The Gifted’s Trask Industries Connections

This week’s episode of The Gifted, ‘eXtreme measures,’ continued the show’s slow-burning main narrative, while also teasing a few potential future arcs. The most intriguing moments, however, came towards the end of the episode. As Reed and Sage work to decrypt the hard drives the Mutant Resistance stole last week, more information on the Sentinel Services’ extra-legal operations came to light. The most intriguing of those – at least, for any fans of the X-Men movies or comics – was the reveal that Trask Industries exists in The Gifted.
While the relationship between Dr. Roderick Campbell and Sentinel Services has remained vague so far, this week brought both forces together as a nefarious plan against the MU began to take shape. As it turns out, that agenda involves Trask Industries, who appear to be the company for which Dr. Campbell works. Not only are they behind the brainwashed Hounds, mutants made to hunt their own, but Reed reveals that his father actually spent decades working for Trask.

Trask Industries

Fans of the comics will be well-versed in Bolivar Trask and his Sentinel program, but X-Men movie fans know his work as well. Played by Peter Dinklage in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Trask’s Sentinels mark one of the biggest threats the mutants have ever faced. By bringing his company into the world of The Gifted, the MU now face that same potential for danger. What’s more, but the series may be even more tied to the films than many previously believed.
While the movie tweaked and condensed things a bit, the basic beats of Bolivar Trask remain intact. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for 1965’s X-Men #14, Trask is one of mutantkind’s oldest foes. Once an anthropologist, Trask fears for the future of humanity as mutants rise in the world. Eventually, he helps create the Sentinels, ostensibly built as peacekeepers but designed to detain and even kill mutants. Trask appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand (played by Bill Duke) in a very different role, and his company was referenced in The Wolverine. Days of Future Past, however, finally brought the mutant-hating technologist to life and his deadly Sentinels with him.
In the film’s original timeline, Trask’s rise and that of the Sentinels leads to a dystopian future for mutants when Mystique kills the genius scientist. The film shows Wolverine and the X-Men work to stop this event, and Trask is eventually detained and the Sentinel program is ended. X-Men: Apocalypse doesn’t touch on the fate of Trask, his company, or the Sentinels, so it’s not clear what the new timeline holds for the character. There are some clues in the previous version of events, however, that may be relevant to The Gifted.
During the viral marketing for Days of Future Past, a site was launched showing great moments from the alternate history. After the rise of the Sentinels, 1989 saw Trask and the FBI team up to help solve crimes using DNA evidence. Trask, however, used the initiative to secretly create a database of mutants. In 2009, Trask Industries created a power-inhibiting collar, while the next year saw the company turn the Xavier School into a mutant research lab.
While it may be tempting to assume The Gifted takes place in this timeline, given the existence of both a database and collars similar to what Trask created, the lack of giant Sentinels would seem to rule this out. Still, the similarities and the existence of some iteration of Sentinels do make it seem as if some version of Trask or his company exist in the world of The Gifted. And given we don’t know what happened to the character or his work following Days of Future Past, there’s still a strong chance The Gifted is part of the main X-Men timeline. After all, the disappearance of the X-Men strongly mirrors Logan as well.
Dr. Campbell and the Hounds

The idea that Trask exists in The Gifted isn’t the only thing tying the show to the varied events of Days of Future Past. A few episodes ago, we met Pulse and learned that someone was brainwashing mutants and placing them with the Sentinel Services. This week, we finally met some of them and they seem to share a lot in common with their comic book counterparts. In the Days of Future Past story from the page, the Hounds are indeed mutants who have been experimented on until they becomes hunters for the government. In fact, their taskmaster is Ahab, the cyborg villain whom Dr. Campbell eventually becomes.
While some streamlining has been done, the inclusion of Dr. Campell, the Hounds, and the ties to Trask Industries and the Sentinels seems to point at a connection between The Gifted and one of the X-Men’s most famous dystopian futures (there have been a few). By tying Reed’s father into the story, meanwhile, it seems that the von Strucker family from the comics will also have ties to Trask.
We’ll be learning more about them next week, and the examination of Reed’s parents and possible siblings should also shine more light on the role of Trask in The Gifted. When it does, we may see some of the X-Men’s biggest villains brought to life on the TV series. We may also finally learn just how connected The Gifted is to the X-Men movies.

The Gifted Drops Major Hints About the X-Men’s Fate

The Gifted is at the halfway point of their freshman season, and things are looking good for the latest Fox TV offering. The Gifted is doing a great job of combining the fun stuff about mutants (appealling powers and abilities) with the grittier elements of this world (government crackdowns, discrimination, life on the run), and fans are excited to see where the Strucker family go next.
There are still plenty of questions that fans of The Gifted are asking, though, and the biggest one is ‘where does this fit with the rest of the X-Men on screen’? The Gifted has named-dropped the X-Men more than once, and it’s clear that there are lots of connections between this series and the movies. However, there is no clear link in terms of timeline, and The Gifted hasn’t crossed over directly with the films (yet). Last week, in ‘got your siX’, and this week in ‘eXtreme measures’, we learned a little bit more about where this legendary team is in The Gifted, although it seems that things still aren’t entirely straightforward.

