I like mine, I needed a nice clean look for a black tie event. I spent a lot of money on my tux and shoes and had to make a quick decision on the watch. Strangely enough I got more compliments that night on my watch than anything else. To each his own guys. As for knockoffs, they are all knockoffs of divers, flyers, and military style watches. No new ideas for decades in my opinion. Here we are with the lovely bride.

What are everyone's feelings and/or experiences on buying a used watch (either from a store/pawn shop or an individual/forum)? I think I'd be too afraid I'd either be buying a watch that doesn't work quite right or isn't authentic. I understand that there are certain safeguards, but for someone that isn't educated on things to look for, I feel like I could never trust a second-hand watch. The only way I'd even consider it is if I'm buying from someone I know well with all the right documents backing up the purchase.

Also, where are some good places around town (I'm in Lenexa) that are trustworthy for good prices? As nice as it can be to cut out the middle man and save money, sometimes I feel like it would be nice to handle the watch I want in person. I have seen that most jewelry stores sell watches, but I worry about mark-ups so sales people can meet commission.

I have only bought two mid/higher end watches new (Breitling Superocean Heritage and the Air King). The balance (multiple Tudor, Rolex, Panerai, etc.) have been bought used. First and foremost, you have to buy the seller.

A lot of higher end AD's will carry used. I bought my first used Rolex from Meierottos there in KC ( https://www.mjewelry.com/ ). I could have found a little better deal, but it was decent and like you, I was nervous.

After the AD, there are a lot of used dealers out there that are trusted. A lot started, and continue to sell on forums. You can find watches a little cheaper, but most of these have some sort of guarantee, along with a good history in dealing with higher end watches. A few examples are below;

https://davidsw.com/
https://www.nashvillewatch.com

To a lot of people that buy used, it is worth the extra hundred or two, to make sure what you are getting is legit.

I would put gray market dealers (like jomashop) in this same category. You will get new watches, but being gray market, you generally will not get all of the paperwork, and they will warranty the watch rather than the manufacturer. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you are going to buy and sell high end watches, not having all of the paperwork can impact resale.

Lastly, you have forums. I have had success with this. Usually you can get the best deal, but know what you are doing and what you are buying. Research the seller. Look at feedback. Know your payment methods. As always, buyer beware.

I got a Timex Metropolitan + that tracks steps, % to goal, Distance, and connects to an app on your phone that keeps a comparative table of those stats. I used to use a Jawbone but it died. I like this much better since I already wear a watch. It looks a lot like the Expedition married to the Flyback. I love it so far, its pretty cool for the price.

I am going to start banking for my grail. It will take a while. A Rolex Yachmaster 2. I don't sail, dive, or fly, but I love all of it!

I've been thinking about doing some downsizing. I've noticed two habits about myself:

1. I tend to wear the same watch for weeks if not months in a row. The number of watches I own is pointlessly high for my needs.
2. My expensive watches get very little wear.

My "high end" watches are all Rolex sport watches, so fairly bomb proof. They're also well insured. But it's been a few years and I still can't quite get comfortable with wearing that much money on my wrist. I'm a fairly active person and do a lot of rough and tumble things. I know my watches can take it but I find wearing them to be more of a constant worry than a pleasure.

Any advice on getting over myself or is it time to let go? I don't need the money but I have a lot of other hobbies (and retirement) where it may be better served at this point.

Let me know first and foremost....and then I would say secondary market is your best bet to toss them up and sell them quick. I get it, I wear my 1k watch and sometimes cringe. However if I am start to move up in the company it will be less worrisome for me.

Bunch of vultures.

I'm certainly not rushing to any decisions but I just paid my insurance premium again for watches I don't really wear and it got me thinking. If I make a move I'll post here for certain.

Ever since I noticed this watch (Connor McGregor rocks a +$50k version of this), I've wanted one too. Unfortunately, I never see myself with one as I could easily see that money going in to retirement investment, or saving for my newborn's college fund. But I can still dream right?

I've had my eye on an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600 M. It's the absolute most I would ever consider spending on a watch, and it's gorgeous.

I am not sure I will ever have enough either, but it is good to identify it so the quest begins!

Picked what what appears to be the only Seiko SARN001 for sale in the world. It's on a barge from SE Asia headed this way.

I got my 9094 ($79.00 on Amazon). I love it. It should hold me off until I am able to step up my watch game.

Here are a few details about this Submariner Homage:

Automatic Seiko NH35A SII movement
It runs at 21.6k bph (6 ticks per second) and has 24 jewels
Display Back case
Water Resistant to 200 meters
40 mm case
48mm lug to lug
20mm lug width
13mm tall
Double clasp

Observations:

Lume is meh
Keeps time nicely, no dramatic issues, looks lie a few secs ahead a day
Wears well, very comfortable
Screw down crown seemed flimsy, but worked well
band is lightweight, comfortable but almost cheap feeling
Bezel movement is sharp (unidirectional)
The color is intoxicating, quite the distraction!

Well, ordered a new one today. Ordered the new limited Seiko Prospex Blue Lagoon Samurai (the one on the right in the link below). It seems to be the harder to get one at the moment and will be the second seiko I have bought (the first being the SARB065 Cocktail Time). Interested to see it come in. There has been a bit of buzz going on about it. Considering picking up the turtle model too. If nothing else, it would be neat to put in the closet and hang on to. I am just not a fan of the bracelet or the day on the dial of the Turtle. I love the case though.

I really like the samurai but I like the turtle having the crown at 4 o'clock. I have a Seiko solar diver chronograph and the crown has been digging into the top of my hand if I wear it weeks on end.

Thats a good looking watch. I just had some good things happen at work, so that Air King might be coming faster than I thought.

Something about that turtle is just old school cool. Someone said Meierottos had the Turtle in stock, but not the samurai.

Post pics! For what it is, it is a pretty good deal in comparison to the other Rolex models. I am wearing min today.

I bought the Seiko SARN001 on a leather strap. It's generally sold on a steel bracelet and I don't care for straps in general. Before I made the purchase I called Seiko USA to confirm they could order a bracelet for it. Being that the watch was only sold in Japan, they had to ship it from there. With that news I pulled the trigger on the watch, ordering the bracelet at the same time.

Today Seiko called me back and said that the bracelet was not in stock and no longer in production. I guess it took the carrier pigeon a while to reach Japan.

... Fuck.

Now I have over a grand invested in a watch I will never wear. A GMT with day/date is basically my grail and I was going to unload about everything else I owned. Now I'm not sure what to do.
