Default BMW M8 Gran Coupe

BMW’s Panamera Is Here: 8-Series Gran Coupe Makes Its Spy Debut

These are the first spy shots of the upcoming 8-Series Gran Coupe, which is a longer, four-door version of the recently launched Coupe.

The new member of the expanding 8-Series family was previewed by τηε M8 Gran Coupe concept at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. As the test car shows, the four-door 8-Series does a pretty good job at retaining the dynamic lines of the Coupe, only now it’s noticeably longer to make room for those extra rear doors.

This will enable BMW to go after other big sporty executive models like the Porsche Panamera and the Mercedes AMG GT4 Coupe, while those looking for al fresco motoring will have to wait for the Convertible.

The 8-Series Gran Coupe will pack BMW’s latest tech features, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a 10.25-inch display for the infotainment system, active anti-roll bars and a rather long list of driver assistance systems.

Don’t expect any surprises in the engine department; the 8-Series Gran Coupe will share the same powertrains with the Coupe, including the new twin-turbo 523hp 4.4-liter V8 and a 3.0-liter 315hp diesel straight-six, the latter available only to European customers.

As for the range-topping M8 Gran Coupe, we expect BMW to use the same oily bits with the current M5, meaning a twin-turbo 600hp V8 pared to a configurable all-wheel drive system. Some reports suggest that the M Division will increase the horsepower figure for the M8 a little, just to give its flagship M model the edge, but that remains to be seen.

BMW is expected to reveal the production version of the 8-Series Gran Coupe in 2019 as a 2020MY.

BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will be roomier, swankier than old 6 GC

Take coupe, add doors, voila!

The new 2019 BMW 8 Series is the replacement for the old 6 Series and is a new range-topping halo vehicle for BMW that allows for higher prices and greater swankiness. Yet, to this point, we have only seen the new 8 Series Coupe, and specifically, the inelegantly named M850i xDrive. To the surprise of precisely no one, BMW won't be stopping with the plain-old, two-door, hardtop coupe.

Nope, as these spy photos confirm, there's a BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. Per BMW naming tradition, "Gran" indicates four doors and "Coupe" therefore means nothing at all. It would replace the 6 Series Gran Coupe, and also theoretically serve alongside the M760i as a range-topping BMW four-door. (BMW also totally teased its existence months ago.)

Judging by the large air intakes up front and the parallelogram exhaust outlets, we're guessing this particular car is a BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe. What appears to be Estoril Blue paint, or some other vibrant M color, would be circumstantial evidence. One of the only differences we can spot is the Gran Coupe's small rear diffuser. Blowing up one of the profile images reveals a tiny glimpse of the interior, which appears to share the non-gran coupe's design. Note the screen rising from a center stack angled toward the driver. Again, not surprising.

One more important observation is the roofline. Compared to the 6 Series Gran Coupe, the 8's roof extends farther back and therefore remains higher over the rear passenger compartment. The back door window is also clearly bigger. This should mean a welcome increase in back seat headroom, which was always an issue in the four-door 6. In other words, it'll be even more like a sedan than a coupe, which in this particular way, is no bad thing.

Given how close-to-production this test vehicle looks, we're guessing we'll be seeing the camo pealed off for an official review very soon.

Update
Our spies have spotted another BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe, this time at the Nurburgring during some high-speed testing. Shooting the prototype under AMG GT4’s billboard was simply a bonus.

The test car is the M850i xDrive version, meaning it’s fitted with the new twin-turbo 523hp 4.4-liter V8 engine. This version will serve as the range-topper, up until BMW decides to pull the wraps off the much anticipated M8.
BMW is keen on making the range-topping M8 feel noticeably sharper than the rest of the lineup, as it will be not only a halo car for the entire BMW range but also the flagship of the company’s M Division. The German car maker has developed the M8 alongside the regular 8-Series.

The Gran Coupe version is expected to offer both a strict four-seat layout and a more traditional five-seat setup inside its cabin. The extended wheelbase looks long enough to accommodate passengers in comfort at the back but whether the sloping roofline leaves enough room for their heads remains to be seen.

BMW M850i Gran Coupe Hits The ‘Ring Just One More Time

With the unveiling of the 8-Series Gran Coupe, BMW will once again have a rival for the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera.

