The spirit of tequila lives in this new brew from Boulevard. (Boulevard Brewing Company)

To create its Tequila Barrel Lime Gose, Boulevard Brewing Company acquired a truckload of freshly emptied tequila barrels from various distilleries. The brewery aged current beers in the barrels to assess the character the barrels would provide. Next, the brewing team decided to brew a German-style gose infused with lime peel. Traditionally, gose is a top-fermented German style with a characteristic lemony sourness and salty finish.
According to Ambassador Brewer Jeremy Danner, Boulevard’s Tequila Barrel Lime Gose presents “aromas of oak, vanilla and caramelized banana with bright lime character” followed by “subtle tequila notes and coconut.” Flavor-wise, acidity is accented by “hints of coriander and sea salt” with notes of citrus, malt sweetness, and a “touch of heat provided by tequila barrel-aging.”

Interesting news from Boulevard:

While we’ve typically shared the next year’s release calendar at the end of the previous year, we’ve made the decision to move away from that practice this year and moving forward. While we enjoy operating at the highest level of transparency possible to give our loyal fans the most and best information we can, we’ve found that in the interest of doing so, it’s possible that we’ve rushed ourselves in committing to beers and release dates while potentially sacrificing the ability to remain nimble and react to emerging trends and requests from beer drinkers.
Beginning in 2018, we’ll no longer share a full calendar of beers with forecasted release dates. Instead, we’ll tell the story of each beer as we conceive, brew, package and taste it (at several steps along the way, of course). We feel this shift in thought will allow us the time and opportunity to truly focus our attention on each beer as it comes our way from both a brewing and production standpoint as well as a sales, marketing and distribution approach. Taking the most time possible with each individual beer allows us to tighten our focus on making the absolute best beers we can while delivering optimal experiences for loyal beer drinkers. For return limited release and seasonal beers, we’ll add a general release period to each beer’s profile on our website noting the season in which you’ll typically see the beer on shelves and draft walls.
Seems fair.

Boulevard - Rye On Rye On Rye On Rye

We brought you release details on this beer, and now we bring you the latest packaging. This is Rye On Rye On Rye On Rye and it will be part of the Brewhouse One Series from Boulevard. The beer is a rye ale aged in Rye Whiskey barrels over and over and over again. This is the 12oz bottle and here are the full details from Boulevard:
Dating back to 2010, our brewing team has long loved the effects imparted by aging a big, tawny rye beer in rye whiskey barrels. Rye on Rye, our first release that was aged exclusively in freshly-emptied Templeton Rye barrels, lead us to brew Rye on Rye X – Sazerac and ultimately, Rye on Rye on Rye, a double barrel-aged version of Rye on Rye. Never content to say, “Enough is enough” our brewers have taken things one (possibly final yet crazy delicious) step further with the exploration of Rye on Rye and we’re excited to share that Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye will be our next Brewhouse One Series release.
Pouring deep garnet in color, Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye pops with aromas of spicy, fruity rye malt and massive notes of rye whiskey, vanilla, toffee and charred oak. Certainly warming at 15.5% ABV, Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye is of medium body offering chewy caramel/toffee malt character balanced by earthy, herbal, citrusy Styrian Golding and Citra hops that give way to sweet, spicy rye whiskey character in a slow sipper that blurs the line between beer and whiskey.
Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye was created using the following aging regiment:
First Aging – 10 Year Canadian Rye Whiskey barrels – 1 year
Second Aging – Templeton Rye barrels – 6 months
Third Aging – Woodford Rye barrels – 6 months

Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye is 100% barrel-aged.
Characteristics
ABV – 15.5%
Bitterness – 21 IBUs
Color – 58 EBC

Pairings
Whiskey Braised Pork Belly, Jambalaya, Fancy Reuben Sandwiches, Salted Caramel Ice Cream, Bread Pudding, Bold Cuban Cigars

Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye will be available exclusively at the Boulevard Tours & Rec Center during a ticketed bottle release party on March 11th where attendees will have the option to purchase up to four additional bottles of this latest Brewhouse One Series release for $12 each. Individual 12oz bottles will go on sale to the general public at 10am on Monday, March 12th in our gift shop with a limit of four bottles per person. $1 from every bottle of Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye sold will benefit Rose Brooks Center and the work they do to break the cycle of domestic violence so that adults, children, and their pets can live free of abuse.