The X-Men Cinematic Universe

Of course, fitting a new series into the larger X-Men cinematic universe is complicated further by the fact that Fox’s mutant world isn’t straightforward at all. It’s a vast, sprawling universe that takes place over multiple timelines and has already been rebooted and included at least one alternate future. The primary timeline re-started in 2011 with X-Men: First Class, while the follow-up, X-Men: Days of Future Past cleared the timeline up with the use of an alternate future. At this point, the central film franchise exists at a point somewhere in the ’80s/’90s, where the classic X-Men team are still teens. Deadpool, meanwhile, exists at a point not too far in the future, where the X-Men still live in the mansion and are active, and Logan takes place in a far future (which may or may not be an alternate one), where the mutants have been almost entirely wiped out. Legion, the first X-Men TV series, also reportedly exists in this same massive world, although there is absolutely no telling where in the timeline it sits.
It’s also been stated by producer Lauren Schuler Donner that both Legion and The Gifted exist in their own ‘astral plane’ of the X-verse, and are not directly connected in one world. Creator Matt Nix has also played it safe with the idea that the X-Men and The Gifted are connected-but-not, saying that they are one of the many timelines spinning off from the primary films:
“The idea is that this is definitely its own universe. We’re not in the same exact timeline as any particular movie or comic, but that said we do share some characters with the movies and comics. The idea is we’re doing our own thing. As they say, there are many streams.”
Connections Between The X-Men And The Gifted

Despite this feeling that The Gifted are doing their own thing, there are plenty of ways in which it could intersect with the films. The Sentinels have appeared in Days of Future Past, where they were able to destroy the mutants of the world in one dystopian future. In The Gifted, a different kind of Sentinel exists: the Sentinel Services. A government agency, rather than a humanoid battle-bot, this kind of Sentinel is still determined to wipe out the mutants, but isn’t having quite the same success as those we’ve seen before.
In addition, there are plenty of characters who exist in both worlds, although there have been no direct crossovers (as of yet). Polaris (Emma Dumont) is probably the biggest name in The Gifted, as the daughter of Magneto, but she hasn’t mentioned her famous father yet (so it’s very probable that she’s unaware of the connection). The Struckers themselves are a nod to the comics and the Von Struckers. Blink (Jamie Chung) is also a familiar name from both the comics and the film franchise, as a version of the character also appeared in the alternate future of Days of Future Past, although played by a different actress (BingBing Fan). All of these could still just be considered callouts to the comics, of course… but The Gifted does also name-drop the X-Men themselves.
The Gifted’s X-Men References

The Gifted’s X-Men References

The Gifted has mentioned the X-Men a few times since the pilot, but those mentions have been somewhat conflicting (just to confuse the fans even further). In the first episode, Eclipse (Sean Teale) name drops both the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, saying that “we don’t even know if they exist any more“. Then, in ‘got your siX’, Thunderbird (Blair Redford) brings the X-Men up again, saying that the X-Men chose him to be a part of the revolution, and that they said a war was coming. Finally, in this week’s ‘eXtreme measures’, a flashback to three years ago shows Thunderbird telling Eclipse that “the X-Men are gone” and now it is up to the resistance to help the mutants survive.
Combined, these mentions seem to suggest that both the Brotherhood and the X-Men not only existed in this universe, but were very well known in the recent past. The Resistance had some kind of contact with the team at the start, in order for them to choose members and to predict a war, but have obviously fallen off the radar since; no contact, no public appearances. It seems that while some members of the resistance are clinging to the idea that the X-Men will return to fight by their side, others have given up, and believe that they are all that is left of the mutant race. What’s yet to be explored is how, exactly, the X-Men disappeared.
Will The X-Men Appear On The Gifted?

While The Gifted may not be part of the same timeline as the primary X-verse, that doesn’t mean that there is no possibility of a crossover or some cameos in the future. The X-Men have now been mentioned several times, and it feels like the Resistance may go looking for the fabled team. If nothing else, they’ll want to find out what happened to them, so that they can prevent it happening again. With the Brotherhood also existing in this world, it seems likely that Polaris may explore exactly how she gets her magnetic powers; the combo powers of the Strucker kids are already showing how mutant families can be stronger than solo mutants, and the relationship between Polaris and Magneto is a great way to explore this further.
Of course, nothing is confirmed yet, but as the first season of The Gifted wraps up, it looks like the X-Men aren’t off the table just yet.

'The Gifted' Star Emma Dumont Teases Magneto's Role

X

Magneto’s presence is going to be felt in a major way in the remaining episodes of The Gifted’s first season.
ComicBook.com spoke to Emma Dumont, The Gifted star who plays Lorna Dane, Magneto’s mutant daughter Polaris, about Magneto’s growing influence in the series.
“Coming up in the season, and specifically episodes 12 and 13, our finale episodes, Polaris struggles with...she thinks there are two paths,” Dumont said. “What she believes and what she wants, what her personal beliefs are and what she thinks is right, and then the other path is what she was born to do, which is be Magneto's daughter, which is to take over his legacy. But what Lorna doesn't realize is those two things are exactly the same, and she finally does realize that eventually in the season, later on, and that really terrifies her."
Polaris know her father primarily through reputation. The master of magnetism and his mutant terrorist organization the Brotherhood of Mutant do exist in the world of The Gifted, though they disappeared at the same time that the X-Men did. Dumont reveals that Polaris has received some correspondence from her distant father, and even though Lorna may resent him, Dumont believes it's clear that Polaris is Magneto's true heir.
“She hasn't heard great things about her father,” Dumont continued. “She's heard bad things about her father, in fact. Her chosen family, the Mutant Underground, they don't think highly of him. They think he was a bad guy. Anyone would hurt a human is bad, even if it saves 200 mutants lives. It's still bad. But for her it's not that bad. You know, having this man who, every couple of years will reach out to her, very ominously, or whatever, but still refuses to be in her life, she hates him, as most daughters whose father's abandoned them would. But she still can't deny she is exactly like him, in every way. Even her mutant abilities are the same. She is his only living birth child. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, sure. They're just made from his DNA. She is literally exactly like him, and she can't deny that, but she's really scared of it. She's really, really scared of it."
“Magneto plays a big part in the rest of the season," she added, "even though he's never there, and it's a big part of her storyline.”
Currently, Polaris is pregnant, and her recent reunion with lover Eclipse after she was rescued from prison should have been the beginning of a happier time, or at least as happy as it gets when you're constantly on the run from authorities. However, Eclipse's decision to go back to work for the cartel in order to pay off the debt he owes his old girlfriend, Carmen, has cast a pall on their relationship, and the similarities between Eclipse's behavior and what Polaris knows of Magneto's actions only makes matters worse.
“Seeing Marcos go back with Carmen was really scary for her,” Dumont said. “She doesn't need Marcos. I think she thinks she doesn't need him, but I think we all know she does. Birthing a baby to a man that willingly would hurt people, and blow things up, and do things for no reason, not to save anyone, not to do any good, would use his powers for evil, really, made her really scared. And knowing that her father is not part of her life, Magneto, and that he's someone who has been viewed as using his powers for evil, even though she doesn't. Later on in the season we get to all that, but she doesn't want Marcos to be Magneto. She doesn't want Marcos to abandon this child like her father did her. So, that's also a thought that's running in her head."
“And I think Marcos doesn't trust her,” she said. “Her mental disorder comes up later in the season, and Marcos can't really tell if the things she's saying or doing is because of her, if it's because of the pregnancy hormones, or is it because of her mental illness, So, he's very on edge on her. But that offends her. She gets offended when he chalks her feelings and thoughts up to mental illness. That's rude and disrespectful."
As exciting as Magneto's involvement with The Gifted is for fans, however indirect it may be, Dumont is determined to make sure Polaris' agency is recognized.
“I think something I've struggled with personally is I want to make sure that people understand that her choices are her own," Dumont added. "No matter what, no matter who is influencing her, no matter what happens, her choices are always her own. Just like her father. No one can tell her what to do.”

