Default What are you guys doing for surround sound?

My z906 system is on the fritz and my center channel audio is coming and going with the L/R/C connectors and so I've had to switch to optical which only gives me 2.0 and simulated 3D which isn't good for most games. I've been having to use my 7.1 headphones almost exclusively lately.

While the headphones are nice, I don't want to have to use them in single player games or other games where I don't need the MIC.

Looking at 5.1 systems, options are shit these days. Is the market for headphones so huge that people just don't care about surround sound options anymore?

I don't want to spend another 300-400 bucks on another z906 system to only get 5 years or so out of it...but also don't want a cheap ass 50 watt system.

Have I missed an option you all are using?

I have a Denon AVR S720W receiver that all my media devices run through. It's capable of 7.2 however I currently only have it configured for 5.1.

I don't think many people have desk space for anything beyond 2.1 (assuming you are talking about for your computer). That's probably why there aren't many options.

I think the majority of PC gamers who wanted surround sound realized they could just build a home theater type setup and get a lot more out of it.

At my desk I'm running through an older 5.1 receiver, but right now only set up for 2.1. I might add the center channel back, but in my current space I just don't have a good way to set up the rears. Looking at potentially dropping it down to a 2.0 studio monitor setup as another option.

For the home theater/game/media room I have a Denon X1300W and a 7.1 speaker setup, it does everything I want and more. I just wish I had a better way of playing some of my PC games in there.

What are the connection options for a home theater setup?

Audio out I've got your PC component out (Front, Center/Sub, Rear) or Optical.

Brian, for your receiver you listed, the only compatible input would be optical and while the receiver is going to be able to decode for surround, it would require my computer send a DTS compressed output which very few games I've encountered actually do.

Most of the time, the actual output through optical ends up being 2.0. I can tell because on my Z906, when using optical, the control unit will display the source...if it's a DTS, the decode light will engage and then I'll ACTUALLY get 5.1 through optical. The rest of the time, "stereo" lights up and I can manually select 3D, 4.1 or 2.1. Using 3D gives me 5.1 but it's SIMULATED 5.1....as far as a game goes, I'm only hearing left and right. it's not truly giving me front/rear/center.

I don't think gamers who are using a home theater setup realize this and just assume it's working right...but it's not....not unless the developer coded their audio for DTS. Borderlands for example does...but none of the more recent games I've played do.

I use headphones about 80% of the time just because its easy and im usually on voice chat with people playing games
having a standalone mic and desktop speakers always gave me issues

Still rocking my Logitech Z-5300's on the desk though for tunes when im working around the house.

I run HDMI to the receiver from my GPU, as this allows DTS, Dolby, etc. Optical cannot handle those formats in a lossless setup. Can take some trickery to keep your GPU from thinking you actually have a second monitor on that HDMI though.

This is another reason why I was thinking of just sticking to 2.0/2.1 at my desk. Now that I am down to just one monitor, not on HDMI, it's just easier to manage that output.

HDMI to my Yamaha receiver, then to TV. I do have handshake issues I believe from time to time. But it's rare, and turning the TV and receiver off/on normally fixes it. Sometimes I have to shut the PC down, and sometimes I have even setup the surround again.

A used receiver and some cheap bookshelfs should do what you want, if you are able to run an HDMI separate from you monitor cable like 95prelude said.

I'm not able to do HDMI because I'm running 1440P and 144hz which requires higher bandwidth than HDMI can provide, so I have to use displayport, so unfortunately that's not an option for me.

Do they not make sound cards with HDMI out?

Ok, well that's like a 300 dollar sound card + the cost of the receiver + speakers sooooo..that's not very feasible for what I'm trying to do lol. I might as well buy another z906 and not have to jump through any hoops.

I'm going to just keep limping along what I have now I think and just have to use the headphones for games where spacial audio is needed. Thanks for the feedback guys.

he was not implying that you run your monitor through the receiver, just that you use it for audio. So you'd have your monitor on your gpu's displayport and use its hdmi port to connect to a receiver.
