Default Report: Next Nissan Z to be lighter, may get 4-cylinder turbo

Gallery - 17 images

The Nissan 370Z is due for a nice change and according to reports the next-generation model will be leaner, lighter and will appeal to a broader group of customers.
In a recent review with Inside Line Nissan’s design boss Shiro Nakamura said that development on the new Z is still at ‘an early stage.’ He said a concept version of the car is currently in the works and should debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.
Nakamura said that the next model has to have a huge impact. Going leaner would be mean dropping the 3.7 liter V6 for a 4-cylinder turbo. “It needs to be lighter, and more accessible to open the door to more people,” he adds.

The recent alliance with Daimler should give Nissan a nice Mercedes-Benz parts bin to dig into for cheaper cost development.

An aluminum 4 cylinder with a turbo is going to weigh just as much as a aluminum V6. Just keep the Z like it is with a V6 since going back to a 240 or 260Z isn't an option, keep it a 370Z to "compete" with the mustang crowd, and then make a 2?0sx turbo 4 cylinder to compete with the FRS/BRZ.

The new z will need to step up its game from the last model to compete with the current lineup of models that other manufactures offer.

It's going to have to get a lot lighter and have a lot of power to even equal what it is now.

Nissan 370Z replacement for Tokyo reveal

Nissan is to reveal a new small sports car at the Tokyo motor show in November
Nissan's new sports car is likely to replace the 370Z

Nissan will reveal a new small sports car at the Tokyo motor show in November.
The new car is set to preview a replacement to the Nissan 370Z, Nissan development chief Andy Palmer revealed to Autocar at the Frankfurt motor show.
The Tokyo show car is likely to be a concept, and is set to completely redefine the Z car concept away from its current brutish application. Palmer confirmed the new model would be “smaller and lighter”, but no less powerful than the current model with power set to come from a downsized turbocharged engine.
It’s possible the concept version could use an electric drivetrain, with production versions set to switch to petrol power. However, it’s feasible an electric version could be in the car’s line-up, although Palmer remained coy on exact details, hinting at both.
He did however confirm that the new model would “feature a high performance Nismo version to ensure it could compete in the market it’s already in”.
“I don’t want to position it as a Toyota GT86 style car though,” he said. “That traditional sleek sports car is nice but not the market I want to address. I want to address the issue of a next generation sports car.”
Palmer wants the new car to become a poster model for a new generation of car fans, with as much emphasis on connectivity as performance.
“Kids in the UK are no longer taking their driving test,” he said, “and we have to energise those kids. The car has been demonised to them, so we have to find a new way to recall them. There’s no demons in an electric motor with lots of power and torque. You can look at the Juke Nismo as well for elements of the new car.”
Palmer said he has seen the car and driven it, and described it as “enjoyable and energising”.

Nissan 370Z Replacement Will Draw From Classic 240Z

Nissan is working on a replacement for the 370Z, a car that looked like an evolution of its predecessor, the 350Z. However, they are apparently not going to continue down the same path, and the new car will be more like the old 240Z than the one it’s actually replacing.

Think of it as an evolution of the Esflow concept (pictured) shown in 2011 – that clearly had a lot of 240 in its side profile, even if the front end was far more contemporary and therefor different.

In fact, the Esflow may very well be a preview of what they have planned, and they showed it to gauge opinions which apparently were positive enough for them to make this decision. They also received positive feedback in regards to the IDx concepts they showed, but now they’ve decided to try a different technique with that model.

The information comes from Autoblog after sitting down with Shiro Nakamura, Nissan’s Chief Creative Officer, on the sidelines of the Le Mans 24 hours race.

What Nakamura basically said was “we are studying a couple of different concepts. Because the sports car market is becoming smaller globally. We would like to do something, I personally think, is more [in the] original concept of Z, which is ... more practical and appealing to younger customers."

Basically, Nissan wants to make a car that is traditional in its layout, but innovative in the way it looks and fits in the market. It won’t be a direct rival to the Toyota GT86, but since the automaker won’t make an IDx-like smaller sporty model, then perhaps the Z-replacement could be made to fill that role too.

That design has some potential. Not sure about the zero emissions badge, though...

That design looks like poop...it is like a wannabe sporty smart car.

I hope they don't go the 4cyl turbo route. Make it a V8 with some power or stick to the 6cyl twin turbo that made the Z car even more iconic in 1990.

