Default Ken Block's new race car Escort Cosworth (mint)

Ken Block's New Race Car Is A Perfect Ford Escort Cosworth Group A Rally Car

If you thought Block was done with Ford when Hoonigan pulled out of World Rallycross, oh no. Ford’s not going to give up that PR-and-tire-smoke machine that easily. Now we finally know what Block’s future plans involve: one of the most insane cars of all time: a 1991 Ford Escort Cosworth Group A rally car.

The Escort Cosworth features a period-correct World Rally Championship drivetrain complete with a seven-speed sequential transmission, anti-lag, all-wheel-drive and a gigantic turbo, according to Ken Block’s announcement on the car.

He plans to take it to stage rallies and do other shenanigans with it next year, as Block does.

But one important question had to be asked b the Hoonigan crew: will it donut? Of course it will donut. Holy crap, it sounds glorious.

I can’t get enough of this car already. I’m a sucker for huge wings (and donuts) and this has one of the biggest wings ever (and can also do donuts). Please, more. MORE.

KEN BLOCK DEBUTS HIS 1993 FORD ESCORT RS COSWORTH RALLY CAR

Driver to return to WRC after four-year absence

Last year, Ken Block announced that he would no longer race full-time in the World RX rally series. But he’s not ready to retire from rallying completely, of course. The Gymkhana star will compete in four stage rally events this year, including his first World Rally Championship (WRC) stage since 2014. In the WRC Spain rally this October, Block will pilot a 2017 Fiesta RS WRC. But it’s the car he’ll be driving in the other events this year that has us most excited: a 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth.

Originally a European-market exclusive, the Ford Escort RS Cosworth, which was built as a homologation special so that it can qualify for Group A in the WRC. Under the hood of the Escort Cosworth was a 227-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four paired exclusively to a five-speed manual and putting power down to all four wheels. Between 1993 and 1998, the Escort Cosworth won eight events as a Group A racer and two as a WRC-spec car. It was later replaced by the Ford Focus WRC.

Block’s Escort will wear a special livery created by Death Spray Custom. The rally-prepped Escort Cosworth is completely road-legal but the lack of a muffler and catalytic converter meant the side-mounted exhaust had to go in favor of a rear-mounted one. Under the hood is a modified 2.0-liter turbo-four that’s good for about 350 hp paired to a seven-speed sequential gearbox, which is right on par with other cars in its group. The car also gets its own special wheels that look very similar to the once the production Escort Cosworth wore back in the ’90s. Block is no stranger to turning vintage cars into incredible racing machines. In 2015, he built an Escort MkII with 333 hp, and last year he raced his 1,400-hp Hoonicorn 2.0 1965 Ford Mustang coupe up Pikes Peak.

In addition to the WRC race, Block plans to compete in three U.S. stage rallies with the vintage racer, including this weekend’s Oregon Trail Rally, the New England Forest Rally in the summer, and the Idaho Rally International this fall. As for how he expects to place in each event, Block says that he’s competing against modern vehicles and that the experience is more important than actually winning. He’s also more interested in seeing how the Ford Escort Cosworth does against modern vehicles in stage rallying. We’re interested, too, so we’ll be following Block’s progress a little more closely this season.

Check out the video below.

Ken Block's Ford Escort RS Cosworth Ends Up In Fire At NEFR

RIP

Something went wrong. Please make sure you added the video correctly.

The Cossie's return to rally racing was a hot one.

Ken Block’s rally racing career has always been in the limelight, but this year, his throwback Escort RS Cosworth has perhaps made even bigger waves than him. The revival of the ‘90s Ford rally racing car is a nod to the brand’s and the race’s glory in the said era, a supposed nostalgic comeback of a car that won the World Rally Championships 10 times before it was replaced by the Focus.

With that, it’s no wonder we car enthusiasts were pretty ecstatic about the name's return to the beloved motorsport. Unfortunately, it was met with a sad end this Friday while Block was racing at the New England Forest Rally, alongside long-time co-driver Alex Gelsomino.

At the Stage 4 of the NEFR, Block and Gelsomino hit a huge rock that sent them rolling twice before ending up in flames at the side of the road. The whole scene was captured on the video above, including the in-cabin footage moments before the accident. Block also posted the incident on Instagram, which included the whole story behind the mishap.

“We were running in 3rd overall in the New England Forest Rally (with a gear box problem), pressing on to finish Stage 4 when I turned into a tighter left corner and downshifted. The box didn’t shift when I wanted it to (because mechanical issue), and when it finally did, it threw me into the inside of a corner and into a big rock. That rock sent us rolling over twice. We landed on our wheels, and I was ready to get going again because we were shiny side up,” Block said, recalling what transpired before crashing.
“Buuuut as you can see, a fire started REALLY quick. Alex and I got out safely, but the car thoroughly burned right there on the stage,” he added.
Looks like a well-seasoned rally racer is still no match to a broken gearbox. Anyway, what a sad day for both fans of Block and the Ford Escort RS Cosworth. But we’re sure glad Block and Gelsomino walked away just fine from the incident.

Ken Block’s Destroyed Ford Escort RS Cosworth To Be Reborn

Ken Block has revealed that he is readying a Ford Escort RS Cosworth rally car after his ride being destroyed following a crash and fire in July.

Making the announcement on Facebook, Block said that that his reincarnated Escort will benefit from a selection of key improvements but didn’t disclose any details. A teaser of the car shows that it has a near-identical silhouette to the original rally car.
Block plans on taking the revised car on a ‘World Tour’, saying that he will compete in the car in a selection of stage rallies around the world while also doing some Gymkhana demos and more to show off the custom creation.
Before it was burnt to a crisp during the New England Forest Rally in Maine, Block’s Escort RS Cosworth was one of the most desirable race cars in his collection. It was a 1991 example originally built to compete in WRC’s Group A series.
Footage of the incident shared by Block showed the racer hitting a rock on the apex of a left-hand corner. This impact jolted the side of the Escort into the air, flipping it multiple times before it came to a rest in the trees. Immediately afterwards, the car caught fire, but fortunately, Block and his co-driver Alex Gelsomino were able to escape without any injuries.
It remains to be seen if any components of the original car will be retained at the reborn Cossie, but given that the previous one was consumed by fire, it could very well prove to be a ground-up build with an all-new chassis.