The exact reveal date is unknown, but given the pace at which prototypes have been spied testing recently, we guess we’re not that far away from its official launch.
Until then, we can feast our eyes on the prototypes that are testing at the Nurburgring.
Also Watch: BMW 8-Series Driven: Just A Modern, Fast GT Or A Sports Car As Well?
This is the 850i xDrive Gran Coupe, and its name tells us what to expect: all-wheel drive and a twin-turbo 4.4-liter eight-cylinder engine, making 530 PS (523 hp / 390 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque.
In its Coupe and Convertible siblings, the 850i xDrive hits the 100 km/h (62 mph) mark in 3.7 seconds (3.8 for the Convertible). Nonetheless, with the added weight that comes from the elongated wheelbase, it would make sense if the Gran Coupe would be a tad slower.
The M8 Gran Coupe, which will follow, will be offered as a more premium alternative to the latest M5. It will use the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 as the executive sedan, where it delivers as much as 625 PS (617 hp / 460 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque in the Competition version.

BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe spied testing almost undisguised

Here's the long, long M850i Gran Coupe with four doors

BMW's upcoming Porsche Panamera rival, the 8 Series Gran Coupe, has been spied largely undisguised in Munich. The front of the fastback four-door has no camo at all — just black tape over the BMW badge, as if that would fool anyone. Last time the Gran Coupe was spotted was in August, when the nose of the car was still covered.

The immediately obvious thing about the Gran Coupe is just how long it is. The regular two-door 8 Series is already nearly 16 feet long, and the four-door version can surpass 16.5 feet, weighing two tons. The rear doors seem long enough to make ingress and egress somewhat graceful — which is not always easy in a "four-door coupe" due to the rakish roofline.

The car seen here is likely an M850i with a more aggressive front bumper, blue brake calipers and rectangular exhausts. The M850i, with its V8 making 530 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque, isn't going to be the sole M offering, as there will likely be a 400-horsepower M850d quad-turbodiesel six-cylinder model for select markets. Both cars are expected to have all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering.

Underneath those top models will be an 840i with the same three-liter unit as the current 5 Series, and a 840d with a 320-horsepower twin-turbo diesel. Don't expect that one in the U.S. market.

Along with the aforementioned Panamera, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is also aimed at buyers of four-door AMG GT models. And we'd imagine some Aston Martin Rapide drivers taking a second look at BMW's new offering. The car looks complete enough to see a full reveal quite soon, which would mean it could be introduced as a 2020 model.

BMW M8 Gran Coupe Makes Spy Photo Debut

It has the RS7 Sportback, Panamera Turbo, and AMG GT 63 in its sights.

The BMW M5 ticks all the right boxes in our book as it offers the complete package by combining a ridiculous amount of power with the sportiness you’d want from a BMW all wrapped up in a luxurious and fairly practical midsize sedan. For those willing to pay the premium commanded by something even more exciting, the Bavarians will be more than happy to sell them this – the M8 Gran Coupe.

Nearly a year after debuting the namesake concept (pictured at the end) at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, BMW has been spotted out in the open testing the road-going car. It appears we are looking at a near-production prototype with most of the final bits while carrying a generous amount of camouflage to hide the swoopy sedan’s sensual lines. The quad exhaust tips are a telltale sign this is something more exciting than the M850i, while the lowered sports suspension makes the car look as if it’s glued to the road.

Despite the disguise, BMW was kind enough to leave a good chunk of the front bumper exposed to show the menacing air intakes. You’ll be happy to hear the kidney grille is not nearly as big as what the X7 and 7 Series facelift have, and is a perfect size for the M6 Gran Coupe’s direct replacement. We’ve already spotted the M8 Coupe and M8 Convertible, so the design of their more practical sibling does not come as a big surprise. We do notice a somewhat subtle trunk lid spoiler just to let everyone know this isn’t an “ordinary” 8 Series – as if there even is such a thing.
In the power department, we’re expecting the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine to deliver just about the same level of muscle as the M5 and the hotter M5 Competition. In other words, up to 617 horsepower should be on the agenda, if not a bit more considering the M8 Gran Coupe will be placed at the very top of the M hierarchy.
Expect the two-door models to debut in the following months, with the roomier variant to arrive either by the end of the year or early 2020.

Its quad exhaust outlets should be good for keeping snow away, among other things.

We’ve seen BMW’s upcoming four-door 8 Series out and about on numerous occasions, but this time things are a bit different. If the black grille and massive brakes aren’t obvious enough, the quad exhaust outlets at the rear should let you know this is an M8, caught by our photographers for only the second time. Previously we saw the big four-door in a city environment with patches of snow, but testing has since moved to the winter wonderland of Sweden.

It might be a cliché to say the M8’s hot look heats up the cold countryside, but even with camo wrap on most of the car, it looks pretty darned good. Compared to the standard 8 Series, the M edition gets a fresh front fascia with aggressive lower intakes, and the darkened kidney grille is mercifully not as big as the new 7 Series facelift. The lower stance and arching beltline give the big car a presence that’s both elegant and aggressive, and it’s punctuated with the rear wing to create what could be the best-looking M car we’ve seen in a long time.

