2020 BMW 8-Series spy shots

BMW is working on a flagship coupe to revive the 8-Series name and today we have our first spy shots of a prototype.
BMW hinted at the model in March when senior executives said the automaker was looking at adding more high-end models. One of these will be the 8-Series. Another will be an i8 Spyder.
The 8-Series looks to feature a low roof and wide, muscular shoulders reminiscent of Aston Martin’s DB9. And just like Aston Martin’s popular grand tourer, the 8-Series will feature four seats arranged in a 2+2 format.
Some readers will recall BMW had started work on a large, coupe-like sedan based on the striking CS concept car of 2007. However, the global financial crisis that erupted that year put an end to the project.
BMW never gave up on the idea of a large coupe, however, and in 2013 we got a taste of a modern successor to the 8-Series with the unveiling of the Gran Lusso Coupe concept. Developed with Pininfarina, the Gran Lusso Coupe marked the start of a partnership between BMW and the Italian design house and is thought to hint at some of the finer design elements of the new 8-Series.

Enlarge Photo
The platform is BMW’s carbon fiber-infused CLAR design that debuted in the 2016 7-Series. It should ensure a low curb weight (for a large, luxurious coupe) as well as compatibility with electrified powertrains. We can also expect the latest in infotainment technology including next-generation gesture control.
Recent BMW trademark filings suggest V-8, V-12, M Performance and dedicated M options for the car. The filings included “850”, “860”, “M850” and “M8.” It's possible the M8 will feature a high-performance hybrid system known as the Power eDrive plug-in hybrid. The system combined a turbocharged inline-4 with a pair of electric motors for a combined 670 horsepower. The V-12 models should feature the same 600-hp twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter engine from the latest M760i xDrive.
Production of the 8-Series will take place at BMW’s main plant in Dingolfing, Germany, most likely starting in 2019. This means we should see the car introduced as a 2020 model. Rivals will be the Lexus LC, Maserati Gran Turismo and Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe.
To make way for the 8-Series in BMW’s lineup, the slow-selling 6-Series will be phased out. Don’t be too sad because we hear a new 6-Series will eventually arrive, although it will be a much sportier proposition to take on the Jaguar F-Type, Mercedes-AMG GT and of course the Porsche 911.
Eventually, BMW is likely to add an 8-Series Convertible and perhaps even a four-door 8-Series Gran Coupe to its lineup.

I was thinking the same thing. At the same time though, I would expect a tt v12 with 600hp to be buttery smooth. Maybe that was their goal as well? The displacement isn't horribly large.

Default The BMW 8 Series Is Back

During a BMW meeting today in Munich, the chairman of the BMW board Harald Krüger confirmed that the BMW 8 Series Coupe is slated for arrival in 2018. Today is a very good day.

Later this month, BMW will show us a design concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, which it says will give an “exclusive look” at the upcoming coupe. In the meantime, here’s a sketch that doesn’t really tell us much.
“The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our line-up—a slice of pure automotive fascination,” said Krüger. “The 8 Series Coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe.”

This news comes right after we learned that the 6 Series Coupe has been discontinued, leaving an executive coupe-shaped hole in the BMW lineup.

Rumors of the 8 Series’ return have been circling for years and it looks like it’s finally happening. BMW currently does not have a luxury flagship like Mercedes does and it’s about time the 8 Series changed that.
Only one car has borne the 8 Series mantle before—the big grand tourer built from 1989 to 1999 that famously came in V8 or V12 flavors. The original 8 was a technological powerhouse, but ultimately a failure in the marketplace, doomed by the rise of SUVs at the expense of coupes, its monstrous price tag and its complicated nature. In the years since it’s become coveted among enthusiasts willing to put up with its many quirks in exchange for its bold looks and power.

Can't wait to see it. I was a huge fan of the 840/850 growing up.

BMW has announced the launch of the new 8-Series in 2018 at its annual general meeting in Munich, bringing the fabled nameplate back, as part of its new strategy focusing on higher-margin sports cars.

"We are refreshing our entire product portfolio and strengthening the performance side. Our strategy will focus on the luxury segment, where there are margins to be earned," Krueger said.

