It's Time For Dinozord Power On These Sweet New Character Posters For POWER RANGERS; Plus A New TV Spot

Lionsgate has released five very cool new banner posters for Power Rangers, giving us a great look at each Ranger alongside their respective Dinozord. Plus, we also have a new international TV spot!

In exactly one month, the Power Rangers return to a theater near you.

Following the release of last week's "All-Star" teaser, which will likely serve as the film's final trailer, Lionsgate has released an awesome new set of character posters for each of our five heroes.

This new batch of posters comes to us from an automated chat that is currently available on all of the movie's official social media accounts (via Power Rangers NOW). Fans are encouraged to send any of the official accounts a direct message that will kickstart an automated conversation with one of the Rangers' most trusted allies, Alpha 5, who based on a user's input, will guide you through a somewhat lengthy training simulation and upon completion will reward you with a poster based on the Ranger of your choosing.

Check out the new "Training" posters below:

Plus, here's a new international TV spot, which is set to a very familiar tune:

Full Details For The POWER RANGERS Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Confirm An Updated Theme Song

Lionsgate has officially unveiled the full track list for Brian Tyler's upcoming Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Power Rangers, confirming an all-new version of the original MMPR theme song!

With just under three weeks to go, Lionsgate & Saban Entertainment have released the full set of details for their upcoming Power Rangers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which will feature twenty-eight original compositions from 2x Primetime Emmy-nominee Brian Tyler.

Tyler is a favorite of Marvel Studios, having collaborated with them on the scores for Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He's also well-known for scoring four of the last five Fast & Furious movies. Following Power Rangers, Tyler's upcoming projects include Universal's The Fate of the Furious and Tom Cruise's The Mummy, which are both due out later this year.

The new track list isn't particularly revealing but it does shed some light on how the film may differ from the classic Mighty Morphin TV series, including how the Rangers may now be described as "Those Who Are Worthy" instead of "teenagers with attitude." It also seemingly suggests that we may get to spend a lot more time with the Rangers and their Zords before their final showdown with Rita Repulsa, meaning we may get to see multiple morphing sequences and/or a battle the trailers haven't teased yet.

The album will become available on digital platforms March 24, coinciding with the film's theatrical release, while a physical album will release a few weeks later on April 7. You can currently pre-order the latter version on Amazon.

Check out the full track list, which also confirms that long-rumored updated theme song, below:

1. Power Rangers Theme (4:22)
2. Seek Those Who Are Worthy (2:50)
3. Zordon Awakes (2:15)
4. It’s Morphing Time! (3:21)

Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Goldar Battles The Zords In New POWER RANGERS Image; Details On Controversial Redesign Revealed

Two new images from the upcoming Power Rangers have been released, featuring a detailed look at Goldar taking on the Zords while the movie's director and designer weigh in on his new look...

Josh Wilding | 3/9/2017 Filed Under: "Sci-Fi" Source: Entertainment Weekly

The new designs for the upcoming Power Rangers have generated a lot of discussion in recent months, with Goldar's literal gold makeover proving to be particularly controversial with some fans.

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, production designer Andrew Menzies confirmed that this version won't be as chatty as his small screen counterpart as he wanted to create a kaiju-like beast who would serve as a physical manifestation of Rita Repulsa's evil nature. "Dean and I talked about him being faceless and intimidating and characterless. He’s an extension of Rita that’s unstoppable."

Bizarrely, Menzies revealed that he based Goldar off a chocolate fountain as he has a melting form which is constantly changing. "I think as humans we always search for character in a face, and if it’s always shifting and changing, it becomes scary. If it moved like chocolate and kept flowing, you could never put your finger on it." That's a pretty unique sounding description, but one which makes a little more sense when Power Rangers director Dean Israelite weighs in on this version of the villain.

"There’s something very beautiful about him," he explains. "All of the negative space that’s constantly in Goldar’s design feels very eerie, but on the other hand, he’s a kinetic sculpture."

on the other hand he looks fucking horrible and basing him off a chocolate fountain was a terrible decision.

