Terrell Suggs says no hard sell needed to join Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Defensive end Terrell Suggs said he didn't need the hard sell from coach Andy Reid or other team officials after being claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs this week.

"I was really uncertain about my future last week, but I talked to Coach and it was a brief conversation and I was like, 'OK,''' Suggs said Wednesday as he joined the Chiefs for his first practice session. "I asked Coach, 'I just learned the hard way that a player like me just [doesn't] fit in anywhere.' He was like, 'Trust me, you'll fit in here.'
"It's hard to turn down [playing with] the reigning MVP [Patrick Mahomes] and a playoff team and just the exciting things they're doing, this atmosphere.''

The Chiefs recently lost defensive ends Emmanuel Ogbah and Alex Okafor for the season with injuries, so the timing was perfect for them late last week when the Arizona Cardinals placed Suggs, a seven-time Pro Bowler, on waivers.

"You've got to make sure he can still play,'' Reid said. "That's important. And then, how do they fit in your locker room? We've got a good locker room and a strong locker room. We have some very good leaders in this team, so how do they fit into that? You don't want to bring somebody in that's going to disrupt things. That's not where we're at right now.''

To that end, general manager Brett Veach approached defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who helped coached Suggs as an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens in 2013 and 2014.

"Steve goes, 'The guy loves football, he's a great teammate,''' Reid said. "That's all Brett needed to hear. The rest was Brett making it happen.''

Reid also said that Suggs didn't need much convincing to report to the Chiefs.

"He's not familiar with this, so did I tell him about what's going on here and did he want to hear it?'' Reid said. "Sure. He wanted to know what was going on. He's a thorough guy. But did I have to put the hammer down on him or anything? No. He had some questions, which guys do when they've been around. I think he liked what he heard. It wasn't a recruiting-type situation.''

The Chiefs have Suggs, 37, listed on this week's depth chart as the top reserve at left defensive end behind Tanoh Kpassagnon.

"Hopefully I can come in and contribute right off the bat,'' Suggs said. "This was a team that was a penalty away from the Super Bowl last year, so they're not missing much. Hopefully I can add that extra addition that we can kind of potentially do something special.''

Chiefs Dealt Massive Blow as Andy Reid Confirms DB Juan Thornhill Has Torn ACL

While the Kansas City Chiefs were given a major gift from the New England Patriots with the No. 2 seed for the AFC playoffs, they were also delivered a major blow on the injury front.

Rookie safety Juan Thornhill, who has been having an outstanding campaign, went down in the first half of the Week 17 game against LA with a concerning knee injury. On Monday, Andy Reid confirmed the youngster tore his ACL.

Just like that, Kansas City will be without him for the postseason.

Tyrann Mathieu will be missing his righthand man for the rest of the year.

The 6-foot, 205-pounder was taken in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft and started every game for KC this season. In his 16 games this fall, the Virginia product posted 57 tackles and three interceptions, one of which he took back for a touchdown.

No team can go on a Super Bowl run without facing some adversity in the postseason. For Kansas City, it's already arrived, but they'll look for other players on the defense to step up while Patrick Mahomes will continue to do his thing for the offense.

Chiefs Could Reportedly Lose Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy to Head Coaching Job

The Kansas City Chiefs were gifted the No. 2 seed in the AFC after the New England Patriots lost to the Miami Dolphins, so there's plenty to celebrate at the moment.

However, they could be facing turnover on the coaching staff this offseason. Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has emerged as a head coaching candidate with vacancies aplenty across the NFL.

Quote:
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet

The #Panthers have submitted a request for #Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, sources say. The plan is to interview him for their head coach opening this week. A strong candidate who Andy Reid has publicly supported as very ready.

2,522

7:01 AM - Dec 30, 2019

The Carolina Panthers are already interested in having him in for an interview, and it's only a matter of time before other head coach-needy teams like the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns could enter the mix.

With so few candidates on the market this offseason, Bieniemy, who has been calling the plays for a dominant Chiefs offense, could find himself leading a new team in 2020 and Andy Reid would thus be on the look for a new OC.

Chiefs fans can only hope Bieniemy getting job interviews doesn't distract them during their playoff run, especially since they're looking for revenge after last year's AFC Championship game loss.

Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy Finally Getting Coaching Recognition He Deserves With 3 Interviews Scheduled

Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy ought to have received a head coaching opportunity by now. Yet, with a distinct lack of interviews under his belt, Bieniemy has long remained one of the most under-appreciated assistants in all of the NFL.
Finally, Bieniemy is receiving his due this offseason while his Chiefs are on a first-round bye. Per Ian Rapoport, one of the men behind Patrick Mahomes' high-flying offense is set to interview with three teams shortly, including the Browns, Panthers and Giants.

Quote:
Ian Rapoport @RapSheet

#Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy is scheduled to interview with the #Panthers for their head-coaching job on Thursday and heíll meet with the #Giants on Saturday, source said. He also has a request from the #Browns. A busy man during the bye week.

617

6:57 PM - Dec 31, 2019

The NFL has a concerning shortage of African-American head coaches at the moment, and one can only hope teams aren't interviewing Bieniemy to satisfy the league's Rooney Rule. Bieniemy deserves a legitimate shot, and seems likely to get one since he's put in the time and improved various aspects of KC's offense year-over-year.

Quote:
#Giants have requested HC interviews with the following so far:

- KC OC Eric Bieniemy
- NE OC Josh McDaniels
- NE ST Coor. Joe Judge
- DAL Passing game Coor. Kris Richard
- Mike McCarthy
- BU HC Matt Rhule
- BAL DC Wink Martindale

Do you see the next Head Coachís name here?

22

3:28 PM - Dec 31, 2019

All three are exciting opportunities, especially considering Bieniemy's offensive mind. With young quarterbacks in tow in New York and Cleveland, and Cam Newton potentially remaining in Carolina should they choose, there's no telling what Bieniemy could do with the freedom to mold an offense of his choosing.

Eric Bieniemy may not be leaving Chiefs after all

The NFLís head-coaching carousel was rocked Tuesday morning, as the Carolina Panthers hired former Baylor coach Matt Rhule and the New York Giants went with former Patriots coach Joe Judge.

The Kansas City Chiefs might not be losing their offensive coordinator after all.

The Carolina Panthers rocked the NFLís head-coaching carousel on Tuesday, when news from Yahoo! Sports Pete Thamel broke that they were finalizing a deal to make Baylorís Matt Rhule their next head coach.

The Panthers were one of three teams who reportedly interviewed current Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy last week. Bieniemy interviewed with the Panthers on Thursday, the Cleveland Browns on Friday and the New York Giants on Saturday.
Here is some additional insight from NBC Sportsí Peter King as to why Bieniemy was not the Panthersí choice.

Quote:
Peter King @peter_king

Not the issue. Panthers knew when they interviewed Bieniemy that, potentially, he wouldnít be able to start the job for a month. Thatís the issue. The 4-week head start for Rhule was a game-changing advantage. https://twitter.com/RobGuy3/status/1214575550393700352 Ö

Bieniemy interviewed w/ Carolina BEFORE Rhule did. Nothing unfair here

About two hours after Thamelís report, ESPNís Adam Schefter reported the Giants had their head coach.

Quote:

Patriots wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator Joe Judge will become the next head coach of the Giants, leaving the Browns job as the only other possibility for Bieniemy. The Washington Redskins hired former Panthers coach Ron Rivera earlier in the cycle and Mike McCarthy agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.
The problem with Bieniemy getting the Browns position is that they are interested in a wide array of candidates.

Quote:

#Browns are casting a wide net: Brian Daboll, Robert Saleh, Eric Bieniemy, Mike McCarthy, Greg Roman, Jim Schwartz, and likely Josh McDaniels and Kevin Stefanski.

From a mere numbers standpoint, that doesnít favor Bieniemy. In addition, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is still scheduled to interview with the Browns on Friday.
With every other head-coaching job settled, the Browns can now take their time, as Schefter noted.

Bieniemy, 50, has been with the Chiefs ever since Andy Reid arrived to the team in 2013. Bieniemy spent five years as the teamís running backs coach (2013-17) before being promoted to offensive coordinator when Matt Nagy left to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears (201, a position he has held for the last two seasons.

If Tuesday is any indication, anything can happen ó but right now, it appears that for the second offseason in a row, Bieniemy will not become a head coach.

Congratulation to the Chiefs!

Havent been there since Super Bowl 4 in 1970. And I must confess my age. I was in diapers and probably barely crawling when they won it over the Vikings 23-7

Chiefs QB coach Mike Kafka will stick on Andy Reid’s coaching staff in 2020, sources say. The #Eagles had interest in Kafka as an OC candidate but they’re aware Reid isn’t letting him go. No official request so he technically wasn’t blocked. Possible he gets a new title in KC.
