Looks to have newer plastics and seat? What exhaust does the bike have? hard to start when its cold, too much compression or something else?

How easy to kick start when hot? Does the tranny pop out of gear at all?

Yea, popping out of gear is a symptom of some different problems. Have you looked into the hard start problem?

I stand corrected.

It was running 110psi of compression, which I thought was good, but after some research it turned out it needs to be close to 200. The guy I bought it off of (not mentioning any usernames) said it had about 20 hours on the rebuild from the owner before him. He seemed like a trustworthy dude, I even gave him the money in advance and let the bike sit at his house for a week before I picked it up. Either he was misinformed or I was lied to, but the piston in it now isnt OE, so it has been rebuilt but and is possible that it was put together/broken-in improper or shitty parts were used.

So anyway, tonight I got it tore down. Inside the cylinder; total mayhem. Both rings are broken and the sleeve is destroyed on 360 degrees of the surface and eaten almost completely through in one spot. Head and piston top were also beat to death by something that got inside there.

Needless to say, this thing is no longer for sale until I get it rebuilt and broken in.

Pro-top: Never buy a bike that is "cold natured", thats just another term for "needs rebuilt"

Sorry to hear of the internal carnage. It might be worth your time to just part it out rather than mess with getting a new cylinder, head, piston kit, gaskets, etc

I made the same mistake years ago. Bought a lt250r with no spark and it turned out to be bad electronics plus a destroyed cylinder. Good luck

Im still on the fence about what to do. The head is a little beat up but not enough to worry me at all to run it, but I found earlier that the exhaust valves took some damage too. I know I can get a new sleeve & piston kit for about $250, the real killer is going to be paying for the machining and new valves. It will probably just get pushed to the back of the shop and Ill get the parts here in a few weeks after tax time.

Luckily my trusty KDX is still running like a champ.
