Default Microsoft Windows | 10 |

You'll also get a free upgrade to Windows 10

Microsoft just dropped a bomb that will echo through the world of software piracy for a long time: Windows 10 will be a free upgrade even for non-genuine versions of Windows.
"We are upgrading all qualified PCs, genuine and non-genuine, to Windows 10," Windows operating systems chief Terry Myerson told Reuters on Wednesday.

This means that all users running a pirated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8 will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 — a stark contrast to Microsoft's anti-piracy measures in the past, which included an activation system as well as warnings and reduced functionality for Windows systems that were determined to be non-genuine.
In January, Microsoft announced that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for users running Windows 7 or Windows 8. Non-genuine versions were not mentioned at the time. The catch is that Windows 10 will be free for the first year; after that, users will need to pay.

Quote:
So why is Microsoft doing this now? The answer is simple: China.
So why is Microsoft doing this now? The answer is simple: China. Hundreds of millions of users in the country are running a pirated version of Windows; with this move, Myerson says, Microsoft plans to "re-engage" those users. While Reuters' report is focused on China, Microsoft has confirmed to Mashable that the free upgrade for pirated Windows versions will work globally.
"Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Windows 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows. We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies," a Microsoft spokesperson told Mashable in an email.
On Tuesday, speaking at the Windows Hardware Engineering Community (WinHEC) summit in Shenzhen, China, Myerson announced that Windows 10 will be available this summer in 190 countries and in 111 languages.

They are saying you can upgrade for free within the first 12 months of the release. It will be free for use for the "lifetime of the device", per previous press releases.

If you haven't upgraded within 12 months of the Windows 10 release, you will then have to pay to upgrade.

Make sense?

Quote:
After one year of the Windows 10 platform being released to the general market, you'll have to start paying for it - if you've not already upgraded, that is to say. Just so long as you've got Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 now, or at the time at which you'd like to upgrade your machine to Windows 10, you'll be able to do so for free. It'll be a one-time update and you'll never have to pay for it beyond that.

According to Microsoft's Terry Myerson, this will be a free upgrade for the "lifetime of the device." That's a big change for Windows users who - not that long ago - were asked to pay for upgrades from Windows 7.

I'm guessing we will get a "CD Key" or the like when we upgrade, for future builds, re-formats, etc...? Or Nah?

Getting the upgrade to 10 prompts at home and work. Have not pulled the trigger on one yet.

Did you have to do the sign up to get the icon or you signed up after you got the icon?

^ my windows 7 has worked perfectly for the better half of 6 some odd years on the same machine. Most of the programs I have, I can no longer find the CD's for. Upgrading and having to reload everything doesn't sound like much fun. I think I will stay with windows 7 until the computer dies.

It appears that it will be an upgrade not a complete wipe/install (at least I hope)

How to reserve your free copy of Windows 10

A new notification prompts Windows 7 and 8.1 users to reserve an upgrade to the upcoming OS, due to debut July 29.

You can now reserve your free copy of Windows 10, if you meet the necessary requirements. Screenshot by Lance Whitney/CNET Microsoft is now pushing Windows 10 via a notice suggesting you reserve a copy.
On Monday, the software giant announced that Windows 10 will officially roll out July 29. That means it will be available on any PCs you purchase as of that date -- and as a free upgrade to your existing Windows 7 or 8.1 tablet or PC.
Microsoft has a lot riding on Windows 10. The new OS has the task of erasing the bad experiences people had with the touchscreen-focused Windows 8, which ultimately failed to catch fire among PC users. Windows 10 comes packed with new features, such as a redesigned Start menu, the Cortana voice assistant and a new browser called Edge, all designed to win over jaded Windows users. The new OS will also offer a more unified experience among PCs, tablets and smartphones as a way to convince consumers to go the Windows route for all their devices. As such, the company wants to make sure that current device owners know they can now get in line to pick up Windows 10.
So how can you now reserve your free copy of Windows 10?
  • First, you must be running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1, and you must have installed a March the Windows update dubbed KB3035583, according to blog site VentureBeat. That update will already be on your PC as long as you have Automated Updates enabled.
  • Peek at your Windows system tray in the lower right corner, and you should see a new icon displaying the Windows logo. Hover over it, and the popup messages says: "Get Windows 10."
  • Click that icon, and up pops a window that explains how the free upgrade works. Once it's available, Windows 10 will automatically download onto your PC. You'll receive a notification after the download is complete so that you can choose an appropriate time to install it.
  • You can scroll through the various screens of the Get Windows 10 window to read more about the new OS.
  • When you're done, simply click the button to reserve your free upgrade.
  • The reservation screen asks for your email address so you can receive the notification. Enter your email address and click the Send confirmation button. You can now close the Get Windows 10 window.
  • Should you change your mind and wish to cancel the reservation, just click the Get Windows 10 icon again.
  • Click the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner to display the menu and click the link for View confirmation.
  • Then click the link to Cancel reservation and click the button for Cancel reservation to confirm your choice.
Windows 10 is a free upgrade. The upgrade covers the full version of Windows 10, not simply a trial or limited version. It also ensures that you can run Windows 10 on your specific device for free "for the supported lifetime of your device," according to Microsoft.
But there are some caveats. The free upgrade applies only to Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1. So if you haven't upgraded Windows 7 to SP1 or Windows 8 to 8.1, you'll have to perform those tasks first. Also, you have one year from July 29 to upgrade your PC to Windows 10 for free. After that year is up, you'll presumably have to purchase Windows 10 yourself.
ADVERTISING

Those of you running Windows RT or RT 8.1 are out of luck. Microsoft has excluded Windows RT and RT 8.1 from the free upgrade offer.
Microsoft haven't revealed the pricing for Windows 10. But a page from online retailer Newegg spotted by CNET sister site ZDNet shows Windows 10 Home priced at $110 and Windows 10 Professional priced at $150. Those prices are for the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) versions of Windows 10, which are designed to be installed from scratch on a new device. Thus, the upgrade prices for those running Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 will likely be lower than that come July 30, 2016, when it's no longer free.
Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.

is there anywhere that I can look to see if my computer is up to snuff for the upgrade? I'm more worried that some of my older games will not work on windows 10 (I have not read much if anything about windows 10)

I was not overly happy with the windows 8 that came loaded on my dad's computer. It's been bugging as shit since day 1.

http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/w...ows-81-updated

The tool does check for OS upgrade eligibility. Which is a little more complicated than "Windows 7 or Windows 8.1." Actually, it will only work with Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows 8.1 with Update 1 (KB2919355).

(could try that)

Based on recent versions of Windows, this one should be great. When they have a good thing going, they fuck it up with a shitty new version and then fix that shitty version with something good again.

XP was good
Vista sucked - people flocked to Apple
Windows 7 is good (still use it at work)
Windows 8 sucks (use it at home when I need to use the desktop)
Windows 10 should be good again
