What would brick a Spint hero since they don't do over the air updates? Downloading bad '2.0' code? Plugging in to sync or something and getting an update? (seems unlikely since I thought you had to go to sprint's site and initiate it)

and this would be covered through insurance?

Assuming I buy when 2.0 is available on sprint, is there any benefit to 'rooting' and getting a different version of the OS?
Everyone is trying to figure out 2.0 (nothing has been said about a push) for any carrier really

Bricking is supposed to be a permanent thing but : http://code.google.com/p/android-roms/wiki/Unbrick

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Insurance? I have heard yes and no, but why would/should they cover something you intentionally just did to the phone

Great forum for modding info etc..

I thought 2.0 was on the droid and someone had pushed it back to the G1 even.

I'd assume it'd be available in a modded version before sprint releases it? That's 90% of the reason I'd want to do it, I want the turn by turn directions.

2.0 is shipping on the droid

And the SDK just got released (for developers) so if you phone is a developer phone you can install it, or if you phone is unlocked

G1? The G1 has space constraints from posts on the android forums etc.. (short google search) http://tinyurl.com/ygtmy6y. So basically to get it on the G1 you need a 3rd party app, clear off the partition and run the 2.0 update (from reading)

Android is in charge of the update push and the carriers need to figure out a way to get it to people, that is on them, as far as "modding" they don't mod them once they are released although there are people out there that do.

So the only (and also legit) way to get 2.0 on a sprint hero is to wait for sprint to push it out?

is there even a way to get 2.0 on the sprint hero before Sprint pushes out their version, like root the phone and download a modified version?

Maybe i'm misunderstanding too... there's upgrading early to 2.0 before the carrier offers it, and there's modding the phone? I see them as the same thing for the Hero right now since there's no 2.0 available yet from sprint.

HTC Hero Will Receive Android 2.0 'Eclair' Update

Thanks to Twitter, we now know that HTC has plans to update the HTC Hero to Android 2.0 'Eclair'. After seeing all the goodies that Android 2.0 will deliver and Android users' positive response to them, HTC needed to jump on board and address the Hero's situation with Android 2.0. The one sticking point that's keeping it from happening right now, seems to be that HTC Sense needs to get updated and optimized for Android 2.0, which makes sense since the beautiful UI is more than just a tasteful theme or skin.

It's odd that HTC didn't address the Magic or Dream's situation with Android 2.0, only choosing to discuss the Hero. Hopefully we'll hear more information regarding the other devices soon. In any case, we expect HTC to fix whatever issues Sense has with Android 2.0 and have the HTC Hero ready for Android 2.0 as quickly as possible. Then it'll be up to Sprint to deliver the update to us. Cross our fingers?

So if you want to get rid of the UI by all means hack the phone and proceed with the download

ahhhhh... I see.

Is there not a UI that replaces 'Sense' that still looks good and functions well when you put 2.0 on it?

The picture attached with the article states 'new Sprint account' but if someone argued long enough it would probably apply to upgrades as well.

Post your Android screenshots!

Here is the how-to:

With root
1) Download the Screenshot application (free).
2) Open the application, give it su permission, and once the text comes up, close it.

Without root
1) Install the Android SDK
2) Enable USB debugging on your device
3) Run DDMS from the tools directory
4) Select your phone from the list

See which Gmail friends have Android with Green Robot

Plugin author Chad Y. has created a cool little tool for Gmail. It allows you to see which of your friends are currently using their Android device. This is helpful to know when someone might be chatting from their phone instead of a keyboard. Just login to Gmail and enable the feature under Labs.

It's the stock time/weather widget from HTC's Sense UI for the Hero.

edit: After reading that again, this is for Best Buy. I'm tired of saving you guys that bought your Heros at Best Buy money! The phone is still listed for $179.99 on Sprint's site. I'll still call *2 and see though.
If anyone is eligible for an upgrade, the $99.99 is available to you as well as new subscribers. Awesome deal for those looking to upgrade...especially with the firmware update that Sprint/HTC released on Wednesday to fix a few issues!

Buddy of mine went in today and they had the price listed as $99 for new accounts. He didn't ask if they'd apply it to upgrades. I'm sure they would if you complain enough.

Still a good price. What did you have to do for the $125 price so I can pass the info along?

Brin: Two Google Operating Systems May Become One

Google co-founder says Chrome and Android could someday become a single OS. Chrome browser plus Android OS equals... Android.

Saying that Chrome is for the Internet and Android for devices, requires a belief that users actually make the distinction.

They don't and Google knows it, but only co-founder Sergey Brin can say so.

In this case, it is the Emperor seeing his subjects' new clothes. Or the profound lack thereof.

(And if you haven't seen Chrome OS, here is our visual tour).

Following the Thursday's Chrome OS announcement, Brin informally told reporters that the two operating systems were "likely to converge over time," but offered no specific timetable.

His remarks didn't seem important at the time and were briefly lost in the excitement of the new OS. Today, however, people who heard the remark realized Brin actually said something important. And it undermines the whole Chrome OS concept.

