Default need help wife wants camera

ok, not sure if to post here or in AAG, but looking at a decent SLR camera.. I am a old Nikon guy and wife is Canon, so arguing there.. she has picked a few to look at but want to get your opinions.. want a decent one, but not over the top as mostly will be used for family/facebook events..LOL couple have 2 lenses

Make Model Lens 1 Lens 2 MPEx Cost
NIKON D5100 18-55 16.2 $800.00
NIKON D5200 18-55 24.1 $514.00 (refub)
NIKON D5200 18-55 24.1 $696
CANON T5i 18-55 75-300 18 $799.00
NIKON D3200 18-55 55-200 24.2 $526.95
CANON T5i 18-55 $750

or if you have any other ideas ? as you can see price range varies, I do not remember what Canon we use at Church but it was in the 3K range..at the time when they bought it.. to be honest I was not impressed with the lens movement on the Canon for that price, we have also looked target/best buy etc.. but before busting out this kind of money, using it for both video and stills, portrait and landscape, little bit of everything, want some advice..

thanks !

(edit) the formatting did not take, but two have two lenses and I listed them by lense and megapix

You might be a good candidate for a mirror less slr. Compact size and the Sony ones have the same sensor as the entry DSLRs. I have had one of these NEX for a couple of years now and love it. Everything I wanted, changeable lenses and super easy to carry all day. I can even bring it in my computer bag on work trips and not mind the added weight.

I love my Canon 7D... But it depends on how much she has used a Canon. To me, learning to use a Nikon would be like learning a different language.

I am ASSuming by your phrasing that the camera is just for her, and not a "shared" item.

If you are an old NIkon guy then get a Nikon because your old lenses will work with her new camera.

The ranges will be off (18-55 wont be 18-55 from the old camera), but they will fit.

Also something to take into consideration - How much control is she going to want over the finished project?

If she wants to control the finished outcome, she might want something that can shoot in RAW. If she is okay with the camera determining what the final settings should be, then it's okay if it only allows for .jpeg. Personally, I like shooting RAW since it allows me a little more room for error with lighting. .jpeg isn't as forgiving when your exposure is off... I've actually completely changed the look of the "time of day" with it as well...

yes, we have used a higher end Canon before and shot in RAW, but also a lot more expensive "professional" camera. so we want that feature as well as video.. I think I am torn between a VR lenses option or non VR lens.. my pics always come out a little shaky when not using a tripod to "get the action" so this may be a good feature.

Really depends. Some non VR lens are sharper than the VR. Also if you are using a tripod you normally want to turn off the VR anyway. Just up the shutter speed to reduce camera shake.

I would buy a used body and invest in a better lens than the kit 18-55
