Default John Wick

Go see this.

This was a rather good movie. Even my wife liked it and that's saying a lot.

There are several lessons in it (spoiler alert)

1. Don't mess with a man's car.

2. Don't mess with a man's dog.

3. It is a testament to future hollywood stuntmen on how to die like a bitch.

‘John Wick’ Sequel Is “In Development”

John Wick is thinking he’s back, again. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch have revealed that they’re in development on a sequel to the 2014 Keanu Reeves thriller, although details are scarce at the moment. After the jump, read their comments on a John Wick sequel.
Stahelski and Leitch spilled the beans to Movies.com. “We’re in development right now,” confirmed Stahelski. Not coincidentally, the news comes just as John Wick hits home video.
“In development” is a vague phrase that could mean anything from “we’re having serious conversations with the studio” to “we got drunk and joked about it once.” In this case, though, it’s clear Stahelski and Leitch have given it some serious thought.
John Wick was one of the pleasant surprises of 2014, a stylish and relentlessly entertaining thriller that made perfect use of Reeves. Critics and audiences alike took note, spurring the $20 million movie to gross $78 million worldwide. While a sequel isn’t inevitable, it seems quite likely.

For Stahelski and Leitch, however, the challenge of a John Wick 2 isn’t going bigger and better, but staying true to the character. Explained Stahelski:
We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It’s the matter of story and how much you like the character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome.
So instead of pushing John Wick to ever-more-ridiculous extremes, they’re trying to keep him somewhat grounded. “You gotta go on a journey with the guy and have to like the guy,” said Leitch.
Speaking of “the guy,” it’s unclear whether Reeves plans to return. Stahelski and Leitch certainly seem to hope he will. “If we could work with Keanu Reeves for ten movies you’d have a really cool career,” said Stahelski.
John Wick got a lot of attention for its inventive action sequences, but it’s great to hear Stahelski and Leitch understand there’s so much more to the film’s appeal than shoot-outs and fistfights. Now let’s just hope they can find a way to spur John Wick back into action without killing off another adorable puppy.

John Wick 2 With Keanu Reeves Officially Announced

Lionsgate has officially confirmed plans for John Wick 2, a sequel to the 2014 film which starred Keanu Reeves, directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad, all of whom will return for the sequel.
John Wick stars Reeves as the titular hitman, looking for revenge and redemption.
“With such tremendous fan and critical support for ‘John Wick,’ we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell,” said Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions in a press release. “We are thrilled that Keanu, David and Chad have re-teamed with us and promise to bring audiences even more excitement the second time around.”

I thought it could have been great but I got bored with the obvious attempts at lengthening the movie. It was the biggest failing, the idea that these master hitmen would just fuck up in the most obvious ways so the person you should have killed the first time around keep popping back up to fuck things up. Its easy, just give him more people to kill instead. Everything after the bath house was not necessary.

Still has nothing on the original Taken with respect to modern gun-wanks.

I disagree. Taken was a great movie, but it's one dimensional. The character doesn't develop at all throughout the story. The military background is predictable, and obvious in the tactics.

Wick is a very evolutionary character, who goes through a whole world of emotions with each scene. The fights are dynamic, and he adapts to each scenario.

The judo incorporated into the movement is just beautiful.

Taken wasnt mean to evolve (although there was the slight change from the aloof douchebag dad to realizing he might have been a shitty one). As for emotion, well, Keanu doesnt do emotions. So it was all a bit forced.

Both are nothing more than gun wanks, there really isnt any plot to either.

But I think it could have been much better if they just didnt the arbitrary bullshit to lengthen the movie. The first half was very tight and clean, the second half just didnt need to happen. Also exploring the hotel would have been awesome, that was the coolest concept of the entire move (the sub-culture basically living openly in NY).

The fight scenes were great though, the choreography specifically.

John Wick 2 Filming Begins This Fall!

Keanu Reeves is back as John Wick 2 filming is set to begin this fall!

John Wick 2 filming will begin this fall, Thunder Road today confirmed as part of the announcement of their upcoming Outlaws Inc. film. A sequel to 2014’s critically-acclaimed revenge thriller, John Wick 2 will featureKeanu Reeves reprising the title role along with directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski and screenwriter Derek Kolstad. John Wick 2 will be released through Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment and will be produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk, who also produced the first film.
“With such tremendous fan and critical support for ‘John Wick,’ we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell,” Lionsgate’s President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions said earlier this year. “We are thrilled that Keanu, David and Chad have re-teamed with us and promise to bring audiences even more excitement the second time around.”
Produced on a modest $20 million budget, John Wick earned more than $78 million at the worldwide box office and also became a hit in the home video market.
“In the follow up to last year’s adrenaline-fueled revenge and redemption thriller,” reads the sequel’s temporarily minimal plot synopsis, “legendary hit man John Wick is back.”
Jason Constantine and Eda Kowan at Lionsgate will oversee John Wick 2 on behalf of Lionsgate.
Last year, ComingSoon.net had the opportunity to visit the directing pair of Leitch and Stahelski at their 87Eleven Action Design studio. Click on the link to check out our full report, which includes a choreographed John Wick stunt video!

