Default Cord Cutting Setups

I know some of us have shared our setups in the past but I thought I'd make a thread where we could share, discuss issues, help solve each others problems etc. I will start.

I recently proceeded with cutting the cord, cancelling my 10 yr sub to DirecTV. My first issue was wanting live tv for news, local sports, etc. I attempted an external antenna since I already had wiring going out there. However due to distance of my cable runs and number of splits (6), I was unable to get a strong enough signal to all the TVs in the house. I also could only pick up 2 of the major networks at best. I attempted two different antennas that were consumer grade and installed a pre-amp on the line.

So for live TV I went with Muho Leaf 50 Indoor antennas. They are paper thin and I was able to tuck them behind all my wall mounted televisions. They work like a champ and I get get all 4 major networks, plus pretty much everything else that broadcasts OTA in the KC metro. The antennas go for $50 a piece. Currently I have two installed.

Next up I wanted to be able to watch the shows that I typically recorded on my DTV DVR. I had an existing Plex Server, but it was running on my laptop which limited it. So I nabbed an HP DL 380 G5 for $100. It has two quad core 2.67Ghz Xeon processors, 32GB of DDR RAM, and a 72 GB SSD in it. I slapped a 250GB SSD in it ($100), and hung a 4TB external off of one of the USB 3 interfaces ($100).

Next I put Windows Server 2012 R2 on the bare metal, installed on the 72GB drive. I also installed Plex Server on this drive. I configured all the Plex DB and Transcoding to happen on the 250GB SSD.

I then installed VMWare Workstation and built a VM on the 250GB SSD. I installed Windows 7 on it. I configured the VM to run on my VPN (ExpressVPN ($120 annual sub). I also installed Jackett on it as a service (Jackett is a proxy for Sonarr that handles indexers). I installed Sonarr to manage all the television shows I want. Finally I installed qBittorrent as my downloader. The files are saved on the 4TB external where Plex serves them up.

It's a pretty slick setup that is working like a champ. On my Google Fiber I get about 900 both directions. The server has a Passmark CPU score of about 7000, so for as old as it is, it can transcode about 3 1080p streams simultaneously. Of course in my home it's almost all direct play, so the only transcoding it performs is typically for friends that have access to my Plex server.

Nice! I have somewhat similar setup, albeit much more simplistic. I have a HD antenna plugged into my TV and I use an old Mac Mini with a 2tb hard drive plugged into it to stream whatever I want (Netflix, 'legal' sports streams, porn, you name it!) and have the hard drive to all of the content I have saved over the years or downloads of movies, music, etc. plugged into my Google Fiber router. I don't torrent anymore, though. I use streaming sites for the most part.

Honestly, I don't miss anything about cable besides the ability to stream certain shows RIGHT as they're airing, but even then.. it has been so long for me living like this, I don't really care too much about waiting until the next day. Hell, my life gets so busy, it's usually a few days after the show airs before I actually watch it anyways, so it is more convenient sometimes!

Bedroom: Nexus player w/ Kodi and plugins ( local tv with digital antenna)

Living room: TV with digital antenna and pc hooked up and kodi setup / netflix

2nd bedroom: nothing tv setup, just guest room

Office: Surface Pro with TV connected as 2nd monitor running netflix and Kodi.
Media server with all content I have gathered over the years shared. I just pull everything over SMB.

use to mess with Sonarr and Couchpotato, and decided to just stream tv from kodi to reduce storage overhead.

oh and a small tv on the wall in the garage with a chromecast I can cast too if im out working in the garage or yard.

I have cable still, but I'm starting to use Kodi on FireTV and FireSticks. Popular shows aren't a huge issue. My problem is getting all teh car shows on Velocity and Spike. They may not be great, but I'm a gear head and like to watch that stuff.

KellyRX8 are you using a base build of Kodi or creating your own?
