I like this one fairly well. It's from a few weeks ago.

From tonight. Not sure if I really like it or not.

Great sharpness Sean! I think a hairlight or rim light would have helped make her pop a little more. But the colors are uhmazing!

Thanks Nathan. I actually just picked up 2 more flashes, but i'm waiting on my receivers, so I haven't had a chance to use them yet. Hopefully I'll get some actual strobes before too long, it would be nice to have modeling lights.

I got an olympus e410, but I don't know how to use it well enough to post any photo. I know nothing about photography.

What is your lighting setup here Ryan? If I may ask. It's a lightbox I figure, but do you use multiple flashes/strobes or what?

This is done from my home makeshift light table. It's not a lightbox. Just a 2' x 3' sheet of clear plexiglas painted white on one side. Curved to make a seamless background. The lighting is a remote fired 430ex with a westcott 6"x8" softbox attached placed directly above just out of frame.

Great shot Nathan! I really like the composition here. Light looks good too, only thing I maybe would have done differently was lower the shutter speed just a touch to let in just a little more ambient. The balance of ambient and flash still looks VERY good! And hey what do I know. I think it's just a matter of personal preference. Anyways good work.

Thank you for the critique and kind words, Sean. I was needing that kind of critique. I am still trying to understand flash and ambient lighting and how they all work together.

So, let me get this straight. In this shot for more ambient lighting I should have slowed the shutter speed down? Wouldn't that overexpose the shot? Or should I also turn the flash down a bit? I will say that shooting portraits with OCF is much harder than I thought to get it correct. With product photography you just blast the white background out and call it good.

The other thing you can do to get more ambient light in is boost your ISO. That is if your camera will handle it okay.

I will certainly try that next time. I was shooting at ISO100 in this shot - so I think I could bump it up a tad. Thanks Ryan

Yes slowing the shutter speed would have allowed more ambient light, and from what I understand should not affect the flash exposure at all. The meter in the camera only reads ambient light exposures, assuming you aren't shooting ettl, and your flash is in manual mode. An easy way I remember, though may not be completely correct in all circumstances is that, shutter speed affects the ambient exposure and aperture will affect the flash exposure. Obviously the flash power level will also affect the flash exposure. lol. Pretty sure the only exceptions would be if your shooting flash with no ambient, or when it comes to max sync speeds. So next time you're shooting ocf just remember to adjust the ss for the ambient exposure you want. Most people don't like the light balanced perfectly, and like to underexpose the background, like I said it's a matter of preference and depends on the look you are going for. (like I said before your shot is still great.) Also, to see how aperture affects the flash exposure, set your flash at say 1/8th power at f/8 and shoot something, them keep the flash power the same but open up to say f4, and look how much brighter the flash is. Maybe you already know that part, but I figured I would throw that in there. Anyways hope that helps, and makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions. You know I'm happy to help.