2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Teased, Debuts Next Month

BMW has released the first teaser images of the 2020 8-Series Gran Coupe.

Set to be unveiled next month, the 8-Series Gran Coupe is being billed as a “four-door sports car of consummate elegance.”
The company was tight-lipped on specifics, but said the model will have “athletic proportions and dynamically flowing lines [that] come together to create an aura of sporting exclusivity.” The automaker went on to say the car will have an extended wheelbase that helps to create “spacious rear compartment” which epitomizes modern luxury. BMW also suggested the suspension has been modified to deliver “enhanced ride comfort” compared to the coupe and convertible.

While the teaser images aren’t very revealing, previous spy photos have shown the 8-Series Gran Coupe will have a familiar front fascia and a long hood. Bigger changes occur aft of the A-pillar as the model has a long sloping roof and two rear doors. Despite this, the flowing bodywork carries over and the sedan retains the coupe’s muscular rear fenders.
The interior should largely carryover and this means we can expect a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment system. Drivers can also expect to find a familiar center console, a three-spoke steering wheel and tasteful metallic accents.
Also Read: 2020 BMW M8 Gran Coupe Is For Those Who Find The M5 Understated
BMW declined to mention performance specifications, but we can expect an assortment of familiar engines. As a result, there should be an 840d which has a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel that produces 316 hp (235 kW / 320 PS) and 501 lb-ft (680 Nm) of torque. There should also be a high-performance M850i with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 cranking out 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. Eventually, there will be an M8 Gran Coupe which could have around 625 PS (460 kW / 617 hp).
Following its debut in late June, the 8-Series Gran Coupe will be launched in September.

2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe mostly revealed in spy shots car ahead of June debut

It looks like an M850i model

The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will be officially revealed in June. In the meantime, we have something of an unofficial reveal with the above spy shots. They show what appears to be an M850i due to its big brakes and aggressive front bumper, and it's on the back of a truck with virtually no camouflage.

Impressively, the Gran Coupe really does look like a stretched version of the coupe. The entire front fascia looks almost identical with its sleek lights and wide grille. In fact, the bumper design is practically identical down to the shapes of the creases. Even along the sides, the fender vent and the lines coming off of it are clearly taken from the coupe. And the back has nearly the same taillights and bumper design. Of course the Gran Coupe is a lot longer and has two more doors. This has also led to a bit of departure with the side window design. There's a more distinct uptick in the window sill line, and it ends in a more vertical line that leaves a thicker C-pillar.

We'll see the rest of the exterior and the interior when the 8 Series Gran Coupe is officially revealed next month. Considering how close the exterior is to the coupe, the dashboard design will probably be lifted straight from the two-door, too. Engines will probably be the same as well with the M850i getting a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 making 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That engine will be coupled to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. An M8 version of this and the coupe are likely coming later.

2020 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe Looks Stunning In New Photos

Several pictures of the 2020 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe have surfaced online, ahead of its debut later this month.

Posted by Auto Express and BMW Blog, the images reveal the upcoming sedan will feature a familiar front fascia with a wide twin kidney grille that is flanked by slender headlights.
Moving further back, we can see front fender vents and a rakish windscreen. Those elements carryover from the coupe, but the sedan adopts a longer wheelbase and two rear doors. We can also see aggressive side skirts and a sloping roof which will likely impact rear seat headroom.

The rear end treatment is certainly familiar as the model has slender taillights and a ventilated fascia. Elsewhere, designers installed an integrated rear spoiler and a dual exhaust system which is separated by a diffuser.
The photos only provide a glimpse of the interior, but it should have a three-spoke steering wheel and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. We can also expect metallic accents and a 10.25-inch infotainment system.

Engine options will carryover from the coupe and convertible, so choices should include a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel that produces 316 hp (235 kW / 320 PS) and 501 lb-ft (680 Nm) of torque. Petrol fans will be able to opt for the M850i which has a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 523 hp (390 kW / 530 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.
Later down the road, BMW will introduce the M8 Gran Coupe. It will have a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that develops 592 hp (441 kW / 600 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque. We can also expect a Competition variant with 617 hp (460 kW / 625 PS).
The 2020 BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe will be launched in September and more details will be released later this month.

2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe’s More Practical Interior Exposed, Nothing New To See

Two days ago the first photos of the all-new 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe surfaced on the web but they only showed the exterior.

Now it’s time to see the cabin as well courtesy of a set of new images posted by users of the GermanCarForum. For those of you who are familiar with the interior of the 8 Series Coupe and 8 Series Convertible, these photos will serve as confirmation that the Gran Coupe is part of the same family.

