Default Hyundai "GENESIS" brand

Hyundai will launch Genesis brand in December

Lineup Will Consist Of Six Products By 2020

Hyundai is about to go global with a new, high-end sub-brand called Genesis. Rumors of this spinoff have been swirling for years, but an announcement Tuesday confirms that the Genesis brand will launch in December of this year.

"To elevate and differentiate the Genesis brand from Hyundai, a distinct design identity, emblem, naming structure, and customer service offering is being established," the automaker said in a statement.

A Korean report states that Genesis will kick off with a new version of the Equus, set to launch next month, called G90. The rest of the lineup will follow suit with that naming structure (Infiniti isn't using it anymore, after all). The Genesis sedan as we know it will be called G80, and a new midsize model will be G70. A luxury SUV and sport coupe will round out the range, and all six models will launch by 2020. The rear-wheel-drive, midsize sedan is expected to debut in the second half of 2017.

In order to properly create an identity of its own, Hyundai is creating the Prestige Design Division. Beginning in mid-2016, this group will be lead by Luc Donckerwolke, who was formerly responsible for design at several Volkswagen Group brands, including Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Seat, and Skoda. Hyundai Motor Group's chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, will oversee the work of Donckerwolke's new division.

Genesis will initially launch in North America, China, Korea, and the Middle East. Hyundai says it will expand to Europe and other parts of Asia as Genesis grows.

"The Genesis models will provide technological innovation, excellent driving performance and luxury to customers. Every Genesis model will be created with the needs of our customers in mind, so the resulting car will perfectly meet their needs without any unnecessary burden or excess," said Woong-Chul Yang, vice chairman of Hyundai Motor.

Hyundai's full announcement can be found here, or in the press release below.

Hyundai Motor Launches New Global Luxury Brand, 'Genesis'

- New 'Genesis' brand will compete with the world's leading luxury car brands
- Six-model line-up begins roll-out from December catering for 'new luxury'
customers, delivering personalized and human-centered experiences
- Refined performance, athletic elegance in design and human-focused innovation
will elevate the Genesis brand

November 4, 2015 - Hyundai Motor has announced an all-new global luxury brand – Genesis – that will deliver 'human-centered' luxury through a range of new models that feature the highest standards of performance, design and innovation.

Created for a new generation of discerning consumers, Genesis will be a stand-alone brand that operates alongside the company's popular Hyundai marque. Capitalizing on its success in the fast-growing global car market, Hyundai Motor will launch six new Genesis models by 2020 and will compete with the world's most renowned luxury car brands.

The Genesis brand seeks to create a new definition of luxury, one that will provide a new platform for future mobility centered on people. By anticipating human needs at every touch point, Genesis models will embody four key aspects: Human-focused innovation, refined and balanced performance, athletic elegance in design and hassle-free customer experience.

"We have created this new Genesis brand with a complete focus on our customers who want smart ownership experiences that save time and effort, with practical innovations that enhance satisfaction. The Genesis brand will fulfill these expectations, becoming a market leader through our human-centered brand strategy," said Euisun Chung, Hyundai Motor Company Vice Chairman.

Genesis models will boast outstanding driving dynamics and design, with innovations tailored to closely-meet the needs of customers. The new model line-up will distance itself from the traditional technological overload of brand-focused competitors, concentrating instead on a personalized, hassle-free customer experience. Continuing the customer-oriented approach that flows through every Genesis model, sales and service staff will provide rapid and attentive service to customer's requests.

To elevate and differentiate the Genesis brand from Hyundai, a distinct design identity, emblem, naming structure and customer service offering is being established.

Genesis models will be badged with a new wing-type emblem, redesigned from the version used on the current Genesis model to create an even more luxurious look. This emblem firmly cements the Genesis models as a collective family of luxury models under the Genesis nameplate.

The Genesis brand will also adopt a new alphanumeric naming structure. Future models will be named by combining the letter 'G' for Genesis with a number, 90, 80 or 70 etc., representing the segment.

Woong-Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor R&D Center and Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor said, "The Genesis models will provide technological innovation, excellent driving performance and luxury to customers. Every Genesis model will be created with the needs of our customers in mind, so the resulting car will perfectly meet their needs without any unnecessary burden or excess."

Fitted with the latest proactive safety technologies, intuitive convenience features and IT connectivity, Genesis models are engineered to provide excellent ride comfort while retaining confident sportiness.

To develop a distinctive and differentiated design for the new Genesis brand vehicles, Hyundai Motor has created a Prestige Design Division. From mid-2016 Luc Donckerwolke, who was previously responsible for the design of Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, SEAT and Skoda models at the Volkswagen Group, will lead this new division alongside his role as Head of the Hyundai Motor Design Center. The work of the new Prestige Design Division will be overseen by Peter Schreyer, as part of his group-wide design responsibilities as President and Chief Design Officer (CDO) of Hyundai Motor Group.

Peter Schreyer commented, "In creating the design signature of Genesis brand cars, we set out to display confidence and originality, creating highly desirable products that present new charm through innovative styling and proportions."

The name 'Genesis', which also means new beginnings, hints at the new values and standards that the brand will bring to the global luxury car market. Initially on sale in the Korean, Chinese, North American and Middle Eastern luxury car markets, the Genesis brand will expand its reach to Europe and other parts of Asia as the model range grows to full strength.

