What do they do: They source, purchase and roast coffee beans from around the entire world. These beans are then sold to different restaurants and coffee shops around the Kansas City area, as well as used in their own coffee shop. They opened the coffee shop in 1992 and it has been interesting to see them expand, adapt and grow over the years as a business and part of the community. They now have their own Roasting location in the Firehouse, but I can still remember when they roasted there in the North end of the coffee shop itself.

Why do I like them: This is the first coffee shop I went to when I first started driving as a teenager. It is the place I had my first espresso and fell in love with all the different forms of drinks and artwork associated with coffee. Over the years, no matter where I have lived and traveled in this world, I always return to Broadway Cafe to sit, sip, read or write. It is a place that has greatly impacted my life, a place I have met strangers who turned into close friends, that I watch the sunrise and set from, contemplate my life, and find some peace in my own company. The locals who support it make up a constant stream of familiar faces, dogs, bicycles and community. It is a place to know and be known. It is not just a coffee shop, it is one of the axis on which my world turns.
Agree completely. We spend more $ here than any other place in KC. It's the only place I buy coffee or beans from, and it's my favorite hangout.

My favorite is IPAS (Independent Photo Art Supply). Also like Overland Photo Supply.

Great Plains Deli in Ft. Scott KS.
They make glorious sandwiches. I would fight someone for one of their reubens right now. There's at least 64 pounds on every sandwich. If you order a large sandwich, they lady will look at you like you're crazy, because you almost have to be Kobayashi to finish one. I usually get the medium and have some left over. The price KS about the same as Subway.

Koehn's bakery/deli in Butler MO.
This is a Mennonite owned/operated haven. They make their own bread for their glorious sandwiches, and also create a plethora of pastries that would make Chuck Norris cry in happiness and awe.

Bella Napoli is good as fuck. The experience would be quite a bit better if I knew how to speak italian, because they all fucking speak italian!

My dad used to take me to Johnny Ray's when I was a kid. He was never particularly interested in cars, but he would take me there when they had the car nights. Best damn fried corn nuggets anywhere.

Next to that is also Jumpin' Catfish, which I worked at in HS. Still the best damn hush puppies and fried catfish you can find anywhere around here.
