Default '71 Z28 RS Project

I inherited this Z28 from my uncle last year and finally got the car down to Texas this weekend thanks to my brother and parents. It's a 1971 Z28 Rally Sport car my uncle picked up in California in 1992 and parked inside.

All build sheets and such were gone, but the car is matching numbers. Glad I can verify it being a true Z car now, although it was pretty obvious it was. (8k RPM tach, hidden wipers, floor mounted gas pedal, etc.)

The goal is to convert it back to the black interior it originally was and get it running/enjoy it. Has a little rust that will need addressed, but money-wise getting the paint and body is lower priority at the moment.

Interior was gross, 20 years of being a field mouse village didn't help the scent, so I got it all the carpet out and tossed as it will be getting the correct black interior.

Pulled the valve covers and everything looked surprisingly good.

Matching numbers.

Few shots of the rust on the quarter and fender.

I like. Gonna build the motor any or just refresh it? And what type of wheel/tire setup you planning?

Just refresh if anything since it's the original motor to the car. I believe there is an intake manifold correct to the car back at the farm, so I'll probably go that route.

Just going to do factory 15" rallys as I really love the way the factory wheels looked on these. Probably will just do a BFG Radial T/A or similar raised white letter tire.

Yeah, it's relatively rust free, which makes sense as it was in California until he bought it, and it never has seen salt I'm sure. The paint is a REALLY shitty MAACO job or something, and the yellow on it isn't the actual sunflower yellow it should be, and will be again someday.

Not sure what my timeline will be, just going to start accumulating parts it needs and get the brakes rebuilt first.

The car looks to be in better shape than the trailer it is sitting on. .

That trailer is mechanically great and pulls awesome. It looking like hell keeps people from being interested in stealing it.

I like how you have 2 cars in his 3 car garage, haha. Let me know when you guys are working on it, I'd love to come over and help out, or at least bring the beer.

He only has one car.

Definitely will, although I'll mostly be messing with it on weeknights.

You going to put down some hush mat or something under the carpet when it goes back in?

I'm looking into options. A lot of the replacement carpets have sound deadening options, so I was going to poke around on NastyZ28 and see what people have had the most luck with.

The stuff I used is no longer listed on Amazon, got 100sq.ft for $140 shipped. Good luck paying that little for the other brands.

A few things:

1. Great looking project, very nice.
2. 12th photo from the bottom needs to be your new profile pic.
3. When you do paint and body please please please remember to strengthen the B-pillar where they merge with the roof line. Those points are very weak to begin with. I'm serious, look in to it. The car will thank you. Research what I'm talking about. Please remember to do this.
4. Congrats.

As cool as it would be to row some gears in it, I'm just going to stick with the TH400 and keep it original I'm thinking.