Setting the brand's cars apart from competitors, innovation will begin with the consumer, with customer requirements directing development. This philosophy echoes the vision of Hyundai Motor to be a 'lifetime partner in automobiles and beyond', with the 'Modern Premium' brand direction of Hyundai reinterpreted for the new Genesis marque.

Hyundai's Genesis brand to offer a BMW 3-Series competitor

Hyundai's Genesis brand to offer a BMW 3-Series competitor

Hyundai Motor America CEO Dave Zuchowski has confirmed the recently announced Genesis brand will eventually offer a sedan to battle the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, and Mercedes C-Class.
Speaking to Wards Auto, Zuchowski said there is an "entry-level sedan coming" and will be about the same size as the 3-Series. He went on to suggest the model could spawn a couple of derivatives including a crossover.
Speaking of crossovers, Zuchowski countered earlier reports suggesting the Genesis brand could offer a traditional body-on-frame SUV. Instead, he says the luxury brand will have crossovers that ride on car-based platforms.
There's no word on when the models will arrive but the Genesis brand will formally be launched next year when the company introduces the G90 which will replace the Equus. The brand's lineup will eventually grow to include six models including replacements for the Genesis sedan and coupe.
Hyundai has high hopes for the Genesis brand but Zuchowski confirmed Genesis models won't be sold at every Hyundai dealer. He also said the company won't force dealers to build a separate showroom as he believes dealerships will naturally come to that decision as the brand's lineup expands and demand grows.

Ex-Lamborghini Manfred Fitzgerald to Lead Hyundai's Genesis Brand

After a twelve-year career at Lamborghini, where he played a crucial role in transforming the Italian carmaker into an even more luxurious car brand, Manfred Fitzgerald has been hired by the Hyundai Motor Company to lead the Genesis brand as the new Senior Vice President, starting with January 2016.

Fitzgerald will have to establish and execute marketing strategies as well as other business operations that will consolidate the Korean automaker’s image as a value-for-money brand and help it become a real rival in the global luxury car market.

The 52-year-old will join other non-Korean executives brought for the same purposes, such as Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, Luc Donckerwolke of Bentley, or Albert Biermann of BMW at the company’s headquarters in Seoul.

Hyundai Motor revealed the first model of its newly developed premium division earlier this month, called the Genesis G90. Although until now the company used this designation for a premium model in its range, it plans to develop an entire luxury model lineup under this name.

For the G90, Hyundai designers went for an elegant approach to the full-size luxury sedan segment. Customers will be able to choose from a broad range of engines including the 3.8-liter V6 GDi, a turbocharged 3.3-liter V6, and a 5.0-liter V8 from the Tau series.

The exterior brings new dimensions, as the new premium vehicle announces an overall length of 5,205 millimeters (204.9 in), 1,915 millimeters (75.4 in) width, and a 3,160 mm (124.4 in) wheelbase. The gross vehicle weight is between 2,420 kg (5,335 pounds) and 2,595 kg (5,721 pounds).

The Hyundai Genesis G90 features the best gizmos the South Korean carmaker has to offer, including the first clinically-validated Smart Posture Caring System - unfortunately available only in South Korea - that automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, outside mirrors and the head-up display to suit the driver’s optimal position.

Hyundai’s latest premium model will be sold in South Korea as the EQ900 starting with 2016 and on an international level from the second half of next year.

Hyundai planning luxury plug-in hybrids for Genesis line

But which model could go PHEV is a big unknown.

Ever since Hyundai split the Genesis off into its own brand, we've all been clamoring to find out what other models would join the lineup. And here we have one more piece of the puzzle. According to Automotive News, the Korean luxury brand is set to get its own plug-in hybrids. We just don't know which model or models will serve as the basis.
"We believe alternative-propulsion engines are going to be really important." - Hyundai MA CEO David Zuchowski
"Some of those [plug-in hybrids] will take the form of the Genesis side of our business," was all that Hyundai Motor America CEO David Zuchowski said. "We believe alternative-propulsion engines are going to be really important – even more important in the luxury market than they are in the mainstream market." Hyundai's Genesis brand would not, of course, be the first luxury marque to launch a PHEV. Premium brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Volvo all offer plug-in versions of their mainstream models, while others like Cadillac and Infiniti prepare to join in the near future. Hyundai and its Kia brand both offer plug-in hybrids, though nothing at the level of the Genesis or Equus that have now been rebranded in the new lineup.

So far we've seen the Genesis G80 take over from the previous Genesis sedan and the G90 take the place of the Equus. A new G70 sports sedan is slated to join soon, along with a two-door to replace the Genesis Coupe and a crossover expected to take over from the defunct Veracruz. Pictured here is the Genesis Hybrid Sports Sedan, an electrified concept that the automaker showcased at the New York Auto Show less than two months ago that previewed the brand's new design direction and 3 Series-fighter as much as any specific powertrain configuration. If we were the betting type, we'd anticipate the hybrid propulsion system to be offered first on one of the sedans, but we'll have to hold on to find out what they decide in Seoul.

Default Hyundai snags another Bentley designer

Having already lured former Bentley design boss Luc Donckerwolke, Hyundai has now managed to snag Bentley’s designer in charge of exteriors, the talented Sang Yup Lee.
The Korean designer has previously worked for the likes of Pininfarina, Porsche and most recently Bentley, however, he’s most famous for his work at General Motors Company [NYSE:GM].

