Default What do we need to do to make KCSR great again?

Let's take some time to chat honestly and without trolling. The site has declined significantly. The classified section has become a ghost town. New member enrollment and participation has flatlined with old members leaving and not returning.

Please list some thoughts so we can consolidate them.

Thoughts of my own

New Members:
-First impression is key. The site's "orange monkey" default theme is horrible, IMO. That's what new members are presented with and the eye sore it is may not encourage participation, and many probably have no idea that the theme can be changed.

-Outlook and attitude towards new members is generally poor. A call on all members to try to be respectful of new members is important.

Classifieds:
-The template and/or enforcement of the template has to stop. We need to make it as simple and welcoming as can be to encourage classified sales.

-Rules of the section need to be trimmed. "useless bumps" are no longer a problem and it's debatable if they were ever really a problem, IMO, as they kept the section alive with discussion. Without discussion, threads fall off, don't keep visibility in the "new posts" function, and I believe that's contributed to their loss of use (in addition to outside factors)

Forum sections:
-When we had a ton of activity it made sense to break out into separate sections. Now those get very little activity and just adds to the clutter of navigating the site.

As you help us brainstorm ideas, I'll add your thoughts and name here as a contributor.

Honestly, there isn't a ton you can do. All forums are having a rough time with Facebook, especially with Facebook adding the marketplace now.

Most people that no longer post on here keep up with who they want to on social media.

you need more members. when it's the same 20 people forever it will just always break down into trolling IMO.

i think facebook is definitely at its peak. it reminds me of myspace at its biggest; rapidly devolving into a steaming pile of shit almost fast enough to watch it live. advertising is taking over, you only see the posts that facebook puts at the top of your feed, etc. it is nowhere near what it was 5 years ago. I have been off for about 5 months now and I don't miss it one bit, and I know I'm not alone.

Maybe eventually forums will take off again. It feels like reddit keeps gaining traction.

Too many sections. For everything. Too many general forum sections, too many classified sections and too many automotive sections.

I doubt that will really increase the traffic at all with new/returning members, but it will certainly clean the place up and make the forums that are used more lively.

What kind of forum would you like KCSR to be? A social site? A site that focuses on a specific hobby or interest?

Almost every thread I wander into is the same 5 people bickering at each other. And it's not even on the topic of the thread. That can be a turn off for newer folks

Not that it would really help membership, but there are too many subsections, and the "true" KCSR automotive section is buried in the middle. That should be the focus of the site. Everything else is bonus.

Make cars first.

Social Media is killing the web forum, it's pretty evident unless you make a stronger stand there this medium is going to die out.

Did you know KCSR has a Facebook page? They share a name & that is about it, then some contributors to the FB page posted pictures up that turned A LOT of people off the page, I am sure they un-followed at that point.

I am a contributor on there and have attempted to "meld" the 2 and get more people here and there but I am only 1 person

I agree with cars first. Forums are definitely struggling but the ones with a very specific focus as a first draw are the ones still doing well.

Even being cars first though, we aren't a vehicle/make specific forum so the main draw used to be street racing. Not sure if we can still maintain that draw without a specific aspect.

I haven't unfollowed the facebook page but the barely work safe memes plastered all over the page is a good way to ensure people can only visit it outside of work hours.

KCSR just has a specific niche that was killed off over the past few years...

There are brand specific car forums, so this forum is a secondary thought there

There are social media platforms to stay in touch with friends or share info/news, so this forum is secondary too

The selling point of KCSR was that it was the hidden space for NWS localized content that you could let loose w/o offending your 'normal' friend group

Unless the local aspect or drama aspect kicks up a notch it's just a habit time killer for most folks

Because many moons ago, we all used to actually get together, have BBQ's, Tommy's parties, Car meets. There were "big" names in the kc car scene on here, that thrived people to want to see updates on their cars. Now every fast car has a facebook page and people can get updates that way.

KCSR itself, has became nothing more than assholes, new members come in (some get greeted well) most come in make a post and get get bashed to hell. Now old members know that has always been a trend of kcsr.

