it says to put the phone into recovery, turn the phone off and hold down the home button while the phone is turning on, then press alt L, then Alt s to flash it.

I don't want to update and loose everything on my phone..

Facebook
Flashlight ()
Google Maps
Handcent SMS
Mobile Banking

MySpace
Pandora

Shazam
Task Manager 1.10.7 (because a lot of programs keep running in the background after closing them thus draining the battery)
The Weather Channel
USA Today
Weatherbug
Where
WifiOnOff

I've downloaded a couple games too; Solitaire and Snake. btw, the GPS on this thing is Amazing!
Our list is pretty similar, but you are missing one very important one. Noble Fart. ShopSavvy is also cool if you like the barcode scanner app. I have read that there is a bug in the "Messages SMS" program that prevents the phone from going into a true sleep mode, sucking up the battery. Thats the main reason I went with Handcend. Just make sure to disable the notifications on "Messages", restart, and dont open it again. Before I told my dad about this his awake time was at 99% since owning the phone. Mine was at 45%.

It tells you what apps are currently running in the background (killing battery life). From there you can select which ones to shut down. I have mine setup for one touch stop. So I just open it and click whatever I dont want running.

edit-it also tells you the cpu percentage, memory usage, etc...but I dont pay attention to that stuff.

It is a must have. There are way too many programs that don't close completely like they should.

I don't have that issue. My only complaint is it doesn't show how many new texts you have on the Handcent icon like the stock Messages does. I love the different styles for the conversations it has; I'm currently using the iPhone style.

What stuff should I keep running and what should I shut down?

Currently it show, dialer, phone, messenger, task manager, phone, google talk, email, home and browser. The one click off does this just shut down until I reopen it or what?

What task manager are you using? I've been playing over the last couple days on what I can leave open without screwing stuff up.

edit: And yea, it just closes the program until you open it again.

I close everything...saving "Task Manager 1.10.7 for last because it will obviously close the program you are using. HTC Sense I have started to leave open becuase I realized its the clock/weather stuff on my homepage (I think). It always takes much longer for my home screen to load after I close that, because Im assuming its having to re-open. Other than that you dont really need anything open that has a shortcut/button. It will just open back up next time you click on it.

Edit- I keep mine set to 'current tasks'. If you guys are doing 'current processes' theres obviously a lot more options and you cant close everything

Raytheon Sends Android To Battlefield
Elizabeth Woyke, 10.19.09, 07:40 PM EDT
The defense contractor is the latest--and perhaps least likely--convert to Google's mobile platform.

Google's mobile operating system Android has won plenty of adherents among cellphone makers and gadget manufacturers since its 2007 debut. Now defense contractor Raytheon is preparing it for a more urgent mission: saving lives in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Using Android software tools, Raytheon ( RTN - news - people ) engineers built a basic application for military personnel that combines maps with a buddy list. Raytheon calls the entire framework the Raytheon Android Tactical System, or RATS for short. Mark Bigham, a vice president of business development in Raytheon's Intelligence and Information Systems unit, says the company selected Android because its open-source nature made developing applications easy. Every part of RATS is tailored for use on a battlefield. A soldier could make an unmanned plane a "buddy," for instance, and track its progress on a map using his phone. He could then access streaming video from the plane, giving him a bird's eye view of the area. Soldiers could also use the buddy list to trace the locations of other members of their squad.

Some RATS services stress a fast connection to the Department of Defense's Internet-like data network. This would enable a soldier on a mission to take a picture of a suspect and send the image to military headquarters for identification. RATS includes some lightweight encryption to ensure that outsiders can't intercept the images or video or hack into the phone's buddy list.

Eventually, RATS devices could double as biometric scanners. A small device could snap on top of the phone's camera and capture fingerprints, says Bigham. The photos could then be sent to an off-site facility for processing. Most of these features have been incorporated into the basic RATS application, which Raytheon says took more than two years to build. The company expects to finalize contracts and deploy RATS in the next month or two. Bigham says the Department of Defense has expressed interest at "a very senior level" and believes that other government groups, such as the Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement agencies may sign on, too.

Somehow I managed to get a pop up window that allowed me to select one as the default, I ended up just deleting the handcent, it was kind of a pain, text would just pop up over whatever I was doing at the time. The task manager was night and day on my battery life today. Great download.

I was having that problem, so I just went back to the stock message system. My phone has like 99% up time too, I will have to check into that...

Only apps I leave open in task manager are htc sense and one called phone. Every time I close it I lose signal for about 5 seconds lol. I have noticed that task panel tends to show more tasks that are running than task manager does, but task panel wont close itself, so I have to go into task manager to close it...
