What is the best way for my wife to record my son playing guitar so she can send me a file so I can listen to it. It is a last gen mac and I don't know if she has Garage band.

does she have a webcam? I believe that macs require powered audio in, so you could not directly plug the guitar into the computer and record. she may be able to plug directly from the amp to the computer and that might do the trick, especially if the amp has headphone out, you could just get a male to male cord.

a free program that would be good to record on is called audacity

can she not record from the built in mic in garage band if she has it? if so, that would be the easiest way, or skype if she has a webcam....

yeah she has garageband. I just want to see if she can just put the laptop next to him while he plays and record through the mic. I don't need anything fancy, just want to hear him play sometimes. Thanks guys. I'll go through garageband and see how she can do it.

Iwork 08, Office for Mac or OpenOffice? I'd like to go w/ office, but $130 for the student edition is kinda pricey.

Also, what do you guys use for email?

office is the best choice if you are worried about compadability,

iwork/ilife is the best overall, programs like keynote own everything else.

i just use Mail, i never liked entourage (ku stuents get a free dl of it i believe) Mail always just seemed easier, and mail syncs with my iphone.

Ah, so Entourage is sort of like Outlook. Wondered what it was. I'd probably use that then since I'm familiar with Outlook.

Using Entourage, fits me a little better than Mail did. I may use both every so often though.

Omniweb is pissing me off. I paid the money to get a license and it is becoming unusable. The stupid browser crashes at random times during regular browsing (sites like ESPN, CNN, Facebook, etc). Not only that, but I cant watch videos on the CNN site with it. Have to do it in Safari or Firefox.

Gay. Not pleased with this browser at the moment.

Omniweb was ok, I've really good luck with Camino, it is from the same guys that make firefox, just don't have all the extension add ons though.

New issue: Stupid bootcamp. Or it could just be my XP Pro SP2 disk. We'll see tomorrow when I try to install Vista instead. Nearly everytime I tried to install XP via bootcamp I got the blue screen of death. The couple times I did actually get a little further, I made the mistake of picking the "Leave disk format as is" option which I found later you're not supposed to do. Couldnt get back to that screen though to try to format the partition in NTFS.

Why couldnt I just insert the effin disk and have it work?

edit: Found a Vista disk instead and it worked with no problems.

I honestly wasn't impressed by omniweb. I use camino personally.

Sorry to hear about the xp install. I had no problems with mine.

Do Mac users now need Anti-Virus?

The new iAntivirus is being pitched at Mac users previously thought to be safe from the threat of viruses and Web nasties. The program's creator PC Tools says the idea Macs are safe is a myth.
While PC Tools CEO Cimon Clausen says Macs are "relatively safe", the company is nevertheless using the latest round of Mac specific threats to promote iAntivirus. One of these includes the AppleScript.THT trojan, reportedly affecting Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5.

Mind you, even PC Tools' own data lists just 2% of Mac specific threats as viruses - the rest includes keyloggers, hacking tools, and backdoors. The PC Tools iAntivirus software is a "lightweight" anti-malware tool that only targets Mac specific threats.

Maybe Mac users won't have the last laugh about being virus-free for long.
