When I was younger and didn't understand the importance of having the right set of tires on your vehicle for the conditions, I had several spin outs. Let me tell you about them.

1985 oldsmobile toronado. FWD. got on the highway, no idea what caused it but the rear started fish tailing. I ended up doing a 180 and was facing the other direction.

1986 VW Jetta. FWD. Coming down the on ramp from 435 WB to I-35 SB. Took it a hair too fast for the conditions. Hit a road imperfection. Multiple 360 spins and went into the ditch.

2005 STI. AWD. Coming down an off ramp on my summer tires with fresh snow, tapped the brakes, instantly lost traction and the nose slowed more than the rear. Went 90 degrees sideways down the offramp. Proceeded to shit myself while I stared at the guard rail.

2007 CX-7. AWD. Rocking the stock tires in snow, getting onto the highway the right side of the car hit thicker patch of snow than the left. Right side had more resistance so it slowed down compared to the left side, Proceeded to fishtail across 2 lanes. Thankfully no one was in those lanes.

Any of the RWD cars I've owned with proper tires? No problems. ever.

Experience and tires are what keep you safe in the snow. Not FWD. Not AWD.
You're a horrible driver, Greg.

But that's just my 2 cents.
Take a FWD car, put a front wheel into a ridge of snow between lanes, like that SUV did, and let off the gas like 99.9% of drivers would do. Take video while you're at it, and we'll all take dramamine so we don't get sick watching how many times you spin.

I watched a soccer mom do the exact same thing in her AWD explorer right in front of me coming down an on ramp last year but she only had a guardrail to smash into. She was trying to merge into traffic and the plows had left a ridge of loose snow and that packed slick stuff underneath. I try to keep my distance from other drivers, especially trucks and SUV's because people have a false sense of security.

I've driven all different drivetrains in the snow. FWD, AWD, 4WD, and RWD. all of them have a weakness in certain weather conditions and it's up to the drive to recognize how they will act depending. My current car will switch ends at any speed in the snow if I'm not careful with the throttle.
I still find myself feeling safer in a FWD car with studded snow tires then any RWD I have ever driven. I would gladly take fwd+tires over an AWD with all seasons as well.

And to be honest, people who think trucks / suv for the snow.... fuck that seriously, I feel scared as fuck driving any RWD truck/suv in bad weather, they just feel wobbly, to high of a center of gravity, tires are to big and want to float ect. Give me a lil FWD or AWD car any day.

It also cracks me up how many people come in and look at a used ford explorer or blazer we have for sale that is 4X4 and say oh yeah this will be great in snow.... Yeah cause you are gonna drop it into 4X4 right before you start to slide huh??? Then they drive in 4x4 on the highway and blow up the transfer case. O o

What I put on the wifeys car this winter... to bad we have had like 0 fucking snow lol.

Thats a crossfox.

I dont believe it has the same safety standards of a smartcar, but am not 100 percent.

-edit not saying the outcome would be any different, i just remember seeing those pics a long time ago and people were argueing about that lol.

I know it's not a smart car but they are about the same size, and I bet the results wouldn't be much different.
