Kylr Yust charged with murder in Kara Kopetsky, Jessica Runions cases

Kylr Yust, long suspected in the 2007 disappearance of Kara Kopetsky, was charged Thursday in Cass County with killing her and Jessica Runions.
Yust is charged with two counts of murder in the first degree and two counts of abandonment of a corpse.
“We’re just glad and we hope they can get it taken care of,” said Mike Runions, Jessica’s grandfather. “Right now there’s nothing we can do but wait to see what happens.”
The charges come nearly six months after a mushroom hunter found human bones in a wooded area south of Belton on April 3. Authorities then scoured the area near a quarry and found more remains, including a second skull.
Police notified Kopetsky’s family, as well as the family of Runions, to tell them about the discovery. Soon after, Runions’ family learned that one set of remains belonged to their daughter. It took another four months for the second set of remains to be identified. Kopetsky’s family was notified in mid August that they were hers.
Kopetsky was last seen May 4, 2007, leaving Belton High School.
Runions was last seen Sept. 8, 2016, leaving a gathering with Yust. Authorities soon found Runions’ burned vehicle in a wooded area in south Kansas City and charged Yust with burning it.
Yust was an estranged boyfriend of Kopetsky’s at the time of her disappearance.
His trial on that charge has been scheduled for this month.

Mother of Kara Kopetsky talks about identification of her daughter's remains

The second set of Cass County remains found in April by a mushroom hunter was positively identified as Kara Kopetsky. Kopetsky went missing in 2007, and her mother and stepfather, Rhonda and Jim Beckford, have been keeping her story in the public eye. This video was originally published Aug. 16, 2017.

think that became more of a running joke and not to be taken 100% serious (kind of like her being in KANE's basement)

Yust admitted to strangling, hiding bodies of Kara Kopetsky & Jessica Runions per investigators

CASS COUNTY, Mo. -- The man long-believed to be a killer is now suspected of murder. On Thursday Cass County prosecutors formally charged Kylr Yust with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of abandoning a corpse related to the disappearances and killings of Kara Kopetsky in 2007 and Jessica Runions in 2016.
Runions disappeared after she left a party with him in September 2016. Kopetsky vanished more than 10 years ago after she was last seen walking out of Belton High School.
A decade separated the disappearances, but their remains were found near each other, just a few days apart in April 2017 when a mushroom hunter stumbled upon bones in rural Cass County. Yust has been in jail and charged with burning Runions' car in Jackson County, where he is still in custody.

Court papers show that the prosecutor's case started back on April 28th of 2007 -- days before Kopetsky disappeared. She told police that Yust kidnapped her after they broke up.
A judge granted her request for a restraining order on April 30th, four days before it's believed that she was killed. Kopetsky was just 17 years old when she disappeared, and was last seen leaving Belton High School in May of 2007.
Court records show that over the years investigators tried to crack Yust multiple times.
Between April of 2010 and June of 2012, multiple people who knew him called police saying Yust admitted to choking Kopetsky to death.

(Editor's note: see bottom of page for a summary of Yust's admissions to the killings)
Yust was sentenced to federal prison for drug distribution in November of 2013, and put on supervised release on September 2, 2016. That court order reads:
"You shall serve one weekend confined at a facility designated by the Bureau of Prisons. You shall report to the designated facility, as instructed by the probation officer, on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and will be released the following Sunday at 7:00 p.m. You are to pay subsistence as directed."
On September 9, 2016, Runions was reported missing a day after leaving a party with Yust where he was behaving possessive of Runions and acting aggressively towards others according to witnesses. They said Yust was drinking heavily at the party and arguing with Runions.
Police found her burned-out car on September 10. A man who was with Yust that same day told police that he drove Yust to his home in Edwards, Mo., and he was recovering from burns he received setting Runions' SUV on fire. The SUV was found in the area of 95th Street and Blue River Road. That man told police that Yust said he strangled Runions and "she was gone." Yust added that he had dragged her body into the woods.
After he left Yust, that man contacted police and told them everything Yust had said and where he was. Yust was arrested on September 11, investigators noted he had burns to his face, hands and arms, in addition to scratches on his face.
Months later on April 4th, a mushroom hunter contacted police to report that he found the remains of two people in heavy woods near Y Highway and 233rd Street. Investigators used DNA and dental records to identify the remains of Runions and Kopetsky.
Yust is awaiting trial on October 23 in Jackson County for a charge of knowingly burning or exploding related to the torching of Runions' SUV. As court proceedings take place for the murder charges, Yust will be held on a $1 million bond.