POWER RANGERS: The Team Heads Underwater In A Cool New Clip; Plus Over 35 New Hi-Res Stills & New Posters

Lionsgate has released a third clip from their Power Rangers reboot featuring an extended look at that cool underwater sequence from the trailer, which pays homage to a classic Zeo scene!

Only two weeks to go until Power Rangers takes the world by storm!

The stars of the piece are currently on the worldwide press tour, which means a slew of outlets have already seen the Dean Israelite-directed reboot and a couple more are expected to see the film tonight, meaning we're only around ten days away from hearing our first real reactions to the film as the embargo lifts on March 20 at 12 pm EST.

Yesterday, Lionsgate (via MTV) debuted the third official clip from the film featuring the young team of heroes, played by Dacre Montgomery (Red), Naomi Scott (Pink), Ludi Lin (Black), RJ Cyler (Blue), and Becky Gomez (Yellow), exploring an underwater passageway, that ultimately drops them right into the Command Center.

Check out the new clip below:

This latest clip does seem to draw some inspiration from a classic Power Rangers Zeo scene where the Rangers discover the new Power Chamber underneath the ruins of their former Command Center. Check out that scene below for comparison's sake and let us know what you think in the usual spot.

‘Power Rangers’ Director Dean Israelite on Updating the Series, Casting Bryan Cranston, and the Post-Credits Scene

-
Saban Entertainment and Lionsgate will debut their big-screen update of Power Rangers on March 24th. In anticipation of the release, I recently sat down with director Dean Israelite for an extended video interview. The filmmaker talked about how he landed the job, designing the costumes and creatures, whose idea it was to cast Bryan Cranston as Zordon, the impact of the test screenings on the finished product, how his first cut was over three hours, how many deleted scenes might be on the Blu-ray, why the Mastodon has 8 legs, how the post-credits scene came together, and much more.
Image via Lionsgate

For those unfamiliar with Power Rangers, the movie focuses on a group of disparate teenagers in the fictional town of Angel Grove who must work together to harness incredible powers in order to defend their town from alien threats. The film stars Ludi Lin as Black Ranger/Zack, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger/Kimberly, RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger/Billy, Becky G as Yellow Ranger/Trini, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger/Jason, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, and Bill Hader as Alpha 5.
Check out what Dean Israelite had to say in the player above and below is a list of everything we talked about followed by the Power Rangers official synopsis.
Dean Israelite:
  • How he has to appeal to the original fan base but also create a movie that will hook new fans.
  • How did he find out they were going to make a Power Rangers movie?
  • How did he get a chance to pitch on it and what was his presentation?
  • Does the final film reflect what he originally pitched?
  • How did they decide on what the suits and costumes would look like?
  • Image via Lionsgate

Whose idea was it to cast Bryan Cranston and what was his reaction when he said yes?
  • Talks about the designs of Zordon.
  • How long was his first cut versus the finished film? Reveals the editor’s assembly which includes literally everything they shot was 3 and a half hour. His first director’s cut was 2 and a half hours.
  • How long was the version he showed to friends and family and test screening audiences? Says it was 2 hours.
  • What was the condition of the film in the first test screening?
  • What did they learn in the first screening that impacted the finished film?
  • Will the Blu-ray have a lot of deleted scenes? Hopes it will have up to 15 scenes.
  • Power Rangers has an after the credits scene. Were they always going to have an after the credits scene and how did they decide where to put it?
  • Easter eggs talk. What should people be looking for in the film?
  • Why does the Mastodon have 8 legs?
  • Talks about the design of the zords.
  • Does he want to take ownership of Power Rangers movies the way Michael Bay runs Transformers movies? Will he do a sequel?
Image via Lionsgate

Here’s the official synopsis for Power Rangers:
SABAN’S POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.

POWER RANGERS: Two Original Cast Members Confirmed To Cameo; Mid-Credits Scene Also Confirmed

Well, it appears that two members of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cast will indeed cameo in the new movie. Plus, we have details on the mid-credits scene and an awesome new TV spot!

