Default Republicans trying to fuck up your internet again

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...ity-authority/

First they make sure the ISPs are able to do what they wish with your browsing data, now this: Bye bye net neutrality.

Apparently, giving the ISPs who are all effectively monopolies in most markets the ability to throttle your connection based on what site you are visiting, and even potentially charging you more to gain better access to certain cites is "restoring freedom to the internet."

Give me a break.

This has been swept under the rug for so long. Glad to see it is picking up traction in the news again.

We are at a critical point in regards to the fight for net neutrality. I don't know how anybody can argue against the "Obama laws-" they benefit all of us!

If you really want to take the word of ISPs who in most markets have complete monopolies, think about how many of them have rolled out egregious "data caps" in the past year - many Cox customers in Omaha are paying arbitrary "overage fees" while using the same data they have for years on end. Why is it suddenly "costing them more money?" (Hint: it's not- they just found a way to make free money with these fees).

Are companies that are willing to just throw customers under the bus like this really going to keep their "word" about not restricting access to different parts of the internet once the only law stopping them from doing so goes away?

Not to mention, this will further make it harder or impossible for municipalities to incorporate their own broadband networks for their citizens.

It's 2017. It's time for the internet to be treated like the utility that it is. Electricity could still be called a "luxury" by the way some people use it for personal needs and not strictly survival, but I doubt any of you want your electricity provided by private monopolies...

Are you arguing that is a good thing? Because I don't think that is a good thing. We have a chance to prevent that from happening to the internet; it's worth a couple minutes of time to call your congressman about it

Please post a picture of your Econ degree.

They are heavily regulated.

They are still monopolies.

It needs to remain neutral. It’s just as bad as an electric utility charging you different rates for the type of electrical devices you use, and blocking use for others. Like, charging you more money if you want to use an A/C, but only allowing it to be used between 12 and 6. Fuck all that.

No shit, that's exactly what I've been saying.
This act pretty much sheds all regulation for ISPs, allowing them to meter traffic and do many other fucked up things as much as they'd like. Literally the only people fighting for this are lobbyists and the biggest half dozen ISPs in the country, basically every other person and company understands how fucked that is.

So once again, would you prefer it if your utility company was allowed to function unregulated and charge you whatever rates they wanted?