It's getting a sequel due to the popularity/earnings of the 1st one, low budget big box office gains (also a unique story) helped

JOHN WICK Co-Director Chad Stahelski Will Be Back To Helm JOHN WICK 2 On His Own

Did you enjoy John Wick last year? Then you'll probably be interested by this news. According to Collider, Lionsgate have brought back the film's co-director Chad Stahelski to helm John Wick 2 - by himself. So what happened to David Leitch? Hit the jump for more details...

Last year's John Wick was one of the best action movies in recent memory. Defying all expectations, the Keanu Reeves starrer was met with near universal acclaim from audiences and critics alike, and certainly looks like a cult-favorite in the making. It also had a decent run at the box office - managing to do enough business to justify a sequel in Lionsgate's eyes.

The film not only helped relaunch Keanu Reeves' career, but also put former stuntmen Chad Stahelski & David Leitch on the map as directors to watch. Now, Collider claim the former is set to return for John Wick 2 - news that will no doubt relieve fans of the first movie. Back in April, both directors were rumored to have been eyed by Warner Bros for an upcoming DCEU film.

While that never panned out, Collider revealed that the pair have been offered "a number of other projects" recently - so perhaps the rumors were true. The site didn't confirm why Leitch isn't returning too (he'll only be back as an EP), but hinted that he has something else lined up...

What do you think of this news? Are you happy to see Stahelski back for the sequel, or would you rather see both directors return together? And what CBM would you like to have seen them tackle? As always, be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below!

John Wick 2: Keanu Reeves Offers Story Details

In a matter of weeks the sequel to the best action movie of 2014 begins filming. Keanu Reeves returns as the titular master assassin (and dog lover) in John Wick 2 and Chad Stahelski returns to direct alongside producing partner David Leitch.
When the first film came out, we believed it was the perfect new IP to launch a multimedia franchise and it’s quickly becoming a reality. From a video game appearance to a quickly greenlit sequel, John Wick’s work isn’t done yet despite the rather unique and singular premise of the original movie. What sort of story would be fitting for a followup?

Speaking with Collider while promoting his upcoming feature Knock Knock (stay tuned for our interviews this week!), Reeves offered the following details on John Wick 2:
“I think we have a really good premise, and it’s an organic premise. It’s basically — to me there’s John Wick and then there’s John. You know, John is the married guy whose wife just died, and that five years of his life. Then there’s John Wick, who’s the mythical assassin. In this, John Wick’s past comes and infiltrates John’s life and John Wick, in a way, has to fight for John.”
“‘Why tell the story? Why do we need to do this again? How do we do that without doing another dog?’ So we speak about John Wick, the next chapter, and what is that emotional hook? What is that? So I think we have a good idea of that.”
Reeves continues, promising that director Chad Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad paid close attention to feedback of the original to discover what worked well to build from. John Wick 2 will explore much more of the assassin’s world, the Hotel Continental world, and they’ll be evolving the epic action set pieces too.
“We’re gonna do the same kind of thing in the sense of — what are the guiding principles? So it’s longer takes, know where you are on the space, who’s doing what, action with consequence. And then going to other levels of what the gun-Fu was, which was Jujitsu and Judo mixed with weapons and different styles of weapon training. So we’ve been opening up, I’ve been learning some other tools and different styles of that, and trying to develop some more techniques in terms of Judo and Jujitsu and bring those elements into the work. And then we have some other things that might be a little different… But it’s all organic. It’s not like all of a sudden John Wick has superpowers. It’s got to be connected to the character.”
Could John Wick sustain an ongoing film franchise? Obviously it depends on the financial success of the followup but the challenge, as Reeves also points out later in the interview is in finding a “reason” for John Wick to be back in the thick of it, and for there to exist another chapter of the story worthy of a full-length feature film. “I don’t know, until you do it and it’s done, you don’t know, because it’s not source material, this is original goodness.”
John Wick goes Clubbing

They’ve cracked the story on what John Wick 2 will be but Reeves is on point in emphasizing the difficulty in matching up to the original movie in terms of delivering a character who audiences can emotionally attach to. A wife passing away and then a dog being brutalized are easy motivators for revenge, but how do you pick up from that once “justice” is served? And how do you do that a third time or a fourth?
We don’t know what’s in store for the main plot of John Wick 2. However, despite the character adopting another pup at the end of the first movie, it seems the character will be pulled into the action for different reasons this time.