'The Gifted' X-Men Connection Will Be Explored in the Season 1 Finale

X

X-Men fans should expect big things from the two-hour season finale of The Gifted.
Earlier in the show’s first season, a scene revealed that the X-Men had chosen Thunderbird to help lead the Mutant Underground, confirming that the Mutant Underground wasn’t just a separate organization with similar goals, but a group that was seemingly put in place for a purpose just before the X-Men disappeared.
ComicBook.com spoke with The Gifted star Emma Dumont, who plays Polaris, the founder of the Mutant Underground’s Atlanta cell, and asked if this was a mystery that would be further addressed this season or if eager fans would have to wait until further down the road (assuming The Gifted is renewed). Dumont had good news.
“That's definitely something for this season,” she said. “It's actually something for the finale. Yeah, the X-Men, for many episodes we kept saying, ‘The X-Men chose us, the X-Men chose us.’ We find out now, the X-Men specifically chose Lorna and Johnny, Thunderbird and Polaris. They chose them. I don't know if it's because of their lineage, or if they have had their powers for a long time. You know, yeah, maybe their family histories, I'm not sure, but they chose them for some reason. Thunderbird had an easy time with it. He accepted the role of leader. He's from the military, he knows what it's like to lead, he knows what it's like to save lives.”
The burden of leadership weighs heavier or Lorna, as Dumont explained.
“Lorna, however, had spent her whole life being shamed, being told she was different, or bad, in many different ways,” she said. “She has a mental illness, she has a hard time with authority, she's a mutant, she's all these things that are bad, no, wrong. Her father abandoned her, and her parents passed, her foster family abandoned her. There was so much she was shamed for, so it was harder for her to accept a leadership position, and we kind of see more of that towards the end of the season, which is really cool.”
The Gifted will have a two-part finale airing in a single two-hour block on January 15, 2018.

THE GIFTED: Polaris Draws Inspiration From Her Father In The New Promo For The Two-Part Season Finale

FOX's hit X-Men spinoff drama, The Gifted, returned from its winter hiatus in a big way tonight and in two weeks, get ready for an absolutely explosive season finale. Come check out the new promo now!

We knew the season finale would delve into Lorna's (Emma Dumont) mysterious past, but it looks like it'll be going deeper than we could've imagined as she begins to draw inspiration from her legendary father, the one-and-only Magneto.

While the preview doesn't specifically namedrop him, it's hard to imagine that the two-hour finale won't at least give us some idea about his whereabouts. Plus, it sounds like we'll also learn a lot more about what happened to the X-Men and why they chose the Underground to lead the mutant revolution.

Watch the new promo for the two-part season finale below:

'The Gifted' Officially Renewed for Season 2

Fox has renewed The Gifted for season 2, making the official announcement of the X-Men series' continuation during the Winter 2018 TCA Press Tour.
The Gifted's continuation was something of a question, as the show hit season-low ratings going into December, with just 2.8 million viewers, and a .8 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Given the steady decline in ratings since the series premiere (4.85 million viewers and 1.5 in the 18 to 40 demo), The Gifted was definitely considered a "bubble show." With the season 2 announcement, it's clear that Fox is re-investing in the show for at least one more season, allowing time for the digital streaming services and home video to help build awareness.

The Gifted has steadily increased its use of X-Men comic book lore, introducing characters like Ahab and his Hounds, or The Stepford Cuckoos, to referencing major characters like Magneto, The Hellfire Club, or the X-Men themselves. That's only built the level of excitement and anticipation for fans who have stuck with the series, while opening the door for the show to expand into much more comic book lore in coming seasons.
You can check out the official press release from Fox, below, which includes details on the upcoming two-hour Gifted season 1 finale, as well as some... creative spin on the current ratings of the show:

FOX has renewed THE GIFTED, the family adventure series set in Marvel’s “X-Men” universe, for a second season.
In the all-new, two-hour season finale of THE GIFTED, “eXtraction/X-roads,” airing Monday, Jan. 15 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, Dr. Campbell (guest star Garret Dillahunt) attends the Humanity Today summit, attempting to take the Hound program national, while some of the team at Mutant HQ go on a dangerous mission to stop his efforts. Then, the Mutant HQ comes under attack. With everything to lose, alliances shift and relationships are put to the test.

Ranking as the No. 3 new drama of the 2017-2018 season, THE GIFTED is averaging a 2.0/7 in Live + 7 ratings and has built upon FOX’s year-ago time period by +18%. The GIFTED averages 8.3 Million Total Viewers across platforms, representing a +146% lift from its Live + Same Day delivery.
The Gifted wraps up season 1 with a two-hour finale on Monday, January 15th @ 8/7c on Fox.