* 4/26/10: A bandmate who was also a roommate of Yust's in 2007 told Belton investigators that Yust said something bad had happened to Kara and he snapped. Yust said he was angry with Kopetsky because she wouldn't love him, and he didn't want her to love someone else.
* 1/22/11: Someone contacted Belton police and said that Yust told her he choked Kara to death, picked up her body and hid it in the woods.
*2/4/11: The same person reconnects with police and tells a more complete story. She said that Yust described choking Kara, watching her take her last breath. He said he stared at her body before moving it to the woods.
* 8/19/11: A previous girlfriend of Yust tells Kansas City investigators that he choked her and told her that he had killed his girlfriends before and would not hesitate to kill her too.
* 6/5/12: Someone told police that in early 2012 Yust told them that he had choked Kara out, looked at her body before taking her to the woods. Yust further described they were having relationship problems and had a physical struggle before he killed her.
* 9/2015: An investigator confronts Yust at a correctional facility in Oklahoma about lying regarding Kopetsky's disappearance. Yust refuses to talk. He had been serving a federal sentence for distributing a controlled substance, he was sentenced to 45 months in November of 2013, and put on supervised release on September 2, 2016.
* 3/28/16: Cell inmate of Yust in Oklahoma says that Yust asked him for an alibi after the police interview in September of 2015. The inmate said Yust admitted that he had killed Kopetsky by choking her and then disposed of her body.
* 9/10/2016: Man contacts Belton police and said he was with Yust admitted that he strangled and killed Runions. Yust also told that witness he had dragged her body into and undisclosed wooded area, but couldn't drag her very far.
*10/5/2016: Belton police interview a former roommate, who said about 3-and-a-half years earlier Yust told him that he killed Kopetsky and no one would ever find the body unless he told them where it was.

It just all seemed to make sense to me. He seemingly had gotten away with Kara's murder. I figured he was confident enough to feel the same. I mean after all, look how long it had been since she had gone missing. It only seemed logical that he would hide the second body in the same place since it was such a good hiding place in his own mind.

Attorneys want Kylr Yust declared mentally unfit to stand trial in deaths of Kara Kopetsky, Jessica Runions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. —
Attorneys for murder suspect Kylr Yust want him declared mentally unfit to stand trial.

Yust has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of abandonment of a corpse in connection with the deaths of Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions.

Remains found by a mushroom hunter in a rural Cass County, Missouri, field in 2017 were later identified as Kopetsky and Runions.

Yust’s attorneys said they have "a good faith believe that Kylr Yust suffers from a mental disease or defect and that as a result of his mental disease or defect he lacks the competence to proceed.”

In the filing submitted Friday, the attorneys state Yust needs to be treated by the Missouri Department of Mental Health in order to regain competence.

"This belief is based on the opinion of Dr. Jose Mathews, M.D, who was retained by defense counsel to perform an evaluation of Mr. Yust," attorneys said in the filing. "The defense has filed Dr. Mathew's report with the court and counsel for the state.”

On Tuesday, a judge set a hearing date for Sept. 3 to discuss Yust’s competency request and additional case matters. The judge has not yet ruled in the matter.

Yust was Kopetsky's ex-boyfriend when she vanished from Belton High School in 2007.

Court documents detail a history of abuse. Kopetsky filed an ex parte order against Yust after he kidnapped her from her job. Yust admitted to police at the time that he didn't like that she was seeing other people after their on-again-off-again relationship.

Documents show one witness reported in 2009, Yust told him about his relationship with Kopetsky. The documents state that Yust told the witness that Kopetsky wouldn't love him, and that he was angry with her because he didn't want her to love someone else. Yust then said he just "snapped" and that something bad had happened to Kopetsky.

In 2011, another witness told police that Yust had confessed to him that he had choked Kopetsky to death, packed up her body and placed it in some woods.
Yust reportedly told that second witness that he watched Kopetsky breathe her last breath.

Later in 2011, one of Yust's previous girlfriends contacted police saying he had gotten violent with her. Yust reportedly told her that he had killed his girlfriends in the past and would not hesitate to kill her.

