Default BMW plans 7-seat crossover for Spartanburg

The expansion of the BMW plant would boost production levels to 400,000 vehicles annually from 300,000 today, the Journal reported.

The long-rumored BMW X7 will be built at the company’s plant in Spartanburg, S.C., The Wall Street Journal reported today.
BMW will make the announcement on March 28, the newspaper reported, and will spend several hundred million dollars to expand the plant to build the seven-seat X7.
BMW had been rumored to be considering a three-bench vehicle to fill a gap in its crossover lineup.
Construction at the plant would boost production levels to 400,000 vehicles annually from 300,000 today, the Journal reported. The expansion would make the plant one of BMW’s largest and would add several hundred production jobs. BMW has 7,000 employees at Spartanburg.
The plant builds the X3, X5 and X6 crossovers, of which roughly half are exported to more than 130 countries. Most X7s produced at the plant will remain in the United States.

This will be a USA only vehicle I bet.

Definitely a need for it, imo. Im sure there is a decent market for people wanting a luxury 7 seat SUV.

Way to big for anywhere else in the world though.

Why the hell not, right? They've got a car for every other market segment...

The GL sells well for MB, so there is definitely a demand.

BMW makes X7 in Spartanburg official

BMW has made it official - there will be a flagship crossover called X7, and it will be built right here in the US of A. The announcement was made today, confirming rumors of the new model at the Spartanburg, SC factory that broke earlier this week.

"Plant Spartanburg was built to enhance and expand the BMW lineup, underscoring the BMW Group commitment to the United States" said Dr. Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the BMW board of management in a statement. "In addition to the X3, X5, X6, and the new X4, we are today announcing another all-new, larger X model to be manufactured exclusively at this plant for our world markets: the X7."

BMW will spend $1 billion by 2016 upgrading its South Carolina factory, which already produces the X3, X5 and X6. The plant is currently capable of producing 300,000 units per year, but with the big investment from BMW, capacity will climb to 450,000 units. 800 jobs will be added as a result of the investment and new and upcoming models.

We don't have any particulars on the new models, but compared to BMW's recent batch of niche-busters, a straight-up, full-size three-row utility to challenge the likes of the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz GL is about as mainstream as BMW has done in a long time. Once some details on this new model arrive, we'll be sure to let you know about it. Until then, scroll down for the full press release on the announcement from BMW.

BMW X7 spied for the first time?

Possible BMW X7 spy photo / moniteurautomobile.be

Due in 2017 or 2018

A prototype of what appears to be the BMW X7 has been spied for the first time.
The full-size SUV was spotted parked on a street somewhere in Bavaria, Germany hiding its identity with a camouflage pattern that we have seen on previous BMW prototypes. Most likely this is the already confirmed X7 set to come out in 2017 or 2018 as a competitor for the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and will ride on the same platform as the next generation 5- and 7-Series.
It will be manufactured at BMW's factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina where the automaker plans on investing 1 billion USD. The X7 is expected to adopt a seven-seat layout and judging by these spy shots it will have a longer hood, an elongated rear overhang and a bigger rear quarter window. The roofline is almost flat so there should be plenty of headroom for those sitting in the back.

BMW X7 render is a taste of what's to come

2017/2018 BMW X7 render / Automedia

Coming in 2017 or 2018

The already confirmed BMW X7 has been digitally imagined ahead of an expected 2017 or 2018 launch.
Towards the end of March we heard BMW announcing a huge $1 billon investment at the Spartanburg factory in South Carolina where they want to bump annual production rate to 450,000 cars by the end of 2016. The already confirmed X7 will be manufactured exclusively at this facility and is programmed to come out in 2017 or 2018.
Details about the X7 are scarce at the moment but it is believed the seven-seat crossover will be a global model and will ride on the same "35up" platform as the next generation 5- and 7-Series. If this turns out to be true, expect a lightweight construction combining aluminum, high-strength steel, magnesium and carbon-reinforced plastic which in the case of the 7-Series (G11) will enable a diet of approximately 200 kg (440 lbs) compared to the outgoing model.
The US-spec X7 will reportedly be offered with turbo inline-six and V8 gasoline engines along with possible straight-six diesels and a plug-in hybrid setup. Regardless of engine choice, all models will have an all-wheel drive setup and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
We won't be too surprised if BMW is preparing a concept for 2016 to preview the production X7.