'The Gifted' Showrunner Matt Nix on What the Disney-Fox Merger Means for the X-Men TV Series

There's been plenty of talk of what the 20th Century Fox and Disney merger could mean for the X-Men movies. But what about X-Men television?
Two X-Men television series debuted in 2017. Legion airs on cable network FX, while The Gifted airs on FOX. Both will see second seasons in 2018.
Could the merger mean big changes for The Gifted? ComicBook.com spoke to showrunner Matt Nix ahead of tonight's season finale. Nix said the merger likely won't affect Season Two since the deal still needs to go through regulation. Looking past that, he broke the question down into two parts. The first is what the merger could mean behind the scenes.
"We do find ourselves in a sort of odd position in being a show that was co-produced by two different companies that under this merger would now be the same company. So, that's good," Nix says. "The thing that would really change our lives and really change the show a lot would have been if Marvel wasn't involved, you know what I mean? The fact is Jeph Loeb is an executive producer on the show. We talk to Jeph Loeb all the time. He's weighing in. So under a merger, barring lots of executive changes or something, we're talking to the same set of people, only they have a slightly different role in the corporate structure. For us anyway, we're already pretty much doing things in a Marvel way."
The other half of the equation is how the merger could affect things on the screen. A merger with Marvel could change The Gifted's position in relation to other projects, particularly the movies. It could also affect what intellectual properties the show is able to play with.
"The other side of it would be the way that our show kind of echoes and reflects what the movies are doing," Nix explains. "It remains to be seen, in a universe where priorities around shared universes are different, how that relationship will evolve. So it could be, it's like a whole new set of people and it's like a whole new set of attitudes and it's a whole new way of doing things. And we look at how Agents of SHIELD does things. That's a different deal. So that's that company."
"And then the other question would be, and these are questions that are just completely unresolved at this point is, what would this mean for our access to certain kinds of characters, or storylines, or that kind of thing?" Nix adds. "And that would just have a lot to do with what would the merged companies plans be for the movies and do they see our show as a potential support for that? That would be my vote, right? Or do they see our show as something that just really needs to stay out of their way? Or somewhere in between."
Nix says he doesn't want The Gifted to imitate the movies, but he would like to establish a connection.
"Does that give me the opportunity to come in and say like, ‘Hey, let me set something up for your movie or let me echo your movie in some cool way.’ And if I could do that then that would be neat, because I'm generally just guided by, as a fan, what would I want to see? And what would I want? As a fan, I don't want my TV show to do the same thing that my movie is doing. But at the same time, I don't want my TV show to be just like, you know, completely unconnected or just totally the bastard stepchild of what my movies are doing either. So, I'm going to push for not bastard stepchild but also not trying to do the movies on television because I think both are bad ideas."

How 'The Gifted' Can Improve in Season 2

X

Fox's X-Men movie spinoff series The Gifted just wrapped a pivotal season 1 run, after securing season 2 renewal very late in the game. Since The Gifted has been such a "bubble show," season 2 will need to improve things in several important ways, to help build the audience of Marvel and X-Men fans that are invested in the show.
Taking our own analysis and combining it with what the fan community is already saying, here's how The Gifted can improve in Season 2.
Hit the Ground Moving
One of the biggest criticisms of The Gifted season 1 is that it (literally) goes nowhere. After the pilot introduced a 'family on the run' premise to audiences, The Gifted slowed way down, confining most of the season 1 to The Mutant Underground headquarters, Sentinel Services detention / transportation locales, or Trask Industries labs.
The Gifted season 2 needs to hit the ground moving. Instead of constantly hanging out around the same locations like the cast of a sitcome, The Mutant Underground team (and their rivals) should have missions that take them to new settings for new arcs every few episodes or so. Nothing makes a sophomore slump worse than falling into a rut.
New Mutants
Nobody enjoys when superhero shows fall into arbitrary "freak of the week" formats, but The Gifted is uniquely suited to making something worthwhile from the concept.
Given where season 1 left things, there's room for The Mutant Underground and/or the new Brotherhood to go on a recruitment drive - especially if they're recruiting with purpose. If there is a larger mission (or series of missions) to be completed in season 2, then there's just as much reason to acquire mutants who can help complete those tasks. So whether its The Underground, The Brotherhood, or The Hounds who come seeking them, The Gifted season 2 has opportunity to introduce and develop a lot of new mutant characters.
Costumes
Now that The Gifted has split its mutant characters into three factions (The Mutant Underground, The Brotherhood, The Hounds), it's time to make them actually look like proper superheroes and supervillains.
This isn't just an arbitrary request, either: with the Underground, Brotherhood and Hounds on a collision course, the various fighters of each faction need to start actually suiting up for battle - going at it in hoodies, tee-shirts and ripped jeans just isn't going to cut it anymore.
With the resources of the Hellfire Club and Charles Xavier's estate both out there, the characters of The Gifted just need to access them, which would be all the explanation needed for some armored costume upgrades.
A Big Bad
The Gifted season 1 introduced many antagonists for the Mutant Underground, from the government and Sentinel Services, to Trask Industries and Dr. Campbell's Hounds, to Hellfire Club, its Stepford Cuckoos agents, and the legacy of warring ideologies between Charles Xavier and Magneto.
However, in that swirling mass of threats and opposition, there is no real nefarious "big bad" for the series to center around. Larger villains have been hinted at (the Stepfords' mysterious handler; Dr. Campbell's comic book villain connection), but there is no "love to hate" bad guy to pull things together. Given the expansive X-Men comic book lore out there, a villain shouldn't be hard to pull. The Gifted season 2 would do well to find the sort of antagonist that could pull all these branches of character and story together in a thrilling way.

Why The Gifted Season 1 Didn’t Mention Magneto By Name

While The Gifted Season 1 carefully established that Polaris is Magneto’s daughter, the series avoided giving the Master of Magnetism his name. Now, showrunner Matt Nix has explained why.
Comic books fans were thrilled when Emma Dummont was cast as Polaris in The Gifted. The character is one of the most powerful X-Men, in large part because of her ancestry. She’s the daughter of Magneto, and possesses all his power. In the comics, Lorna Dane has often struggled with that legacy. The Gifted Season 1 followed a fairly traditional comic book plot in that respect. Curiously, though, the series never actually used Magneto’s name. It settled for dropping obvious hints; it showed Lorna toying with a medallion, for example, and the Cuckoos told Lorna her father was “a king” in the Hellfire Club.