The dashboard is virtually identical with the aforementioned models and that’s a good thing because the 8 Series’ interior features 7 Series levels of quality and technology. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.25-inch infotainment system screen are familiar sights, as is the brushed metallic trim that adorns the dash and the doors.

This particular Gran Coupe model features a two-tone leather interior in cream and dark blue that looks really luxurious. The upper half of the dashboard is covered in leather as well while the headliner is all Alcantara.
The car features a 2+2 seating configuration but we assume BMW will (eventually) offer it in a five-seat layout as well — as it did with the 6 Series Gran Coupe. The fact that there are three seatbelts in the rear is a pretty strong clue. The 2+2 version features a center console between the two rear seats that features air vents, controls for the climate control system, and two USB ports.

Given the fact that the 8 Series Gran Coupe features a longer wheelbase than the coupe and convertible models, the space situation looks better for rear seat passengers, at least when it comes to knee room. Headroom does not look that generous given the sloping roofline.
BMW will officially unveil the 8 Series Gran Coupe on June 25 at an event held at the BMW Welt in Munich, with the auto show debut most likely scheduled for Frankfurt. The engine lineup will mirror that of the 8 Series Coupe and Convertible, including an M850i twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 530 PS (523 hp) and an 840d turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six diesel with 340 PS (335 hp).

Later on, the M8 Gran Coupe and M8 Competition Gran Coupe will arrive with the same 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 tuned to deliver 600 PS (592 hp) and 625 PS (617 hp), respectively.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 18, 2019...Today, BMW is pleased to announce the new four- door 2020 8 Series Gran Coupes. Available in rear-wheel drive 840i, all-wheel drive 840i xDrive and M850i xDrive models, the new Gran Coupes offer the unmatched combination of beautiful design, luxurious appointments, the latest driver assistance systems, connectivity and sports car performance expected from the top of the line of BMW automobiles.
Presenting a unique design from the windscreen back, the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupes are 9.0 inches longer, 1.2 inches wider, 2.2 inches taller than the 8 Series Coupe feature a wheelbase which is 7.9 inches longer. Handcrafted exterior elements confirm the new 8 Series Gran Coupe as the choice for those discriminating drivers seeking modern elegance and exhilarating performance.
Prices start at $84,900 for the new 2020 840i Gran Coupe, $87,800 for the 840i xDrive Gran Coupe and $108,900 for the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe. Pricing does not include $995 Destination.

Exterior design

The new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe, irrespective of engine choice, offers a stunning and powerful sweeping four-door body with wide flanks and sharp creased modern lines. In fact, with a rear track of 65.8 inches (1.2 inches wider than the 8 Series Coupe) the 8 Series Gran Coupe stands on the widest rear track of any BMW automobile; a design criteria which required an update of the Plant Dingolfing assembly line in order to accommodate the new, wider platform.

From the a-pillar back, the 8 Series Gran Coupe design differs from that of the Coupe to both increase interior space and deliver a vehicle with strong presence and authority. The windshield features less rake than in the Coupe to allow the roofline to raise to a higher point above the front seats, providing increased headroom for both front and rear passengers. The roof then merges into the rear trunk lid with fin-like transitional lines to create the visual of a long and flowing body. The rear glass is mounted with increased rake to increase the size of the trunk opening and also acts to from a fixed part of the body’s structure to increase torsional rigidity and reduce noise entering the cabin. The subtle flying buttress design of the rear glass surround requires that the finishing folds of the metalwork be done by hand, a unique feature of the 8 Series Gran Coupe that allows for a truly elegant design to be delivered to each and every owner.

The standard panoramic glass moonroof stretches from the front windshield all the way back to the rear window, flooding the cabin with light. The multi-functional antenna is integrated into the rear glass, eliminating the need for the roof-mounted shark fin antenna and allowing the new larger glass roof. From Nov. 2019 production, the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe will offer an optional Carbon Fiber roof which replaces the glass moonroof and lowers both the weight and center of gravity of the Gran Coupe to further improve handling and performance.
Standard Icon Adaptive LED Headlights with Laserlight flank the one piece hexagonal BMW kidney grille surround which frames active air intake slats inside. Large openings in either side of the front bumper give the low-slung front end of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe an aggressive appearance. Functional Air Breathers let air flow through the front fenders improving both aerodynamics and styling. The Hofmeister kink in the expansive c-pillar ties the flowing side profile lines of the new Gran Coupe to heavily sculptures rear fenders and trunk lid. Slim LED rear lights stand high above trapezoidal twin exhaust pipes.

