Default Extending Pay Freeze to Federal Contractors

We received this message at work today:
http://www.energy.gov/news/9917.htm

Washington DC - Following President Obama's recent proposal for a two-year pay freeze for all civilian federal workers, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced a decision to stop salary and bonus pool increases for site and facility management contractor employees, who manage day-to-day operations at certain Department of Energy sites and facilities, including national laboratories.

"As our nation continues to recover from these challenging economic times, households and small businesses across the country are making sacrifices," said Chu. "In this spirit, we are asking our contractor employees, who are doing important research, operations, and environmental cleanup work, to join the federal workforce in playing a part."

Chu added: "Our national labs, the country's crown jewels for leading research and development, will continue to attract and retain the nation's top scientists, and pursue some of the most important discoveries that will lead us into the 21st century."

The freeze at the 28 sites and facilities will be effective January 1, 2011 and is applicable to all facility-wide wage and salary increases. For sites that have already approved and implemented increases, the freeze would begin at the beginning of their next salary increase cycle and also last two years.

The action would affect approximately 75,000 workers.

Too little too late if you ask me. If we are hurting that bad they should not have renewed the tax cuts. How much fucking money would that have made the government? Private business did this shit the wrong way as a knee jerk reaction too, and now what you have are tons of companies running "lean" and making people work harder for the same money. Well thats bullshit too, work more hours for the same pay may save the company money, but its a direct decrease in our take home pay even if we still make the same amount of money. How? Well now you have to work 50 hours instead of 40 and you make the same money as before. Top on that with no pay increase and due to normal inflation you are now making 3-5% less this year than you made the year before...Oh and while they were at it they took away your 401k match, so fuck you in the long run, but work hard for us now...

I don't believe that inflation was that high over the last year.

My rant was more about 2008/2009 when this stuff was running wild..Just a quick search showed a 3.8% rate in 2008 a negative rate in 2009 and a 1.1% rate in 2010.

Our old shop was really low on raises in 2008 and 2009 and tons of employers were slashing 401k match at that point in time. Things are all coming back now, but for some it was a setback that will never get made up which just means lower overall career earnings..

My wife got the email about this today. Basically she gets no COLA increases for the next 2 years. Merit increases are still available for her area. I would have updated this in the thread I started, but i can't find it..
