Looking at upgrading the ram and hard drive in my mac book. I'm guessing with the intel core 2, I will need a match set of ram chips? I noticed newegg has some good prices.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...23879&name=2GB

also hard drives, pretty much any SATA drive will do right? Just looking for a nice 200gb hard drive probably.

is there an easy to reorder menubar programs other than turning them all off, and then on in the order you want them to display?

edit: cmd click does the job

I upgraded by adding another 1gb stick of ram to my iMac. I left the 512 that was in there from apple and added the 1gb stick from newegg. It was kingston.
I havn't had any problems at all.

Now in my new Macbook it has 2x512 sticks and i am thinking about jsut picking up 1 1gb stick at microcenter for $32 and see if it gives me any problems. If it does ill just return it rather than dealing with newegg returns/shipping.

Ill report this weekend on if the ram i get for the macbook works, but honeslt i dont need much more ram for a notetaking laptop, but i might end up buying another 1gb stick for the iMac.

Ill let everybody know but so far mixing of non name brand ram has not had an effect on my computers at all, and my computers work fine, and it accepted it fine, so i didnt have any crashing programs or anything like that.

hmmmm I wonder how much 2g sticks are. Would be nice to upgrade my ram.

Anybody have any recommendations for hard drives. Thinking upgrading my hard drive, it came with the 160, but that is getting eaten up fast. I may actually just pick up like a 160-200 firewire external drive from MAC.

do you have a macbook laptop? if so it is going to be hard to upgrade your internal, especially from mac its extremely expensive to go the 250gb MBP harddrive route.
also how much ram does your mac mobo support? unless you just picked up the newest macbook in the last wek or 2 with the new chipset like i did it will only support 2gb total. I have heard there is a way to go 3 gb but im not sure about that. If thats so then you will only be able to put 2 1gb stick in. if not then you can go 2x2gb sticks.

For the harddrive its hard to find a harddrive in the 160 that small with firewire. 350 and up is your best bet with firewire as it costs more. heck there are 350gb usb 2.0 harddrives at best buy right now for $80

I run my internal harddrives on both my macs, then i just have 1 older usb external right now. I am looking at another one as well in firewire 400. or if you have a newer mbp you could even go firewire 800 which is amazing lol.

here are some of my suggestions...

cheapest 1gb sticks...

Yes it is a MB Pro. It should be able to support 4gigs of ram. When I was looking to buy it Apple would let me upgrade to 4gigs I just didn't want to pay for it.

I'll probably grab a external hard drive before I leave.

yeah exactly. So I figure the laptop should be able to handle it, I just don't want to pay for it.

thats why you just go with newegg, install it yourself and save over $500 lol.
and the small change the ram gives you problems with like programs crashing ect. just return it any possibly try a different brand, because they shouldnt really give you a problem atleast mine didnt.

Ok guys, help me out here.

I am trying to make a legal backup of a DVD Movie I own.

I have handbrake and Toast Titanium

In Handbrake what are the formats or presets I should use?
I know in DVD shrink on a PC it puts it in a Audio TS and Video TS folders, is it different with Handbrake? I want it to be just like a regular DVD where I can put it in the player and watch it.

I've done a lot of stuff with handbrake, but it was to dumb it down for my laptop so I can't help you to much on good movie settings. For full DVD backups I have been using http://www.mactheripper.org/ Mac the ripper and it has been doing pretty good. It only screwed up on a couple movies, but handbrake wouldn't do the same movie either.

just do simmiler settings then burn the single file imo, jsut mess around with a few dvds until you get it right the settings are for quality purposes so the higher its set the better quality and the bigger the file it is. just dont make a movie that is bigger than what your dvd can hold.