Lee enjoyed a 10-year stint at GM where he was responsible for some impressive cars, including the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro and 2009's 50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray concept.

At Hyundai, he will be responsible primarily for shaping the future look of the Genesis luxury brand. Working under Donckerwolke, Lee will also help design future Hyundais.
“The innovative design and surprising growth of Hyundai Motor has always made me proud as a Korean while I worked overseas,” Lee said in a statement. “Now I want to contribute in creating world-leading automobile designs for both Hyundai Motor and the Genesis brand.”

This Is Reportedly The Future For Genesis

Taking a cue from Toyota’s playbook, Hyundai’s Genesis cars will become their own luxury brand. A leaked presentation has confirmed what we previously reported about the Genesis future lineup, and now we have vehicle names and a tentative timeline.

The Korean Car Blog was able to get an image from a product presentation which shows the Genesis product road-map for the next three years. We already know about the G90, otherwise known as the EQ900, that will be an updated version of the full-size Equus.

The G80 will soon replace the current Genesis mid-size sedan and it appears that the brand is going to go after the hyper-competitive entry level sedan segment with the G70.

Hyundai refers to this segment as “near luxury,” which seems like an appropriate term for a new brand that doesn’t yet have the name recognition like the other tier-1 luxury automakers.
Sometime between 2017-2018 Genesis will launch a mid-size luxury crossover, which could possibly be based on the Santa Fe platform that can comes in both 2-row and 3-row configurations. This would give Genesis a player to go up against popular sellers such as the Lexus RX and Acura MDX, which despite all of your burning hatred for those things still sell like hotcakes. Hotcakes are still a thing that sell, right?
Anyway, around 2020 Genesis is planning a compact crossover (near luxury) that could come from the Tuscon. Given how hot well small luxury crossovers sell, it does seem odd to postpone such a vehicle. Genesis is probably just trying to establish itself with some larger models first before aiming for entry level crowd.
Within this same time frame, a “near luxury” sports coupe is also in the works possibly based on the G70 compact sedan and will replace the now discontinued Genesis coupe.

Hyundai corporate has been poaching some serious talent from the Germans to pull this Genesis brand together. Breaking into the luxury car market on a large scale is a difficult task. However, Hyundai already has some of the highest loyalty among mainstream automakers. The Genesis brand, if well executed, could be an opportunity to push those returning customers up market.
We’ve reached out to Hyundai and will update if they want to confirm all of this or anything.

Genesis nabs former Bugatti designer

Genesis, Hyundai's newly formed luxury division, has announced the hiring of former Bugatti designer Alexander Selipanov. Selipanov will take up the post of Genesis' Chief Designer in early 2017.

"I am sincerely excited about this opportunity, because it will be a new chapter in my career. As I have been working with well-established brands so far, Genesis is a new and refreshing challenge to me," said Selipanov. "In addition, I am also honored to join this exciting journey, as it is a very rare chance to launch a luxury automotive brand and be part of its history. With growing expectations and curiosity around Genesis, I cannot wait to contribute my expertise and passion to the brand."

Selipanov, 33, started his automotive design career in 2005 with a position at the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam, Germany. In 2010 he joined VW's Lamborghini division and had a hand in designing the Huracan. In 2014 he was named Head of Exterior Design, Creative at Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. While at Bugatti Selipanov was head of exterior design for both the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo show car and the Bugatti Chiron.

Selipanov's hiring is an indication that Genesis is serious about taking on established luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Genesis currently has just two sedan offerings, but the company is hoping to grow into a full-line automaker within the next few years.

Genesis GV80 concept previews BMW X5-rivaling SUV

Genesis GV80 concept, 2017 New York auto show

Genesis has given us our first taste at one of its upcoming SUVs with the GV80 concept car unveiled on Wednesday at the 2017 New York auto show.
The concept also introduces the naming strategy for Genesis’ SUVs, with the “G” representing the Genesis brand, the “V” the extra versatility of an SUV, and the “80” the positioning in the brand’s lineup.
Hyundai’s luxury brand is committed to having a lineup of six cars by the end of 2020, and two of these cars will be SUVs. The first, previewed by the GV80 concept, will be a mid-size model targeting the BMW X5. The second will be a smaller model targeting the BMW X3.
If an alleged Genesis product roadmap is to be believed, the GV80 will arrive in production form in the next year or two. By then, Genesis will already be selling its new G70 small sedan.
Genesis GV80 concept, 2017 New York auto show

Genesis’ “athletic elegance” design philosophy lends itself quite well to the SUV form factor, though it remains to be seen how much of the concept’s lines transfer over to the production model. Up front is Genesis’ “crest” grille which features a diamond pattern. This is flanked by split headlights made up of LEDs. One interesting element is the structural truss design for the roof pillars which can be seen from inside the vehicle.
The interior features an open design and is dominated by a 22-inch curved display at the top of the dash. It’s joined by a second screen that forms the main instrument cluster. The 22-inch screen presents two distinct zones, providing separate driver and passenger experiences. Interacting with the screen can be done by touching the thin metal strips in the center console. There is also a controller wheel whose center is a concave glass touchpad.
Genesis says the GV80 concept is powered by a fuel cell but hasn’t released any additional details.

#NYIAS: So, You've Seen Its EXTERIOR, How About The INTERIOR? Are You Diggin' The GUTS Of The Genesis GV80 Concept?

