Deletes Facebook Pages, Citing User-Data Scandal and ‘Sexually Repressive’ Policies

Playboy is leaving Facebook — for good, it says — with the social giant’s latest user-privacy scandal the straw that broke the camel’s back for the media company.
Playboy Enterprises said it will deactivate its accounts on Facebook, which cumulatively have more than 25 million followers. “The recent news about Facebook’s alleged mismanagement of users’ data has solidified our decision to suspend our activity on the platform at this time,” Playboy Enterprises said in a statement.

In a tweet Tuesday evening, Playboy chief creative officer Cooper Hefner — son of the late Hugh Hefner, the mag’s famed founder — said, “We are stepping away from Facebook.”

“Facebook’s content guidelines and corporate policies continue contradicting our values,” the exec wrote. “We’ve tried to craft our voice for the platform, which in our opinion continues to be sexually repressive.”

Hefner added, “Learning of the recent meddling in a free U.S. election further demonstrates another concern we have of how they handle users’ data.”

For Facebook, Playboy’s move is part of a worrisome backlash against the company, exemplified by the #DeleteFacebook hashtag, that has grown in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica revelations. The U.K.-based political consulting firm obtained info on 50 million users, without Facebook’s knowledge and without the consent of the users themselves.

Last week tech billionaire Elon Musk took action last week to delete the Facebook pages of two companies he heads, Telsa Motors and SpaceX. “I don’t use FB & never have, so don’t think I’m some kind of martyr or my companies are taking a huge blow. Also, we don’t advertise or pay for endorsements, so…don’t care,” Musk wrote in a tweet last Friday.

And on March 20, Brian Acton, a co-founder of messaging app WhatsApp — which Facebook acquired in a deal valued at $19 billion — called for a boycott in a tweet: “It is time. #deletefacebook.” Acton is now executive chairman of Signal Foundation, a non-profit org developing open-source privacy technology.

About 8% of Facebook users said they plan to stop using the service because of data-privacy concerns raised by the Cambridge Analytica scandal, according to a survey fielded by Raymond James & Associates. About 48% said they would not change their usage, while 26% said they would use Facebook “somewhat less” and 19% said they will use it “significantly less,” the survey found.

Facebook has pledged to make several changes in an attempt to rebuild trust with users and partners. Those include making its privacy controls easier to use and implementing new restrictions on third-party developers’ access to user data. CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly has decided to testify before Congress in hearing scheduled for next month.

Playboy in 2014 removed nude photos from its websites and said the print mag would no longer include nudity starting in early 2016. However, last year, Cooper Hefner reversed that decision.

The Tattered Remains of Cambridge Analytica Just Filed for Bankruptcy in the U.S.

Photo: Getty
Cambridge Analytica, the shady data firm accused of misusing the data of millions of Facebook users, filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. late Thursday. The news is hardly shocking—the firm announced that it had filed for insolvency in the UK earlier this month with bankruptcy proceedings in the U.S. to soon follow.

The voluntary petition declaring Chapter 7 bankruptcy, submitted by Cambridge Analytica’s New York office, listed assets in the range of $100,001 to $500,000 and liabilities from $1 million to $10 million. It was signed on behalf of board members Rebekah and Jennifer Mercer, the conservative heiresses and daughters of billionaire Robert Mercer who funneled millions into Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

The bankruptcy filing reveals that Cambridge Analytica’s U.S.-based parent company, SCL USA, also filed for bankruptcy Thursday in New York. It also shows that Cambridge Analytica affiliates SCL Group Ltd., SCL Analytics Ltd., SCL Commercial Ltd., SCL Social Ltd., SCL Elections Ltd., and Cambridge Analytica (UK) Ltd., all filed for bankruptcy in the UK earlier this month.
Chairman of SCL Group Julian Wheatland announced to employees earlier this month that Cambridge Analytica’s parent company SCL Group was shutting down, shuttering the business of both Cambridge Analytica and SCL Elections immediately. During the conference call in which the news was dropped, Wheatland had said that the board determined that in the current environment, the company’s rebranding efforts were “futile.” He also noted that the ongoing investigations into Cambridge Analytica, a smeared reputation, and a loss of clients contributed to the board’s decision to shutter its operations.
Cambridge Analytica’s bankruptcy filing in the U.S. coincides with an ongoing investigation into the company by the Justice Department and the FBI. According to the New York Times, investigators are looking to speak with former employees as well as banks that dealt with the firm’s business. This federal investigation is reportedly focusing on the firm’s financial practices as well as how it obtained the data from Facebook and other outside parties. Facebook has reportedly been contacted by officials involved with the investigation.
“I knew that we weren’t long for this world,” a former employee told Gizmodo this month, referring to the sudden downfall of the data firm, “but I didn’t think it would happen as fast as it did.”

if only the Mercers and Steve Bannon would be forced to actually pay for the crimes their company committed to benefit Donald Trump... but alas, the Donald Trump Effect - aka bankruptcy protection - will be in full effect and I'd wager that Trump's DOJ will likely not have much to say on the matter.

Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that ”all men are created equal.” We now practically read it “all men are created equal, except negroes” When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read “all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics.” When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocricy. - Lincoln

Or ya know, Republicans could actually give a shit about our country and the Constitution instead of doing everything in their power to avoid the total collaspe of their party with Trump. Trump has shined such an amazing light of truth onto the ugliness of the Republicans and let them expose themselves for what they truly are, I almost feel like we owe him a thank you.