With the press tour currently underway, Lionsgate Entertainment has released the production notes for its eagerly awaited Power Rangers reboot and while not particularly spoiler-y, they do inadvertently spoil the cameos of two original Mighty Morphin cast members.

Those cast members being, of course, Jason David Frank and Amy Jo Johnson, who played the original Green and Pink Rangers, respectively. No further details on their roles were given as they are only listed as Cameo Role #1 and Cameo Role #2, which seemingly suggests that they'll be making blink-and-you'll-miss-it type appearances and unsurprisingly, not reprising their classic roles.

It's uncertain why the studio opted not to invite back the full original cast, which also includes Austin St. John, Walter Jones, and David Yost, but Frank's apparent reluctance to share the spotlight with some of his former male castmates over the past few years may have played a factor. Regardless, this is still a cool gesture from Lionsgate and a nod fans of the original series will certainly enjoy come March 24.

On another note, in a recent interview with Collider, director Dean Israelite confirmed that there is indeed a post-credits sequence: "There was always going to be a post-credit thing. The only question was whether it comes 2.5 minutes into the credits, or right at the end. We decided to break (the credits) up and go 2.5 minutes in. It felt correct.” Now, as for whether this mid-credits scene will, as expected, tease Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, CinemaBlend reports that: *SPOILERS* (highlight to reveal) Yes, it will. Their report states that while the scene won't actually feature an actor playing the character, it'll instead see a teacher call out Tommy Oliver's name while taking attendance in detention, setting up his presence in this new Rangers cinematic universe as well as his inevitable introduction in a potential sequel. *END SPOILERS*

Collider's interview also touches on a number of other topics, including the original director's cut, deleted scenes, Easter eggs, and more. Check it out in full HERE.

POWER RANGERS Reviews Are Decidedly Mixed; "Refuses To Fully Embrace The Mystique Of The Power Rangers"

The first batch of reviews for Power Rangers are in and they're fairly mixed, to say the least. There's plenty of fun to be had, especially with Rita Repulsa, but as a whole, it seems to fall just short.

Twenty-four years after their television debut, the (Mighty Morphin) Power Rangers are back in a brand new feature film that promises to reimagine some of your fondest childhood memories and create something for a whole new generation of fans. But, is the new movie worth your time?

The first set of critic's reviews for the Dean Israelite-directed reboot landed online earlier this afternoon and they are a fairly even split of good and bad with most criticism being levied toward the first two more serious acts, rather than at the action-packed, CGI-heavy, finale, which actually seems to have gone over quite well with practically everyone.

The reviews are leaning positive for the most part, but the main concern seems to be that the movie isn't quite sure what it wants to be or who its target audience is as it caters at different points to more mature fans, younger fans, and longtime fans of the original '90s series. It also seems to excel when it chooses to accept its campy origins rather than forge its own unique path. The finale, as mentioned above, is the biggest highlight as the film takes a major tonal shift, heads into daylight, and brings out the Dinozords for an epic battle with Goldar.

Elizabeth Banks is the clear standout amongst the cast, fully embracing the sheer ridiculousness of her evil villainess Rita Repulsa, and many reviews note that her performance may be worth the price of admission alone. Out of the Rangers, it's RJ Cyler, who shines brightest, bringing an extra sense of depth to his portrayal of Billy, the Blue Ranger. Naomi Scott, who plays Kimberly, the Pink Ranger, also receives special mention. As for Bryan Cranston & Bill Hader, their on-screen chemistry as Zordon & Alpha 5, respectively, sounds to be on-point and it also looks like the character development and the core team dynamic between the five Rangers has been handled quite well, leading to a few touching moments scattered throughout the picture, including the movie's final frame.

Additionally, there is a mid-credits scene that you definitely don't want to miss and if this film earns a sequel, should lead to a much bigger and better second chapter.

