2020 Toyota Supra: Good Enough To Make You Overlook The 718 Cayman?

The fifth-gen Supra has been a long time coming. It wouldn’t be a hyperbole to say that it’s been one of the most eagerly anticipated new cars in recent memory, yet, when it finally arrived, it kinda split opinions.
!–more–>

Some applauded Toyota for resurrecting the iconic nameplate that sticks to the same recipe that made its predecessor a legend, namely the turbocharged inline-six engine, unique styling and rear-wheel drive.

Others, though, took issue with the fact that it was co-developed with BMW. And its true that German DNA can be found in the chassis, engine and interior, even though the Japanese insist that, apart from certain parameters that were jointly agreed upon early on and some hardware, the 2020 Supra and the new Z4 have little in common.

The new Supra and Z4 may share many things between them, but Toyota actually tuned the components independently from BMW, and during the final leg of the journey, engineers from both companies lost touch altogether.

Thus, the Japanese sports cars handles differently than its German counterpart, with a well-balanced chassis and lots of grip in corners, while also allowing users to put that rear end out quite easily. Moreover, it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to performance either, with the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) sprint being dispatched in 4.1 seconds, courtesy of the 3.0-liter inline-six that pumps out 335 HP (340 PS / 250 kW) and 365 lb-ft (495 Nm) of torque – according to Toyota, at least, because so far independent users have pointed out that it actually is be more potent than what the specs would have us believe.

Getting the 2020 Supra in the United States will drain almost $50,000 from your bank account for the base version, and $53,990 for the 3.0 Premium grade. As for the Launch Edition, put to the test by CNET’s RoadShow in the video posted below, it can be had from $55,250 and adds a bunch of visual and technical upgrades.

The question is, should you choose it over an entry-level Porsche 718 Cayman that, at $$56,900, is too close for comfort and sports a more prestigious badge? That’s for you to decide, and the following review could help you do just that.

Supra Engineer: Should We Prioritize Manual Gearbox Or More Power?

But can we have both?

By now, you would have already read and watched a ton of content about the Toyota Supra. From how much power it actually makes, to how much the top spec variant can cost, the Supra has heralded the return of the halo car from Toyota, and, more importantly, precedent has been set for the direction of performance cars from the Japanese manufacturer moving forward; they will come.

n a quick talk with the Supra's chief engineer, automotive website Autoindustriya, was able to find out a few more interesting things about the future of the Toyota Supra. Toyota invited a handful of automotive media to a regional drive of the GR version of the Supra at Sportsland Sugo in Japan, and Tetsuya Tada was asked a very good question: “Why doesn't the Supra, given its name, come with the more powerful BMW S58 engine and when can we expect a Supra with a manual gearbox?”

For those who don't know, the S58 is the spiritual successor to the famed S55, and is based on the B58. In its most powerful tune, the turbocharged 3.0-liter six cylinder pushes slightly past 500 horsepower, making it the engine of choice for BMW M cars for the better part of the future. The manual transmission question is a no-brainer; a purist choice. Tada was quick to reply, basically saying, "Which one would you choose to give a higher priority?"
Apparently, Tada goes on by saying that the Supra at its current state is the initial offering, and every year, the sportscar will get upgrades. With upgrades, there is an order in which new things can be introduced, and the only question is which one goes first.

So, what will it be? A more powerful engine, or a sweet manual transmission? I don't think we can have both, though. One thing's for sure, the Toyota Supra could be the start of a long lifespan for the brand's halo car, with the promise of getting better with each year.

I'm not trying to be a joy-kill but if BMW's with the same powertrain have hit these HP benchmarks already then why is it such news that the same engine in the Supra is hitting the same numbers or going as fast as it is?

If GM brought back the Firebird and built it on the current Camaro platform I would logically expect it to perform the same as the Camaro and for the engine to hit the numbers the engine has already hit...

These kinds of stories interest me more, with a new or highly revised powertrain.