I have to admit that Agent 001 and I were a bit surprised by the Genesis GV80.

For some reason, it just didn't seem like Hyundai's luxury division would come out with a sport-utility vehicle this bold.

Of course given where sales are heading — right now buyers favor SUVs — it was clear that one would come along. But, you have to take note here.

New York Auto Show

**Interested in the GV80? Read all there is to know about it in the Genesis GV80 press release HERE!

After speaking with Agent 001, he gave me a pearl: Genesis' GV80 isn't reaching for the BMW X5, Lexus RX or Land Rover Range Rover. It's reaching for Bentley.

Just take a look at its exterior, which has led 001 to brilliantly coin the all-new Genesis concept, "The Gentayga." Only adding fuel to the fire is its interior, which is the definition of, well, decadent.

Get a glimpse at the best pictures of the all-new GV80's interior you'll find anywhere, right here on AutoSpies.com!

Headlights to become vestigial, says Genesis design boss

Luc Donckerwolke explains why the GV80 has such small headlights.
The Genesis GV80 concept at the New York Auto Show may have been notable for being a hydrogen-powered SUV or the brand's first luxury crossover, but there was another future trend written across its face — small headlights.

Luc Donckerwolke, head of design for the Genesis brand, believes that some time in the not-too-distant future headlights on cars will be rendered obsolete. Speaking to the Australian press, he noted that thanks to autonomous driving, cars of the future will be able to navigate roads in complete darkness.

It explains in part why the Genesis SUV's grille takes up so much frontal real estate, with only four slivers of LEDs flanking it on each side. "We are reducing the size because we are anticipating the fact that slowly cars won't need lights any more," he told Motoring.com.au.

Though lights for illuminating the road may be replaced by an array of radar and laser sensors, vestigial headlights like the ones on the GV80 might still persist as design cues.

Though it sounds far fetched, we wouldn't rule out anything Donckerwolke has to say. Having worked previously at VW Group designing Audis, Bentleys and Lamborghinis, the Belgian designer knows a thing or two about setting trends.

Genesis coupe to skip V-8 in favor of electrified powertrain

Hyundai Vision G (HCD-16) concept

One of the six cars Genesis plans to have in its lineup by the end of 2020 is a large, luxurious coupe built more for grand touring than carving up race tracks.
Unfortunately, a previous plan to fit the car with a V-8 looks to have been axed with Genesis instead favoring an electrified powertrain. The information was confirmed to Drive by Genesis design boss Luc Donckerwolke.
“As much as I like to drive V-8s, I believe electrification is going to be a main element,” the former Bentley and Lamborghini design told the Australian publication when quizzed about a V-8 being fitted to the new coupe.
He pointed to the regulatory environment as one of the key reasons for going the electrification route.
Hyundai Vision G (HCD-16) concept

“See what's happening; diesels are being banned from the cities.” He said. “Emissions have to be reduced drastically. Today a V-8 is not exactly responding to that environment.”
Separately, Manfred Fitzgerald, the boss of Genesis, told Drive that as more cars become electrified, you're going to see performance equalize among brands and thus become less of a differentiator. He gave the example of when most cars can do 0-60 mph in less than 3.0 seconds, customers will seek other attributes such as brand recognition or the design or the level of connectivity.
The Vision G concept car from 2015 hints at what Genesis has in store for its new coupe.
There are still a few years until the car arrives, however. If a leaked product roadmap is to be believed, the coupe will be the last of Genesis’ six planned cars. We’ve already seen the G90 and G80 sedans launched. Later this year we’ll see a G70 sedan join the range and after that we’ll see a mid-size SUV based on the recently-revealed GV80 concept, as well as a small SUV likely badged a GV70.

Genesis prices 2018 G80 lineup; Sport to start at $55,250

The Genesis G80 lineup gets a reorganization for 2018.
Genesis announced pricing for its 2018 G80 Thursday, giving us our first look at the model's new hierarchy.

The 2018 G80 comprises three trim levels and six total variations (each of those trims is available in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.
Each trim gets its own engine, starting with the base G80 3.8. As the name suggests, this carries over Hyundai's 311-horsepower 3.8L V6. This trim starts at $41,750. At this price, you get a host of safety and semi-autonomous features (lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, etc.) which are not often standard on large luxury vehicles.
The next step up is the G80 Sport. This model is entirely new for 2018 and is aimed at the likes of the Mercedes-AMG E43. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 3.3L V6 which produces 365 horsepower and 378lb-ft of torque. This gets to the ground via a reprogrammed eight-speed transmission.
Sport models also get a retuned suspension for improved dynamic performance. The R-Spec may be gone, but this is the G80 for the enthusiast.
There's more good news. The 5.0L V8 remains in the lineup. The 5.0L Ultimate is the range-topping trim, boasting the aforementioned 420-horsepower V8. Rear-wheel-drive 5.0L Ultimates start at $57,000 even.
Genesis is leading with the 2018 Sport model, which should be arriving in showrooms starting in May. 3.8 and 5.0 trims should start to trickle in this summer.

Genesis will not be beholden to "corporate face"

Each model will have a unique personality, designer says.
Common identifying design cues on luxury marques has been a tradition for many decades, but new kid on the block Genesis intends to buck that trend.

Whether it's BMW kidneys, the Lexus spindle grille, or Lincoln baleen whale mouth, such features give an automaker "brand identity." However, to the average buyer this often results in similar-looking models at different tiers.