An intelligent mix of lightweight materials helps to reduce weight in the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. Aluminum construction is used for the doors, hood, roof, front bulkhead, engine subframe and rear bumper support. The trunk lid is made from dent-resistant plastic while the cabin dashboard support is made from magnesium and parts of the center driveline tunnel are made from carbon-fiber reinforced plastic.

Interior design

The BMW 8 Series’ blend of sporting flair and luxury can now be enjoyed from all five available seats in the new Gran Coupe. The longer wheelbase and wider rear flanks of the sleek 8 Series Gran Coupe have allowed for sizable increases in interior space. Front head room increases by 0.2 inches while rear headroom is up by 3.4 inches. Rear legroom increases by a substantial 7.1 inches while rear shoulder room improves by 7.7 inches. The trunk gains 0.7 cu. ft of room.

The welcoming interior features touches such as Nappa leather on the dashboard and upper door panels, electroplated air vent surrounds and door trim and quilting and decorative stitching on the seating surfaces. The extended center console in the 8 Series Gran Coupe is unique to the model and continues into the rear space, dividing the individually-styled right and left seats while still allowing for the rear center seat space to be used when needed. The rear console offers passengers individual right and left climate controls, air vents, storage tray and USB-C ports.

The standard heated front sport seats feature integrated headrests and are designed with a thinner profile to allow for greater rear knee space. All four main seats offer generous levels of lateral support so that the performance capabilities of the 8 Series Gran Coupe can be enjoyed by all passengers. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 configuration allowing for any variation of passengers and cargo on both short and long trips.

The standard ambient light feature emphasizes the forward-pointing lines inside the car to striking effect. Indirect illumination of the contour lines running along the center console and the door shoulders using precisely positioned LED optical fibers creates an exclusive mood.

Paints finishes and interior trim

Standard paint finishes on the new 8 Series Gran Coupe include non-metallic Alpine White and metallic finishes in Carbon Black (when the M Sport package is selected), Black Sapphire (840i and 840i xDrive only), Mineral White, Sonic Speed Blue, Sunset Orange, Bluestone (840i and 840i xDrive only), Blue Ridge Mountain (840i and 840i xDrive only) and Barcelona Blue (840i and 840i xDrive only).

Optional Individual paint finishes include Dravit Grey Metallic, Tanzanite Blue II Metallic, Aventurin Red Metallic and Frozen Bluestone Metallic.
The 840i and 840i xDrive Gran Coupes feature standard Vernasca leather in either Black, Ivory White or Cognac. Optional on these two models and standard on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe is Individual Extended Merino Leather in Black Ivory White, Cognac and two-tone Night Blue/Black, Tartufo/Black and Fiona Red/Black.

BMW Individual Full Merino leather is optional on all three Gran Coupe models and includes Black, Cognac, Ivory White, Ivory White/Night Blue, Ivory White/Tartufo, Night Blue/Black, Tartufo/Black and Fiona Red/Black.

6-cylinder Power and performance

The BMW 840i and 840i xDrive Gran Coupe models are powered by the latest iteration of BMW’s TwinPower 3.0 liter inline 6-cylinder Turbo engine. Weighing 13 lbs less than its predecessor, the new engine produces 335 hp between 5,000 – 6,500 rpm and 368 lb-ft of torque between 1,600 – 4,500 rpm. This allows the rear-wheel drive 840i Gran Coupe to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds while the added traction of BMW xDrive allows the 840i xDrive Gran Coupe to reach 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Both vehicles feature an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph when equipped with all-season tires and 155 mph when equipped with performance tires.

The new 6-cylinder engine features an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head, a twin-scroll turbocharger with quicker response and direct injection technology working at an increased maximum pressure of 350 bar. A housing with improved flow characteristics and turbines with reduced masses both help the turbocharging system to ensure rapid build-up of pressure, and the charge air cooler has been incorporated into the intake system. The latest version of the VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing system makes the sort of swift, high- precision adjustments that facilitate instantaneous power delivery and improve engine efficiency. The exhaust manifold embedded in the cylinder head cooling jacket, the new oil module with integral heat exchanger and the split-cooling valve delivering on-demand control of the cooling system all serve to optimize the engine’s temperature management. Efficiency is given a further boost by the low-friction belt drive and the reduced weight of both the crankshaft and oil pump.

V8 Power and performance

The BMW M850i xDrive Gran Coupe is powered by the latest generation of the BMW TwinPower 4.4-liter eight-cylinder Turbo engine. Power production is rated at 523 hp between 5,500 – 6,000 rpm and 553 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 – 4,600 rpm which allow this model to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 130 mph when equipped with all-season tires and 155 mph when equipped with performance tires.

Two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling located within the V-shaped space between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing all form part of the M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology, whose extensive overhaul has given a substantial boost to maximum power, torque and efficiency.