Check out excerpts from a number of reviews below:

For longtime fans, the newest installment preserves some of the most beloved characteristics of the original franchise, updated to reflect technological advances. The Rangers’ color-coded power suits now benefit from nanoparticle properties and the robotic mecha assault vehicles known as Zords that they pilot take on enhanced battle capabilities, while Rita’s menacing sidekicks the Putties and the gigantic warrior Goldar get more polished, fluid CGI representations. (And yes, the “Go Go Power Rangers” theme song makes a triumphant return.)
This quintet of actors is so empathetic and engaging that they more than hold up the John Hughes end of the movie. And if you’re not seeing this for the acting, then at least you get five brightly-clad heroes driving dinosaur-shaped spaceships that eventually meld into one giant, sword-wielding robot. If that’s what you paid to see, then “Power Rangers” delivers it, dollars to donuts.
Yet it’s all franchise window dressing. It can’t disguise the reality that the characters in “Power Rangers” have all the depth and idiosyncrasy of walking talking robo-teen action figures. The irony is that 25 years ago, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” was launched as superhero diversion “for kids,” and there was a place for it, but we’re so awash in superhero culture that kids no longer need the safe, lame, pandering junior-league version of it. They can just watch “Ant-Man” or the PG-13 “Suicide Squad.” Safe, lame, and pandering have all grown up.
The film is a blast during the few brief moments when it embraces the cartoon craziness that’s made the television show into such a cultural fixture, but it sheepishly backs away from every one of these giddy indulgences as if it’s afraid of getting caught with a hand in the cookie jar; why play the series’ unforgettable theme song (“Go Go, Power Rangers!”) if you’re going to cut it off after just a few bars? If only “Power Rangers” had the courage to put down its mask and work with its audience. It may not be possible to cram a ton of crayons in a butt, but that doesn’t mean we should settle for anonymous photocopies, instead. Grade: C-
But the film’s most blatant camp comes from Banks’ colourfully arch performance as the mighty sorceress Rita Repulsa, a former Power Ranger who wants the crystal for herself. Sarcastic and haughty, Rita walks through the film as if she knows that Power Rangers is third-rate Hollywood product, deciding that she might as well have a little fun. Good triumphs over evil on screen, but for the audience, her villain is the clear victor against her overmatched, inexperienced co-stars.
As someone with no strong feelings for the Power Rangers franchise (I hated it as a kid and came to appreciate its charms as a parent), this is an interesting attempt to craft a grounded and character-driven adaptation, one that successfully blends genre with larger-than-life superhero spectacle. And if you might find it absurd to have a somber and violent Power Rangers movie, then we should note that it can coexist with the 800-plus episodes of the more kid-friendly televised variation. At its best, Power Rangers is a throwback to the likes of Masters of the Universe and the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. It’s from a time when getting a darker, more serious big-budget feature based on your favorite kid-friendly property, one that felt like a real film, was a rare and splendid thing.
There’s an admirable commitment to absurdity, yet it belies the thoughtful coming-of-age journey for the five teens up until they hit “morphin time." The first half boasts a realism reminiscent of Chronicle in how youngsters deal with the responsibility of having nascent superpowers, and John Gatins’ screenplay creates surprisingly touching relationships between the kids. There’s even a discrepancy in color palette — with the initially dark and muted tones moving to a rainbow of vibrancy as the film turns toward the silly — but the film lacks a certain confidence by not taking either tack.
Power Rangers is a series of bad decisions broken up with decent moments of adorable interactions between the Rangers and Banks’ Repulsa, but those moments are few and far in-between. Power Rangers had the chance to save itself from becoming the mess that it is, but Israelite needed to take the movie in a single, specific direction. It could have been a dumb, ridiculous movie in the same vein as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers or an origin story like Iron Man, but it ends up being none of those things.
The only Ranger who makes much of an impression is RJ Cyler as Billy. Cyler, first seen in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, lends a much-needed twitchy energy to the po-faced profundity and will probably be the one actor to escape this franchise unscathed. It’s never a good sign when your movie’s best performance belongs to a guy voicing a floating CGI head. This is yet another conspicuous movie cameo from Bryan Cranston, after his 10 minutes of screen time in the last Godzilla film. He pops up long enough to imbue the picture with some class, and then he vanishes. At this rate, he’ll be the new Michael Caine — making this Cranston’s version of Beyond the Poseidon Adventure.
There’s a lot to enjoy in Power Rangers. The young kids cast are fun and adhere to the original camp but give it a Hollywood glamor feel. The adults are all stunning. Bill Hader as Alpha 5 steals nearly every scene he’s in. But, the overall final product is another Transformers, adequate but not stunning.
But once you get past all that the kids finally put on the costumes and jump into action. At this point, the audience I saw the film with cheered, because the movie has finally delivered on its promise. It’s the Power Rangers! Zords! Rita! Goldar! Fighting! But something is off... literally. The kids don’t wear their iconic masks, so we can see their faces almost the whole time. Even in this huge, ludicrous action scene, the film refuses to fully embrace the mystique of the Power Rangers.
If you enjoy superhero films at all, this is a must watch. Even if you didn’t watch Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Saban’s Power Rangers is a hilarious film. I see myself watching this several times over the next few months.
Power Rangers is probably not going to go down as the most beloved superhero movie of 2017, but it's still a good origin story that sets up a potentially even better franchise. It doesn't matter if you're a longtime fan or a complete newcomer; it's morphin time.
For what it is, POWER RANGERS is fine, with PROJECT ALMANAC’s Dean Israelite having made a good-looking film, although it’s clear the budget was saved for the big-finale, with much of the film being devoted to endless training montages. A friend described it best when he said it felt like a $100 million CW pilot, but kids and young teens will likely get a kick out of it. It’s not especially mind-numbing, although it doesn’t really have enough substance to sustain a major franchise, unless they really scrap the old TV show mythology and tell their own story. Rating: 6 out of 10