2020 Toyota Supra Goes For Top Speed Run, Does 163 MPH

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

Video URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNPX0haMpXs

Tested in a semi-controlled environment.

Top speed runs are always tricky to do without renting out a drag strip or an airport runway. Of course, doing it on an unrestricted stretch of the Autobahn is possible, but the number of vehicles and other variables don't make it any safer. Oh, and the Autobahn idea is completely out of the question if you don't live in Europe. But if you're as lucky as YouTube automotive sensation TheStradman, you have access to an undisclosed dry lake bed in Utah to go as fast as you want on; the only thing stopping you is running out of usable space.

In the video above, you'll see his one month old 2020 Toyota Supra taken out to his favorite proving ground. We've cut to the top speed run itself so you don't have to watch the whole thing, but you're free to watch the video in its entirety to get an idea on what kind of cars he has and for any garage updates. The dry lake bed that TheStradman uses isn't like the Bonneville Salt Flats; there's no salt concentration on the lake bed and he goes on by saying that he wouldn't drive his new Supra in that environment to begin with. He's already clocked in about 6,000 miles on his Supra, and the initial goal was to see if it could hit 170 miles per hour during his runs.

The 335 horsepower turbocharged in-line 6 cylinder motor needs to get the Supra to top speed within two miles, as that's how much usable space there is for the car to run on. His first run had the Supra at just 145 miles per hour, prompting a second attempt in which the car was able to hit 163 miles per hour as indicated on the speedometer. I guess he found a way past that electronic limiter, eh?

Toyota Supra Hybrid Is Not Going To Happen

It’s a hard no from the chief engineer.

Earlier this year, Toyota announced it’d electrify every model by 2025. That revived some hope of a hybrid version of the Toyota Supra after the Japanese automaker said last year a hybrid powertrain had already been ruled out. Now, though, it appears Tetsuya Tada, Supra Chief Engineer, has put the final nail in the Supra’s hybrid coffin. He told Motoring.com.au that he said “no” not only to a hybrid Supra but to a lot of other ideas, as well.

According to Tetsuya Tada, Toyota marketing had asked him to develop a Supra hybrid, to which he replied, “no.” The reasoning? Not only are there technical limitations – such as ample space for the additional powertrain components and the effect of their weight on the car’s performance – Tetsuya Tada said the sound and smell of the gasoline engine feels more like a sports car. But he is open to the idea under certain conditions – if hybrid powertrain weight and size improves.

He also told the Australian publication that hybridizing the Supra would be “for the new generation engineers.” He said something similar in May when asked about the A100 Supra and the form it’d take, saying then that he’s confident he’d be retired by the time the A100 launched. In the Motoring interview, Tetsuya Tada also said he didn’t believe a market for a convertible Supra existed, and that a manual Supra would depend on demand.

If Toyota keeps its plan to add some form of electrification to every model by 2025, then either the company will make an exception for the Supra and its gasoline-only engine, or the company will no longer offer the sports car after that year. Toyota has five years to decide what to do with the Supra or whatever product succeeds it. It gives the company time to develop a new powertrain, explore a successor that is a hybrid or EV that doesn't compromise performance, exempt the gasoline-powered Supra from its electrification plans, or discontinue the model altogether.

The Manual Toyota Supra Will Be More Special Than We Thought

Including the availability of a warranty.
San Antonio-base tuner European Auto Group caught the world's attention earlier this year when it announced the first-ever manual-swapped fifth-generation Toyota Supra. EAG has already successfully created the world's only manual Ferrari 430 Scuderia and is in the process of building a manual 458 Italia, so it's well up to the task.
EAG owner Art Bartosik gave CarBuzz an exclusive update on how the build is going and to announce more details about what customers can expect from the swap. This won't just be a stock Supra with a manual gear lever, EAG is redesigning the entire dashboard to work with the new transmission.

"Currently, the interior is in the design phase with a preliminary sketch completed to a final rendering. Our designer is currently in Korea working with composite engineers to bring the center console to life in the same factory carbon fiber finish. The buttons for the lane assist, traction, auto stop/start, and the parking brake will be relocated and redeveloped into the new console," Bartosik says.