Fans had been curious as to why the show skirted around Magneto’s name. Now showrunner Matt Nix has finally explained. Speaking to TVLine, Nix confirmed that he’s wary of treading on movie turf. “Not to be coy, but we don’t want to stumble into movie territory,” he explained. “That said, canonically, Polaris’ father is Polaris’ father.”

Fox wouldn’t be the first studio to restrict a showrunner from using their movie characters in a small-screen adaptation. Arrow had big plans for Harley Quinn, for example, but was forced to shelve them after Warner Bros. began work on Suicide Squad.
From a narrative viewpoint, this deliberate decision not to name Magneto will actually be a part of Polaris’s character arc. “There’s a little Voldemort to it, if that makes sense,” Nix explained. Magneto is the villain who made the mutant race look bad. He’s the one who really kicked off this dystopian timeline where mutants are hated and feared. Just as in the comics, Lorna’s reaction this knowledge will be very complex. Nix continued:

“We’ve taken what is kind of a necessity, in terms of us needing to stay out of the way of the movies, and turned it into a virtue in our eyes. It’s now a feature of the characters that they don’t really want to talk about — [that Lorna’s father is] the leader of the mutant group that made mutants look horrible and kind of put them in the position that they’re in now.”
Nix’s statements carry strong implications for Season 2. Fans are eager to learn more of the show’s history; the series, however, will carefully avoid any element that’s set to turn up in the movies. That means the X-Men and the Brotherhood will never return; it’s even possible the show will never reveal why these two groups have disappeared. That’s sure to disappoint some fans, but please others. After all, it means Emma Dumont and her fellows really are the stars of their show.

'The Gifted' Moves to New Day and Time for Season 2

Fox’s X-Men television series The Gifted will be moving to a new night for its second season.

Fox has revealed its fall 2018 schedule ahead of this afternoon’s upfront presentation. The schedule reveals that The Gifted will air on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET ahead of the just-renewed Lethal Weapon.

Fox has not revealed the series’ return date.

The Gifted’s first season was broadcast on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET following Lucifer.

The Gifted creator and showrunner Matt Nix spoke to ComicBook.com following the first season's finale and how Lorna’s defection to the Hellfire Club will shape season two.

“So, going into Season Two, you know, things will have changed, and they will change for everybody, and they're all going to have to rediscover and redefine their relationship to society,” Nix said. “But then one thing I also think a lot about in Season Two is, when you think about the movies, generally speaking, they have to define, ‘There’s two sides. There's this side and there's this side.’ Well, we, for this first 13-episode run, we've already kind of explored the idea that they're not exactly on different sides, the beginnings of the Hellfire Club and the Mutant Underground. They're kind of working towards the same goals, and they're in a position where they kind of need to team up. I mean, there's not a lot else they could do.

“And then, going into take two, I like the idea of that there are all sorts of ways of dealing with this new circumstance that everybody finds themselves in, and not everybody's going to agree, and not everybody's going to choose one of the sides that we've defined on the show. Exploring those other sides too. I think it's going to be very interesting. There are going to be common enemies, people who are more aligned with one side than other. There are going to be people who are completely selfish in their motives. All of those things are going to come out in Season Two, where the situation for mutants has got considerably more complicated.”

In a separate interview, Nix also teased that season two may reveal more about the events of 7/15, the mutant incident that shaped much of anti-mutant sentiment and politics as seen in The Gifted.

Skyler Samuels, who plays the Frost sisters - known as the Stepford Cuckoos or Three-in-One in Marvel Comics - has been upgraded to a series regular in Season Two, suggesting she will have a larger role to play as Polaris’ ally in the Hellfire Club.

No further details on The Gifted’s second season have been revealed as of yet, but Fox may have something in store for today’s upfront presentation.

The Gifted Issues Casting Call for New Mutants, with an Interesting Caveat

As production for Season 2 of The Gifted ramps up, the X-Men-related TV series has put out a casting call for Atlanta-based extras to play new mutants in the upcoming season, with an emphasis on, “Bald is also a plus.”

While the caveat about male extras being bald for an X-Men adaptation immediately invokes comparisons to mutant mainstay Professor Charles Xavier, the call for adult extras portraying new mutants of all ages leads to speculation that the extras will be playing imprisoned mutants, persecuted by a world that hates and fears them.

Another possibility is that the extras will portray members of the clandestine Hellfire Club, which was heavily teased in the first season of The Gifted. First created by writer Chris Claremont and artist John Byrne in 1980’s Uncanny X-Men #129, the Hellfire Club is a secret society that has covertly shaped the course of history to benefit their own nefarious agenda. While key Hellfire Club members Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost first appeared in 2011’s X-Men: First Class, it is more likely the TV incarnation of the exclusive organization will be comprised of previously unseen characters.

New Mutants: Looking for men & women who appear 20s-60s with unique & interesting looks. MUST be comfortable with prosthetics and SPFX makeup (no skin allergies or sensitivities whatsoever). Men MUST be clean shaven or willing to shave their face. Bald is also a plus! New Faces New Faces Only- Cannot have worked as a Mutant last season.

With The Gifted scheduled to return to Fox this fall moving from its Monday time slot to Tuesdays at 8 PM ET, it will be interesting to see what new elements of the X-Men mythos make it to the series as it begins filming on May 30.

Returning for Season 2 in the fall, Fox’s The Gifted stars Stephen Moyer as Reed Strucker, Amy Acker as Caitlin Strucker, Sean Teale as Eclipse/Marcos Diaz, Jamie Chung as Blink/Clarice Fong, Coby Bell as Jace Turner, Emma Dumont as Polaris/Lorna Dane, Blair Redford as Thunderbird/John Proudstar, Natalie Alyn Lind as Lauren Strucker, and Percy Hynes White as Andy Strucker.

