Default Uber Driver

Is driving for Uber worth it?

I have a full time job working on semi's but want extra cash on the side.

I have a 2005 xB

I was just wondering if signing up and doing this a few hours a week would be worth it..

Any info would help

Might want to check their vehicle requirements. Yours may be too old.

I took it a handful of times downtown between the 16-18th of this month. All of the drivers seemed to think it was a good deal. I asked how they liked it and most said the money was good for how little they worked and only one said they had a bad experience (picking up a real drunk couple at a strip club that was fighting).

Every cent of $ has been going to juniors college fund. If I do it for another 12 months college will be taken care of.

Given over 900 rides and Only one person has come close to puking in the car.
Just kicked them out.
When people look like they have been drinking I just warn them that if they puke Uber charges a $200 fee. (which they do)

The Uber car I drive with is a 2k Junker than I use in case my main cars need maintenance. Driving Uber with a Nice car would be dumb.

Don't they pay more for their non X service...so if you have a nice car you can be paid much better for it? I'm guessing the demand is MUCH lower for that though.

Ford C-max is a great option IMO. They have california buy back c-max's at Zeck ford. They'd had the recalls performed, super low miles, good MPG and you get a pretty nice new car out of the deal that uber could pay off fairly quickly.

http://www.zeckford.com/used/Ford/20...6b1105a19f.htm

15k miles, advertised for under 13k. I'm betting you could get it down to 11.

You can get paid more for a nicer car using uberX. I tried to use it, but none were available in the area (crown center) when I was looking. If there is more than two of us though, I will almost always use XL - still a tougher find, but usually was able to get it in 3-5 minutes. It is a buck or two more (still cheap) but you get an SUV. With it not being the dirt cheap option (which will likely be used by more irresponsible people), it may be okay to use a nicer car.

Good Advise. I think I gonna do it. But only on weekends and at night during the week.

I'm waiting right now for the background check to go thru.
Estimated time is 2 days. Plus I get to see it and save it if I want.

I know two people that drive for Uber.

From what I hear, it isn't going to give you a livable wage, but it definitely will give you a good amount of cash in your pocket if you are active during peaky times, on the side. Those peak times are usually late Friday and Saturday, during sports events, etc. that people are getting drunk, basically.

EDIT: To elaborate a bit, one of those people basically uses Uber to make the payments on their new car. The other one is between jobs, and it give him enough money to live, but really not much more.

I'd love to do it exaclty at those peak times. Got nothing to do and I don't really go out that much anymore to the bars and whatnot.

Alright guys.. I drove for Uber for the 1st time last night.

Made $120. Had about 17 rides.
Most rides were short. To PNL and Westport.
I drove from 5:30 till 1:00. My phone was still going off right before I went offline.

I'm sure I would of made more money the later I stayed but was getting tired.

I'm going to try again today since the Royals are playing. Hopefully I can make the same $$

When you say you made 120 is that after uber costs and mileage expenses? Seems a little low for 17 rides.

That is after uber costs. And I only used a half a tank of gas. There is good money when people want to go from suburbs to the city. But it's hard to find those. You just gotta be at the right place at the right time.

$120 - $20 (1/2 tank) = $100

$100 / 7hrs = $14.28/hr.

or

$100 / 17 rides = $5.88/ride.

Curious - Uber says tipping isn't necessary but how many people tipped you?

I just used Uber for the first time last weekend in Sacramento. I tipped him because he was awesome. RelayRides emailed me the wrong address to pick up my rental, but he was really cool about it and figured out where to take us after talking to the RelayRides renter. He's UberXL (Escalade) but also accepts UberX requests so that worked out well too.

You're lucky. Mine took almost a month and I have a clean background. Good to know I am not on the terrorist watch list, though.

It's good if you do it part time and during the peak hours. I made around $20 per hour gross on Friday night.

Advice: Don't drive during the Royals games. Waste of your time. Before or after if the WS is going on.

I also had two people tip me on Friday. The first I told it wasn't necessary and then she said "too late". They really emphasize the tipping not being necessary in their on boarding video but that you can accept if they insist. Don't want to insult them and America's ridiculous tipping culture hasn't sufficiently changed yet.

That said, if a driver ever asks for or implies a tip is necessary report their asses.

Something to keep in mind is that the mileage can be deducted as a business expense. The standard deduction is the one most should use.

My Mom Just bought a white C-Max from Zeck about 3 months ago and it was a California buy back, Thought this was the same one but hers has 26k on it and pick it up for 12k. She has been getting around 43MPG. I am kind of in love with it. It would be perfect for Uber.

I think the fares would have to be really high, even for short trips to be "worth it". the congestion will likely kill the number of rides due to traffic being crazy.
