depends, what kind/ brand of filter is it?? are there only those two filter pads?? no Bio wheel?

If it is just two pads change one out for a new one then wait 1 week and do the same with the other. dont do both at once- or

when preforming a water change clean the crud out of them in a bucket of the old water as that wont kill the nitrifying bacteria.

do this every other week (best) or 1x month (okay)
mainly just make sure your Ph doesn't go below 7.0 cause nitrifying bacteria stop converting ammonia(bad) into nitrate (harmless) when it drops below that.

ironically, the process the bacteria go through to do this puts off small amounts of CO2 into the water, which reacts and creates carbonic acid which drops Ph.

in turn the more bio- load your tank has the more bacteria/processes =more rapidly declining Ph.

if you live in KC / use city water its about 8.5-9.0 so doing a small water change will raise your ph safely.

I always advise people to test ammonia before doing anything that may raise Ph. ammonia affects fish more so at higher Ph levels
