Default Volvo buys Polestar, promises electrified performance models

Volvo has acquired Polestar, signaling an increasing focus on high-performance models for the Swedish automaker.

The purchase includes the Polestar Performance division and the Polestar trademarks. Excluded from the deal, the Polestar Racing team will live on under a new name. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Several Volvo cars are already adorned with Polestar badges, but so far the offerings have been limited to small-batch special editions. Production of the latest S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar models has been capped at 750 units for the year, including 120 US-bound examples that were already reserved before the company announced pricing details.

With nearly 20 years of racing experience, Polestar engineers have helped develop engine upgrades, suspension tuning, brake upgrades and other enhancements for Volvo's sedans and wagons. The tuned S60 and V60 models feature a new twin-scroll turbocharger that brings engine output up to 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

"Driving a Volvo Polestar is a special experience," said Volvo Cars chief Håkan Samuelsson. "We have decided to bring this experience to more Volvo drivers, placing the full resources of Volvo behind the development of Polestar as the model name for our high performance cars."

Building upon previous hints, the company has confirmed that its Polestar ambitions include high-performance twin-engine electrified powertrains. Separate reports suggest diesel models and SUVs will also receive the tuning team's performance and handling treatments.

Following the buyout, Volvo suggests annual production of Polestar variants will grow to 1,000-1,500 units annually in the medium term. The company will also continue to offer Polestar aftermarket performance add-ons for standard models.

Despite the modest production increases in the next few years, the Polestar buyout could be the first step in establishing a more direct rivalry with Mercedes-AMG and BMW's M division.

Volvo’s Polestar Might Become Separate Performance Brand for EVs

Despite being Volvo Cars’ official performance arm since 2015, Polestar has always felt like a separate entity. Its current offerings for the North American market are limited to amped up versions of the S60 and V60 — distinctive in personality and produced in extremely limited quantities. However, Volvo’s parent company Geely wants to make a change, converting Polestar into its own global performance brand focusing on, get this, electric cars.
Apparently, Geely wants Polestar’s future role to mimic Mercedes’ AMG by having it continue to produce modified Volvos while also honing in on exclusive models singularly fixated on performance. However, if many of those are intended to be EVs, questions must be raised as to how things might change at Volvo.
Spilling the beans to AutoExpress, a senior source inside Geely specified that an electrified Polestar should break cover using Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) this year. Future performance models are supposed to employ the company’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) as a base, opening speculation for a hot little hatchback. Not that there’s any guarantee of North America ever seeing it. Currently, Volvo’s smallest offering is the S60 — which will persist using the SPA platform and an internal combustion engine.
Volvo will launch its first electric car in the Chinese market in 2019. The brand has also hinted it wants to produce SPA-based electric models and eventually evolve the entire lineup into hybrids. Polestar, however, is poised to beat it to the punch.
However, there is zero confirmation as to whether the upcoming Polestars will be silent running BEVs or use hybridized powertrains. While rumors of the Polestar Cyan Racing joining Formula E suggests the former is a distinct possibility, that level of commitment to pure electrics would place the performance brand in a league of its own.

Polestar Becomes Standalone Performance Brand, Confirms Electrified Future

See the minimalist logo in the featured photo? That’s the badge that will adorn future performance models from the Polestar standalone brand, electrified vehicles confirmed not to carry any Volvo badges whatsoever

It was not that long ago a report in the automotive media suggested that Volvo is planning on replicating what Mercedes-Benz did by spinning off AMG into Mercedes-AMG. And with Polestar, the Swedish automaker makes another step in its ongoing transformation under Geely’s oversight.

Thomas Ingenlath, a gentleman who’s currently the senior vice president of design at Volvo Cars, will assume the position of chief executive officer at Polestar. Thomas will be helped by Jonathan Goodman, which moves from senior vice president of corporate communication at Volvo to chief operation officer at Polestar. Quite a powerful combo, if you ask me.

“Polestar will be a credible competitor in the emerging global market for high performance electrified cars,” declared Hakan Sauelsson, Volvo Cars’ head honcho. “With Polestar, we are able to offer electrified cars to the world’s most demanding, progressive drivers in all market segments.”

Note the “all market segments” passage that ends the quote. For what it’s worth, the performance-oriented marque needs more than one model to establish itself as a viable competitor to the likes of AMG, M, and Audi Sport.

Full electric models are still some way off, with Polestar expected to offer plug-in hybrid technology in the first instance. Bearing in mind Volvo’s T8 Twin Hybrid powertrain isn’t exactly a slouch, it’s pretty safe to assume that Polestar is gunning for 500+ horsepower from a similar setup.

Bought outright by Volvo Cars in 2015, Polestar currently offers optimization packages for the Swedish automaker’s 60 and 90 Series models. In order to make sense from a financial standpoint, the go-faster brand will enjoy technological and engineering synergies with Volvo.

At the present moment, Polestar isn’t ready to give us a product plan or a debut date for its first model. Fret not, though, for more information will be made public this fall.

Polestar Establishes New Headquarters In Sweden
Polestar is in the process of spinning off from Volvo as the Scandinavian automaker’s dedicated electric performance brand. And that includes setting up new headquarters in Sweden.