I'm all for a smaller, lighter, turbo 4 Z getting back to it's roots and having a lower price tag to boot. Do it in a 2+2 configuration and you'll capture the bitchy BRZ/FRS crowd wanting a turbo 4.

Hell, even a detuned GTR engine making 375-400hp would be awesome.

Nissan/Inifniti had a chance to make a car w/ the GTR engine and got scared (also the co. head jumped ship to GM)

Putting a twin turbo V6 would increase the cost of the car substantially. So many chassis enhancements would be needed to match the power output. In the end you'd have a Z that's fast, but also very expensive and would probably be slower than an SS Camaro, Mustang GT, etc. all the while probably costing more. Nissan learned their lesson back in the 90s with the twin turbo Z. Great car, but too expensive.

Nissan needs to be going after the Miata and BRZ market where there's a decent group of those wanting a fairly cheap RWD sportscar, but one that offers a bit more power than the Miata/BRZ. A 1.8/2.0 liter turbo Z for low 30s would fit the bill.

a boosted 4cyl will definitely do away with the weaksauce torque curve that the current 370z has.

Moving on to the Nissan 370Z replacement, it will apparently be cheaper and could be offered initially only with a targa top and a Mercedes-Benz-derived four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine working together with an electric motor and a seven-speed automatic transmission. This hardware arrangement should provide a combined output of 247 bhp (184 kW) while later on there's going to be a high-performance version with a V6 3.0-liter engine also from Mercedes-Benz.
It will apparently be out sometime next year and might receive the "Z35" designation. We could get a first taste of the car towards the end of October at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show where Nissan is expected to show a concept.

Nissan Teases Sporty Crossover Concept, May Be Hinting At High-Riding Z

Teaser for sporty Nissan crossover concept debuting at 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show

A couple of weeks ago, we heard that Nissan was tossing up a radical change in direction for its next Z car, one that would ditch the conventional sports car format in favor of a small, sporty crossover body. As previously reported, the logic behind such a move is to get new, younger enthusiasts interested in the brand. In case you had somehow missed it, crossovers are all the rage these days.
Well, perhaps our worst fears have been confirmed as Nissan has previewed a new crossover concept that the automaker says hints at “a new way to feel driving excitement.” We’ll see the concept unveiled for the first time at next week’s 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show and word on the street is that it will wear the famous Z badge.
No other details have been released but for an idea of what a small, sporty crossover from Nissan might be like, one need only look at the automaker’s Extrem Sports concept from 2012 (shown below). It shows that Nissan has been considering the idea of a sports car-turned-crossover for a number of years.
Nissan Extrem Concept

It wasn’t long ago that Nissan was planning a three-tier sports car lineup with a GT-R at the top, a new Z in the middle, and an entry-level model with elements from the pair of IDx concept cars at the bottom. However, the hard reality that sports cars often fail to attract mainstream audiences has got Nissan rethinking its plans.

While nothing has been confirmed, British publication Autocar is reporting that the production green light for a Z crossover has already been given and that the new car is due within the next 18 months. It’s said to be closely aligned with the next-generation Juke subcompact crossover, which Nissan recently confirmed would ride on Renault Nissan’s CMF-B modular platform.

The Frankfurt Auto Show gets underway Tuesday, September 15 so we should have all the details soon. In the meantime, visit our dedicated hub to discover more of the cars and concepts headed for the German financial hub.

Nissan teases Gripz concept inspired by 240Z rally cars

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

Video URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TthFMKXB28

The rumor about Nissan's crossover concept for the Frankfurt Motor Show wearing the brand's famous Z badge is starting to make a lot more sense thanks to the latest teaser video. Dubbed the Gripz, this CUV takes inspiration from both 240Z rally cars and high-performance, road-going bicycles. So while this model might not be the next Z-car, it's definitely trying to evoke that style.

According to Nissan, the Gripz "explores a new sporty direction for a crossover concept and was conceived to create an innovative new driving sensation." The video appears to briefly show a turbine at work, indicating the engine might be turbocharged. There's also a glimpse at a chronograph-inspired gauge cluster. Unfortunately, the company's latest clip doesn't give away much more than that, but there are some great glimpses of those old-school racers. The Gripz gets a full debut in Germany on Sept. 15. Nissan Gripz Concept makes its global debut in Frankfurt

Designed to build on Nissan's pioneering Crossover leadership, Nissan's Gripz Concept will make its global premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Inspiration for the Nissan Gripz Concept came from the legendary 240Z desert racers as well as the sleek two-wheel world of road cycling. The design explores a new sporty direction for a Crossover concept and was conceived to create an innovative new driving sensation.