Keanu Reeves Teases JOHN WICK 2 Plot Details; Says 'John Wick' Has To Fight For 'John'

"Yeah, I'm thinking I'm back!" - After winning over both fans and critics alike, Lionsgate finally greenlit a sequel to 2014's John Wick. In a recent interview, star Keanu Reeves shared more than a few details on the upcoming action sequel. Come check it out!

"People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer, but yeah, I'm thinking I'm back."

In a recent interview with Collider, star Keanu Reeves sat down to discuss his upcoming John Wick sequel and tease a few details on which direction the new tale may take the titular hero. The original film saw a retired John Wick return to a life he had left behind for a family, so where does this next installment find our hero? Well, according to Reeves, we'll find the legendary assassin in a battle for his own soul. Read his comments below:
“I think we have a really good premise, and it’s an organic premise. It’s basically — to me there’s John Wick and then there’s John. You know, John is the married guy whose wife just died, and that five years of his life. Then there’s John Wick, who’s the mythical assassin. In this, John Wick’s past comes and infiltrates John’s life and John Wick, in a way, has to fight for John.”
Sounds interesting enough, but it's easy to wonder, how exactly do the writers plan on continuing the story without repeating the plot points of the original film? And will Wick's beloved dog once again play an integral part to the film's story?
“‘Why tell the story? Why do we need to do this again? How do we do that without doing another dog?’ So we speak about John Wick, the next chapter, and what is that emotional hook? What is that? So I think we have a good idea of that."
Additionally, it sounds like if you were a big fan of the Hotel Continental subplot and the whole underworld of assassins, you'll be rewarded when the next installment hits theaters as, according to Reeves, director Chad Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad are both working extra hard to open that whole world up:
“Chad and the writer, Derek Kolstad, they’ve really listened to what people have enjoyed about the work and how they speak about it. So there’s definitely that influence of the other world, the Continental world, the look, the feel, what it is about the movie, what made people like it; is definitely being paid attention to and the world opens up in this chapter.”
The Knock Knock star and former star of films such as Speed, The Matrix, The Replacements, Point Break, The Lake House, Constantine, and many more, also added that the John Wick sequel should kick off production sometime near the end of October and also revealed that he's already been training for a few months to prepare for the extremely demanding action role. He even went ahead and teased how Wick's fighting style will continue to evolve:
“We’re gonna do the same kind of thing in the sense of — what are the guiding principles? So it’s longer takes, know where you are on the space, who’s doing what, action with consequence. And then going to other levels of what the gun-Fu was, which was Jujitsu and Judo mixed with weapons and different styles of weapon training. So we’ve been opening up, I’ve been learning some other tools and different styles of that, and trying to develop some more techniques in terms of Judo and Jujitsu and bring those elements into the work. And then we have some other things that might be a little different…But it’s all organic. It’s not like all of a sudden John Wick has superpowers, it’s got to be connected to the character.”
As for franchise potential, Reeves sounded a bit uncertain about whether or not there might be any further John Wick sequels past the second one as he says since it's an original creation, it would take a really good reason for him and the writers to want to return again for a potential third or fourth installment.
“I’m interested in what happens to the guy and in this world. So when we were speaking about it, obviously it did well enough for the investors to want to do another one, which is cool, and it’s great to have the opportunity to further the story. But we had to come up with a reason why, and we came up with a reason that was good enough, that didn’t suck, and we’re just trying to make it better and better. In terms of a franchise, I don’t know, until you do it and it’s done, you don’t know, because it’s not source material, this is original goodness.”

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that Ian McShane (Game Of Thrones) will reprise his role from this original film. In case you need a refresher, he portrayed Winston, the owner of the boutique hotel that housed Wick and caters to the hit-person community with its discretion, on-call doctors, and no-killing rule.

John Wick 2’ Will Be a ‘Matrix’ Mini-Reunion

John Wick 2‘s got a pretty solid cast. Keanu Reeves returns from the first movie, of course, along with Bridget Moynahan, John Leguizamo, and Ian McShane, and Common, Ruby Rose, and Peter Stormare are joining the fray this time as well. And now, as if you needed yet another reason to get excited about the action sequel, it turns out John Wick 2 is also going to be a Matrix mini-reunion.

Hit the jump to learn more about the John Wick 2 Matrix connection. Though we’d warn you of potential spoilers if you’d rather be surprised by what looks like a fun little cameo.

