Default First Picture Of Idris Elba In PACIFIC RIM

Click the jump to get your first look at Idris Elba in his futuristic armor for Pacific Rim. The big budget monsters versus robots film is directed by Hellboy's Guillermo del Toro.

MovieHole has scanned an image from the Total Film's new article about Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. Which is featured in the latest issue of their magazine.

SYNOPSIS - When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

"It's about world-saving but it's not a military movie. I want an adventure movie"
Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is all about scale. He is bringing his kaiju (strange beasts) monsters to the big screen, to do battle against giant robots. For authenticity he went as far as building streets that could vibrate, to give off the effect of a large creature stepping on the surface. And if these creatures are anything like the Kaiju mythology than we can expect one to be reptilian, another to have a crustacean look to it, and another could fly.

When working on a film of this scale you better make sure you have the right guys help you, and Guillermo thinks he has done just that.
"I went for raw power and beauty. I only hired guys who are absolute monster fans and robot fans.
How about those robots?
The robots are real machines rather than movie machines - gorgeous and functional at the same time. Each of the robots, when they step in, has their own personality. One has a huge spiky mace made of iron, and another has a giant battleaxe. You don't go, 'I wonder what his fighting style is?' You immediately understand what his fight style is!"
Guillermo actually went to his official fansite and clarified that quote about the spiky mace and giant battleaxe. He says, "Alas, the battle axe and spiked mace are misplaced quotes (my damn accent, I'm sure) I wont clear more for fear of spoilers- but the weapons are both melee and ammo. Anyway- The "cutlery" we have is pretty cool."

Where will the battles take place?
"We had a Tokyo scene that we shot here in Toronto. We had several Hong Kong scenes and a few scenes in Australia, through the television. We briefly see the kaiju take over San Francisco. The whole Pacific Rim needs a sense of danger."

"We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view."

If anyone but Del Toro was heading this I might be worried... but it sounds like it could be a pretty decent action/adventure...

Having Idris Elba is a positive also...

From the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, we have this new low-resolution still from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim providing us our first look at Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy). Hit the jump for it!

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. Don't miss Pacific Rim with the cast featuring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff when it hit theaters on July 12, 2013.

New PACIFIC RIM Image Featuring Star Charlie Hunnam

Check out another new image from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. The image features stars Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in costume with a support team behind them.

Director Guillermo del Toro tells USA Today that he is so involved in Pacific Rim that he is personally helping to create the sound effects for the film's monsters.
"I am an obsessive compulsive, and I can tell you without any shadow of a doubt I am involved very deeply on everything, from the pin on the lapel of a jacket to which way the monster's eye slants," he says. "I am essentially a socially inept creature. I dedicate my entire life to this. This is what I do, this is what I live for."

Every one of his monsters, which fans will be able to see for the first time on Saturday at a Warner Bros. panel, will have individual personalities and abilities. Some are adept at swimming in the depths of the sea, others fly, and one even vomits corrosive magma-like liquid. "There's a lot to love," del Toro quips.

SDCC '12: New Look At The PACIFIC RIM Costumes

With Legendary Picture's anticipated robot vs. monster flick having a presence at Comic-Con this week, two costumes from the Gullermo del Toro-directed movie have been spotted on display. Check them out after the jump.

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure ‘Pacific Rim.’

But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

First ‘Pacific Rim’ Footage Shown at Comic-Con, Guillermo Del Toro Spills Jaeger and Kaiju Details [Comic-Con 2012]