The new BMW 8-Series will be based on the same modular CLAR architecture that underpins models like the 7- and 5-Series and plans to be positioned under the Rolls Royce Wraith in the Group’s range of models, in the “150k euros-plus” range (around $165,000), according to a report from AutoNews.

The two-door coupe will hit the market in 2018, with a convertible version to arrive a year later. BMW still hasn’t decided if there’s going to be a fully-fledged M8 version yet, but a range-topping V12 model is definitely coming.

And in 5-6 years there will be minimal improvements, and will go used for $40k.

BMW 8 Series concept leaked

Leaked images have ruined BMW's surprise.
The brand-new 8 Series concept isn't scheduled to break cover until tomorrow night, but leaked images have ruined BMW's surprise. The low-resolution pictures were posted by a German Car Forum user. They suggest the 8 Series takes BMW's design language into a sharper, more dynamic direction. While it's not as sharp-cornered as its land shark-esque predecessor, it boasts an angled rendition of the company's kidney grilles, wing-like headlights, and a bulging hood. The roof line peaks right above the driver and gently slopes into a tall rear end accented by a ducktail spoiler.
Pictures of the cabin weren't leaked. Similarly, technical specifications haven't been announced yet. We know the 8 Series will be positioned at the very top of the BMW lineup, so it will likely offer eight- and 12-cylinder engines borrowed from the BMW parts bin. Rear-wheel drive will come standard, and xDrive all-wheel drive will be offered at an extra cost.

Stay tuned, the BMW 8 Series concept will make its official debut tomorrow night during the Villa d'Este Concours d'Elegance, a high-end classic car meet taking place on the outskirts of Rome, Italy.

The model is billed as a just a concept, but our spies have already spotted the production model undergoing shakedown testing. It will compete in the same segment as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe when it arrives in showrooms in 2019.

BMW 8-Series concept leaked

Photos of BMW’s new concept previewing a modern 8-Series coupe have leaked ahead of the formal debut on Friday at the 2017 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
The shots, which surfaced on Wednesday on Belgian website AutoTijd, show a very modern and edgy design, plus a much more aggressive take on the signature BMW shark nose front end than we’re used to seeing. It will be interesting to see if fans take to the new elements such as the plunging hood, angular kidney grille and stubby rear.
Prototypes for the new 8-Series coupe show a milder execution of these themes. BMW is also out testing an 8-Series Convertible, and it’s possible we’ll see a fastback sedan at some point. The latter, if built, would likely be referred to as an 8-Series Gran Coupe.

The 8-Series will replace BMW’s 6-Series which is already no longer available as a coupe. BMW has confirmed the reveal will take place in 2018. We’ll likely see it on sale in 2019, as a 2020 model
All BMW is willing to say about the car is that it will provide a blend of sporty dynamics and luxury. CEO Harald Krüger described it as a “true luxury sports coupe” and a “slice of pure automotive fascination.”
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este kicks off on Friday on the shores of Italy’s Lake Como and runs until May 28. For more of our coverage on the event, head to our dedicated hub.

Ya, I think it is overall a very handsome car, based on the renderings.

The kidney grilles up front look sort of bucktooth-esque to me is my only qualm.

VIDEO: Sound Check! FIRST Clips Of The All-New BMW 8-Series And M8 Making A LOT Of Noise

It was only yesterday that I posted a story asking what the Spies thought would be powering the all-new BMW 8-Series and M8.

Well, it seems that we may have our answer now.

That's because there's not one, but two, telling videos that have surfaced online.

One was sourced from the Nurburgring 24 hour race where the M8 made its big-time debut. The second was straight from the 8-Series' debut at the Concours d'Elegance at Villa d'Este.

From what I can hear it seems pretty clear that both vehicles will feature V8s. Obviously, the M8 will get a bit more trickery to bump its power figures to something stratospheric. Note: The M8's exhaust is a mixture of badass and, frankly, very unfinished. Almost reminds me of a piece of landscaping equipment gone wrong.

