I still to this day do not understand why BMW made a M235i & then turned around & released the M2.

That would be like saying why do they make a 335/435/340/440 when you could have an M3/M4. The M235/250 is just the turbo I6 variant of the 2 series. Why waste the time and money? These cars in stock 6MT form consistently put down ~310whp/330wtq on the Dynojet. The automatics, fractionally less. Add a catted downpipe and gain another 15whp/25wtq (no tune needed). Add a simple piggyback tune and you're at ~350whp/370wtq. That's plenty for me.

I've driven both & have two M3's. BMW became sellouts with marketing. They rebadged a 235i just like they did with the X5 & called it an "MSport". If they built a M335i I would be saying the same thing.

I just wish there was more of a drastic difference between the M235i and the M2. Especially with the new B58s in the M240i. The M car just doesn't feel like an M car should.

I think that's spot on. Now Audi and Benz are making S and AMG enhanced standard models because BMW has made so much money on their M Sport line. BMW has done a really good job at blurring the "M" badge and purpose.

i feel the exact opposite. the F10/F82/F87 are all so much different than the base models that i felt like bmw was finally trying to build a great car rather than bolting on some parts and hoping the badge works. these are the first M cars that truly feel unhinged.

"Unhinged"? Like in a good way?


After 20 months of ownership, my biggest compliant with the M235/240 is the "adaptive" suspension and the reduced grip in the front because the 225/40R18 tires. With my new wheels, I'll be able to run 245s in the front which should help. The adaptive shocks though never feel like they can achieve the right damping. It can sometimes feel like a mismatched aftermarket spring and shock combo on certain surfaces. It's not terrible, but I think I was expecting more from BMW. The M2 doesn't have adaptive shocks, it's just a typical passive system. The M3/M4 can be ordered with a cheaper passive suspension as well. IMO, that's the way to go.

A bit over 46K. Could have bought one of seven loaded M235xi's Baron had on their lot at the time at a heavily discounted price of $44K-46K (about $5K-7K off). How about 12.4@109-110mph BONESTOCK? It's a solid .3 second and 2-3mph faster than the M235 variants. Add a tune and downpipe for $2,000 and you're deep into the 11s for a car that cost under $50K (loaded and with mods), can carry 4 people, and can be driven in all conditions.

More updates and yes, I am buying from the BMW M Performance catalog to a large extent LOL. Added:

- M Performance dry carbon fiber e-brake handle
- M Performance side blades (go under the rockers, very hard to photograph, good for reducing rock chips to the sills, slightly more aggressive look)
- M Performance LSD. HOLY. HELL. The difference in traction in turns and a straightline. 30% lock-up on acceleration and 10% on deceleration.
- I vinyl wrapped the side mirrors in gloss black
- Removed one of two "over-center" springs from the clutch pedal to get better clutch feel as the stock feel is quite light and hard to feel the friction point.
- BMS 3.5" gloss black exhaust tips
- Dinantronic Sport Tuner. Adds about 30whp/40wtq. Basically puts the power in the M2 range (~330-335whp/360-370wtq) plus the car is fractionally lighter than an M2 and with a bit less rotational weight due to the smaller wheels and brakes. Quite a noticeable gain for $300 plus BT ability to switch between -3psi under stock (great for snow driving) and +4psi over stock.

The car hauls ass for what it is and the power it has. The car is still rock solid after 27 months and nearly 30K miles of ownership.