"The A/C controls will be moved back into the dash another 2.5 inches to make gears one, three, and five easier to access without hitting the display and controls. The driver's side angled knee guard will be cut back and replaced with a new piece matching the interior," he adds. Bartosik also addressed the shift knob, which he promised would look like the unit found on the Toyota GR HV Sports concept.

"The shift knob you see [in the rendering] is just generic, as we will work on a custom knob with a flip-up button for sport mode, which will be available later on as an option called 'The Concept Shifter.'"

As for all of the car's modern software, EAG has "acquired the newest version of BMW Diagnostic and Programming software and has found that the modules can be seamlessly retrofitted to a manual transmission. The car will have all other electronics and communication with all required sensors so the buttons and functions will work as intended from the factory," Bartosik promises.

In addition to a sketch and a nice rendering, EAG also provided a picture of a cutout next to the brake pedal (for the clutch pedal) and a picture showing the recess for the clutch master cylinder rod. The clutch assembly, clutch master cylinder, and lines are all factory OEM BMW components and aside from the custom center console, all parts will be sourced directly from BMW. Part of the research development for the hydraulic lines is being performed by UK-based Hydra-Test and the first transmission was sourced from Sussex Auto Parts.
Of course, this is still a modified car, meaning Toyota's three-year/36,000-mile warranty will be out the window. Fortunately, EAG says it will offer one-, two-, and three-year bumper-to-bumper warranties on the transmission swap and other major items like the alternator. Wear and tear items like the brakes and clutch won't be covered but "if Toyota doesn't pick up the warranty, then EAG will," says Bartosik.

As for allocations, EAG says it will perform 16 swaps in the next 12 months and "if demand is higher we will request more transmissions." Build slots are available now with a $6,000 deposit and a total cost of $12,000. This may sound like a lot of money just for a manual transmission, but as you can see, there is more work being done here and you will end up with one of the only fifth-gen manual Supras in the world. The builds are slated to begin after the 2019 SEMA show in November.

Bartosik anticipates the Supra build slots will go quickly and mentions that EAG has received calls for more Ferrari manual swaps and even the new C8 Chevrolet Corvette. "It looks like kids do want what their fathers and grandfathers enjoyed as car enthusiasts," he says, referring to driving a manual transmission car. Perhaps if there is enough demand, EAG will answer enthusiast's prayers by applying its manual-swapping skills on the new Corvette.

Widebody 2020 Toyota Supra With Huge Wing Is Heading To SEMA

This year’s SEMA Show is expected to be filled with lots of new Supras adorned with more aftermarket components than you can wrap your head around. These renderings preview one of tuned examples of Toyota’s latest sports car that’s heading to Las Vegas.

Evasive Motorsports is the company behind this project, and we happen to think its creation offers a nice balance between ‘crazy’ and ‘tasteful’ – but, as always, you’re more than welcome to voice your opinion in the Comments right below.

No matter how you feel, you cannot deny that it is eye-catching. The modifications start at the front with the fitment of a custom carbon fiber splitter that makes it look like a Time Attack racer. It is also wearing a relatively subtle widebody kit that accentuates the flared arches of the stock Supra without going overboard.

No stone has been left at the rear either. A large carbon lip spoiler has been added to the trunklid while sitting on top of this lip is a more traditional fixed-wing. Finally, a set of carbon fiber side skirts and deep-dish multi-spoke wheels complete the upgrades.

It remains to be seen if Evasive Motorsports’ fifth-gen Supra features any kind of engine modifications. One expert engine builder recently suggested that the stock block of the 3.0-liter B58 inline-six used by the Supra (and the BMW Z4 M40i) can probably get up to 1,000 HP without the need for extensive mods to the engine block. With this in mind, we expect to see SEMA packed with twin-turbo or supercharged Supras churning out much more than the 335 HP of the standard car.
