Default Timing belt failure

Had a 2005 Chevy Aveo with 143K miles come in the shop last week. We pulled off the timing cover and found that the idler pulley had come apart. This bent all 16 valves requiring the engine to be replaced.

I know it's expensive and often ignored but it needs to be done every 100K miles or 10 years.

We installed a replacement engine with 100K miles. Before installation, we replaced all the timing components, rear main seal, valve cover intake and exhaust gaskets. This car should be good for another 100K miles or 10 years.

Also curious what their final tally was on the Aveo.

For the Neon, fluids and labor only would be $600. I get a lot of people who just want that.

Since the engine is out I would recommend doing a lot more since the labor cost would be minimal compared to what it would be if the engine were in the car. This adds considerable to the cost but if you want to keep the car it's worth it.

It is a 95 Neon though.

We completed the Aveo last night.

The customer chose not to fix the car, they owed money on it and ended up working a deal with the car lot to purchase another vehicle and give it back to them.

The dealer is from Hutcheson and his junk car buyer was not willing to travel to KC to pick up the car so he offered it to me, which I purchased.

$300 Engine cost (pick-n-pull)
$400 parts and fluids
$400 for my mechanic
$400 for the shop.

30 day warranty on the engine, 12 month warranty on the work.

Pretty sure this would have been a better route in the long run for the prior owner. Oh well. Onto their $125/week car payment for a 2007 Pontiac G6.

^^^ Corrected it.

I quoted her 2k, I usually don't do a PnP engine for a customer. I try and get something from LKQ with a 12mo warranty.

Why aren't more motors non interference when it comes to timing belts. Seems idiotic not to have that design

Because as a general rule is would drastically reduce the specific output of an engine.

How about why don't more people just follow that damn guidelines for timing belt replacement intervals?

I have to wait for the title from the dealer, hope it will be here next week.

I'll list it on CL for $3,500.