Unfiltered IPA Debuts

Over the past few months, our brewers have been experimenting with variations on IPAs that challenge the common perception of what an IPA is. No longer featuring massive, palate wrecking bitterness, a new breed of IPA has emerged that focuses less on piling on IBUs and more on providing bright, juicy tropical fruit character gained by late hop additions and dry-hopping, processes that result in a greater extraction of hop compounds that contribute flavor and aroma as opposed to grassy/green bitterness.
In creating Unfiltered IPA, our brewers began with a soft malt base featuring our two-row pale malt and a touch of Carapils to provide a platform from which tropical fruit flavors, notes of melon and pear, citrus and passion fruit leap thanks to massive additions of El Dorado and Galaxy hops late during the boil and in dry-hopping.
Pouring a slightly hazy, honey golden color, Unfiltered IPA bursts with super bright fruity aromas that give way to pineapple, mango, stone fruit and candied hop flavors. Finishing with subtle malt sweetness, our newest IPA lingers on the palate with echoes of El Dorado and Galaxy hops.
Hops
Ekuanot - Kettle
El Dorado – Kettle & Dry-hopping
Galaxy – Kettle & Dry-hopping
Flavor Profile
Aroma – Super bright, explosive, tropical fruit
Malt – Soft, subtle
Hops – Juicy, dank, resinous
Balance – Hops!
Body – Light to medium
Characteristics
Alcohol by Volume – 6.4%
IBUs – 50
Color – 11 EBC
Pairings
Pomegranate chicken with jasmine rice, carrot cake, Thai red curry, spicy pulled pork
Unfiltered IPA is a draft-only release that drops starting in the Greater Kansas City Area on April 30th with other regions to follow soon.

Boulevard and Zipline: A Neighborly Dust-Up

Midwest brewers have fun with hop dust
April 25, 2018 – Kansas City – Boulevard Brewing of Kansas City, MO and Zipline Brewing of Lincoln, NE today announced the approaching debut of a unique collaboration. As the basis for experiments in adventurous IPAs, the brewers employed lupulin powder, aka hop dust, to create two flavorful, complementary limited release beers. Boulevard’s Linkin’ Up Hop Dust IPA and Zipline’s Gettin’ Down Hop Dust Double IPA will hit shelves and taps throughout the breweries’ home markets in early June.
“We have great respect for Zipline Brewing,” said Boulevard brewmaster Steven Pauwels. “Like us, they’ve been successful because of the quality of their beers and their connection to their community. It’s always rewarding to bring talented people together to play and to learn from one another.”
“As the leading brewery in our region, Boulevard continues to impress and to pace our industry," said Tom Wilmoth, co-founder of Zipline Brewing. "Our common values and philosophies about designing, brewing, and sharing beer quickly led to Linkin’ Up and Gettin’ Down. We hope everyone will have the chance to enjoy both beers, which are awesome individually, but, like most of us, even better together.”
Each brewery put its own spin on the concept. Boulevard’s Linkin’ Up includes a liberal dollop of hop dust and a medley of favorite varietals that deliver bright, juicy notes of pineapple, mango and bubble gum. Linkin’ Up will be available in kegs and 6-packs of 12-ounce bottles. Zipline’s bold Double IPA, Gettin’ Down, will roll out in kegs and 750ml bottles. It features Galaxy hops and Mosaic hop dust to produce a dank flavor profile of lychee and tropical fruits for what Zipline hopes is an out-of-this-world experience.
A number of events are in the works for Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, and the greater Kansas City area. Check the breweries’ websites and social media channels in the coming weeks for details.

Boulevard Brewing Says “Yes We Can!”

Kansas City brewery debuts new packaging line
April 20, 2018 – Kansas City – Boulevard Brewing Company today announced that its long-awaited canning line has been installed and fully commissioned. The $10 million project consists of a 24,000 square foot Canning Hall adjacent to the brewery, housing a high speed line capable of filling up to 350 12-ounce cans per minute. Engineered with flexibility in mind, the line is able to produce a variety of can sizes and package configurations.
“In recent years, much of the growth in high-end beer has been in cans,” said Boulevard president Jeff Krum, noting that craft beer drinkers are attracted to the perceived environmental advantages of aluminum versus glass. “We’ve coveted a canning line for quite a while, but we were determined to take our time and do it right. Now, with this new state-of-the-art system added to our existing keg and bottle lines, we’ve got our packaging bases fully covered.”
Finkle + Williams served as project architect. Kansas City-based MillerStauch Construction was general contractor. Key equipment and operational expertise was supplied by Krones AG.
The can line is already producing 12-packs of KC Pils and Pale Ale, the two newest additions to the portfolio. Seasonal offerings of Hibiscus Gose and Berliner Weisse will be can and draft exclusive. Other beers available in aluminum cans include Unfiltered Wheat, American Kolsch, Jam Band, Tropical Pale Ale and Ginger Lemon Radler.

