Some of these neighborhoods probably still have HOAs that require wood shake ... for aesthetics.

Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing to see be challenged in court!

My parents can see it from our house. That's literally right where I wrecked my motorcycle.

They look nice when they are new but are a big fire hazard and look pretty bad as they age.

I would like to see all the HOA's drop the requirement for those shingles.

I'm about 1.5 miles directly east of where the house fires are and our HOA changed the requirements for shingles about 20 years ago. Wood shake is grandfathered in but no longer allowed for new roof install. I'd imagine most HOAs are like that. Our house was built in 84 and I think those houses that burned were probably early 90's so I'd bet they had original wood roofs that needed to be replaced anyways and that's why they caught fire.

We could see the flames of that fire from our office building. Crazy.

Our house is the last house on the block with shake. I would like it gone, but need a good storm to finish it off. Shake is great for long lasting and taking an impact load from hail, but suck for fire and bugs.

House just up the street from me caught fire, I'm a few blocks from the apartments that burned. I hosed down my roof and any trees near my house. My street was like a god damn war zone. Didn't get a whole lot of footy as I was busy taking preventative action.
I'll post pics and vids once my power comes back on.

A buddy of mine texted me about it while I was out in South olathe. I saw the smoke plume on the horizon and the news was saying it was catching other houses on fire so I was kinda panicked. It was very tough getting in my neighborhood because of all the looky loos and LEOs/fire trucks. Once I got home I busted out my hoses from storage and started soaking the roof and any dry vegetation. Good thing too because a house just up the street started going up flames.
Arriving home:

This is terrible.

With that said, I've never understood wood shake shingles.

The house that caught fire up the street from me was composite, there are only a handful of houses in my neighborhood with shake roofs.

Damn. With the amount of embers coming off of the apartment fire though, it makes sense.

Has the apartment fire been mostly contained now? I hadn't looked into any updates today.

Yeah it's mostly just smoldering now. My neighbor I was talking with in the video said she heard and felt a big boom before the fire broke out. Thinking natural gas was involved someway.

Some videos of the site when the fire started. Looks like someone with a welding truck was right there moments before the fire started.

Does that mean someone didn't fire watch 30 minutes after hot work?

The same thing happened in Raleigh last Thursday. A new apartment complex going in downtown just lit up damaging a few complexes around it. Yuuuuge fire! Crazy to see something similar happen in KS. Two massive fire in a week seems a little strange.
