Boulevard discontinues its Dry Stout beer after 17 years

Boulevard’s Dry Stout is just about tapped out.

Submitted photo Boulevard Brewing Company is discontinuing its Dry Stout beer after 17 years.

After 17 years of brewing the jet-black beer — which has a smooth, almost coffee-like flavor — the Kansas City-based brewery is calling it quits on Dry Stout.
It wasn’t an easy decision, says Boulevard marketing director Jeremy Ragonese.
“It's especially painful with a brand like Dry Stout,” Ragonese says, because it’s been “a part of our family for years.”
But consumer demand for the year-round beer is very seasonal, Ragonese says. And Dry Stout has “a very large competitor in the world” — that would be Guinness — vying for the same tap handles at local bars.
That’s partly why expanding the Dry Stout brand outside the Kansas City region has been “an uphill battle,” Ragonese says.
Boulevard Dry Stout was first introduced in April 1996. The beer, which gets its creamy texture from an infusion of nitrogen bubbles, is only available on tap at bars and restaurants.
Ragonese says Boulevard’s last shipment of Dry Stout went out in September, so local restaurants and bars that serve the beer are down to their final kegs. (I had a pint of Dry Stout at Lawrence’s Star Bar last weekend).
This isn’t the first beer that Boulevard has discontinued. Tenpenny Ale, Lunar Ale and Amber Ale all belong to the great beer mug in the sky. Amber Ale, the most recent retiree of those three, was phased out over the summer.
But not all retired beer stays retired: Last month, Boulevard announced it was bringing back two popular Smokestack Series beers, Chocolate Ale and Two Jokers Double-Wit, in 2014.
Ragonese says Dry Stout will return once every year — Boulevard will brew the beer exclusively for the Kansas City Irish Fest on Labor Day weekend.
In other words, that final toast can wait a few months.
Have you spotted Dry Stout at a local bar or restaurant? Comment here or tweet us @chowtownkc.

That's too bad because almost any American stout is way better than guiness. At least there's still Dark Truth and the Imperial Stout.

I do feel bad for the Stout fans, but overall the decision gets a "Meh."

?
Dark Truth is an Imperial Stout.
I cannot think of one good "American" stout honestly.

I prefer a nice smooth Guinness over the Guinness knock off.

What is it you are looking for in a stout?

Guinness makes a great beer, but I can think of some pretty good stouts and imperials from the good 'ol USA that I prefer any day on the week.

Right now Sam Adams' Gingerbread Stout is available

Oh gotcha. No idea that even existed. There are so many limited edition type beers out there, it just blows my mind. 90% of them I never see.

Anything really. Buffalo Sweat and Left Hand Nitro Milk Stouts were really good and considered an American Stout? I guess I need to try more. Gingerbread Stout does sound good.

I have yet to try a Christmas beer that I liked.

Guess the Shiner Holiday Cheer ruined it for me.

We have a date when your car is back up and running, so I will gather some bottles of my favs and bring them along for you to try

Boulevard looks to be discontinuing Double Wide on draft. We will be done with it once we run out of what we have

I think it will still be available in the bottle though.

Boulevard Brewing Company

Yum...2,400 pounds of cacao nibs are now submersed in Chocolate Ale. The beer will hang in fermentation tanks for another week.

Picked up 2 bottles of imperial stout today one to drink one to age. Also found they have a bourbon barrel ale released as well. Vs the imperial at 60% stout and 40% aged in barrels the second is 84% barrel aged.

Cracked into the bourbon barrel ale and I like it. The wife said no way as she hates whiskey ect.

Wish they would have done the bourbon barrel mix with stout but can't complain as it is still good. I'm betting I still like the stout more though
