I'm not sure the unit will pay for itself but I'm positive it will cut electric bills down quite a lot since the unit is so old. I looked up a chart online by year and it's probably a 6-7 seer based on manufacture date. Lol

As far as rebates go, I don't think I'll be able to get much since i claimed some new windows and insulation on our old house but I may be able to. I think KCPLs rebates are all on the MO side but I'm sure whatever company I use will know that well.

Speaking of which, anyone have some company recommendations?
I have about 3800 sq ft of space. My AC is 1.5 years old. It's a 16.5 seer, 4.5 tonn unit. I set the AC at 72 when we're home and 77 when we're away.

My electric during the summer has never topped $180.

ive gotten two quotes so far
Guy 1 is a full time tech at a commercial company who is able to do weekend aide work. He's got a 3.5 ton at $2850 installed.
Top Notch quoted $3900 for a 4 ton installed.

I was told by guy 1 that the system wouldn't be compatible with a 4 ton yet Top Notch quoted for a 4 and said everything is compatible. Now I'm not sure who is right..does anyone know enough to weigh in?

Make sure you get the non R-22 system. Don't drop that money to have to update it in 3/4 years.

Also. I got quotes for a 3.5 ton 14 SEER carrier AC and a Carrier 80k BTU 95% ECM fan furnace both installed for $3800.

I think I figured out the mismatch. After doing some reading you have to make sure your blower is powerful enough and moves enough air to keep the larger coils on a larger tonnage unit above 32* so that they don't freeze.

I looked at the specs for my furnace unit and in the section about the indoor blower it says "Tons of add on cooling: 3-4" so I'm pretty sure the 4 ton unit will be fine.

If anyone cares to look the model is ML180UH090P48B
http://www.completeheating.ca/images...noxML180UH.pdf

@Impaul, the quoted AC unit uses R-410A refrigerant. It's Lennox equipment, which I'd like to stay with since the furnace is all Lennox. I've read some horror stories of mixing and matching manufacturers. Where did you get your quote done, and do they pull permits? From what I can tell the equipment is all pretty much the same price for all the install companies, so the differences in quotes are basically for labor. I'm OK with paying more for labor since Top Notch came recommended from my city inspector friend for install quality and always pulls permits.

It came from Able Air. I have HMS warranty and my coil went to shit. So it's $700 to fix, but they said if I wanted to do a new system it would be $3800 with $700 credit for coil,

I don't need a new system but I don't want a heat pump. And it still uses R-22. It's pretty efficient and only 13 years old. I think I'm just going to do the coil for now. My unit is very undersized for the house and the upstairs gets really hot. I also can't use a good hepa filter as my unit isn't strong enough to blow through one. I have pros and cons of a new system. I'm still debating.

I went ahead and booked with Top Notch after confirming with them that the Lennox specs are correct and the blower is correctly sized to handle a 4 ton unit. Just more comfortable having a reputable and highly recommended company install the equipment. Pulling permits is key, keeps companies honest.

In addition, with the guys doing it on the side, I'd have to pay cash (which is fine, but would require pulling some money from savings, which I'd like to avoid since we use it only for emergencies). Top Notch partners with Wells Fargo to do a 12 months same as cash option which at $325 we can fit into our monthly budget without any trouble. I'll just cancel the credit card it goes on once it's paid off. Not sure anybody cares about this aspect of financing it since everyone's situation is different but I thought I'd include that in case folks read the thread in the future.

Oh and another thing I should write down just for future reference is the way I calculated payback over time. You can get a long term usage report on KCPL, so I averaged my kWh out from October - March (670 kWh) vs. summer months, May-Sept (1575 kWh) so the difference in electricity usage is 905 kWh average attributable to the A/C unit. From there you just plug in the kWh cost (.10829/kWh in summer) vs. efficiency gains which I got from this site: http://www.horizonservicesinc.com/re...e-energy-costs and do your calculations. My best guess (confirmed by Top Notch) is that my unit was running at functionally 6 SEER. So, I'll save about $50/month or $250 a year which means 15 years for full recuperation of costs on the install.

Does KCPL or MGE offer rebates. I thought they do.

Top Notch did a great job with the install and answered all my annoying questions (they should probably have charged me extra lol). Would definitely recommend them. Hopefully I'll have much lower power bills this summer.

For what it's worth. Majority of all these units are made in the same factory overseas. Concorde is just a rebranded Lennox, same with other brands. They just charge less for the unknown name. The only brands such as the carrier infinity line and others like those extreme high end up units cost a lot up front. Very efficient but the maintenance costs that they need are not worth the cost to put them in a house unless it's a big house. Standard size houses with 2 floors are made for the cheaper units. If you have 3 or 4 floors and need several zones systems for maximum efficiency, then the high end units become worth it.

Why do I know this? Well, I work with a lot of hvac guys all the time and know a few guys who own hvac companies and they all say the same thing. They will say that they hear from customers that they want a Lennox because of the name but will explain to people how they can save and get the same thing out of Lennox off brand unit as they have the same parts and at interchangeable but that some people are just too stubborn to understand.

Current setup is 3 ton 8 seer heat pump unit and an 80% single stage 70k btu furnsce.

Best quote is $7.5k after kcpl and mge rebates, for a 16 seer 3.5 ton AC, 96% two stage variable speed 100k btu furnace, media filter and humidifier.

Trane XR 16 with S9V2 furnace. Anyone have experience with trane?

^^ "You can't stop a TRANE?"

They are fine, about as good as any you can find. The important thing is the installer, are they any good.

Also, maintain it, the condenser, keep clean and don't let debris pile up around etc.

Yeah I've heard it's all about installer. They are a good company up north, very reputable, gave me a breakdown of install. New pipe, wiring, concrete pad, breaker box, thermostat install and setup.

No experience with Trane obviously but 7.5k seems like a great price for all of that. What company? Ask them "Do I need to get a permit or anything like that?" And play dumb. If they tell you you don't need a permit, run away. Like I said awhile back in this thread, a personal friend was a city inspector for many years and on a personal basis said he consistently saw quality work from Top Notch, United and One Hour.

It's from Buckner's Heating and Cooling. The price is low because the rebates from KCPL, MGE, Trane total over $1k.

My system works, and the guy from Buckner's fixed my dampers while there, so it's much better upstairs. I think we can make it another year or two before replacing.

Ha, I was quoted 16, yes, $16,000 to do a 15 SEER Lennox 2 ton Unit installed by Bob Hamilton. Figured, why not give BOB a call. Boy was I wrong. Having AC issues at the moment and hell bent on replacing the entire system. Just not for 16,000 from Bob Hamilton.