"We feel like each platform deserves its own unique personality," Genesis designer John Krsteski told Motoring.com.au. Indeed, this philosophy was borne out in the recent GV80 concept, which does not resemble either existing Genesis models, the G80 or G90 (though as of now the latter two do look very similar). Genesis has already announced plans to expand the line to six models, including a G70 sport sedan, a GV70 crossover, and a yet-unnamed GT coupe.

The lack of brand identity is often seen as a negative for automakers catering to status-conscious luxury buyers, but it is one of the ways Genesis intends to distinguish itself in the hotly contested market. "We don't feel constrained to try to live up to something that was there before," Krsteski says.

Where Is Hyundai’s Genesis Brand Getting Its Buyers From? Genesis’ Spiritual Predecessor

Genesis Motors is soon to complete its first year on the U.S. market.
Through the first ten months of its run as Hyundai’s luxury spin-off, 15,254 copies of the Genesis G80 and Genesis G90 have been sold. That’s 15,254 buyers who all moved over from other auto brands. There was no other way — no repeat business, no C-Class to E-Class to S-Class-style chain reaction.
More of those buyers moved over from the Hyundai brand than anywhere else. That makes sense. The Genesis G80 is essentially a second-generation Hyundai Genesis sedan. The Genesis G90 is a second-generation replacement for the Hyundai Equus. Hyundai buyers are trading in and trading up.
But when it comes to earning conquests from luxury rivals, Genesis Motors does so most often at the expense of Genesis’ forerunner, the last brand to do what Genesis wants to do.
Lexus.
30 percent of Genesis G80 and G90 conquests come from the Lexus brand, according to Wards Auto. That’s double the number Genesis has grabbed from BMW, the next-most-often conquested brand, and nearly triple the number of conquests Genesis has gleaned from Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz.
“We don’t think that people are going to turn the switch and suddenly forget about other brands and flock to us,” Genesis Motors general manager Erwin Raphael told Wards. But if Genesis can attract the attention of buyers, “a decent percentage of them will choose us and that will be enough for us to be very successful,” Raphael says.Success, by Genesis’ measurement, isn’t the same as success for Lexus or Mercedes-Benz or BMW. Even if the forthcoming G70 sedan doubles the brand’s volume, Genesis will still be selling only 40,000 cars per year in the United States.
Mercedes-Benz USA sells nearly 27,000 cars and SUVs per month.
No, building a luxury brand from scratch will take time. Indeed, it will take more time than it ought to because Genesis is way behind the SUV/crossover trend. Based on this year’s New York International Auto Show GV80 concept, Genesis’ first production utility vehicle is still two years away.
For the time being, Genesis is fighting for a small slice of an increasingly small pie. Overall premium brand car sales are down 4 percent this year.Acura, Audi, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar Land Rover, Lincoln, Porsche, Volvo, and indeed Lexus all sell more SUVs/crossovers than cars. U.S. sales of premium brand SUVs/crossovers are up 6 percent in early 2017, claiming 57 percent of the overall premium market, up from 54 percent in the first five months of 2016.
Yet it is in that shrinking car sector where Genesis intends to initially make a name for itself, operating out of tailored corners of Hyundai showrooms. Perhaps too many Hyundai showrooms.
Incidentally, coinciding with Genesis Motors’ theft of sales from luxury brand rivals is a 29-percent decline in sales of Lexus passenger cars. No premium brand is losing car sales faster this year.

Default [제네시스(GENESIS)] LUXURY EVOLVED, GENESIS

Video URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoJmBveNHTo

Taking the route of every other major automaker, such as Nissan’s Infiniti and Honda’s Acura, Hyundai plans to separate its luxury vehicles into their own lineup marketed to different consumers. The move is intended to signal a “new start” for the automaker, headed by former chief designer for Bentley and Audi, Luc Donckerwolke. The plan involves rolling out a fresh six-model lineup of luxury vehicles by 2020 under the Genesis nameplate and emblem currently used for the mediocre-selling Hyundai Genesis (most popular in its coupe version). The Genesis brand will be a stand-alone marquee operating alongside Hyundai. Mimicking luxury brands like Lincoln and BMW, the Genesis cars will receive a numeric naming pattern–combining the letter ‘G’ with a segment number (70, 80, 90, etc).
“The Genesis models will provide technological innovation, excellent driving performance and luxury to customers,”Woong-Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor R&D Center and Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor, stated. “Every Genesis model will be created with the needs of our customers in mind, so the resulting car will perfectly meet their needs without any unnecessary burden or excess.”
Hopefully this move will save Hyundai from its continually-lowering profits, which have reached their lowest levels in five years.

Trademark filings hint at "GT" badge for Genesis coupes

Hyundai Vision G (HCD-16) concept

Genesis, like most major players in the luxury segment, has opted for the sensible albeit boring alphanumeric naming practice popularized by the German marques.
With automakers offering so many models these days, such a naming practice makes it possible for customers to easily and quickly identify where in the product hierarchy a particular vehicle sits.
Genesis uses the letter “G” plus a number to denote its sedans, with the higher the number the higher the vehicle’s positioning. At the top of the current range is a G90. Below it sits a G80 and soon a G70 will arrive. Trademark filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office show Genesis has reserved the G60 name as well.