The Gifted Season 2 Casts Empire Alum Grace Byers

Empire actress Grace Byers has been cast in season 2 of FOX's X-Men spin-off series, The Gifted. Byers' character will tie into the new storyline involving the mutant civil war brewing between the Hellfire Club and the Underground.
Grace Byers is known for her role as Anika Calhoun in the FOX musical drama series, Empire, which is set in the world of hip-hop. Byers was a series regular for four seasons.

Byers' exit from the series came in the season 4 finale, when her character was written out.

FOX has announced that Grace Byers will play the character of "Reeva" in season 2 of The Gifted. Byers' character is set to team up with Polaris (Emma Dumont), the Frost sisters (Skyler Samuels), and Andy (Percy Hynes White) in the Inner Circle. FOX describes Reeva as "a smart, charming, authoritative, elegant, beautiful woman who is ruthless in her efforts to fight for her people. She leads an elite band of followers and has a soft spot for her new recruits, but is still capable of extreme violence in defense of her vision."

It appears that Byers' character will play a pivotal role in the Inner Circle of the Hellfire Club, a prominent - yet secret - mutant organization with a rich history in the comic books. Similarly, The Gifted's Hellfire Club has a deep backstory that goes back decades, possibly even centuries. We know that the grandfather and great-aunt of Reed Strucker were key members of the Hellfire Club and well-known terrorists who called themselves "Fenris". The Hellfire Club and the Strucker twins didn't believe that mutants coexisting with humans was a realistic goal, and instead sought open conflict with humans by committing acts of terrorism.

Polaris' father, Magneto - who has never been mentioned by name in the series - was also a member of the group. In the season 1 finale, Polaris made a shocking decision to abandon the Underground and follow in her father's footsteps by siding with the Inner Circle. She was joined by Andy and a few others. It's unclear what will happen to Andy and Polaris now that they're a part of the Hellfire Club.
Judging by FOX's description of Byers' character, she will play an important role in Andy and Polaris' future. Being a person with a "soft spot for her recruits", it's possible that Byers will attempt to mentor the two mutants and help shape them into capable members of the Inner Circle. The character description may also indicate that Byers could become the season's main villain. If Reeva is willing to partake in acts of "extreme violence", she could become a deadly foe for both the Underground and human kind.

The Gifted: Skyler Samuels Teases Big Developments for the Stepford Cuckoos

When Fox’s The Gifted returns in the fall for Season 2, trouble is set to come in threes. Actress Skylar Samuels, who portrays all three Stepford Cuckoo sisters on the X-Men drama, has teased that the telepathic triplets will have a much bigger role to play in the next season.

Speaking with TVLine, Samuels revealed that the series will dive more into the individuality of the Cuckoos. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the sisters more – especially because they each have very different personalities,” the actress said. “It will be fun to see them go off on their own and develop a bit more.”

On top of of seeing more of the sisters on their own, it appears that they will be up to all sorts of no good. “We’re insane!” Samuels continued. “Like, we are crazy and capable of anything, and a little ruthless. Week to week, you never know what the Frost sisters are going to do. We have some wild things ahead.”

Samuels was brought in late in the first season of The Gifted. Although her identity as one of the Stepford sisters was kept a secret for a while, the season ended with all three triplets reuniting and demonstrating the great power they possess when assembled. A clear highlight in the freshmen season of the mutant drama, Samuels has now been added as a full-fledged series regular for Season 2.

HE GIFTED Season 2 Character Posters Feature Polaris, The Strucker Kids, Blink & More; Premiere Date Revealed

A trailer for the second season of The Gifted is expected to drop at SDCC, but in the meantime, Fox has revealed 5 new character posters and the show's premiere date to whet the appetites of anxious fans.

Many details on the upcoming second season of Fox’s X-Men series The Gifted have been kept under wraps but more info will likely come out soon, as the show is set to have a presence at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Still, fans likely have a fairly good idea of what the story will be for Season 2, as the cast of mutant and human characters will deal with the fallout of the Season 1 finale and the rift between the members of the Mutant Underground that saw characters like Polaris side with the Hellfire Club.

Fortunately, if your currently anxious to get a taste of what’s to come, you won't have to wait too long as the series will return September 25, at 8 p.m EDT. Also, the network has shared some awesome new character posters that highlight the various main characters.

To check out all of the new character posters, simply click on the View List (One Page) button below!

Polaris & Eclipse

When we last saw Emma Dumont and Sean Teale’s characters, Polaris had used her abilities to take down a plane and kill its passengers, joining the likes of the Stepford Cuckoos and leaving her significant other behind. How the couple will deal with this schism and Lorna’s pregnancy remains to be seen.
The Strucker Kids

During the first few episodes of The Gifted it seemed as if Andy and Lauren Strucker were just ordinary mutants, but as the season unfolded we quickly learned about the Strucker family history and The Fenris Twins, who like Andy and Lauren could combine their abilities to disastrous effect. That said, it may be a while before the two team up, as Andy is currently with Polaris and The Hellfire Club.
Reed & Caitlin

Despite facing a number of hardships, the heads of the Strucker family may have actually seen their relationship grow stronger, as they adapted to their new status as fugitives. However, with Andy going rogue they will likely face new challenges.
Blink & Thunderbird

After beginning the first season as a reluctant member of the Mutant Underground, Blink eventually embraced her role after tragedy struck close to home and even started a romantic relationship with Thunderbird toward the end of the season. However, whether we'll see another one of Clarice's relationships affected by the mutant hate group the Purifiers, remains to be seen.
The Stepford Cuckoos & Jace Turner

As part of a series that seemed loosely connected to the X-Men and the Brotherhood, Skyler Samuels role as The Stepford Cuckoos Esme, Sophie and Phoebe wound up be a big surprise, especially since she helped introduce the Hellfire Club and hinted at popular characters like Emma Frost and Magneto himself.
The 20th Century Fox Television/Marvel series picks up after the explosion of the Atlanta Station. The Mutant Underground search for their friends and family who left with The Inner Circle. Having tracked them outside of Washington, D.C., they must contend with new groups with extreme ideologies, both human and mutant alike, to stave off a brewing conflict.