Brin cited the common Linux OS and WebKit browser heritage the two operating systems share as an example of forces driving them together.

During the presentation, other Google execs described a "perfect storm of converging trends" that somehow required it to develop and support two separate operating systems.

Maybe converging trends lead to converging operating systems? Could be, just ask Sergey Brin.

I had already wondered what the difference would be between Android and Chrome when installed on a netbook. Given the Chrome browser, wouldn't Android do all the same things Chrome could do, plus run Android applications?

Isn't that what users really want? A s opposed to an operating system only capable of running a browser and connecting to Internet-based applications?

It is easy to understand why Google wants to keep Chrome OS and Android separated in our minds: Chrome OS seems revolutionary, if a bit far-fetched. Android, by comparison, is the evolution of what are already doing.

In reality, Chrome OS is a subset of Android, Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. It's the new Lite OS, faster and less filling.

However, merge Chrome and Android and you end up with Android.

It will be hard for Google to keep people from noticing what a good idea that is. An idea that in some ways cuts the legs right out from under a standalone Chrome OS

The Android Tablet Is Here

While the tech world has been waiting for Apple, Microsoft, and even TechCrunch to introduce their tablets, a company called Camangi has gone ahead and released its own device: The WebStation is a 7-inch touchscreen tablet that runs Android 1.5. The device features 802.11 b/g WiFI, a GPS module, and a built-in micro SD Card Reader.
The WebStation features a number of baked-in apps, including a Web browser and Gmail. The device can also serve as an e-book reader and a music player, and there's a stand on its back, so it can double as a photo frame or movie-streaming device. The WebStation also has a USB hub and a rechargeable battery, which should give you four to five hours of media usage, according to the company.

The WebStation will be available early next month for $399.

First image of the Motorola Motus leaks out

Someone just hit up our tip line and sent us the first picture of the Motorola Motus. The phone is basically the CLIQ v2 (almost identical specs), but it features a reverse flip keyboard. Yup, there is a keyboard on the back of the phone (when it is closed). When the keyboard is flipped open, it sits below the screen just as a normal slider would. The Motus is rumored to support AT&T and T-Mobile 3G bands so it could show up on either carrier (or both). We have also been told the device is based off Android 1.5 and will launch in Q1 2010.

Update: CellPassion is reporting Motorola has registered the trademark “Backflip” which could end up being the official name of this phone.

Update 2: Another tipster just sent in the full Motus specs.

What do you guys think?

Specs:

Who says lightning doesn’t strike twice? Right after we received the first picture of the new Motorola Motus, another anonymous tipster sent in the full hardware specs. I’ll let you guys add the commentary on this one.

Motorola Motus specs:

* 528 MHz Qualcomm MSM7201A
* 512 MB ROM
* 256 MB RAM
* 3.1 inch display 320 x 480 (HVGA)
* 5 megapixel camera with LED flash
* WiFi / Bluetooth 2.0 / GPS
* OS Android 1.5 with Motoblur
* GSM 850/900/1800/1900 W-CDMA 850/900/1700/1900/2100
* Reverse flip keyboard
* Rear directional touchpad

As you can see, this phone is essentially part of the Cliq family. The only thing new is the outer design. It features a reverse flip keyboard and a rear directional touchpad. This is exactly what I speculated last month and I’m really curious to see how the touchpad will operate.

The single photo we have of the device only shows the outside of the phone. Somewhere on the back of the keyboard (or maybe display) there will be a touchpad. I must say it is quite an odd design. We think the touchpad will be used for the gesture controls that no one has taken full advantage of yet.

According to the leaked Motorola roadmap, this phone is due in Q1 2010 and will be in the same price point as the Cliq.

Android This Week: ARM Alliance Formed; Droids Fix Themselves?

Android is like a snowball rolling downhill — it won’t be long before it’s moving too fast for anything to stop it. That movement is surely going to spread from the smartphone sector, where Android has its roots, to that of smartbooks. Knowing this, ARM and the Android folks have put their heads together and formed the Solution Center for Android Alliance.

The sole aim of the group, which was unveiled this week, is to help make it easier to put Android on ARM-based devices, of which smartbooks are the emerging choice. The group of 35 companies will pool resources and make them available for developers to get Android systems going with the ARM chipset, which is particularly well-suited for the consumer electronics market.

In the meantime, the Verizon Droid, produced by Motorola, is the hottest Android phone on the market. But early adopters of the Droid were reporting that the auto-focus feature on the device’s powerful camera wasn’t working properly, resulting in lots of fuzzy images. This week, however, many Droid owners found the focusing difficulties to be a thing of the past, prompting suspicions that Verizon had pushed a secret fix over-the-air to the phones. There seemed to be no other explanation for how such a serious bug could suddenly disappear.

In fact, the auto-focus code that Android 2.0 uses reportedly has a bug that makes for fuzzy photos in 24.5-day cycles. The camera works poorly for 24.5 days, then works properly for the next 24.5 days. This is based on the improper use of a timestamp by the focusing code, a strange cause to be sure. Hopefully Verizon will have the formal fix for this bug before the 24.5-day “good” working cycle ends.