The new facility will be located in Torslanda, on the same campus as the Volvo factory and head office. That’s far away, however, from the factory in China where Polestar will be producing its vehicles.
“The new Polestar headquarters will be the heart and home of our growing team,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “It is an architectural translation of what our brand stands for – it is pure and uncompromised.”
Slated for completion in September, the office building will encompass over 40,000 square feet of floorspace across three levels. Some 200 employees will work there, between the offices and development area. That’s up from the 110 that Polestar currently employs in facilities across the country.
The building will feature an open layout, with a rather imposing-looking white facade. There’ll be a showroom incorporated into the facility as well to showcase the electrified vehicles the brand is preparing to produce.
“We have created an uncompromising and minimalistic ‘cube’ as the main feature of the building that, with its technical solutions and details, creates a clear link between architecture and modern product design,” said Per Bornstein of Bornstein & Lyckefors, the renowned Swedish architecture firm tasked with the job. “One of its unique design features is a white facade made entirely in glass that lets around 60% of the light through, a first in Sweden and a challenge both in terms of design and engineering, but completely in line with Polestar’s progressive approach.”

Polestar Is Going To Make Volvo's Hybrids More Awesome

Good news if you like hybrids but want them to be fun: Volvo is going to start offering Polestar Engineered editions of their T8 plug-in hybrid S60 and V60 models. This not only brings the performance-oriented Volvo models enthusiasts have wanted to market, but it also proves that there is still light in this world. Specifically in Gothenburg.

The Polestar Engineered versions of the S60, V60 and XC60 will come with upgraded brakes, suspension and power figures. That’s right, not only are these the makings of a full-fledged performance upgrade, but they’re coming to the freaking wagon.

Regarding power, note that the Polestar Engineered models are receiving uprated versions of the T8 twin-engine setup rather than all-new powerplants. Still, the setup produces 415 horsepower and an eyebrow raising 494 lb-ft of torque for the turbocharged, supercharged and hybrid 2.0-liter four-cylinder.

For reference, that’s nearly 100 more lb-ft of torque than a base M3 despite being down about 30 HP. In a Volvo.
Of course, you can already get an XC60 with 400 hp and 472 lb-ft that sprints to 60 in about five seconds. But now, Volvo’s backing up those ambitions with six-piston Brembo brakes and adjustable shock absorbers shared with the Polestar One. You’ll know the Polestar Engineered models by the gold brake calipers.

These should make it to dealers early next year for traditional buyers and Care By Volvo subscribers, whenever that gets sorted.

Praise be.

Polestar 2 Reportedly Coming To Geneva With 310-Mile Range

The Polestar 1 is a stunning plug-in hybrid, but the $155,000 price tag will put it out of the reach of most consumers. However, Volvo’s division has already announced plans for a Polestar 2, which will compete with the Tesla Model 3.

The company hasn’t said much about the Polestar 2, but Evo is reporting the model will be unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. The publication goes on to say the sedan will ride on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) and will likely feature a unique design.

There’s no word on performance specifications, but the Polestar is reportedly targeting a range of 310 miles (499 km) between charges. If they are able to achieve their goal, the EV will have the same range as the Tesla Model 3 with the long range battery.

Besides the impressive range, the car will reportedly be geared towards performance. As a result, it could have an Öhlins suspension and an Akebono braking system, just like the Polestar 1.

There’s no word on output yet, but the company is clearly targeting the Model 3. In its current configuration, the entry-level Tesla can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h). When equipped with the optional all-wheel drive system, the dash to 60 mph (96 km/h) is cut to 4.5 seconds and the top speed increases to 145 mph (233 km/h).

Tesla also offers a high-performance Model 3 that can rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and top out at 155 mph (250 km/h). There’s no word if Polestar will follow suit, but it’s possible, as the company’s chief operating officer, Jonathan Goodman, told the publication the company wants to offer driver’s cars.
Goodman also confirmed the upcoming Polestar 3 will be a crossover coupe that will be focused on drivability, design and “offering something different.” The model will have an electric powertrain and it is slated to be launched towards the end of 2021.

Polestar 2 EV To Go After Tesla Model 3 With 350-Mile Range And Up To 400HP

Polestar’s second model will arrive next year as a Tesla Model 3 rival, offering up to 400hp and a driving range as high as 350 miles.

The figures were confirmed by the company’s chief operating officer Jonathan Goodman to Autocar, adding that the Polestar 2 will have a price range of between £30,000 and £50,000 in the UK.
Moreover, the Polestar 2 will offer 350 miles of driving range in its base version. “That’ll represent the lower ‘bookend’of our showroom range and, for now, it should give us as much access to the volume end of the EV market as we need,” said Goodman.
The Polestar 2 is expected to closely relate to the 40.2 Concept, a high-riding four-door sedan revealed back in 2017 alongside the 40.1 Concept that previewed the XC40 SUV.

Polestar will launch its second model next year, followed by a larger all-electric SUV called the Polestar 3. Goodman warned that any established manufacturer that will launch an electric-only sub-brand built on alternative design may be making a mistake, given the projected pace of the EV market.
“The global electric car market was worth 4m units in 2017,” he said, “but it’s quite widely expected to be worth 29m units by 2025. EV owners will come from all walks of life. So it’s a mistake to assume that, because the cars are electric, you have to make them quirky or futuristic. Other brands may be doing that but, if we’re looking at a market worth 30mil cars within seven years, it isn’t going to be niche; it’s going to be mainstream. So you just design a great-looking car – not one with a big blue flash down the side.”
“Electric cars will be just as appealing to young executives as they are to London retirees. It’s a new market, and purchase intentions will vary. So we’ve got to be a welcoming brand that’s not geeky, cliquey or judgmental.”