'The Gifted' Season 2 First Photo Teases Polaris' Baby is Coming

FOX and Marvel Television have finally revealed the first look at their X-Men survival series The Gifted, returning for Season Two this fall. But there's a major change ahead for one of the main players, who just took a trip to the dark side.

Polaris ended Season One by breaking from the Mutant Underground to join the Hellfire Club, all in an effort to protect her unborn child from a world that hates and fears her kind. But even though she didn't have a baby bump in the finale, Season Two will see Polaris go into labor early on.

Take a look at the photo below:
the gifted season 2 polaris pregnant
(Photo: FOX / EW)

The reveal from Entertainment Weekly indicates The Gifted Season Two will take place six months after the events of the finale, which is why Polaris is getting ready to have her and
Eclipse's child.

"We’ve never seen in any Marvel media, and sort of show or TV, a mutant pregnancy and then a mutant delivery," said Polaris actor Emma Dumont. "This is kind of a pinnacle moment. I feel very honored to be part of Marvel history in this way. It’s super cool!"

But it doesn't look like a smooth pregnancy, as she's flanked by a worried trio of Andy Strucker, one of the Frost sisters, and newcomer Reeva Payge.

Cast members Emma Dumont (Polaris) and Percy Hynes White (Andy) return to their respective roles, with the promoted regular Skyler Samuels (the Frost sisters) and Grace Byers (Reeva) joining the series.

As a part of the leadership of the Hellfire Club called the Inner Circle, Reeva has a vested interest in seeing Polaris' survive the delivery of her child.

"They have big plans, and Polaris is a big part of those plans," said creator and showrunner Matt Nix.
1comments

Reeva is a mutant who can generate sonic blasts that scramble people's minds, so she'll definitely be a formidable foe for humans and the Mutant Underground alike. And just because her and Polaris are on the same side doesn't mean there won't be tension. Expect to see the master of magnetism butt heads with her new leaders in the upcoming episodes.

THE GIFTED: It's The Dawn Of A New Mutant Age In The Amazing Comic-Con Trailer For Season 2

FOX TV and Marvel Television has just released the official trailer for The Gifted season two and it's pretty damn incredible as the Mutant Underground face-off against Polaris, Andy, and more!

Unlike The CW shows, The Gifted season two has been filming for quite some time now, which means they had more than enough to show off to their eager fanbase during their SDCC presentation earlier today.

The acclaimed X-Men drama dropped an outstanding official trailer for the upcoming second season as the now-shattered Mutant Underground attempt to regroup and find a way to stop Polaris (Emma Dumont), Andy (Percy Hynes White), and a few other new villains that have aligned with the Hellfire Club.

THE GIFTED Season 2 Stars Jaimie Chung And Sean Teale Tease The Appearance Of Morlocks & The Purifiers

The first trailer for The Gifted Season 2 provided us with an excellent look at what's to come when the show returns in September, and now a few members of the cast further tease Morlock and The Purifiers.

Fox TV and Marvel recently released the first trailer for The Gifted Season 2, and aside from a brief moment that introduced the Morlocks, it mostly put the spotlight on the returning heroes as they deal with the threat posed by the Hellfire Club.

But unlike Season 1, which was fairly light on major players from the X-Men comics, fans will see more elements from the source material - like the Morlocks - play a significant role in the second season.

“It’s the proper mutant underground, like, they’re literally mutants that live underground,” actress Jaime Chung joked during a group interview with the cast, comparing the Morlocks to Blink's own team. “That’s a really interesting story line, but you get to see a different side, or a different society, of how mutants could live freely — but underground.”

Along with the Morlocks, actor Sean Teale also teased the return of a certain villainous group of humans, who made an appearance during a flashback scene in Season 1.

“The Purifiers are a mutant hate group," Teale explained before sarcastically saying, "I don’t know what parallels we could compare that to in mordern-day times. If only we had an idea. They’re tiki torch-carrying mutant haters.”

Teale then took a moment to explain that the major status quo change at the end of Season 1, which saw our heroes go on the run, is what allows the show to explore more "subsets of the mutant world" outside of the Mutant Underground and the Hellfire Club.

In all, the inclusion of more significant characters from the comics will likely excite fans who want more than just references to groups like the X-Men and the Brotherhood.

The Gifted: Reed Will Develop Super Powers In Season 2

The protagonist of The Gifted, Reed Strucker (Stephen Moyer), will gain a mutant ability when the show returns for season 2. Reed and his wife, Caitlin, spent season 1 trying to protect their mutant children, while also being the Mutant Underground's only human allies. Now Reed too will know what it feels like to be a mutant.

After learning of his father's research into mutant DNA, Reed discovered that his children's powers ran in the family. They were connected to the von Strucker twins, two powerful characters from the comic books. In the show, the Strucker twins are notorious killers who combine their powers for destructive purposes. Apparently, Reed was a mutant too, until his father found a way to suppress his X-gene, which kept him from developing powers.

In an interview with TV Guide, Stephen Moyer and showrunner Matt Nix reveal that Reed will finally have powers of his own in season 2. Moyer says that Reed's journey of discovering his abilities will begin when he decides to investigate his past and his father's notes. Moyer says the powers are "in the family" but doesn't reveal the specifics, or if they have any connection to the powers of the original Strucker twins. Nix explains that Reed's long-suppressed abilities can be "very, very bad news."

So when they come along, it's a rough ride. It's a very, very rough ride. It's not like he's suddenly a super hero. And one of the things we think about a lot is how are these powers hooked into someone's emotional life, and Reed's a pretty repressed guy. So powers showing up for Reed is not good news. It's very, very bad news.

Both in the comics and in the movies, situations where mutants access their powers for the first time have a history of ending badly. Often, these events lead to tragedy. It all depends on the nature of the power. Andy, for example, unintentionally wrecked his school after being bullied. Reed could cause a similar - if not worse - catastrophe with his abilities.

Fans caught a glimpse of Reed's new discovery in a recent promo for season 2, where he's seen looking down at the veins in his hand which seem to be pulsating with red energy. It's unclear what will cause Reed's powers to manifest after all this time.