The new V8 engine serves up an enthralling sound, which is enhanced by the standard flap- controlled sports exhaust system. It boasts a wonderfully versatile character that can also adapt itself to effortlessly relaxed cruising. The Driving Experience Control switch can be used to activate both extremely sporty and distinctly comfort-oriented powertrain settings. In the SPORT and SPORT+ modes, accelerator response as well as the V8 engine’s power delivery and acoustics – which take on a particularly distinctive note in the SPORT+ setting – are all configured for an exhilarating driving experience.

A new aluminium alloy has been used to increase the strength of the engine block. The wire- arc sprayed iron coating for the cylinder walls serves to reduce frictional losses. Reinforced, Grafal-coated pistons and optimized piston rings are designed to endure the stress on the crank drive that comes with the extra output and torque. To enhance engine smoothness, torsional vibration is minimized with the help of a viscous damper on the crankshaft.

Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive

Both engines transfer power to the driveline through the latest improved version of the Steptronic Sport automatic transmission featuring a weight-reducing design, a newly developed controller and a wider gear ratio spread. The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission now shifts gear more sharply courtesy of an optimized hydraulics control unit. A new generation of torsion dampers that reduce rotational forces within the powertrain help improve both driving comfort and shift smoothness.

Integral twin-damper systems for isolating vibrations reduce the degree of slip at the torque converter lock-up clutch.

Shift paddles on the steering wheel are included as standard for manual gear selection, while a Launch Control function allows for accelerating from a standing start with maximum available traction.

The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission’s controller can adapt its shift parameters to the current driving situation through intelligent networking with the standard Navigation system, enabling it to take the planned route into account. Navigation data is used to downshift early, for example, when approaching an intersection in order to use engine braking to slow the car down. Likewise, the intelligent controller is able to avoid unnecessary gear shifts between two corners that follow in quick succession, making it possible to drive through at a quicker pace.
In the 840i xDrive and M850i xDrive Gran Coupe models, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel- drive system features rapid, precise and fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels, maximizing traction and handling stability not just when driving in adverse road conditions, but in performance driving situations as well. Power is split in accordance with demands at all times using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that is networked with the powertrain and chassis systems.

To increase the system’s efficiency, all of the drive torque is directed to the rear wheels in situations when all-wheel drive is not needed. The xDrive system’s rear-biased set-up guarantees a driving experience for which BMW sports cars are renowned.

Chassis, Suspension and Steering

The longer and wider platform of the 8 Series Gran Coupe offers great benefits in ride comfort and high speed stability. The front double-wishbone suspension, rear five-link suspension, electromechanical steering and standard Dynamic Damper Control combine to give the driver the ultimate combination of comfort and precise, sport handling. The design principle of the double-wishbone front suspension makes it possible to separate steering and damper functions. As a result, high lateral acceleration forces are possible without compromising ride comfort. The car’s steering remains largely unaffected by disruptive forces caused by irregularities in the road surface. Thanks to bi-elastic bushings, the five-link rear suspension guarantees precise wheel guidance and the highest degree of directional stability. In addition, effective isolation of the powertrain and suspension improves interior acoustic comfort.

Integral Active Steering is standard on the 840i xDrive and M850i xDrive Gran Coupe models and optional on the 840i Gran Coupe. Integral Active Steering reduces the car’s turning circle when maneuvering, increases agility at moderate speeds and optimizes stability when changing lanes and cornering at high speeds. The system combines the electromechanical steering of the front wheels (including Servotronic function for speed-sensitive power assistance) and the variable steering ratio in the rear axle steering.

Driver Assistance Systems

The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is available with a wide variety of standard and optional driver assistance systems. The systems really come into their own when driving longer distances by relieving the strain on the driver in monotonous situations, such as traffic jams or slow-moving traffic. They enhance comfort and safety both in urban traffic and on longer trips by providing targeted assistance in complex traffic situations. The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs.

Standard equipment includes Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation. Depending on the situation, the system can bring the vehicle to a halt to either avoid a collision or minimize its consequences.
The optional Driving Assistance Professional contains Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Surround View Camera, Parking Assistant, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Speed Limit Information. On top of that, the Driving Assistance Professional offers comprehensive assistance for comfortable and safe driving. This package includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. It can be used at speeds up to 130 mph and maintains the desired speed while taking not only the traffic situation into account, but also the selected distance to vehicles in front. If required, the system is able to brake the car to a stop then pull away again automatically after being stationary for up to 30 seconds, meaning greater comfort in stop-start traffic. Camera images and data from a front radar system are used for distance control.