The over whelming selections of forums and choosing which one to post, without getting told "WRONG SECTION POST MOVED" it gives off the vibe of wtf why post if its just going to get me bitched at.

Its a great website, and honestly could regain its popularity, but it will have to come with a new generation of people. Lots of the users now are middle aged, have families, and have grown up alot but that does not mean no one can have fun.

I agree on the KCSR FB page. Perhaps use the FB page in a productive way and use it to link to hot discussion topics.

I think the fact that it's nigh impossible to have a discussion of any kind that doesn't devolve into one side attacking the other side instead of debating the issue itself.

I would like to see this forum keep going. I have been on here since the beginning (u/n was yellowhonda88 originally) and I still check in about daily. Although anymore its just to peek into AAG, Auto Lounge and the pics/vids section. I hardly ever post, hence the sub-1000 post count) but I actually do enjoy following builds on cars, homes etc. About the only thing I don't like is the constant bashing but even then I think it's most just dicking around so whatever.

I agree what the others say as well. I started on this forum as a young kid into the import scene and now I am in my mid-30's with a wife and kid so the time to spend perusing threads just isn't there. That being said, I will be bummed when it finally comes to an end.

Well, not having bigoted, prejudiced moderators that go from 0-100 in the blink of an eye could be a good start.

This. I remember coming from Omaha in huge crews and cruising around all night. And another time a huge party at somebody's duplex (chiggy?) and sleeping on the floor with Kane's dog lol, going out to eat in huge groups, actual racing, etc.

probably because most of the casual fans stopped caring to stay up until 4am anymore.

it's actually very much alive , this is another one of those "social media" killed the need for a forum it's alive via SnapChats, Periscope etc... it's quick and easy vs posting on here.

I know I have or had the Facebook page, but it isn't showing up in my newsfeed.

Why not a group instead? You can approve members, easily delete if needed... Scooby - if you are interested, I have one I will give you a link for that I belong to that you might be interested in modeling after in terms of rules and the way debates are done. Possibly two. One is more along the lines of debate... the second one would be more photography related - which means specific interest related.

As far as classifieds - Facebook now has the market feature that you can use for selling things. I run a group for people I work with just so they can sell to someone they know first, but it is also for things like socializing etc...

As far as forums - I know LS2 is having the same discussion... they're losing a lot of members. I think some of their admin don't even post there much anymore.

I haven't checked into my photography forum lately... no tapatalk, and I don't get to my PC often.

I don't know the last time a new member joined and actually stuck around. Every thread ends up to some form of JW and Karlen bitching at each other, or slamming Dave B on vaccinations, or xXSTI and Carlos getting into shit, or Dondo or supersaiyanjim going completely off the reservation.

I miss the old days of KCSR, but I just don't think we'll ever get back to those days.

I'd say complete re-vamp of the forum.
  • Get rid of Orange Monkey altogether, it's fucking hideous and always has been.
  • Reduce the number of subforums, so many of them haven't had a single post in MONTHS, and many of the Automotive sections have gone over a year without a single post. Get rid of classifieds altogether, or maybe just reduce to cars, parts, and other. There are better avenues to sell items now.
  • Focus on meets - why should people stay around here, if it's the same circle of people just bickering? Hell, I've been on KCSR since what, 2001 or 2002? I have met maybe 5 people from the site? Let's have a freaking BBQ, or focus on meets. Give people a reason to come back to KCSR other than the same bickering debates.

Forums in general are dying. I have one motorcycle specific forum that still gets decent traffic, otherwise they have mostly moved to Facebook groups or Reddit. We will never get back to the big number of subs we had, but we can definitely streamline the forum to better suit our current size. This would make it a lot more appealing and easy to navigate for new users. Right now a new user would come, browse and see that 50 subs have very little traffic, and assume the site is dead.

Kansas City street racing need to be the focus of the site in order for it to be relevant.
- Lots of big events in the KC automotive scene have occurred with very little coverage or attention on KCSR. That can't happen on a regional STREET RACING website.

There are way too many sections

The default color scheme sucks

KCSR needs to be the meeting spot for car people, car BUILDERS, and racers.

Those are a few of my thoughts.