Reed's metamorphosis could have an effect on his role in the Mutant Underground. Some of the mutants were unwilling to trust him at first, but his new powers will make him one of them. If he becomes as powerful as his children or his grandparents, Reed could prove to be instrumental in the fight against the Hellfire Club.

THE GIFTED Star Jamie Chung Says We'll Learn More About Thunderbird's Past In Season 2

We learned that the X-Men chose Blair Redford's Thunderbird to lead the Mutant Underground in Season 1, and viewers will soon learn more about the mutant leader's past in the second season of The Gifted.

When the first season of The Gifted began, most of the members of the Mutant Underground had already been active for a long time. As a result, the series didn't need to spend much time exploring our heroes' backstories.

However, in a recent interview, star Jamie Chung revealed that, along with seeing the progression of Blink and Thunderbird's relationship, viewers will learn more about James Proudstar's (Blair Redford) mysterious past in Season 2.

"[You'll get] real insight to something really quiet and intimate about them [Thunderbird and Blink]," Chung explained. "In Episode 3, lots of things are revealed about his past."

It's not clear what we'll learn about the Underground's fearless leader, but the show's freshman season has already revealed that the X-Men put him in charge of the Underground. So, it'd be nice if we learned more about why the Marvel heroes disappeared.

What do you folks think? Are you excited to see more of Thunderbird's past when The Gifted returns? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

'The Gifted' Season 2 Key Art Teases Mutant Civil War

The Dawn of the Mutant Age is nearly upon us and it looks like it will start with a struggle. ComicBook.com can exclusively reveal FOX’s official key art for The Gifted Season Two.
The artwork hints at the coming struggle in the mutant community as new factions have formed. One one side is the Mutant Underground, still working towards the X-Men’s dream of peaceful co-existence. On the other is the Hellfire Club, ready to fight for mutants by any means necessary.

Take a look below:

On the Mutant Underground’s side is Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind), Reed (Stephen Moyer), and Caitlin Strucker (Amy Acker), Thunderbird (Blair Redford), Blink (Jamie Chung), and Eclipse (Sean Teale).

On the Hellfire Club’s side is Polaris (Emma Dumont), Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White), the Frost Sisters (Skyler Samuels), and Reeva Payge (Grace Byers). Reeva is a newcomer, a mutant with powerful sonic blasts that scramble the minds of others. She also has a mysterious history with the Hellfire Club and will help guide those mutants who defected in The Gifted’s Season One finale.
In that finale, Polaris took drastic measures to stop Dr. Roderick Campbell’s attempts to take his mutant-hunting Hound program national, destroying the airplane carrying Campbell. The action led to her defection from the Mutant Underground and to her allying herself with the Frost sisters and their Hellfire Club. Polaris brought several members of the Mutant Underground with her, including Andy Strucker.

The new season will open six months after the previous season’s finale, with Polaris about to give birth to her and Eclipse’s child.
The Mutant Underground and the Hellfire Club won’t be the only factions in play in The GiftedSeason Two. The new season will also introduce the Morlocks, a group of mutants who live their entire lives underground. There will also be the new threat of the Purifiers, a fanatical religious terrorist group that views mutants as the spawn of the devil.

Are you excited for the return of The Gifted? Let us know what you think in the comments!

'The Gifted' Season 2 Premiere Photos Released

The fight for mutant rights is nearly ready to resume. FOX has released new photos from the Season Two premiere episode of The Gifted.
The episode is titled “eMergence” and begins six months after the first season’s finale, with the mutant community more divided than ever and Polaris about to give birth.

Take a look at the photos below:

In The Gifted Season One finale, Polaris took drastic measures to stop Dr.

Following the finale, showrunner Matt Nix spoke to ComicBook.com about what that rift in the Mutant Underground means for the future.
“And then, going in to take two, I like the idea of that there are all sorts of ways of dealing with this new circumstance that everybody finds themselves in, and not everybody's going to agree, and not everybody's going to choose one of the sides that we've defined on the show," Nix explained. "Exploring those other sides too. I think it's going to be very interesting. There are going to be common enemies, people who are more aligned with one side than other. There are going to be people who are completely selfish in their motives. All of those things are going to come out in Season Two, where the situation for mutants has got considerably more complicated.”

In The Gifted Season Two, “The 20th Century Fox Television/Marvel series picks up after the explosion of the Atlanta Station. The Mutant Underground search for their friends and family who left with The Inner Circle. Having tracked them outside of Washington, D.C., they must contend with new groups with extreme ideologies, both human and mutant alike, to stave off a brewing conflict.”

The Mutant Underground and the Inner Circle aren’t the only factions in the new season of The Gifted. As previously announced, the new season will also introduce the Morlocks and the Mutant Underground trailer may have revealed our first look.

The frame below shows a mutant appearing out of a fog in what appears to be a sewer. In the comics, the Morlocks usually make their homes in the sewer tunnels beneath a city. Take a look below.
At San Diego Comic-Con, The Gifted star Jamie Chung hinted that her character, Polaris, will be one of the first to make contact with the Morlocks.

“Her love life is the only stable thing in her life,” Chung explained, referring to Blink’s romantic relationship with Mutant Underground leader John “Thunderbird” Proudstar. “They’re still doing their missions. There are still mutants in need of help. She’s found her place, with the Morlocks, and she’s found her group that she’s fascinated by.”
It should be interesting to see how the Mutant Underground relates to a group of mutants who literally live underground.
The Morlocks were created by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith during Claremont’s 17-year long, franchise-defining run on the X-Men comics. The Morlocks are made up mostly of mutants whose mutations have altered them in such a way that they cannot pass for human in the surface world’s society, and so they have formed their own community underground.

The Gifted has already borrowed a few Morlock characters. Shatter, Trader, and Dreamer from the show’s first season were all taken from the 2002 Morlocks miniseries by Geoff Johns and Shawn Martinbrough.
Are you excited to see the Morlocks in The Gifted? What other Marvel mutant characters would you like to see show up on the X-Men television series? Let us know in the comments!