Allegro Non Troppo

Following up on the delicious fun we had brewing and sharing Requiem for a Pancake, One Love - Imperial Stout Aged in Jamaican Rum Barrels and Rye on Rye on Rye on Rye, our previous Brewhouse One Series releases, we're excited to announce that it's almost time to share another new, special beer with you, our friends and neighbors!
Allegro Non Troppo began life as the Belgian-style golden sour ale we brew to create Love Child blends. Following primary fermentation with our house Belgian yeast strain, the base beer was aged in neutral wine barrels for an average length of 18 months with a mixed culture of lactobacillus and brettanomyces. Following this period of barrel-aging/fermentation, the sour Belgian-style golden ale was transferred onto 2,000 pounds of crushed Tempranillo grapes in a stainless aging tank to rest for five months.
Allegro Non Troppo pours an electric magenta hue boasting rustic aromas of black currant, forest floor and leather. This magnificently complex sour ale features a bracing lactic acidity with notes of ripe blackberries, bright red raspberries and a touch of lemon. Allegro Non Troppo finishes quite dry with airy, effervescent carbonation and a lingering tannic character from the Tempranillo grape skins.
Characteristics
ABV - 11%
Bitterness - 6 IBUs
Color - 12 EBC
pH - 3.51
Pairings
Beemster X.O with fresh berries & mint leaves, dark chocolate raspberry cordials, strawberry rhubarb pie, roasted leg of lamb with rosemary & lavender, beef carbonnade
Allegro Non Troppo will be available in 750ml bottles exclusively at the Boulevard Tours & Rec Center during a public bottle release on Sunday, April 22nd beginning at 10am. Bottles will be $25 each with a limit of two per transaction. Sales will take place in our first floor Experience Area, and fans who arrive prior to 10am should line up at the Tours & Rec Center front doors.
On April 22nd, we will also be celebrating Earth Day, and we are very excited to partner with Kansas City Native Plant Initiative for this Brewhouse One Series release. $1 from each bottle sold will benefit Kansas City Native Plant Initiative, and our friends at KCNPI will be in house to discuss the important work they do.

Saison Brett Returns

Saison Brett, one of our most coveted beers, returns in 750ml bottles and on draft starting in the Greater Kansas City Area on April 30th. Areas that typically see Smokestack Series Limited Release beers like Rye on Rye on Rye and Love Child blends should expect to see Saison Brett in the coming weeks.
Brewed annually since 2008, Saison Brett is a dry-hopped Belgian-style saison that is inoculated with brettanomyces at packaging to create complex suggestions of forest floor, earthy funk and tropical fruit that mingle with fruity Belgian yeast esters, peppery phenolic notes and citrusy hops. Although Saison Brett is aged in our warehouse prior to release, further cellaring (in proper conditions) will allow the brettanomyces character to develop and intensify.
Malt/Fermentables
Pale Malt – 97.3%
Malted Wheat – 2.7%
Dextrose – added during boil for a 3 degree Plato gravity increase
Hops
Magnum – bittering - added 15 minutes into the boil
Cascade – flavor/aroma – added at the end of the boil during transfer to whirlpool
Amarillo - flavor/aroma – added at the end of the boil during transfer to whirlpool
Amarillo – dry-hopping
Calypso - dry-hopping
Citra - dry-hopping
Yeast/Aging
Saison Brett is pitched with our house Belgian yeast strain for primary fermentation. Following filtration and transport to our off-site Smokestack Series bottling line to avoid introducing wild yeast into our main fermentation cellars, Saison Brett is inoculated with brettanomyces bruxellensis in a bottling tank designated to holding funky/sour beers. Champagne yeast (the strain we use for bottle conditioning all Smokestack Series beers) is also added at this time.
After bottling, cases of Saison Brett spend 12+ weeks in the bottle conditioning area of our warehouse at 75 F to allow the brettanomyces time to do its work so that the beer will have pronounced brett character at release. In addition to tasting samples in meetings of our expert tasting panel, our chemist analyzes Saison Brett using a gas chromatograph to measure levels of 4-Ethyphenol and 4-Ethylguaiacol, phenolic compounds that present aromas/flavors of funk/barnyard and clove/spice/smoke respectively.
Following confirmation of brettanomyces characteristics being above the average taster’s threshold, Saison Brett is released to make it out into the world! If you’re interested in learning how Saison Brett ages when stored in proper conditions, check out Saison Brett Vertical Tasting Brewer’s Blog post.
Flavor Profile
Aroma – Crisp citrus, earthy, funky
Malt – Sweet, bready
Hops – Medium bitterness
Balance – Hops/funk
Body – Light to medium
Characteristics
Alcohol by Volume – 8.5%
IBUs - 38
Color – 12 EBC

Boulevard Brewing Co. Reconsiders Its 750 ml Bottles, With an Eye Toward Craft Cans