BMW officially announces M8 and GTE alongside camouflaged 8 Series

The German automaker is heralding the return of the 8 Series flagship – they recently introduced the 8 Series concept and now unwrapped – sort of – the high-performance versions, the M8 and M8 GTE.
There are great times ahead for fans of the Bavarian automaker, if we judge solely on the spectacular 8 Series Coupe or the fact that its high-performance version is being developed in “in parallel” with the standard 8 Series. M GmbH is already hard at work teasing us about the arrival of the M8, and more so, the photos of the camouflaged car have been accompanied with details of the arrival of not one, but two M8 versions, with the addition of the GTE variant. The camouflaged prototypes are all we have to go on for now, but they do seem keen on upholding the styling of the 8 Series concept, and of course taking into consideration they will also feature all the enhancements we’d come to expect from an M model.
We can thus make out larger air intakes up front, larger wheels blue-painted brake calipers, and quad exhausts at the back. “The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility,” announces Frank van Meel, president of the BMW M Division. The M8 GTE meanwhile is actually being developed for the Le Mans race. “Developing a new racing car is always exciting, and in the case of the BMW M8 GTE the anticipation is that much greater still. We can’t reveal any pictures yet, but I can promise you that the BMW M8 GTE will look spectacular,” added on his part BMW Motorsports director Jens Marquardt. We know we’ll first see the BMW M8 GTE at the Daytona 24 Hours in January 2018.

BMW M8 Gets Rendered Into Production Guise

Presented during the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, on the shores of Lake Como, Italy, last weekend, the BMW 8-Series Concept has been rendered as a range-topping M8.

The white body is adorned with M stripes, revised bumpers on both ends, newly-shaped exhaust tips, carbon fiber side mirror caps and door handles and black-painted rims, among other tweaks that were applied by Aksyonov Nikita.

The M8 is really happening, as it was confirmed by the Bavarian automaker last week, but despite being eager to tell the world about their upcoming M car, by previewing it using a camouflaged prototype, the Germans weren’t keen on releasing any details about its powertrain.

One likely candidate is the running gear of the new M5, which means a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with nearly 600 horses and a tuned variant of the xDrive all-wheel drive system with a special rear-wheel drive mode that will make going sideways easier.

An exact reveal date for the brand's challenger to the likes of the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe has yet to be announced, but don't expect it to brake cover before 2018.

BMW M8 and M8 Convertible to use turbo V8 with more than 615bhp

Hot 8 Series has been confirmed, with an endurance-racing GTE variant hitting the Daytona 24 Hours in the new year

BMW is working to get its M8 and M8 Convertible ready for their launches in the coming months - and recent sightings at the Nürburgring show how hard the model is being pushed during development.
In the video below, a coupé can be seen driven at pace around the Nürburgring. A convertible was seen on nearby roads in the following days, suggesting that car is also being subjected to the same hard pre-production life as engineers finalise the drivetrain calibration and chassis settings of the upcoming performance model.
The M8 sports large air intakes, quad exhausts and more aggressive styling than its cooking 8 Series counterpart to signal its added potency. It's expected to make its debut in 8 Series form at the Los Angeles motor show, later this year, with the M8 coming shortly afterwards.

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

Video URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_p4D9l_Jf8

It’ll sit above the recently confirmed 8 Series, which itself was previewed by the 8 Series Concept, and will be joined by an endurance-racing counterpart, the M8 GTE. It's likely to be powered by a more highly stressed version of the next M5's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine and share the same 'M xDrive' four-wheel-drive system. The production car will have M’s signature quad exhaust pipes, larger brakes and uprated air intakes, BMW announced, although further details have not been given.
M division president Frank van Meel said: “The conception and development of the standard BMW 8 Series and the M model run in parallel. The future BMW M8 will build on the genes of the 8 Series and augment its DNA with added track ability and generous extra portions of dynamic sharpness, precision and agility. It all flows into a driving experience that bears the familiar BMW M hallmarks and satisfies our customers’ most exacting requirements.”
“We have been involved with the wider 8 Series project from the very beginning," van Meel told Autocar. "Our challenge as engineers was actually to ensure that the standard car wasn’t too sporty for its customers, because we wanted the M8 to feel like a proper step up. Also, because not all 8 Series customers want an M car.”

