Default Picked up a DJI Phantom FC40

Well, I finally picked up another DJI product. I had recently purchased a DJI Phantom 2 Vision. I ended up sending it back because it was was too much money for an expremely limited fly camera system. I ended up taking a step backward and got an FC40 to get my feet wet with a full size (if you can call it that) quadcopter that has an onboard wifi camera to fly FPV. So far it has been awesome and once I gain a little confidence that I'm not going to smash it into a tree I will be adding a gimbal for my gopro to do a little hobby aerial filming. I will likely make the move up to an f550 once I have the need for a 'non-toy' unit but for now, this thing rocks.

The FC40 is very limited right out of the box. It's flight control is on 5.8 GHz instead of the more typical 2.4 Ghz but it does that to free up the 2.4 band for the wifi camera used for FPV. All that said, the flight control is only good for about 500 meters but the FPV is only good for 100 meters...perfect line of sight, otherwise it drops out sooner.

I knew this going in however I wanted a starter quad that I could get the hang of with a good amount of gear on it. As mine sits it's 3.2 pounds which is way overloaded for its props but I am learning on it with every flight. With the prop guards on it, it's very forgiving. Having it tip over on a landing or bumping something while practicing flight while the craft is facing you (controls are then backwards), there is no real worry about damaging anything too seriously unless you slam it into something.

Once I feel comfortable flinging it around I will either step up to an F550 which are generally way more stable in the wind than a phantom. The only other think I would like is the TBS Discovery and those are geared more toward long range FPV. It all depends on what you would use it for. I want the 550 to film my work projects nice and slow with super smooth video. I want the TBS to go ripping around and fly a good long ways and explore things I normally wouldn't on foot.

All that said, I will keep my FC40 as a toy for just messing around or even as a high risk area video rig. If I want to film something where there is a high probability of not being able to retrieve it if it goes down then the FC40 with a cheap gimbal and gopro will be the ticket.

Cheers!

Edit:
Current FC40 build:

Crappy GoPro H2 video still:

Sent it up last night until my 3.8 cell voltage alarm went off. Barely made it back down. Weighs way too much.

Edit Edit.
Short video playing around in the house. At least the wife approves!
Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

Once I drop the heavy gopro case in favor of a cheap light gimbal, ditch the prop guards and put my 9.5" P2V props back on, it will actually fly about 12 minutes on two 2200 lipos. I get about 7 minutes in its current asthmatic fat kid setup now.