If Nissan is on a quest to put together something even more tragic than the IDx, they are on the right track. Kill it with fire

Nissan 370Z successor won't be a crossover

Nissan 370Z successor won't be a crossover

NISMO chief product specialist Hiroshi Tamura has revealed the company will eventually offer a 370Z successor.
Speaking to Motoring, Tamura downplayed rumors that the Gripz concept indicates the next-generation Z will be a crossover. As he explained, he doesn't want the Gripz to replace the 370Z but he hinted the two models could be based on the same platform and share components. The move would help to reduce development costs which is critical as sports cars such as the 370Z have limited appeal and aren't particularly profitable.
Tamura went on to suggest the next-generation Z will be a more mainstream model that will likely be smaller and more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. The car is also expected to be more affordable which could go a long way in increasing its appeal. The current model starts at $29,990 which is significantly more expensive than rivals such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.
Tamura declined to say when the 370Z successor will arrive but sources have told the publication the model is at least two years away.

Nissan will show a Z concept at this year's Tokyo auto show

The production version could get a hybrid powertrain

Nissan Z-car fans, it's time to get excited. Finally. Like, how long has it been since a new Z? Eight years. Car and Driver reports that we'll finally get our first look at the 370Z's successor at this year's Tokyo auto show. The magazine reports Nissan will show a concept for the car that will have a grille inspired by the GT-R and other recent Nissan models, and the production model will be based on the Infiniti Q60 platform.

If this report proves to be true, it means Nissan decided not to make the Z more like the original 240. Nissan design chief Shiro Nakamura suggested a more affordable, smaller sports car concept was under consideration back in 2015.

In addition to the Q60's platform, C/D says the production Z will share both of the Q60's twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 engines. The entry-level version makes 300 horsepower, while the Red Sport's makes 400.The magazine also says that these conventional engines will be joined by a hybrid variant good for 500 horsepower. Auto Express echoes the powertrain line-up with one exception. Instead of the Q60's base twin-turbo V-6, Auto Express suggests the Z would use a 304-horsepower naturally aspirated V6.

This selection of powertrains will position the new Z well against the mid- to high-performance versions of similarly sized sports cars such as the Mustang and Camaro. Although Car and Driver's expected price tag of $30,000 to $50,000 may push it into the realm of more premium machines. If the new Z does offer all three of these engines, it will also be the first to have a number of powertrain options since the Z32 300ZX of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Speaking of which, it will also be interesting to see if Nissan revives the 300Z or 300ZX name to reflect the displacement of these engines.

Car and Driver further mentions that these engines will use dual-clutch transmissions. While nothing is said about the inclusion of manual transmissions, we think it would be foolish not to offer something with a clutch pedal. Whatever the offerings are, we should know sometime in the next two years, since the magazine expects the production model to be released before 2019.

The Nissan Z may not be dead after all

2018 Nissan 370Z

Don't write the obituary for the Nissan Z just yet.
A source at Nissan told Motor Authority on Monday that the current Z car will be updated to meet regulatory guidelines for safety, and while no successor has been confirmed "there's strong interest within the company for the Z to live on." The source requested that their name be withheld because they're not allowed to publicly discuss future products.
Philippe Klein, Nissan Motor Company's chief planning officer, told Automotive News: "The Z is a difficult market...it is rather shrinking worldwide. But we still believe there is a place for the Z and want to keep it alive, and that's what we're working on," noting those plans are for the mid-term.
The Z car hasn't been a priority, even though the current model dates back to 2009. Competitors ranging from the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro to the Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster have all but eclipsed the Z in terms of power, performance, and technology.

Over the years, rumors have circulated regarding the Z's fate including one that the Z would morph into a crossover akin to the Gripz concept, which was shown at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show.
What about beyond this generation? Klein also told Automotive News: "For the long term, there are other considerations. If we do a complete new vehicle what should it be to keep the passion alive? And we're working very seriously on this—how we can keep the Z alive and refreshing and what would be the next generation?"
The future of the Z car is murky, but it's not dead, and there's passion within the company to see the nameplate continue.
Stay tuned for more as the Z story develops.

Looks is about the only thing the Z has going for it. It's continuously outperformed, as they said. They need to either go big or go home with the it. Nobody is going to buy that type of car in this current market of Suv's and muscle cars.