A friend of that girlfriend then told police Yust had admitted to choking Kopetsky to death and that no one would ever find the body unless he told someone where it was.
In 2012, another witness said Yust told them he had picked Kopetsky up from school the day she went missing. Yust told that person that they had gotten into a physical altercation and he had "choked her out."

Yust then reportedly told that witness that he watched Kopetsky take her last breath before taking her remains and placing them into some woods.

In 2015, while Yust was in jail on federal drug charges in Oklahoma, an individual attempted to question Yust again regarding Kopetsky's disappearance. He declined to answer any additional questions. However, in 2016, Yust's former cellmate called police and stated that after his interview with the affiant, Yust asked his cellmate for help to get an alibi.

Yust reportedly admitted to his cellmate that he had strangled Kara and disposed of her body.
Jessica Runions was last seen leaving a party with Yust in September 2016.

Witnesses remembered seeing the two leave the party together in Runions' 2012 Chevy Equinox. They said that Yust had been drinking heavily at that party, was acting aggressively, and was acting possessive toward Runions.
Others reported Yust and Runions argued at the party before leaving.

Two days later, Runions' SUV was found burning along a road in Kansas City.

A witness told police that he had been with Yust just after Runions' disappearance. Yust reportedly admitted that he had strangled Runions and "she was gone." Yust also allegedly admitted to dragging Runions' body to an undisclosed wooded area - but said he couldn't drag her too far in.

The witness said Yust wanted help in burning Runions' SUV. That witness was with Yust when he intentionally set that vehicle on fire. As Yust started the flames, he inadvertently burned his hands and face.

After burning the vehicle, the witness drove Yust to a home in Edwards, Missouri, to allow Yust time to heal from his burn wounds. After leaving, the witness called police to tell them everything he knew.

Yust was taken into custody the very next day with noticeable burn wounds to his face, hands, and arms. He also had noticeable scratches on his face.

Yust has been held behind bars since last year charged with setting Runions' car on fire.

In a document filed Monday, Yust waived his right to appear at the Sept. 3 hearing.

Judge agrees to order mental evaluation for Kylr Yust

Yust charged in deaths of Jessica Runions, Kara Kopetsky

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — A Cass County judge agreed to order a mental evaluation for a man accused in two high-profile murder cases.
Kylr Yust is charged with murder in the deaths of Jessica Runions and Kara Kopetsky.

No cameras were allowed in the courtroom for Tuesday's hearing.
Yust's attorneys filed paperwork saying Yust suffers from a mental disease or defect and may lack competence to stand trial.
The judge said he would order the mental exam, but added that he wanted the trial to proceed as scheduled.

Kylr Yust’s attorneys continue to argue he's incompetent to stand trial

Yust accused of murdering Kara Kopetsky, Jessica Runions

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — Kylr Yust, who is accused of killing two women, stood before a judge Monday, shackled and silent, as his attorneys continued to argue he is mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Yust is accused of killing Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions. Kopetsky was 17 when she disappeared in 2007. Jessica Runions was 21 when she disappeared in 2016. A mushroom hunter found both women's remains in a Cass County farm field in 2017.

During Monday's hearing, Yust gave a few nods to his attorney as he walked out of the courtroom, seeming to understand her directions.

New court documents say Yust has “extreme anxiety” about showing up in court, and is “not receiving appropriate medical treatment for his mental health conditions despite been having prescribed psychiatric medications by a physician.”

A judge canceled a trial set for November, since there are several pending items in the case, including a mental evaluation for Yust, and items of missing discovery.

Attorneys for the prosecution and defense settled a bulk of the missing items, but still had questions about others.
Judge William Collins set a new case review date for Nov. 18.

Collins also ordered the first witness to report Kopetsky missing, Amy Clarke, to give a deposition in the case. Attorneys said Clarke has not obeyed a subpoena to give a deposition. Collins ordered Clarke to show up at the Cass County Justice Center Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. Clarke said she would be there.

Hiding evidence (aka burying) should be enough to preclude that sort of defense. You cant just become insane now that you are facing consequences. By hiding it you knew what you were doing was wrong.

If he is too anxious to appear in court, fine, let him be tried in absentia, he is opting out not having that right taken from him. Just make sure he attends his execution.

Also, Kylr? What kind of white trash name is that?