POWER RANGERS: Haim Saban Reveals He Has A 6-Movie Arc Mapped Out; *SPOILER* Revealed!

Following last night's morphinomenal Power Rangers premiere, we have new comments from both producer Haim Saban & Red Ranger actor Dacre Montgomery regarding the film's potential sequels.

Superhero movies are typically known to have a lot riding on them, and never has that been more the case than with Lionsgate's Power Rangers. If the reboot succeeds, prepare for the dawn of an entirely new age of superhero films centered around the colorful quintet, however, if it crashes and burns, it'd be hard to imagine that fans would get another opportunity to see Angel Grove's finest suit up again, at least, on the big screen for the foreseeable future.

Regardless of any future implications, the film is looking like it might actually have a pretty solid opening weekend as buzz has been trending positive over the past week, which should bode well for its box office success. At the moment, it's tracking for a modest $30M-$40M debut, behind Disney's Beauty and the Beast, but could always go higher if word-of-mouth continues to trend upward.

With Power Rangers being the talk of the town, Variety recently caught up with Rangers co-creator/producer Haim Saban, who was honored, ahead of yesterday's premiere, with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and learned that if the Dean Israelite-directed film is a big hit this weekend, he has a rough plan for the franchise's potentially bright future. "We already have a six-movie story arc."

He doesn't provide any hints at what that lengthy arc might entail, but considering the over twenty years of source material to mine from, there are certainly several different avenues the franchise could explore from here, although the safest bet would be following the über-popular Zordon-era, which encompassed Mighty Morphin, Zeo, Turbo, and In Space. It's also been strongly hinted by numerous sources that a potential sequel would likely adapt the five-part "Green With Evil."

Saban expanded on his comments by briefly touching on modernizing the hit '90s series for an entirely new generation of youngsters that have become accustomed to the much higher profile Marvel & DC superhero offerings, amongst other things. “But today’s young audience is much more sophisticated, Think about movies like ‘Jungle Book’ and ‘Arrival.’ The effects are mind-boggling. So does the young audience expect more? You bet they do — and they will have it.” After that promise, he expressed his confidence in the audience to accept this new iteration of heroes and that their support will be rewarded. “If this film is as successful as I hope on March 24, on March 25 we’ll have the first story meeting for Movie No. 2.