Genesis indicated that its SUVs will use a “GV” and a number for their names with the reveal earlier this year of the GV80 concept, a mid-size SUV to rival the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. The “G” is for Genesis while the “V” is for the extra versatility of an SUV. A search of various trademark filings shows Genesis has reserved the GV60, GV70 and GV80 names, but curiously no GV90, suggesting we won’t see a Genesis SUV in the full-size category.
We know Genesis is also planning at least one coupe to help fill the void of the discontinued Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Genesis is yet to reveal its naming strategy for coupes but trademark fillings suggest the names will use a “GT” combined with a number, with the “T” here likely indicating the touring aspect of luxury coupes. Here, Genesis has reserved the GT60, GT70, GT80 and GT90 names.
So far Genesis has only confirmed it will have six distinct vehicles on sale by the end of 2020. The G90 and G80 sedans are already on sale and will be joined by the G70 small sedan later this year. According to a product roadmap that leaked in 2016, over the next three years Genesis will add a mid-size SUV, a small SUV and a small coupe. These three newcomers are likely to be a GV80, GV70 and GT70, respectively.

Genesis GT90 Trademark Application Has Our Minds Racing

@media(min-width: 300px) { .example_responsive_5 { width: 336px; height: 280px; text-align: center;} }
Hyundai's upscale Genesis brand has big plans to expand its lineup. With the G80 and G90 sedans already in showrooms, recent trademark applications give us an idea of the direction in which the Korean automaker plans on heading next.

Motor Authority uncovered several of these applications with the US Parent and Trademark Office, suggesting that both coupes and crossovers are in the works – or at least under consideration.

The applications include a series of GT nameplates, among them GT60, GT70, GT80, and GT90. Though they clearly follow in the brand's nomenclature pattern, and are sure to take a more luxury/touring approach than a pure performance direction, we can't help but recall Ford's legendary Le Mans-conquering GT40 from the 1960s and the GT90 concept from 1995, with its Bugatti-baiting 6.0-liter quad-turbo V12. We won't hold out breath for something that stratospheric, though.

For sport-utes, Genesis apparently plans on deploying the letters GV, as we saw with the GV80 concept at the New York Auto Show – the V ostensibly standing for “versatility.” The applications include a GV60, GV70, and GV80 – but no GV90 to put the brand in contention with the likes of the Mercedes GLS and forthcoming BMW X7.

We're also expecting G70 and G60 sedans to join the expanding lineup as well, moving the brand from an intriguing but limited prospect to a full-line luxury automaker.

Genesis beats BMW, Mercedes-Benz in JD Power APEAL ratings

Hyundai's newly formed luxury brand landed in the second spot, but Porsche retained the lead for the 13th consecutive year.
Hyundai's newly formed Genesis brand has entered JD Power's Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study in the second spot, while Porsche retained the crown for the 13th consecutive year.
The research firm says industry average APEAL scores increased to 810 points (on a 1,000-point scale) thanks to significant improvements in nearly every vehicle category and improved performance from 19 of the 32 brands included in the study.

The APEAL rankings gauge owners' "emotional attachment and level of excitement" across 77 different attributes, such as power and sense of comfort or luxury. JD Power suggests the gap has continued to narrow between mass-market and luxury brands, now separated by an all-time narrow margin of just 41 points.

Genesis received a score of 869, just 15 points below Porsche. The top five also includes established players BMW (855), Audi (854) and Mercedes-Benz (851), while Lincoln and Cadillac hold the sixth and seven spots, respectively.

Mitsubishi received the lowest score of 750, just two points below Fiat and 23 points behind Jeep. Other brands below the industry average include Volkswagen, Kia, Subaru, Hyundai and Toyota, among others.

"Manufacturers are making ever-higher quality vehicles, but this is not coming at the expense of performance, styling, utility or features," says JD Power vice president Dave Sargent.

Who Knew? Hyundai Makes a Luxury Car That Gets Better Ratings Than BMW or Porsche

Genesis is turning out to be one of the best-kept secrets in the U.S. luxury car market. Industry data show that relatively few upscale buyers even know the spin-off from mainstream South Korean carmaker Hyundai even exists. But those who do seem positively ecstatic, with Genesis rising to the top in recent quality and customer satisfaction surveys, well ahead of more traditional luxury brands like Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
Paul A. Eisenstein
“We’re in a great position,” Erwin Raphael, general manager of Genesis, told NBC News.
The G80 line — which includes two other variants — is already outselling the comparably sized Audi A6 and giving chase to the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes E-Class models.
A New Reputation

Say the name, Hyundai, and you’re likely to think of a compact economy car. But in recent years, the brand has moved steadily up-market, nudging into the luxury segment with its original Genesis sedan in 2009. The midsize model quickly shook up the established order, taking honors as the North American Car of the Year. Hyundai soon followed with the even bigger and more lavishly equipped Equus model.