Insiders suggest the 8 Series and M8 will use the same platform as both the 7 Series and 5 Series, and that the M car will share much of the engine and drivetrain of the forthcoming four-wheel drive M5.
“For now, I can’t confirm that,” said van Meel, “except to say that we have watched the luxury sports coupé market closely and we see lots of four-wheel-drive cars within it already. We have also already proven that our M xDrive four-wheel-drive system doesn’t adversely affect the handling purity of the new M5, and some journalists have already had a chance to test that and to write as much. There’s nothing to fear from four-wheel drive.
“We certainly want to make a statement with this car. It will sit at the very top of our model range and, for now, we have no confirmed plans for any series production model above it, so we understand it must have a specification suiting its position in our hierarchy.” So expect more than the 615bhp the next M5 is likely to deliver.
The M8 GTE racing car, also announced at the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race, will be given its racing debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in January next year before returing a factory BMW effort to the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race in 2018 for the first time in six years. The standard M8 is likely to be revealed ahead of this; the 8 Series goes on sale in the second half of next year, although no reveal date has yet been provided either.
The M8 will carry a heavy premium over the standard 8 Series, so a starting price surpassing that of even the i8 supercar is certain; the Mercedes-AMG S63 kicks off at around £131,000, so the M8 should remain competitive with its Stuttgart rival.

BMW M8 rendering looks ready for production

BMW enthusiasts are quite excited for the revival of the new 8 Series. In fact, we have already seen the concept of the upcoming coupe a few months back at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. After seeing the concept, we have got artists rendering the proposed production version of it, based on what they've seen on the latest spy shots. As usual, BMW already previewed the M8 through a series of camouflaged photos, building hype for its release next year.

The rendering of the M8 production car was done by Cars.co.za. Overall, the virtual M8 looks both subtle and aggressive. To keep it close to its ancestors, the M8 has a pair of kidney grille up front, together with an aggressive diffuser and three vents to complete the front fascia. Unlike the concept where the M8 gets a set of sleek headlights, the rendered version instead gets fixtures that will remind you more of the production version.
For the side profile, the car features large vents that spans from behind the front wheel, stretching all the way to the rear. The rear end, on the other hand, gets design cues from the M2 and the M6, especially when looking at the tail lights. It has been given quad exhaust tips by the artist and new lip spoiler that’s not very prominent. As seen in the photo, the rendered M8 is finished in a bold shade of Melbourne Red Metallic that are complemented with a set of black wheels.
The new M8 will likely get the same S63 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 as the F90 BMW M5 that gives as much as 600 horsepower and 800 Newton-metres of torque sent to an xDrive (all-wheel drive) system.
By looking at the rendering and comparing it to the spy shots, it seems quite accurate to what might be the production version. By 2018, we should already see the final design of the 8 Series, an M8 GTE race car is also scheduled to be revealed at the Daytona 24 Hours in January 2018. It seems like 2018 will be an exciting year for BMW. If you want the 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) M8, you will have to wait until 2019.
In 2019, the company’s lineup will receive a significant revamp with planned releases for the X3, X4, X5, the M5 and the M8. The M8 is a high-end sporty coupe that will make its return to Le Mans racing. It is the first M8 model to hit the market after it first came out back in the 90s.

The Hot New BMW 8 Series Is Already Being Prepped For A Gran Coupe: Report

BMW is likely already preparing to introduce a four-door version of the new 8 Series shortly after the coupe and convertible models go on sale, which would be great if they didn’t already sell five other stylish luxury sedans or five stylish luxury SUVs.
We really shouldn’t be surprised by this classic BMW move. The 8 Series is already a replacement for the 6 Series and now presumably the 6 Series Gran Coupe, which was the four-door version of the sportier two-door version of the existing four-door 5 Series, so it’s only natural we’d get an 8 Series Gran Coupe eventually. I forgot to mention that the 6 Series was recently reborn essentially as just a 5 Series hatchback.
According to BMW Blog, the coupe will go on sale next summer, followed shortly by the convertible model, before leading up to the Gran Coupe presumably sometime in 2019. They don’t cite their sourcing, but I think we can all assume this sounds like something BMW would do. Oh, and expect some xDrive models thrown into the mix.
And that’s great, I guess, for all the people who don’t want a 7 Series because their kids’ heads don’t need all that space and they want to drive something prettier. It doesn’t matter that kids often grow up, because then they just get their own awkwardly named BMWs.

Whatever, though, BMW knows what it’s doing. We know what it’s doing. We should expect all involved to keep doing what they are doing. I’m not sure the 8 Series’ styling is an improvement on the dead 6 Series though, which is a shame.