Another component of the Driving Assistance Professional Package is the Lane Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection. This system is designed to help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the correct path with an active turn of the steering wheel. Besides emitting visual warning signals and causing the steering wheel to vibrate, active side collision protection also uses active steering intervention to help avoid a collision. Moreover, this package includes Extended Traffic Jam Assistant for limited access highways, which allows for even more relaxed driving at speeds lower than 40 mph during highly congested highway traffic situations. The Driving Assistance Professional Package includes Evasion Aid, which now also reacts to pedestrians and Front Cross Traffic Alert – which reduces the danger of a collision when maneuvering forwards towards roads that are obstructed from the driver’s view.

The latest-generation Head-Up Display.

The latest generation of the BMW Head-Up display system features a larger projection area, optimized graphics and additional content. The BMW Head-Up Display projects information directly into the driver’s field of vision where it can be viewed without any need for them to divert their eyes from the road. This includes details of vehicle speed, speed limits and overtaking restrictions, Check Control messages, status indicators and warnings from the assistance systems, detailed route guidance and turn instructions, as well as telephone and entertainment lists. The displayed information and style can be adjusted via the new M mode button on the center console.

Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe combines the latest-generation of the iDrive, featuring a high-resolution digital 12.3” instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel and a 10.25” center display diagonally across.

The system offers many hardware upgrades including new haptic controls on the iDrive controller, an advanced tablet-like touch interface, and stunning visualizations. The multi-modal approach of the iDrive touch controller, large touchscreen center display, cloud-based voice control, and gesture control allow users to interact in the way of their choosing.
Elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are the Navigation Professional system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 32 GB of memory and two USB ports, plus Bluetooth interfaces. The driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated either using the traditional vehicle key or by downloading the driver’s personal settings the BMW Cloud.

BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility.

BMW Connected is the companion app for BMW drivers. Intelligent connectivity helps users to reach their destination easily and with minimal stress – and not only from within their car;
BMW Connected is an all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and their smartphone with their vehicle.

At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the app to connect the car with the customer’s digital devices. These could include the iPhone and Apple Watch, smartphones and smartwatches running the Android operating system, Alexa-compatible smart devices and Google Home. For instance, the BMW Connected app can import appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The system calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their smartphone when it is time to leave. As the vehicle is linked up via the Open Mobility Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route directly when the navigation system starts up.

The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Is The For The Real Sedan Heads

If you want a nice and good and fine four-door BMW, you get a BMW 5 Series. If you want a nice and good and fine version of that four-door but want it with only two doors, you get a BMW 8 series. If you want a nice and good and fine four-door version of the two-door version of the BMW 5 Series, you get this, the 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe. And no, we don’t care how silly that is, because this really does look good.

(I know this is all confusing, but bear with me now. We’ve been talking about the BMW 8 Series for a while, however this all bears repeating. It barely makes sense to me and I’m swimming in car nonsense all the time. The BMW 6 Series was a nameplate resurrected by BMW for the 2004 model year to serve as sort of a coupe-y version of the BMW 5 Series, and which ran for two generations, including coupe, convertible, and fastback variants, until 2018. That car has been replaced by what is essentially a car filling the same niche in every, known as the BMW 8 Series. But it’s the same idea. Anyways, hi, hello, let’s all just relax and get through this.)

There’s this notion out there that just because your car has four doors, it is a sedan, and thus it must be a bit rounded around the edges. It must be a bit squatter, a bit chubbsier, if it were. We don’t make rules like that for anything else. We don’t say, “oh, your car has four tail lights? Well then it must be painted mauve.” But the sedan rule is sadly the code of the yard in which we live. So if it has four doors, and really looks athletic as hell, it must be called a Gran Coupe, in BMW parlance.
All that is a bit of a red herring, though. Because this isn’t really just a BMW 5 Series with a shrink and then another stretch. It’s a unique design from the windshield back, so sayeth BMW in its press release:
Presenting a unique design from the windscreen back, the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupes are 9.0 inches longer, 1.2 inches wider, 2.2 inches taller than the 8 Series Coupe [and] feature a wheelbase which is 7.9 inches longer.

BMW says that the sedan version of the BMW 8 Series is nine inches longer with a 7.9-inch longer wheelbase, 1.2 inches wider, and 2.2 inches taller than the BMW 8 Series coupe. Even the front seats have a thinner profile, to afford backseaters about 7 inches of leg room over the coupe.

(Though, curiously, BMW doesn’t provide a handy comparison of the rear legroom in the 8 Series Gran Coupe to the 5 Series Sedan. Hm.)
But for all the petty squabbling over the name, let’s just talk about the car for a second. It really is the sort of proportions that all modern sedan makers should aspire for. I mean, as all of SUV-and-crossover-dom does a subversive slide into what really is just a regular car, why not have regular cars be long and low and look muscular as hell?