Gothamist recently spotted Reeves around the Brooklyn set of John Wick 2 with… drumroll please… Laurence Fishburne, his co-star from the Matrix trilogy.
Fishburne’s involvement in John Wick 2 hasn’t publicly been announced, so this might just be a brief cameo. Of course, this isn’t the first link between John Wick and The Matrix. John Wick 2 director Chad Stahelski was Reeves’ stunt double on the first Matrix, and served as a stunt coordinator on the sequels. David Leitch, who co-directed the first John Wick and is helping produce the sequel, also did stunt work on The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

We can only guess at what role Fishburne has in John Wick 2, since specific plot details are being kept under wraps. We’ve heard Common is playing a villain who works for a female crime lord, and that the story won’t kill off another adorable puppy. Beyond that, Reeves has also spoken in vague terms about the film’s overarching themes.
I think we have a really good premise, and it’s an organic premise. It’s basically — to me there’s John Wick and then there’s John. You know, John is the married guy whose wife just died, and that five years of his life. Then there’s John Wick, who’s the mythical assassin. In this, John Wick’s past comes and infiltrates John’s life and John Wick, in a way, has to fight for John.
John Wick 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but we can probably expect it in theaters sometime next year.

Keanu Reeves Describes New John Wick 2 Characters, Calls It A Third Degree Black Belt Movie

John Wick was one of the most acclaimed films of 2014 and one which cemented Keanu Reeves right back on Hollywood's map as an action hero.
The Matrix alum is on his way to turning the John Wick character into a franchise and it sounds like the inbound sequel will be cranking up the action big time, however, when it came to making a sequel, Reeves didn't want to jump in haphazardly. He and the team needed to be sure there was enough reason within the character and story to make a satisfying film which could live up to the original.
“For us it was just what is the next chapter? What is the continuation of this story?" Reeves explains. "Opening up the world – the underground world. The world behind the world in terms of the assassins. Kind of evolving the action – if the first one was a black belt, then this one is third degree black belt. It’s such a fun project and a great character.”
Reeves is joined by fellow Matrix alumni, Laurence Fishburne for John Wick: Chapter Two. The reunion might get ugly, though, seeing as Reeves' description of the new character sounds like a possible new foe.
“Laurence has this fantastic role as a character in the Underworld called The Bowery King” Reeves says. “He plays such a great character in the piece and he brings of course humour, intelligence, charisma and fascination – he’s such an incredible actor and it was a pleasure to work with him again."
"Stormare has more of a cameo in it but again he brings such fun and mystery and this mixture of groundedness and the surreal," Reeves says of the other franchise newcomer Peter Stormare. Stormare's character tend to die in just about every role he plays, ranging from Bad Boys II to The Blacklist (spoiler alert) so it's possible he drops in for a little while and gets killed off. That said, Stormare is a very talented actor, so it would be fun to see the cameo be a set up for a potential third installment.

Laurence Fishburne's Character Will Help Expand John Wick 2

John Wick was one of the most enjoyable action movies of 2014. Not just because it was slickly put together by first time directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, but because it was a welcome return to the genre for Keanu Reeves. It also fared rather well at the box office, bringing in $80 million from just a $20 million budget, which meant that a sequel was soon greenlit. Laurence Fishburne is one of the new names that has been brought on board for John Wick: Chapter 2, and the always dependable actor has been discussing how his character will help the sequel to evolve and expand the world.

Laurence Fishburne made this explanation while speaking to Collider about his upcoming turn in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Obviously the conversation soon turned away from Perry White to John Wick: Chapter 2, which is what led Laurence Fishburne to say of his character in the sequel:
I’m not part of the Continental world, no, but I’m a part of another world that exists inside the world of John Wick. That wasn’t something that was clear in the first movie. It’s like a part of his world that exists but you wouldn’t know about it, and it won’t really be revealed until the second movie
The Continental world that Laurence Fishburne is referring to is the name of the hotel that John Wick seeks refuge in during his bout with Michael Nyvqvist’s Viggo Tarasov. This is a hotel that exclusively caters to assassins and criminals, however, killing is completely outlawed on the premises. Ian McShane will once again play the hotel's owner in the sequel.

But Laurence Fishburne’s comments suggest that John Wick: Chapter 2 will explore an entirely different world to the original, which should then see a whole new cast of assassins and devious individuals causing mayhem. So far Common, Peter Stormare, Riccardo Scamarcio, and Ruby Rose have joined Laurence Fisburne as the newest additions to the franchise.

However, it is the tantalising prospect of the old Matrix pals Laurence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves reuniting that really makes John Wick: Chapter 2 so appealing. Fishburne played Morpheus to Keanu Reeves’ Neo in the hugely popular trilogy, which not only helped to redefine the sci-fi action genre, but over the course of three films the franchise grossed more than $1.6 billion.

From the sound of things, Laurence Fishburne’s John Wick: Chapter 2 part might not be huge, as he admitted that he coerced his old friend Keanu to get him a part. But since both The Matrix and John Wick were similar in their meticulously choreographed action sequences, we can only hope that we’ll get even the briefest of glimpses of Laurence Fishburne and Keanu Reeves going toe-to-toe with wave after wave of bad guys, again. We’ll find out if that’s the case when John Wick: Chapter 2 is finally released on February 10, 2017.