Initially, the Korean carmaker was content to offer the two high-line models under its own badge. But that tended to confuse customers — and turn off upscale buyers who didn’t want to see their cars share the same logo as a $15,000 Hyundai Accent. Two years ago, the Koreans decided it was time to spin off the Genesis brand.
To hold down initial investments, Hyundai decided not to require dealers to set up separate showrooms. The vast majority of Genesis retailers have simply carved out space in existing Hyundai showrooms. But that’s about to change. Genesis plans to ask new retailers to set up standalone Genesis showrooms.
That’s not a cheap proposition. It’s not unusual for luxury dealers to spend $5 million or more on a showroom these days. The question is whether it will be worth the return. When the first model to carry the winged Genesis badge debuted last year, barely 1 percent of American motorists knew what the brand was, according to industry research. That has since grown to around 4 percent - but top European models have brand awareness that runs into the mid-60 percent range.
That poses a serious challenge, said analyst Joe Phillippi, of AutoTrends Consulting, but one that is not insurmountable — especially considering the way Genesis has been scoring in recent owner surveys.
Rated Better Than a Porsche

Last month, Genesis was named second-highest brand in the closely watched J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey — behind only sibling Korean carmaker Kia. It leapfrogged perennial luxury leaders like Porsche and BMW, with Mercedes-Benz, Acura, Audi and Cadillac not even coming up to the industry average in the new IQS.
Weeks later, Genesis landed among the leaders in the Vehicle Satisfaction Awards, an annual survey of owners by consulting firm AutoPacific. And the flagship G90 sedan not only outranked competitors like the BMW 7-Series, Lexus LS, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but scored higher than any product ever in the VSA.
AutoPacific President George Peterson called the results “exceptional,” and rare for a new brand and a new product to “create a new benchmark for excellence.” Perhaps the only other example of that happening in recent decades came in the early 1990s with the launch of the Lexus brand which quickly shook up an established luxury order then dominated by German and American brands.

That could happen again, said Peterson, pointing to the Genesis strategy of offering a high value for the dollar, while emphasizing customer satisfaction in both its products and its approach to sales and service. For one thing, buyers get free pick-up and delivery when a vehicle needs service or repairs, along with a free loaner.
What About a Genesis SUV?

Can Genesis repeat the success of Lexus? Not everyone is confident that can happen — at least not unless parent Hyundai is willing to invest billions of dollars to take on its well-funded luxury competitors.
If the new Korean luxury brand has taken any criticism it’s for the decision to launch with just two sedan models. That would seem to run out of sync with current market trends. Utility vehicles now make up about 40 percent of the American marketplace, and they are gaining traction in China and Korea, the two other big Genesis markets, as well.
“I think we launched the way we should,” Raphael told NBCNews. “Sedans are where luxury brands make their name,” he said, pointing to vehicles like the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series.
That said, the initial Genesis five-year plan calls for the brand to offer three sedans, two SUVs and a sporty coupe. The brand revealed a prototype version of its first ute, dubbed the GV80 Concept, at the New York Auto Show this past April. A second, smaller SUV will follow soon afterwards.
And Genesis is already looking to expand on that five-year plan, with Raphael revealing Genesis will look to fill the “white space,” other niches that German brands have been especially good at targeting. Mercedes, BMW, and Audi have launched a product offensive previously unseen in the luxury market, and they have plans to add dozens more new models before the end of the decade.
It’s unlikely Genesis will even try to match the Germans, model-for-model. But it is betting that if it can fill high-volume segments with new products that win the same sort of kudos as the G80 and G90 have, it should be able to carve out a modest, but highly profitable, niche in the luxury market.
And, as happened with the Lexus, Genesis is already sending its more established competitors scrambling, trying to figure out how to respond.

Genesis plans 3rd utility to balance lineup

The GV80 concept was shown in New York.

HWASEONG, South Korea — Genesis has promised two SUVs as part of its six-nameplate rollout by around 2020, and is now planning a third utility entry — possibly a compact crossover to tap surging demand in that growing segment.
The only hitch: Dealers and customers will have to wait until 2021.

Global brand boss Manfred Fitzgerald conceded most customers still don't know the brand.
"We still have a lack of awareness," Fitzgerald said. But additional entries, he promised, will help put Genesis on people's radar as a legitimate luxury contender.
"There are still many other white spots on the map," he said. "To get substance into your brand, you have to demonstrate the breadth of the brand."

The mystery vehicle, denoted only as "CUV," was included in a product pipeline shown reporters during a recent visit to the Hyundai Motor Group's global r&d center here.
Genesis bosses declined to offer details about the entry. But it is distinct from two previously announced SUVs. Those products are the large-sized GV80 SUV, previewed by a concept unveiled at April's New York auto show, and the midsized GV70.
The GV80 and GV70 were listed as arriving by around 2020, along with the G70 sport sedan, a face-lift of the flagship G90 sedan and a next-generation G80 sedan.

Of those, the G70 comes first, arriving later this year.
From 2021, the crossover arrives, along with a "sport" entry and a G90 full model change. A dedicated electric vehicle platform will also debut around then for a Genesis EV offering.
Fitzgerald has said it is important to establish Genesis' credibility as a premium marque through a solid grounding in sedans, the bread and butter of luxury rivals.

Genesis plans clean break from Hyundai

Raphael: Genesis dealer feedback indicated a smaller network was needed to maximize profits.

LOS ANGELES — Hyundai's fledgling Genesis marque wants out of the nest — now.
This month, the brand plans to announce a new retail strategy for the U.S. that will accelerate its separation from the Hyundai marque and significantly cut the number of dealerships authorized to sell Genesis models.