Also, in a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, star Dacre Montgomery, who plays Jason, the Red Ranger, also touched on a potential second chapter in the new saga and like Saban hinted at more than just one. "I would love to think there will be more films. I guess we're going to see how we do at the box office and play it from there. But I think everybody else is definitely treating this as an origins film, the first of a few." Let's hope it all pans out.

POWER RANGERS: New International Posters & Banners Spotlight The Dinozords While Adding An Unexpected Twist

Lionsgate's Power Rangers arrives in China this week and ahead of its Friday debut, new international banners and posters have been released, spotlighting the individual Dinozords. Come take a look!

Despite having the ninth best domestic opening weekend of the year ($40.3M) and a extremely warm reception from fans, the competition from Disney's Beauty and the Beast proved to be a little too much for the Power Rangers as the film's domestic box office has essentially topped out around $84.7 million with its worldwide haul currently at $135.4 million, which isn't exactly anywhere near ideal for a potential sequel.

Fortunately, there are still two major international markets left on the theatrical release calendar in China and in Japan, which could considerably alter the fate of the Dean Israelite-directed feature. The China release is this weekend (followed by Japan on July 15), so we should have a much better idea on whether or not a second adventure with Zordon's chosen five is still on the table by Monday at the latest, if not sooner.

While you wait, a handful of new Chinese character posters and banners for the film have been released along with a new theaterical one-sheet and some of the new artwork comes with an unexpected wrinkle.

The new batch of character banners showcase each individual Ranger in front of their respective Dinozord, but it looks as though the dinosaurs have been swapped out for local legendary beasts as the Red Ranger is pictured with a Dragon, the Yellow Ranger is pictured with a Tiger, the Blue Ranger is spotted with a Qilin, the Pink Ranger is pictured with a Phoenix, and the Black Ranger is pictured with both a Tortoise and a Snake.

Check out everything below:

POWER RANGERS Reboot Sequel Hopes Fading After A Disappointing Debut In China

The strong fan reception hasn't exactly translated to worldwide box office success and after a disappointing Chinese debut, things are really not looking good for a potential Power Rangers sequel...

Power Rangers proved to be quite the pleasant surprise this past March, and actually had a pretty morphinomenal $40.3 million opening weekend in the United States, which had the future of the franchise looking pretty bright. However, unfortunately the legs it needed just weren't there and it essentially topped out around $85 million domestic. Its overseas numbers proved to be the bigger disappointment as it managed to rake in only around $54 million, bringing its worldwide sum to just over $138.8 million worldwide.

With those numbers, there was a lot riding on its recent release in China, which was essentiatlly described as a make or break moment for the Dean Israelite-directed film, and unfortunately, things didn't exactly go according to plan as it opened in fifth place with an unspectacular $4.39 million from the Middle Kingdom. The Aamir Khan-led Indian sports drama Dangal took the top spot with $32.5 million, followed by Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 with $15.8 million, Warner Bros.' King Arthur: Legend of the Sword opened in third with $6.05 million, and the local production Dealer Healer came in fourth with $4.42 million.

There's still a small possibility that Lionsgate could greenlight a potential lower-budget sequel if they believed a Green Ranger storyline would be a bigger box office draw and if the home video sales combined with its upcoming release in Japan (07/15) proves to be stronger than expected, but at the moment, it's looking increasingly unlikely that we'll ever see a second chapter with this iteration of the colorful heroes from Angel Grove.

Lionsgate, in an effort to mitigate their risk, was only on the hook for around 25% of the total $100 million production budget including P&A (as per Deadline), so the studio, despite the film losing money overall, may actually turn a small profit when all is said and done as they were only responsible for theatrical and home media distribution in the U.S. while international rights were sold off long ago.

So, what do you guys think? Disappointed? Sound off with your thoughts below!
