Default Warner Bros. Sign A Director For ROBOTECH

You might say, no Robotech, no Pacific Rim - and you could add a Hell of a lot of other properties while you're at it. According to THR, Nic Mathieu has been chosen to helm a big-screen adaptation of the classic robots VS aliens Anime..

For those not familiar with Robotech...just read the Pacific Rim synopsis! But seriously, this anime paved the way (unless I'm mistaken?) for the whole giant robot VS Alien malarkey that seems to be such a big trend in Hollywood right now. The movie has actually been in development at Warner Bros. since 2007, and has seen a host of writers come and go, but this is the first time a director has officially been signed. Akiva Goldsman and Tobey Maguire will produce along with Matthew Plouffe, Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell. This will mark Nic Mathieu's - a commercial director - first movie gig, but he is also attached to direct The Wind, a David Keopp-written sci-fi project that WB picked up on the strength of his presentation. It looks like we're in for a lot of metal-V-alien carnage over the next couple of years. You game?

I used to watch it after school and loved it. Rented it out as an adult and it barely made swnse, haha. Still loved it, though.

Robotech Movie Being Developed; Andy Muschietti Eyed To Direct

According to Deadline, a Robotech live-action film is back in the works. Warner Brothers-based producers Hollywood Gang have already selected a screenwriter and have an eye on who they want to direct it.
They've brought on Michael Gordon, who wrote 300 and G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, to write the screenplay. Rumor has it, they want Mama director Andy Muschietti to helm the project.
Ever since Warner Bros. acquired the film rights back in 2007 they have tried several times to get a Robotech film off the ground, but haven't had any luck. At one time, Tobey Maguire ("Spider-Man") was going to produce and star in the film, and in 2013 it was even reported that Leonardo DiCaprio turned down Star Wars VII to pursue the lead in Robotech. Hopefully, this new attempt will prove to be more fruitful.
Robotech was a fairly-popular anime series back in the '80s. It was produced by Harmony Gold and what made it unique was that it was created by editing together separate anime series from Tatsunoko Studios: Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross. The 1985 show was set in 1999 and begins with a large alien spacecraft crash landing on the Earth. The humans analyze the wreckage and use the technology to created "Robotechnology," which helps them against future alien invaders. The show spawned toys, video games, an animated film and even comic books.

ROBOTECH Finds Its Director In IT Helmer Andy Muschietti - What's That Mean For JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK?

It's being reported that Sony Pictures has found a director for their adaptation of the classic anime Robotech in IT helmer Andy Muschietti, who was previously being courted for Justice League Dark.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Sony Pictures has tapped Andy Muschietti to helm their upcoming film adaptation of the '80s anime Robotech.

The story takes place in a time when Earth has developed giant robots from technology collected of an alien spaceship that crashed on a South Pacific island. These robots are then used to defend mankind when the planet is threatened by an alien invasion.

Last we heard, James Wan had signed on to helm the long-gestating project, but according to this report, he chose to drop out due to his commitments on Warner Bros.' next DC solo feature Aquaman, which is currently filming in Australia with stars Jason Momoa & Amber Heard in the lead roles.

Muschietti, whose past credits include Mama & It, was previously rumored to be the frontrunner to land the Justice League Dark directing gig, but it's now uncertain whether those talks are still ongoing or whether WB has decided to go in a different direction. With San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, let's hope we get an update one way or another by the end of this weekend.

‘Robotech’ Zeroes In On New Writer: ‘Wonder Woman’ Scribe Jason Fuchs

We’ve been writing about a potential Robotech movie since 2007, when Tobey Maguire was planning to produce a big screen adaptation of the classic anime series. Ten years later, it seems like the movie finally has the right combination of talent attached in order to get it into production. Sony hired It filmmaker Andy Muschietti to direct, and now they’ve scooped up writer Jason Fuchs, hot off of Warner Bros.’ mega-hit Wonder Woman earlier this summer, to write the screenplay.

Deadline brings word about Fuchs’ hiring, including the tidbit that he’ll “be working with Muschietti to create the new Robotech from scratch.” This sounds like it matches up with what I learned recently in conversations with It co-writer Gary Dauberman: namely that Muschietti has a strong vision for the way he wants things and he works very closely with his writers to make sure that’s achieved, going as far as to personally sketch out visualizations to show them exactly what he has in mind.
The 1985 Robotech anime series ran for 85 episodes and was actually constructed by combining sections from three Japanese different shows and crafting new dialogue to tie them together into a cohesive whole. It takes place in the future, when Earth’s brightest minds have used alien technology to build giant robot mechs…something that comes in handy when another alien race invades the planet. Blockbuster-sized battles ensue, so it’s easy to see why Sony (who seems to be struggling to launch a suitable franchise these days) would be interested.
As long as Warner Bros. gives an official green light to It: Chapter Two – something we expect to happen any day now considering the first film’s industry-shocking mega-success – Muschietti will direct that sequel before he tackles Robotech, so that should give Fuchs plenty of time to get this script into shape. The writer’s previously produced credits include Pan and Ice Age: Continental Drift, and he’s also been acting since the mid-90s. And I just learned this, but hilariously, he played a character named Carlo in La La Land, the screenwriter that Emma Stone’s Mia meets at a party; he brags to her about how he has “a lot of heat right now” and “a knack for world-building.” That joke was hilarious on its own, but it’s even funnier knowing that an actual screenwriter plays that throwaway role.
Barbara Muschietti, Andy’s sister, will produce alongside 300 producers Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari. We’ll keep you posted as soon as casting announcements start to roll in for this one, but in the meantime, leave your fantasy casting picks in the comments below.
