Default Purchasing used phones

Where would everyone recommend buying used/refurbished phones from? I am looking at probably an iphone 6 or 6s w/ 64gb or better. I would even consider the "plus" models if I could find a good enough deal.

Craigslist and facebook community sales posts have me a bit skiddish watching people get ripped off. I bought my 5S off of ebay with good results. I have also looked at Gazelle and Glyde, but didn't know if I should check anywhere else out.

Craigslist is fine to buy off of, just meet the seller at a ATT/Sprint/etc store and have them run the ESN to verify its clean and clear. If they aren't willing to do that, don't buy their phone

How about the "unlocked" phones? Will Verizon/Att have any issues with the phone being unlocked?

I'm looking for a replacement as well and see a lot of unlocked phones being sold at small cellular shops..

The last ones that we bought were unlocked. It works fine, but about once a day it has a popup regarding the carrier. You can hit ignore and it goes away without impacting use of the phone, but I think the phone was from Verizon or someone, and we are not.

Do find battery life to be an issue on the used phones you buy?

I haven't had any issues yet. At this point, i have only purchased off of ebay. I usually pay about half price of a new one and buy two at a time (one for the wife and one for me). Usually the seller or ebay will have a warranty that you can purchase that goes for 1-3 years (standard is 14-60 days). I have not purchased one of those yet.

I have done our last two rounds of phones like that. The way I view it, is even if one went to crap fairly quick, I could replace it and still be ahead. Obviously, there is a little risk to it, but I really can't bring myself to pay $600-800+, payments or not, for a phone from a carrier. Especially since I will hardly be pushing its capabilities.

We have had our 5S's for two years now and the only reason I am considering upgrading, is that she runs out of memory space and I run a lot of newer apps that don't do as well on it - that is the only time I have seen battery life suffer.

I would really like to get off of apple, but I have hundreds of songs on the phone that I don't want to lose.

there are factory unlocked phones so I don't see why there would be an issue

I'm in the same boat when it comes to the prices. Been running the same Moto X for over 3 years now. Actually been quite impressed with it. I don't use a fraction of what a smart phone is capable of doing and by turning off a lot of the functions I can get 3+ days out of the battery.

How come you are wanting to ditch apple? I was actually thinking of going the other direction just to be on the same platform as my wife and to get a nicer camera. I find myself taking a lot of photos/video now that we have our son.

Good point. I forgot some came from the factory that way.

My first problem with them is that I think there are better phones out there for the money. They just don't have the universal appeal and ease of use (or at least familiarity) that apple does. It always seems like their new gen phones are just catching up to what other companies have had one or two gens ago. I would take recommendations on others. I have started looking at some like the samsung 6 or 7 edge.

The second thing that really turns me off, is that they keep finding ways to milk their customers for more. Where a lot of phones can be charged by readily available and cheap USB cords, apple has to have a proprietary cable, then they changed to the lightning cable, then they made an update to only allow licensed (more expensive) lightning cables. On the newest gen of iphone (7) they eliminated the headphone port. I can think of no other reason to do that than to milk more money out of customers. Yes, you can get bluetooth headphones and apple gives you an adapter, but it is one more thing to buy or carry with you. It is bullshit.

The third, but I guess less important reason, is that some of the home automation/smart devices that we have, will work with a lot of android phones and apps, but you have to buy specific equipment if you want them to work with siri.

This. Coming from a former Verizon employee... if they aren't willing to meet, it's probably a scam

Well, just purchased a Samsung S7. Going to try to make the switch from the Iphone, then switch my wife. I ordered their USB port that is supposed to let you transfer data from the iphone. That would go a long way into making the transition easy. As long as I can get my music, pictures, and contacts, I will be happy.

Sounds like a plan. Craigslist deal or ebay seller?

I ran with ebay. I looked at CL, but found a place cheaper that had a lot of good reviews on ebay. I figured for my first android phone, it was at least worth that gamble.