I saw a new X5 for the first time in person the other day. One word to describe my reaction: Ugly. Since this X7 follows that look, I probably won't be a fan of it either.

Wouldn't be surprised. It is pretty much the only segment they do not have a vehicle for now.

They don't fill lots with hundreds of the same model like chevy and ford. They will be just fine to have an order only X7 with a couple to look at on bigger lots.

BMW has the 3 series as their volume seller. The rest are niche fillers that they build to order.

Look at BMWs sales over the past year or so. They keep breaking their own records and keep going up in sales %. I'd say they know what they are doing.

2018 BMW X7 concept to be revealed this September

BMW's largest SUV will focus on the US and Chinese markets but will be sold in Britain; it'll get a hybrid version

The BMW X7 will be previewed with a concept that's set to make its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show this September, before the final model goes on sale next year.
BMW's seven-seat Mercedes GLS and Range Rover rival will sit at the top of its model range alongside the 7 Series. An early vision for the production car will be demonstrated to the public in Frankfurt alongside the i3S, 6 Series GT and next X3.
The X7 has been spotted testing several times in the past few months, offering glimpses of the future SUV's design and scale. It will be the largest SUV yet produced by BMW and adopts a typical SUV body shape with a boxy passenger cabin and flat-faced front end.
Beneath the camouflage will be familiar BMW design features, such as halo daytime running lights and kidney grilles.
The seven-seat BMW X7 is being developed with the US and Chinese markets in mind but was confirmed for the UK market by BMW head of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson, last year.

Speaking to Autocar at the New York motor show, Robertson said: “We will have some versions that are top-end luxury, as well as more mainstream versions. I can’t talk about pricing now, but given that this car will have all the technology and luxury of the 7 Series, it gives you a pretty good idea of the price point we’re talking about.”
Previously, it was thought the X7 would be built on an extended version of the X5’s underpinnings, but Robertson said many parts are actually bespoke. “If you put both cars next to each other, the resemblance is small in terms of wheelbase etc. We’re not going to just extend the wheelbase, it’s a complete new panel cell.”
It is too soon for BMW to confirm which engines will go into the X7, but sources have previously speculated that it will feature a selection of six and eight-cylinder engines, such as the 3.0-litre diesel in 30d, 40d and 50d guises and the twin-turbo 4.4-litre petrol V8 from the X6 xDrive50i.
Robertson also hinted that the X7 would use engines from a wide range of BMW models, rather than just the X5 and X6. A hybrid model will almost certainly be offered, because BMW “sold more hybrids to the UK in the first two months of 2016 than in all of 2015 put together".

The BMW X7 will be built at the company's plant at Spartanburg in the US. It will have three rows of seats, making it a rival for the Cadillac Escalade and the Lincoln Navigator in that country and China.
The X7 has been under development since late 2015. The first sightings were of a chassis mule based on a 7 Series. The car, spotted testing in Scandanavia (and shown further back in the gallery), wore weights on its roof to replicate the higher centre of gravity of the future SUV.

Leaked 2018 BMW X7 Pictures Reveal The Kidney Grills Continue To Be A Big Problem

Heaven forbid BMW ever makes a full size truck, because the kidney grills on the ugly mug of this leaked 2018 BMW X7 concept are quite disturbing and don’t scale up very well

BMW finally wised up and delivered a large, three-row SUV. Despite having almost no effect on our sort of folk, BMW has finally made the obvious move it has waited so long—literally decades—to deliver on. The 2018 BMW X7 has been so obviously missing from its lineup, and now it’s leaked over on Bimmerpost just a couple of days before its reveal ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show.
It appears to have a port for charging, so we can safely assume there will be a hybrid model. The door handles look really confusing. The overall design is just the latest BMW-concept go-to look awkwardly stretched a few hundred pixels. And those look like a third set of headrests back there.

There’s been an option for three rows on the X5 before, but true luxury rests in those few short extra inches added to the wheelbase only a big ugly beast like the X7 could produce. Considering this is a leak, these images may not be the final deal, but it looks pretty legitimate. It being another “leak” also means we don’t know much else about the X7 just yet, but we should expect to find out very shortly.
Any suggestions for what BMW should do about those damn kidneys? It’s literally a big problem now.

H/t to Kevin!
