Picked up this simple leather band Fossil. My first actual watch. Thought it was time for one

Any thoughts on alternatives to Lum-Tecs? I love M57 and fiancee wants to buy one for me for xmas, but she shouldn't be spending more than 200 (both in school). Any ideas?

TW Steel makes some larger watches. They are a similar style to UBoat. You can find them online a lot cheaper than in stores. You may check them out. Those, Citizen, or a G-shock would probably be my first choice under $300.

Meirottos now carries Lum-Tec just fyi. TW Steel makes some great watches and so does Citizen. Great watch for the price. Don't be afraid to check out the pre-loved at places like Meirottos either.

I would definitely go back for my next one. They have a great selection of used watches, just tell them what you want and they probably have it or something similar. I got lucky when I found mine.

Unique, but I would never spend the money on it. Too many better looking watches out there.

Soon enough I will have M54. Then I told the wife for my 30th bday I am buying a Rolex, Panerai or an Omega. It is a toss up for me.

Its not that hard of a choice It really depends on what you want and what you can and will wear. After getting my first "nice" watch, I learned an expensive lesson on what looks great, may not be comfortable everyday. For that reason, I stayed away from Panerai for my next one.

Here is another one I really like by Phillip Stark. But it seems they are having problems with performance.

Well I would have learned that issue but some asshole (Wes) decided to sell his before I could see them.

Haha. I went to Meirottos and Tivol to look. Tivol would not haggle on the price at all, but I gave them my email and 2 out of the three that we were serious about were magically on sale the following week or so. I ended up buying a watch for my wife from Geoff and I found the exact one I was looking for at Meirottos. It was used, but they serviced it, it had all of the boxes and papers, and it came with a one or two year warranty. Not a great deal, but I couldn't pass it up.

Geoff is the way to go if you want new. Just find the watch you want, then email him to see if he can get it. I know some people at both Tivol and Meirottos so let me know and I will see if I can't help you out next time. Geoff would be my first source though.

Will do. I can't remember the gals names at Tivol that helped me (Briarcliff). A taller blonde gal helped me at Meirottos. Really nice. Even sent me a thank you card about a week later.

Edit - As for Geoff, I told him what my wife was looking for and he took one in on trade a few days later. When the wife is happy...I got a new watch right after that.