I mean, just look at this thing. It’s all odd bulges and crevasses. It’s a bit like the same effect you get from looking at the underside of a stealth fighter.

The inside looks pretty great, too, with the rear especially looking like two cobras swaddled up in New York Yankees gear – truly, an evil combo if there ever was one:

As for the front, well, it’s pretty standard upper-level BMW circa now:

And since it’s an upper-level BMW from circa now, you get BMW’s upper-level-BMW-circa-now engines as well, namely the B58 turbocharged inline-six with 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque (available in both rear-and-all-wheel-drive, naturally), and a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 pumping out a heaping 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque.
Both will get you moving just fine, I’m sure, and both route the power through the company’s eight-speed “Steptronic Sport” automatic transmission. Though you already knew that sort of stuff, if you were paying attention to the BMW 8 Series at all before just this moment.

Anyways, if you’re a true 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe obsessive, because sure that’s a thing, go check out BMW’s whole rundown of the car here. They talk about the flappy paddles for the transmission and the wheels and how they’re still going to try to sell you on electric steering, nearly 20 years later.

They also have a ton of super high-res photos, which you can peruse to your greatest pleasures. What do you think I’m gonna do, spend my night here uploading a million huge photos of a nice BMW sedan (prices starting at an eye-watering $84,900, of course, and that’s with only six pistons in the engine, it’ll be $108,900 if you want eight of those)?

Look, I said the thing was pretty. I didn’t say it would change your life. Just click the link if you really want it.

BMW M8 Gran Coupe Tortures Tires During Nurburgring Test

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

Video URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLgAnUIeWh8

The M6 Gran Coupe replacement is shaping up quite nicely.

The golden era of the sedan is long gone, especially in today’s SUV-obsessed automotive world, but BMW is getting ready to add some excitement to the once popular body style with its new four-door 8er. Once you get past its confusing “Gran Coupe” moniker, the most practical member of the reborn 8 Series family is a breath of fresh air for those not willing to jump on the SUV bandwagon.

Seen this week going hard at the Nürburgring, the 8 Series Gran Coupe was undergoing testing in the range-topping M8 guise. It could be a sign we won’t have to wait much longer following the regular model’s debut to check out the flagship M version. As you are probably aware by now, the standard car is scheduled for an unveiling later this year, so maybe its M counterpart will debut early-to-mid-2020.

Entirely camouflaged, the prototype appears to be wearing the full production body and the final lights, which are all expected to resemble those of the gorgeous Concept M8 Gran Coupe (pictured at the end) exhibited at the Geneva Motor Show a little over a year ago. It goes without saying the road-going car won’t be able to match the pizzazz of the concept, but looking at this prototype as it tackles the many corners of the Nürburgring, the large sedan is shaping up quite nicely.
Going up against the Audi RS7 Sportback and the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, BMW’s 6 Series Gran Coupe replacement will use an uprated version of the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. In the M850i flavor, the engine will push out 523 horsepower as it does in the equivalent coupe and convertible models. Step up to the full-fat M8 and we’re probably looking at over 600 hp considering the M5 Competition has 617 hp on tap.
We’ll learn almost everything there is to know about the car in a matter of months considering BMW will soon unveil the M8 Coupe and the regular 8 Series Gran Coupe.

2020 BMW 840i Gran Coupe: Great White Shark Reviewed And Photographed In Detail

The international media launch of the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe took place recently in Faro, Portugal, giving the automaker a good excuse to drop a massive photo gallery of the new model.

The Gran Coupe is the last body style to join the all-new 8 Series lineup, following the two-door Coupe and Cabriolet. It’s arguably the best looking 8 Series model, a fact made quite obvious by BMW’s gallery of an 840i Gran Coupe in Mineral White paintwork.

The 840i moniker means there’s a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six gasoline engine under the long hood making 335 hp (340 PS) at 5,000 – 6,500 rpm and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) at 1,600 – 4,500 rpm. The “entry-level” BMW 840i Gran Coupe is the only model available at launch with rear-wheel drive, as all the other variants feature xDrive as standard.

Mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, the engine enables plentiful performance: the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 5.2 seconds (4.9 seconds with the optional xDrive system) and the top speed is electronically limited at 155 mph (250 km/h).

Let’s not forget that this is a massive car that measures 5,082 millimeters (200 inches) in length and, in this configuration, weighs 1,800 kg (3,968 lbs) unladen. Those who want more performance can always go for the 523 hp (530 PS) M850i xDrive Gran Coupe or wait for the upcoming M8 Gran Coupe with up to 616 hp (625 PS) in Competition guise.
