Default Town Topic, Winstead's ... 'Best Burgers'? Really?

  • Angela C. Bond
  • The signature burger at the Jacobson in Kansas City is a lot more costly than a Winstead's burger, but has a lot more class.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the cheeseburgers at Town Topic and Winstead's, two of Kansas City's most beloved and iconic burger joints. But I'm not sure that I would go so far as to name their signature burgers to the roster of the "best burgers in the United States," as the website The Daily Meal did on Tuesday.

One of my personal burger favorites in the metro is LC's Hamburgers at 7612 N.W. Prairieview Road in the Northland, which is, I'm sorry to report, temporarily closed after a fire last night. It would rank high on my list of great burgers in Greater Kansas City. In fact, I'm craving one right now.

My other recommendations for such a list would have included the Jacobson Burger at the Jacobson (2030 Central), the cheeseburgers at the Westport Flea Market (817 Westport Road), the double cheeseburgers at the Humdinger Drive-In (2504 East Ninth Street), the dry-aged steakburger at Anton's Taproom (1610 Main), and the double Angus cheeseburger at Burgers & Chicks, 5018 N.E. Parvin Road.

But I'm much more interested in hearing where you, Fast Pitch readers, go for the burger that you consider to be the best in the metro. Maybe I'm wrong and you feel that the Daily Meal was on the money with Town Topic and Winstead's. Or perhaps you have a suggestion that trumps all the great burgers we've mentioned so far. Give us your opinion in the Comments section.

Christy's Tasty Queen should have been toward the top, best double cheese burger in town.

The Grandstand Kelly Burger is my favorite "traditional" burger.

My favorite gourmet burgers are:

The Bravo at Beer Kitchen (in Westport).
The Goatye and the Baby Bella at Burg & Barrel (76th and Metcalf)
The All American Kobe at Blanc Burgers & Bottles (Westport, Leawood)

Honorable mention:
The Knob Hill at BRGR (Prairie Village)

The all american Kobe at blanc burgers is probably the best Burger I've had. I do enjoy the blue peppercorn Burger at granite city also

Fail, should have picked up a goober burger @ the wheel. or the fried pork tenderloin at the dairy bar in Cole camp.

Kansas city burger wise. I hold this little hole in the wall as one of the best.

Your advice is solid.

I have not been to The Wheel, but have heard it is VERY good. When I Googled them on the way down I saw conflicting info on whether or not they were still open, so I took the safe route and didn't try to drive by The Wheel.

Grandstand smashes flea. Still surprises me how overinflated the rep for flea is. It's not that good.

Considering the flea market uses quality meat from mcgonigels I would say their burgers are shit, IMO. I Dont even think they season them.

I am down with pretty much anywhere that has proper seasonings and you can tell the burger is not a formed then frozen patty.

Every burger I've had from Grandstand was a bit burnt and overly dry. Same with the fries.

I know the exact safe route you are talking about, taking a right turn just before the walmart, The wheel moved a few years ago, they are not at the corner on limit street anymore. They are more towards the edge of the city now.

I take it you have been to the dairy bar in Cole Camp then?

At 3am, and half drunk, the Town Topic burger IS the best burger in KC.
At 3pm, and totally sober, it is not even close.

In KC I would say my favorite is Grandstand for a traditional burger. I love the burgers at the burger stand in lawrence, however I have to say that Beer Kitchen and The Foundry have some amazing burgers, as does westport flea market. The Kobe at burger stand is hands down the winner.

The wheel is now closed down. Went through there on Memorial weekend.

Really? Damn, that sucks! I knew they moved from the original location. I googled it and you are right, they closed in October. That's a shame.

Oh well, the pork tenderloin sandwich at the Cole Camp dairy bar beats a goober burger any day of the week.

Yeah I honestly think the new location and no 'wheel' ended up killing it. Had a good run through.

I usually don't go through Cole camp but might have to give that a place a shot soon!