2017 may long be remembered as the year when economic reality set in for a lot of the craft beer industry’s biggest players. As it turns out, with more than 6,000 breweries operating in the country (and hundreds more still in planning), there was a point at which the growth of the smallest segment of the market began to cannibalize the growth of established regional brands. Many breweries felt the pinch, whether they bore the “craft” label or not. Iconic brands such as Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and Boston Beer Co. were all down on the year in terms of beer sold. Even AB InBev-owned and backed breweries such as Goose Island were way down. And the less said about what happened to Green Flash, the better.
Amid all that shuffle, another quality regional brewery was also going through a downturn: Kansas City’s largest craft brewery, Boulevard Brewing Co.Dipping about 5 percent in total volume, to about 178,000 barrels, it was a year that apparently has Duvel USA executives (the owners of Boulevard, Firestone Walkerand Ommegang) rethinking several aspects of how the brewery does business. In particular, they’re reexamining the brand’s dependence upon 750 ml bottles while exploring other packaging options, and simultaneously planning to launch a new line of premium-priced beers that will target the highest price strata of the craft beer industry. All of this information comes via an excellent Brewbound interview with multiple Duvel executives.
“There’s a world of small brews, smaller ideas that we want to bring to the world,” Jeff Krum, the president of Duvel USA. Bobby Dykstra, Duvel USA vice president of sales, echoes the same sentiment in his own statement: “We have to become more relevant in the high-end. We have to become relevant with the young drinking-age consumers. We’ve got to be cool. We’ve got to be new. We’ve got to hit the flavor profiles that they’re looking for.”
According to Krum, Duvel USA—currently listed as the fifth largest craft beer producer by the Brewers Association thanks to the combination of Boulevard, Firestone and Ommegang—was several years ago the country’s single largest producer/supplier of 750 ml bottles, but that is now the area of the company in steepest decline. The company will respond by redistributing around half of the 30,000 barrels of beer it had planned for 750 ml bottles into smaller format bottles. It’s a familiar move, the same thing having been done by Firestone Walker. As Firestone brewmaster Matt Brynildson said about the shift to smaller bottles when we interviewed him in 2017, “I’ve never liked the beer industry standard of putting the biggest, highest ABV beers into the biggest containers. This just seemed like the best pure way to get as much barrel-aged beer as possible to the widest possible group of our fans.”
Meanwhile, the unnamed new series of premium releases will project to sell for $20 or more, but will offer a great degree of freedom in terms of packaging—including 750 ml bottles, 4-packs of 12 oz bottles and—our favorite—”individual small bottles.” Many will take advantage of the company’s barrel-aging program, such as the company’s eclectic seasonal sour series, Love Child.
At the same time, it’s not as if Boulevard will be completely ignoring the more accessible side of the market. The company hopes a $10 million canning line investment will help amp up production and boost sales of canned core brands, which currently make up about 20 percent of production. Some of these include the brand’s fastest growers, such as Jam Band Berry Ale, but also it’s biggest loser—flagship Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat, which was down in 2017.
“I think cans someday could be the majority of our package business,” Dykstra said.
Hopefully, Boulevard will be able to find the balance they’re seeking, and a return to single digit growth. For more information, check out the full interview at Brewbound.

Boulevard Tough Kitty Milk Stout Returns

From Boulevard:
Tough Kitty Milk Stout, a favorite new seasonal beer that first debuted in 2017, returns starting in the Greater Kansas City Area on August 6th with other regions to follow soon! The third Tasting Room beer to formally enter our lineup (following in the footsteps of Ginger Lemon Radler and Heavy Lifting IPA) Tough Kitty was born as a 35 bbl test batch available exclusively in our Tasting Room and Beer Hall before graduating to our Sample 12 Pack where it received rave reviews.
Tough Kitty Milk Stout features layers of caramel and chocolate malt complexity provided by Cara 120, Cara 300 and Patagonia Black Pearl. The addition of rolled oats in the mash tun and lactose, commonly referred to as milk sugar, in the wort kettle lend a round, silky mouthfeel to the beer. Subtle hopping with Bravo and Cascade creates just enough bitterness to prevent the beer from being overly cloying. Deep black in color, Tough Kitty opens with aromas of bittersweet chocolate, espresso and toffee that transition to flavors of the same. The addition of lactose, a non-fermentable sugar, works with the rolled oats to deliver a creamy, lingering finish.
Flavor Profile
Aroma – Chocolate, espresso
Malt – Caramel, toffee, chocolate
Hops – Balancing
Balance – Malt sweetness
Body – Medium to full, creamy

Characteristics
Alcohol by Volume – 5.5
IBUs – 27
Color – 165 EBC

Pairings
Mexican Molé, spicy BBQ, smoked cheeses, chocolate cake, crème brulee, sugar cookies

As with all seasonal and limited release beers, please note that we do not have access to our distributors delivery schedules and will be unable to confirm when Tough Kitty is available near you. Your best bet is to give your favorite local spots a call to ask if they know if/when they'll receive Tough Kitty Milk Stout