Although the Pacific Rim section of Legendary’s Hall H panel was attended by stars Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Ron Perlman, as is usually the case at Comic-Con, director Guillermo del Toro turned out to be the real star of the show.
The filmmaker spilled the beans about his highly anticipated “giant robots vs. giant monsters” film in his typically charming, foul-mouthed manner, including more details on the Kaiju (monsters) and the Jaegers (robots). In addition, we got our first taste of footage from the sci-fi epic. While I’m sorry to report that we don’t have a video embed for you at this point, hit the jump for a description of the footage, plus a rundown of highlights from the panel.
“I wanted to make not a war movie, but an adventure movie, with a huge, romantic sense of adventure, a sense of grandeur, and operatic battles,” del Toro explained at the start of the event. Based on the footage we saw, we’ve got high hopes that he succeeded. The promo opened with two people on a snowy landscape, scanning the area with a metal detector and digging into the earth. Their search is interrupted by a formidable Jaeger the size of a building rising up out of the ground — only to crash in spectacular fashion.
The video then showed us bits and pieces of the world, which looks fairly similar to our own. A bridge is destroyed when a massive, destructive Kaiju appears on it. We only got glimpses of the monster, never its entirety. We then cut to the people tasked with saving the world from these terrifying creatures, who are getting a rousing speech from leader Idris Elba: “Today, we are cancelling the apocalypse!”
As the lights went back up to cheering and applause, del Toro gleefully told us that the footage we had seen was “just the tip” of the iceberg. (“We only say that about icebergs,” he joked.) “You can get crazy or lazy, and I chose to be as crazy as I could. [I told my staff,] use creativity and passion and madness as a fuel to make this movie,” he said.
We only got good looks at one Kaiju and one Jaeger during the promo, but Del Toro revealed during the audience Q&A that we’d be seeing not only multiple Kaiju and Jaegers, but a wide variety of them. “We have approximately nine Kaijus, six or seven robots, each one has a unique ability, each one is distinguished,” Del Toro said. “We designed about 40 Kaijus and did an American Idol on them, [choosing the best one].”
He later added, in response to a different question, “We have flying monsters, sea monsters… We have monsters up the wazoo!” Don’t look for Godzilla or Nessie to pop up, however — del Toro revealed that all of his monsters would be original inventions created specifically for the movie, rather than pulled from legend.
The Jaegers, for their part, will be loaded up with all sorts of features. “We have rocket launchers, we have amazing close contact weapons, some artillery… Expect obscene robot porn and robot-on-kaiju action.”
As we’ve previously heard, each Jaeger requires two pilots to wrangle it: one controls the left hemisphere, while the other manages the right. Which, of course, raises the obvious question of what would happen if a single person tried to cover both sides. “That is answered in the film,” del Toro affirmed. “We wanted to show what happens when it’s a single pilot, and what happens to that pilot. [At point point in the film,] a Kaiju leaves one pilot alive and we see if the pilot is able to drive the Jaeger to safety. It’s a big ordeal.”
To capture the look and movement of the robots and monsters, del Toro said they did “a shitload of physical stuff” rather than rely too heavily on CGI. “One of the things we were very clear about is no fucking motion capture. I don’t want robots moving just like human beings, I want them to really move [like machines]. For the monsters, it’s the same.” In service of that commitment to realistic-looking motion, del Toro revealed that they’d designed the creatures “from the inside out, to feel like real physical entities that have real bones, weight, muscles.”
Pacific Rim opens July 13, 2013. Keep an eye out for our video reaction to the footage, and click here to see our previous coverage of the film.

Charlie Hunnam Talks PACIFIC RIM; Previously Seen Still Now in High Quality

Actor Charlie Hunnam discusses his relationship with Rinko Kikuchi's character in Guillermo del Toro's upcoming sci-fi epic Pacific Rim. Also, a previously seen still with the two characters is now online in higher quality.

Speaking with Screen Rant at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, actor Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy) talked about Pacific Rim, the upcoming science fiction epic directed by Guillermo del Toro. In the film, Hunnam’s character, Raleigh Antrobus, and Rinko Kikuchi’s character, Mako Mori, "use a “neural bridge” to link their minds in order to co-pilot an old model robot that could turn out to be humanity’s greatest hope." Hunnam describes the basic story of the film as a classic love story, but with a sci-fi twist.

"Well, there’s this whole imminent apocalypse that really distracts from a lot of the psychological stuff going on between them, but it’s really more of a process of both of us opening up our hearts again enough to be able to trust somebody; it’s a love story without a love story. It’s about all of the necessary elements of love without arriving at love itself: I need to trust [Mako] and respect her and open up my mind to her.

"It’s so fascinating, the whole caveat of how we operate this machine – which is through a neurological bridge – we’re neurologically connected. So everything in my head is available to [Mako] – and vice versa. If you imagine that – I mean, we’re all very careful about how we present ourselves and what we say, and how much of ourselves we let out. And to just allow someone into your brain, to give them complete access to every thought, and memory, and f*#cked up thing you ever did – and every great thing you ever did – its really a big proposition. And for two very damaged people who have decided they’re going to keep it all inside because they’re terrible human beings who have made so many mistakes – to go through a process of opening up enough to allow someone access to your head – it’s really the heart of this film."

Footage for Pacific Rim screened at SDCC this past weekend to extremely positive reception. Unfortunately, del Toro says that we shouldn't expect more footage to be revealed until the end of the year. Which is disappointing, since I'm dying to see some footage from the movie.

New PACIFIC RIM Blueprint Gives Us Our First Look At Crimson Typhoon

First look at the Chinese Jaeger, 'Crimson Typhoon,' from Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. This giant robot is equipped with three arms and requires three pilots to control it, not the usual two.

ShanghaiShock provides a translation:
1: 28-Go: A cockpit that also serves as an observation deck, it utilizes liquid software in order to provide a smaller electrical output trail. The cockpit fits three pilots and also serves as a command center with telescopic abilities.

2: 34R0111/STERNO: A cork like command center base that allows greater maneuverability on the Jaeger's head

3: OSIH: Achilles shock absorber

4: 11X///: 3 person jaeger control cockpit

5: Electric-plasma Cannon (Its the text box with the words "cell-tip" and "anteverse" written in it): A cannon with portable multi-layer cell tip and anteverse encryption attatchments. This allows the cannon to have bio-recognition abilities that allow the cannon to focus on Kaiju bone structure.

PACIFIC RIM's Jaeger Gipsy Danger Revealed In New Image

With the official trailer coming out soon, Warner Bros. have released this cool new shot from Guillermo del Toro's upcoming science fiction spectacle Pacific Rim, featuring a giant robot, Jaeger Gipsy Danger. Check it out...

Starring Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films), Pacific Rim will be released on July 12, 2013.
