Default Kansas solar panel users may soon pay more for electricity

See this horseshit? I wrote my rep about this.

This is nothing but a penalty for solar users, and nothing else. There is a fixed cost every month that’s called the “customer charge” that is supposed to pay for all this. Electrical rates are supposed to be just variable cost for the amount of electricity used. What’s next? Charging people in apartments more money because their energy efficient multifamily building are not paying their fair share? How about an increased rate fee for taking a vacation and not using enough electricity?

They are trying to intermingle variable and fixed costs into the usage fee. I've asked our rep to fight this and pass consumer protection laws (or whatever) that won't allow this to happen. The fixed customer charge needs to cover the cost of maintaining the grid, and everyone connected to it should pay. But by no means should you pay any sort of penalty for using less electricity.

Sort of like charging people a higher tax for using electric cars since they are not paying gas taxes.

Not really. It'd be like charging more gasoline tax to a guy who drives a Fiesta than a guy who drives a Suburban.

(Different topic, but most states EV's pay their road tax during registration , or are planning to, and the road tax is actually disproportionately higher than gasoline, so they actually wind up paying more.)

It would be more "fair" if everyone just paid the same fee upfront regardless of what fuel you use. Same with the electrical rates.
