Default Whats your fav. local business.....???

I was watching the news today, and they were talking about a photography place that had been open for 50 years..... it got me thinking. "WOW, think of how good they must be at adapting, to be in buisness to be around 50 years... think how much the camera has changed over the years.... film formats, digital, etc"

So, it got me thinking.... I noticed a trend with myself in the last 5 years, is that I support more and more "local" business owners. Maybe its because of my involvement in House of Boost, and realizing how hard it is for small businesses.....

But I ask you KCSR, what are some of your FAV. local owned and operated business?

Whats the name/location?
What do they do?
Why do you like them?

Favorite local business: Broadway Cafe and Roasting Company

http://www.broadwayroasting.com/

What do they do: They source, purchase and roast coffee beans from around the entire world. These beans are then sold to different restaurants and coffee shops around the Kansas City area, as well as used in their own coffee shop. They opened the coffee shop in 1992 and it has been interesting to see them expand, adapt and grow over the years as a business and part of the community. They now have their own Roasting location in the Firehouse, but I can still remember when they roasted there in the North end of the coffee shop itself.

Why do I like them: This is the first coffee shop I went to when I first started driving as a teenager. It is the place I had my first espresso and fell in love with all the different forms of drinks and artwork associated with coffee. Over the years, no matter where I have lived and traveled in this world, I always return to Broadway Cafe to sit, sip, read or write. It is a place that has greatly impacted my life, a place I have met strangers who turned into close friends, that I watch the sunrise and set from, contemplate my life, and find some peace in my own company. The locals who support it make up a constant stream of familiar faces, dogs, bicycles and community. It is a place to know and be known. It is not just a coffee shop, it is one of the axis on which my world turns.

+1 for Black Dog, there all the time.

Being heavily involved in a small business myself, I often solely seek out local/small companies. There are too many to list so, I will start with one that is top of mind at the moment.

Aside from them being a client and neighbors Indigo Wild (Zum Soap) is doing big things nationally while still keeping the things that got them there. Did you know they still hand label everything, mostly by the ladies who have been there since the beginning.

Their seasonal blueberry wheat is fantastic.

I agree,

They have amazing food, good staffing, and the beers are awesome.
Its one of those "never lets you down" kinda places. Plus you can bring your own beer stein in and have it placed on the wall. (I have a few and have often thought of doing this, though haven't pulled the trigger yet)

Benetti's Coffee
Website: http://benettiscoffee.com/
Location: Raytown, Missouri

Name says it all. It's a small coffee shop in Raytown, not far from my house, that I've been going to for a couple of years. The staff is wonderful. Several of which have turned into great friends of mine. From the first day, they asked my name, and remembered it. Their drip coffee is always different and they do a great job of helping you understand their passion for their business. They roast all their own coffee on site and at their 2nd offsite roasting facility for some larger orders.

Their coffee is top notch as well as their service. They aren't afraid to make something for you, so don't be afraid to speak up a request. Even if you just say I don't know "surprise me" they can do so with some of the best drinks I've ever had. Period.

They offer free wifi, of course, as well as some small foods. I.E. sandwiches, breads, fruits, oatmeal and such. They will be more than happy to tie in your food choice with a coffee drink as well. Just ask.

I have never seen the need to go to another shop, although I have tried. None compare to the homely feeling I have going to Benetti's. If you all want to head up there - shoot me a PM. If I have time, I'd be happy to meet up with ya for a little chill time.

My macchiato from the other day.

Boulevard/75th rank high, would also add Cosentino's to that list. It is a price chopper yes, but i know the family that owns the place and they are an extremely nice family with good values at the core. Always like the atmosphere and the people they hire as well...

Tassos
Greek restaurant
Kansas City, MO

Probably my favorite place to eat in town. The food is amazing, the atmosphere superb, and the entertainment fantastic. I could sit there for 2 hours on a Friday night and not even notice because I was too busy gorging myself on delicious greek food, being fed shots of Ouzo by Tasso himself, chanting Opa with the rest of the place every 10 min or so, breaking plates on the dance floor, watching the belly dancer, and listening to a 2 man band with a singer that sounds like Neil Diamond. So what if I drop a bill every time I have dinner for 2 there. It's well worth it!

I will break mine down differently:

Food= Minskys: may not be the best pizza, but it is 10x better than any of the chain delivery pizzas and not too much more $

Automotive= Split between VAMP/Mustangs Plus. Being a Mustang guy, these were my 2 favorite places to get parts.

Beverages= BOULEVARD