The transition, which was supposed to be several years off, likely will be messy and costly for Hyundai and the culled Genesis dealers. It comes less than two years after Hyundai announced the creation of the Genesis brand, barely a year after it officially put the G80 and G90 sedans on sale and just ahead of the launch of a critical new vehicle, a BMW 3-series fighter called the G70.
And it will require a delicate dance by Hyundai Motor America to protect its relationships with castoff dealers, who will retain their Hyundai franchises after the dust settles.
"We don't see a path forward without a good, strong dealer network that's also profitable," Genesis General Manager Erwin Raphael told Automotive News. "And we sometimes have to make

very difficult decisions in the short run in order to ensure that we take care of our ... dealers in the long run."
Genesis plans to have the framework in place by the middle of next year, it says.
The planned reset comes amid a debacle in Louisiana, where Hyundai Motor America last month grounded all sales of Genesis vehicles after allegations from the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission that the automaker and the dealers lacked proper licenses to sell vehicles under the new brand. A month earlier, dealers said, Hyundai had outlined plans to trim its Genesis network in the state to just two dealers from 13.

The automaker has nearly completed the paperwork to put it in good standing with the commission, Raphael said, attributing the problem to a hasty ramp-up.

Tangled web
Genesis’ retail network is a bit of a tangle, owing to its awkward start as a Hyundai nameplate and then a distinct brand that absorbed two Hyundai luxury models. Hyundai allows any of its 835 dealerships nationwide to sell the Genesis G80 sedan, which was formerly called the Hyundai Genesis. Of those stores, 352 also have opted to carry the larger G90 sedan, which requires them to create a showroom-within-a-showroom for the Genesis brand.

This select group emerged from Hyundai’s efforts to create a special retail environment for a top-of-the-line model that was called the Hyundai Equus before Genesis became its own marque.
Under the original plan, Genesis-only stores were to be phased in two to three years after Genesis started selling vehicles last August. Genesis planned to use them concurrently with the showroom-within-a-showroom setup, along with some dealerships that had separate sales facilities for Hyundai and Genesis but shared service centers. Those Hyundai dealers selling the G80 were then to be phased out when the next generation of the car arrived around 2019.

The updated plan moves that timetable forward by one to two years and will focus solely on separating the two makes, though details haven’t yet been made available to dealers, Raphael said.
It will shift from the store-within-a-store approach to a distinct Genesis presence.
DiFeo: Launch was too fast.

Hyundai dealers will be allowed to apply for Genesis franchises, with priority given to locations in and around urban areas.
Only full Genesis franchisees will be able to do warranty repairs on Genesis vehicles, a condition that’s certain to be a sticking point with dealers, who had expected to be able to do factory-paid warranty work on Genesis vehicles under the previous plan.
"For this brand to really survive and thrive, and for us to develop the culture within ourselves and within our dealer network to support and take care of these customers, we do in fact have to expedite our process of separating our brands," Raphael said.
Genesis has sold 11,563 vehicles this year through July.
Raphael declined to say how many stores Genesis wanted, though the number is expected to be significantly smaller than the 352 that carry the G90, according to several Hyundai dealers.
Genesis has retained outside legal counsel — which it declined to identify — to help it extricate itself from agreements with dealers who invested considerable time and money in the Genesis brand. The automaker also has hired a trio of outside consulting agencies to help it properly set up the new dealer plan, a spokesman said.

Customers balk
Raphael said the decision to fast-track Genesis’ separation came after feedback from Genesis dealers indicated that a smaller retail network was necessary to maximize profits.
He also cited data from customer clinics showing that buyers disliked the idea of shopping for a $50,000 or $60,000 luxury vehicle at a Hyundai showroom amid Elantras and Accents.
That posed a sensitive problem as Genesis prepares to launch its first new vehicle, the G70 sedan, which is expected to debut this year and be on sale in the U.S. in early 2018. Raphael said the timing of the new strategy wasn’t tied to the G70 launch.
Trimming the dealer network has long been a goal of Genesis execs. The problem, Raphael said, is that while most Genesis dealers agree on the need for fewer storefronts, no one wants to give up the franchise.
That much was clear to execs even at the dawn of Genesis, which raises the question of why the company required retailers to spend thousands of dollars on dealership improvements, new hires and training, service and parts upgrades and marketing, only to have to scale them back later.
The answer, says Andrew DiFeo, chairman of the Hyundai National Dealer Council, was haste in getting the luxury brand off the ground.
"The directive to launch the brand trumped that," said DiFeo, whose St. Augustine, Fla., Hyundai store carries Genesis vehicles. "At the time, this was maybe the easiest, least-painful route in the short term. But it affected the brand negatively in the long term."

Genesis augmented reality app replaces printed owners manual

Virtual overlays provide easy access to hundreds of how-to guides, maintenance instructions and other information.
Hyundai's Genesis division has introduced a new augmented reality app that serves as a replacement for traditional owners manuals.

Instead of flipping through a lengthy printed booklet, the app allows owners to hold their smartphone or tablet camera in front of the area of the car for which they need information. Visual references then overlay on the image and provide how-to guides, maintenance instructions and other information.
The interior section provides a button scanner and 360 virtual-reality environment, enabling users to quickly identify controls and learn how to use various functions.
Positioning a device over the engine bay links to AR maintenance instructions for each component system, showing how to check the oil or jump a dead battery.
RELATED CARS

With separate sections dedicated to the vehicle exterior and instrument cluster, the app provides access to a total of 135 videos and dozens of 3D overlay images. For the traditionalist, the app also includes a traditional owners manual with text and diagrams.
The app will initially roll out for the 2017 G80 and G90 and is available for Android and iOS devices.
